Abstract:The structure and catalytic properties of ultrafine Mo-based oxide particles prepared by the sol–gel technique are studied by using XRD, TEM, TPR, FT-Raman, BET surface area measurement, and microreactor tests. It is shown that for partial oxidation of toluene to benzaldehyde, the ultrafine Fe2(MoO4)3 and Ce2(MoO4)3 particles exhibit higher benzaldehyde selectivity and toluene conversion than the corresponding larger oxide particles prepared by the conventional coprecipitation method. The unique catalytic properties of ultrafine Fe2(MoO4)3 and Ce2(MoO4)3 particles may be correlated to the higher mobility of lattice oxygen ions in the oxides and their higher BET surface area. For the ultrafine Mo-based oxides prepared by the sol–gel process, the selectivity to benzaldehyde follows the order Ce2(MoO4)3>Fe2(MoO4)3>La2(MoO4)3>MoO3, which is in good agreement with the reducibility of Mo ions and reactivity of lattice oxygen ions in the ultrafine Mo-based oxides. These results reveal that the lattice oxygen ions in the Mo-based oxides are the main active species for partial oxidation of toluene to benzaldehyde. The results of in situ LRS studies indicate that the terminal Mo=O bonds in Ce2(MoO4)3 are the main reactive species for partial oxidation of toluene to benzaldehyde.

Abstract:Iron-modified HZSM-5 materials were prepared by the impregnation techniques at ambient temperature and characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and ICP-MS to determine the phase structure and loadings of iron dioxide. This material was tested for solvent-free catalytic oxidation of toluene under mild conditions. The result shows that Fe2O3/HZSM-5 is an effective catalyst, exhibiting 17.3% conversion of toluene, 51.4% selectivity to benzaldehyde at 90°C. Furthermore, the catalyst can be easily recovered and reused for three times without a significant loss in its activity and selectivity.

Abstract:In-situ Mössbauer spectroscopy, as well as x-ray diffraction and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy has been used to study the Fe−Mo oxide catalysts with the ratio of Fe/Mo=0.29 and 0.67. The results showed that Fe2(MoO4)3 in the catalysts was reduced to β-FeMoO4 during the oxidation of toluene, and the β-FeMoO4 was reoxidized to Fe2(MoO4)3 by the air. The catalyst with the ratio of Fe/Mo=0.29, which was easier to be reduced to β-FeMoO4, showed higher catalytic activity. The different effects of Fe and Mo in the catalysts are discussed.

Abstract:Structure and catalytic properties of La-Mo complex oxide ultrafine particles were studied by using TPR, FT-IR, UV-DRS and oxidation of toluene reaction test. It is shown that benzaldehyde selectivity for La-Mo complex particles is much higher than that of the MoO 3. The mobility of lattice oxygen (Mo=O) species of the ultrafine La-Mo catalyst is larger than that of the MoO 3 catalyst due to the strong interaction between La and Mo, this leads to the higher benzaldehyde selectivity of La-Mo catalyst.

Abstract:A series of Ce-Mo-P oxide catalysts with different Ce : Mo : P atomic ratio were prepared and applied to selective catalytic oxidation of toluene to benzaldehyde. The best catalytic activity result of 16. 1% benzaldehyde yield can be obtained with Ce : Mo : P=2 : 1 : 0. 2 sample when the measured temperature was 485°C, the air : toluene ratio was 10. The structures and properties of the surfaces of catalysts were characterized by XRD, IR, UV-DRS, XPS and other methods.

Abstract:A composite catalyst was prepared by impregnation of ZSM-5 in mixture solution of Co(NO3)2, ZrOCl2 and phosphotungstic acid (PW) and characterized by XRD, FT-IR, UV–vis, XPS, SEM and TEM techniques to confirm its structure and composition. The pre-prepared composite is composed of Co2(PO4)Cl, ZrO2, P2O5 and WO3 crystalline nanoparticles uniformly dispersed on ZSM-5 zeolite. The prepared composite demonstrates effective catalytic function for solvent-free oxidation of toluene into benzaldehyde with H2O2 oxidant, achieving 16.6% conversion and 90% selectivity. The effect of various components composed of the catalyst and reaction conditions on the catalytic function were explored. Moreover, the recovery and reusability of the catalyst were estimated, presenting good reusability.

Abstract:A series of Ce-Mo oxide catalysts with different Ce/Mo atomic ratio were prepared and applied to selective oxidation of toluene to benzaldehyde. The structures and properties of the surfaces of catalysts were characterized by XRD, TPR and DR-UVS. The natures of oxygen species on the surfaces of these samples were studied by using temperature programmed desorption-mass spectrography (TPD-MS). The results showed that the oxygen species of multiple adsorption existed on the sample surface. And in the range of desorption temperature < 900 degrees C, for the Ce-Mo samples, not only the desorption peaks of O- species on surfaces of samples be discoved, but also the O2- - species appeared. As the content of Ce in Ce-Mo oxides was changed, the activation energy of oxygen desorption (E-d) also changed. The E-d value of sample 3 (Ce/Mo = 1/1) is the lowest and its selectivity of benzaldehyde in toluene oxidation is the highest. Thus, a parallel relation between the Ed value and the selectivity for benzaldehyde existed in these Ce-Mo oxides.

Abstract:Benzaldehyde is much easier to be oxidized with respect to toluene, making the selective oxidation of toluene to benzaldehyde extremely challenging. Herein, a series of heteropoly acid catalysts with different ratios of molybdenum and vanadium supported on carbon paper (CP) were synthesized. The oxygen vacancy concentration and dispersion of heteropoly acid on CP can be changed by regulating the ratio of molybdenum and vanadium. Due to the suitable oxygen vacancy concentration and most uniform dispersion on CP, HPMoV2 has the highest electrocatalytic oxidation performance, showing the benzaldehyde selectivity of 83.5% at the toluene conversion of 83.4%. In-situ Raman spectroscopy proved that toluene was initially activated into benzyl cation and further oxidized by active oxygen species (O22-ads, O2-ads) to form benzaldehyde. The active oxygen species generated by electro-activation of molecular oxygen adsorbed on oxygen vacancies of heteropoly acid, mainly contribute to the selective oxidization of toluene into benzaldehyde. This work develops a new electrochemical strategy to achieve highly selective conversion of toluene into benzaldehyde with molecular oxygen under mild conditions.

Abstract:The two-component mixed oxides FeVOx with various molar ratio of Fe to V were prepared and their phase composition, structure and morphology were determined by XRD and SEM. This prepared material was employed for liquid-phase oxidation of octanol using H2O2 as oxidant. The mixed oxide FeVOx with 2.5:1 of Fe to V molar ratio was found to be an effective catalyst with high selectivity to octanal under solvent-free condition. The relationship between the catalytic performance and phase compositions of the mixed oxides was investigated by the test of its activity and XRD characterization. The catalytic action of the active sites including redox and acidic sites formed by interaction between VOx and FeOx on the surface of the catalyst was discussed. The catalyst was easily recovered and reused.

Abstract:Gas-phase selective oxidation of toluene with air is a promising method for producing high-purity benzaldehyde, but the yields of existing catalysts are limited, so the development of more efficient catalysts is of great importance to the chemical industry. Herein VMoNb/CeO 2 was prepared and characterized by SEM, XRD, Raman, XPS, H 2 -TPR, and NH 3 -TPD. The introduction of Mo generated V–O–Mo "asymmetric lattice oxygen" and thus brought high activity. Nb moderated the acidity and oxygen vacancy so as to improve the selectivity. The VMoNb/CeO 2 catalyst showed very high catalytic activity at 500 °C, with 35% toluene conversion and 82% benzaldehyde selectivity at an air flow rate of 30 mL/min for V:Mo:Nb =2:5:0.8. This work could serve as a reference for designing mixed metal oxide catalysts for selective oxidation of aromatic hydrocarbons.

Abstract:Two series of the Ce–Mo oxide catalysts for the partial oxidation of toluene to benzaldehyde have been prepared, respectively, by the sol–gel and coprecipitation methods and characterized by using various techniques. The results have shown that the catalytic reactivity is strongly composition related; and ultrafine Ce–Mo oxide particles prepared by the sol–gel process are apparently a better catalyst than large Ce–Mo oxide particles with a same composition but prepared by the coprecipitation method. The highest yield of benzaldehyde is obtained when the composition of the ultrafine particles reaches the vicinity of Ce/(Ce+Mo)=0.50, corresponding to a catalyst consists of both CeO2 and Ce2(MoO4)3. The reaction mechanism and the promotion effect of the excess CeO2 in the ultrafine Ce–Mo oxide are discussed to explain why ultrafine Ce–Mo oxide particles prepared by the sol–gel method are good for the partial oxidation of toluene.

Abstract:Iron and molybdenum modified phosphotungstates (FeMoPW) were synthesized by reaction of H3PW12O40 (PW) with Fe(NO3)(3).9 H2O and (NH4)(6)Mo7O24.4 H2O, followed by calcined, and characterized by XRD, FT-IR, UV-vis, SEM, TEM and XPS to determine the surface composition and structure. The as-prepared FeMoPW was utilized as a catalyst for solvent-free oxidation of styrene with hydrogen peroxide oxidant and it exhibited higher styrene conversion (60%) and high selectivity to benzaldehyde (90%). The FeMoPW catalyst converted styrene into benzaldehyde by synergic effect of FePW and Fe-2(MoO4)(3) active sites on the surface. The recovery and reusability of the catalyst were evaluated and excellent reusability was achieved. In addition, in situ adsorptions of styrene and H2O2 on the catalyst surface were conducted and the reaction mechanism via forming styrene oxide, and benzyl alcohol intermediates was proposed.
