Abstract:Bimetallic catalysts have exhibited huge catalytic potential in the oxy-functionalization of alkanes. Here, we provide a valid strategy for encapsulating copper and zinc metal oxide nanoparticles by mesoporous SiO2. The prepared CuZn@mSiO(2) catalyst are yolk-shell nanospheres with a diameter of 600 nm and a large specific surface area around 1000 m(2) g(-1). Bimetallic synergy between Cu and Zn was further analyzed by XRD, XPS and H-2-TPR. The selective oxidation of cumene to acetophenone was used as a probe reaction to evaluate the activity of bimetallic yolk-shell catalysts, and the results showed excellent catalytic performance that promoted cumene to acetophenone transformation under mild conditions (80 degrees C, 5 h, H2O2 as oxidant). Also, the recycling tests verified the robust stability and reusability for the catalyst. Finally, a reasonable reaction mechanism was proposed to better understand the oxidation pathway of cumene.
Enhanced Performance of Binary WO3/N-doped Carbon Composites for the Catalytic Oxidation of Benzyl Alcohol under Mild Conditions

Abstract:In this work, a series of N-doped carbon supported WO3 composite catalysts were successfully prepared via a hydrothermal and subsequent calcination method. The obtained WO3/N-doped carbon composites outperformed the bare WO3 and bare N-doped carbon for the selective oxidation of benzyl alcohol to benzaldehyde under mild and green reaction conditions (no base additives, water as solvent, and H2O2 as oxidant). It was found that the superior catalytic performance could be ascribed to the synergistic effect and strong interaction between WO3 and N-doped carbon among the composites. N-doped carbon impeded the aggregation of WO3 nanoparticles, and the graphitic and pyrrolic N species of N-doped carbon might provide main active sites for the immobilization of WO3 nanoparticles. Under the optimum reaction conditions, the yield of benzaldehyde was achieved as 94.6% within 4 h. The recycling test indicated that the catalyst could be reused for seven times without obvious activity loss. Besides, a possible reaction mechanism for this transformation was proposed. This work might give some insights into the design of heterogeneous composite catalysts for the selective oxidation of benzyl alcohol under mild conditions.

Abstract:Selective oxidation of toluene into high-value-added benzaldehyde is meaningful and challenging. In this study, the efficient conversion of this reaction on transition metal-based catalysts has been explored. An amorphous SiO2 support bimetallic Cu-V oxide was prepared (Cu-V/SiO2), showing excellent catalytic activity for the toluene oxidation with benzaldehyde selectivity of 87.3% and toluene conversion of 84.1% under mild reaction conditions, using peroxydisulfate (PDS) as oxidant. A strong synergistic interaction between Cu and V species had been revealed via a series of characterization analysis, which can boost the catalysis performance. This work may provide a green and cheap process for the selective oxidation of toluene to benzaldehyde.

Abstract:A composite catalyst was prepared by impregnation of ZSM-5 in mixture solution of Co(NO3)2, ZrOCl2 and phosphotungstic acid (PW) and characterized by XRD, FT-IR, UV–vis, XPS, SEM and TEM techniques to confirm its structure and composition. The pre-prepared composite is composed of Co2(PO4)Cl, ZrO2, P2O5 and WO3 crystalline nanoparticles uniformly dispersed on ZSM-5 zeolite. The prepared composite demonstrates effective catalytic function for solvent-free oxidation of toluene into benzaldehyde with H2O2 oxidant, achieving 16.6% conversion and 90% selectivity. The effect of various components composed of the catalyst and reaction conditions on the catalytic function were explored. Moreover, the recovery and reusability of the catalyst were estimated, presenting good reusability.

Abstract:The metal oxides CuMnCe and CeY washcoats on cordierite were prepared using an impregnation method, and then used as support for the active Pt component to prepare the Pt/CuMnCe and Pt/CeY monolithic catalysts for the deep oxidation of VOCs. In comparison with the Pt/CeY, CuMnCe, and CeY monolithic catalysts, the Pt/CuMnCe monolithic catalyst shows an excellent performance for toluene, ethyl acetate, and n-hexane oxidation and the T90% is low to 216, 200 and 260 degrees C, respectively. The active components Pt/PtO and CuMnCe result in a better synergetic interaction, which promote the catalyst reducibility, increase the oxygen mobility, and enhance the adsorption and activation of organic molecules. Abstract:As a precursor material, CoyCu3−y-MOF-74 has been synthesized by using a cost-effective and environmentally friendly mechanochemical method. It had a uniform nano-morphology and a controllable stoichiometric composition. By calcinating the CoyCu3−y-MOF-74 material, a bimetallic Co-Cu oxide catalytic material, with the formula M-CoyCu3−yOx, could, thereafter, be prepared. It was later on used for catalytic oxidation of toluene. The effect of calcination temperature and Co/Cu molar ratio on the redox properties, catalytic activity, and structural properties of the catalyst, were also systematically studied. The M-Co2Cu1Ox catalyst showed a complete toluene conversion of 1000 ppm toluene at 225 ℃ and with a under weight hour space velocity of 30,000 ml/ (g h). The corresponding conversion temperature for 50% and 90% of the original amount of M-Co2Cu1Ox (i.e., T50 and T90) were 202 and 220 ℃, respectively. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Raman spectroscopy, and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) results also showed a high density of oxygen vacancies in M-Co2Cu1Ox. Also, in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS) experiments indicated that benzaldehyde and benzoic acid were the main intermediates formed during the catalytic oxidation of toluene. In addition, the M-Co2Cu1Ox catalyst did also show an excellent durability and good water resistance by exposing it to a 5% water vapor for 24 h. Thus, the green and facile mechanical synthesis of the MOF-74 precursor has been proven to be very beneficial for the design and synthesis of a mixed metal oxide catalyst with a high toluene catalytic oxidation efficiency.

Abstract:A systematic study on the synthesis of the Cu x Mn 3.66−x Mo 3 O 12 using citrate sol–gel technique is presented. The influence of the copper substitution, citric acid concentration and pH of the precursor solution on the exclusive formation of Cu–Mn–Mo polymetallic oxide are studied. The physicochemical properties of as-prepared oxides are characterized by XRD, ICP-MS, SEM, TEM, XPS, FT-IR, BET, and H 2 -TPR, and their dependence on the conditions of synthesis is explored. It is found that these three synthesis factors remarkably alter the crystal phases and surface structures. The catalytic behaviors of synthesized catalysts for liquid-phase toluene oxidation are evaluated with toluene-catalyst mixture under uniformly distributed conditions. The evaluation reveals that the ratios of Mn 3+ /Mn 2+ as well as O ads /O lat on catalysts play a crucial role in the activity and selectivity. Factors effecting reaction parameters, such as reaction temperature, residence time, catalyst weight, promoter weight, airflow rate and the volume ratio of substrate to solvent, are investigated in detail. The reusability of the catalyst is examined through conducting repeat runs with the same catalyst, exhibiting no significant decline in its activity even after 8 runs. A toluene conversion of 60% with 57.4% selectivity toward benzaldehyde is observed after 4 h over the high-crystalline Cu x Mn 3.66−x Mo 3 O 12 nanoparticles.

Abstract:Bulk spinel Co3O4 oxide and supported Co3O4 catalysts (Co3O4/YSZ and Co3O4/TiO2) were synthesized by one-step hydrothermal method. Their physicochemical properties were characterized by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy, N2-sorption, powder X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, hydrogen-temperature programmed reduction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy.These characterization strategies were applied to corroborate and better understand the interaction between Co3O4 and the supports induced by the synergistic effect of support and the subsequent catalytic performance in toluene oxidation. The catalytic stability was evaluated by three consecutive runs and a long-term test. A highest toluene catalytic activity was achieved over Co3O4/YSZ supported catalyst comparing to that of the bulk Co3O4 and Co3O4/TiO2 catalysts, which could be attributed to its better low-temperature reducibility, oxygen activation and mobility induced by the intrinsic support properties. Thus, the positive interaction between spinel Co3O4 phase and YSZ support promoted the intrinsic catalytic properties for toluene oxidation, which was verify by testing a dual catalyst bed system consisting of bulk Co3O4 catalyst and YSZ support beds. These results were further confirmed by temperature-programmed oxygen isotopic exchange experiments, which indicated that the activation and diffusion of oxygen species on the YSZ oxygen vacancy sites were promoted by Co3O4, resulting in a significant increase of the reaction rate for toluene oxidation.

Abstract:The solvent-free oxidation of benzyl alcohol was studied using supported Pd-Ni bimetallic nanoparticles. Compared with monometallic Pd, the addition of Ni to Pd was found to be effective in suppressing the nondesired product toluene, thereby enhancing the selectivity towards benzaldehyde. This result was attributed to a dual effect of Ni addition: the weakening of dissociative adsorption of benzyl alcohol and the promotion of oxygen species involved in the oxidation pathway.
Synergistic oxidation of toluene through bimetal/cordierite monolithic catalysts with ozone

Abstract:Toluene treatment has received extensive attention, and ozone synergistic catalytic oxidation was thought to be a potential method to degrade VOCs (violate organic compounds) due to its low reaction temperature and high catalytic efficiency. A series of bimetal/Cord monolithic catalysts were prepared by impregnation with cordierite, including MnxCu5-x/Cord, MnxCo5-x/Cord and CuxCo5-x/Cord (x = 1, 2, 3, 4). Analysis of textural properties, structures and morphology characteristics on the prepared catalysts were conducted to evaluate their performance on toluene conversion. Effects of active component ratio, ozone addition and space velocity on the catalytic oxidation of toluene were investigated. Results showed that MnxCo5-x/Cord was the best among the three bimetal catalysts, and toluene conversion and mineralization rates reached 100 and 96% under the condition of Mn2Co3/Cord with 3.0 g/m3 O3 at the space velocity of 12,000 h-1. Ozone addition in the catalytic oxidation of toluene by MnxCo5-x/Cord could efficiently avoid the 40% reduction of the specific surface area of catalysts, because it could lower the optimal temperature from 300 to 100 °C. (Co/Mn)(Co/Mn)2O4 diffraction peaks in XRD spectra indicated all the four MnxCo1-x/Cord catalysts had a spinel structure, and diffraction peak intensity of spinel reached the largest at the ratio of Mn:Co = 2:3. Toluene conversion rate increased with rising ozone concentration because intermediate products generated by toluene degradation might react with excess ozone to generate free radicals like ·OH, which would improve the toluene mineralization rate of Mn2Co3/Cord catalyst. This study would provide a theoretical support for its industrial application.

Abstract:Using poly (ethylene oxide)-poly (propylene oxide)- poly (ethylene oxide) (P123), tetraethyl silicon (TEOS), HCl, n-butanol as raw materials, SBA-15 template was prepared by liquid phase reaction method. Using SBA-15 as template, Cu(NO 3 ) 2 ·3H 2 O and Co(NO 3 ) 2 ·6H 2 O as raw materials and n-hexane as solvent, mesoporous CuCo 2 O 4 composite metal oxide was prepared by hard template nano-casting. The composite metal oxides were characterized by thermo gravimetric differential scanning calorimetry (TG-DSC), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Taking benzyl alcohol as the target, the effects of reaction temperature, different catalyst dosage, reaction time and molar ratio of benzyl alcohol to hydrogen peroxide on selective oxidation of benzyl alcohol by CuCo 2 O 4 were studied, and the oxidation products were analyzed by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). The results show that the sample of CuCo 2 O 4 metal composite calcined at 700 °C has the highest purity, and the average particle size is about 500 nm. The optimum conditions for selective oxidation of benzyl alcohol by CuCo 2 O 4 are reaction system temperature of 80 °C, catalyst dosage of 8 g/L, reaction time 3h, the molar ratio 1:1 of hydrogen peroxide to benzyl alcohol. Under the optimum condition, the conversion rate of benzyl alcohol is 78.13% and the recovery rate of benzaldehyde is 56%. Mesoporous CuCo 2 O 4 is a composite metal oxide with good selective oxidation of benzyl alcohol, which has a wide application prospect.

Abstract:Cu-Mn, Cu-Mn-Ce, and Cu-Ce mixed-oxide catalysts were prepared by a citric acid sol-gel method and then characterized by XRD, BET, H2-TPR and XPS analyses. Their catalytic properties were investigated in the toluene combustion reaction. Results showed that the Cu-Mn-Ce ternary mixed-oxide catalyst with 1:2:4 mole ratios had the highest catalytic activity, and 99% toluene conversion was achieved at temperatures below 220°C. In the Cu-Mn-Ce catalyst, a portion of Cu and Mn species entered into the CeO2 fluorite lattice, which led to the formation of a ceria-based solid solution. Excess Cu and Mn oxides existed on the surface of the ceria-based solid solution. The coexistence of Cu-Mn mixed oxides and the ceria-based solid solution resulted in a better synergetic interaction than the Cu-Mn and Cu-Ce catalysts, which promoted catalyst reducibility, increased oxygen mobility, and enhanced the formation of abundant active oxygen species.

Abstract:Nitrogen oxides (NO x ) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) coexist in the flue gases from coal-fired power plants and iron/steel smelting industry. In this study, a dual-site catalyst, composed of Cu-Ce-Ti mixed oxide, was screened for the synergistic elimination of NO x and VOCs. The catalyst showed a synergistic removal efficiency above 95% for both C 7 H 8 and NO at 250┬Ā┬░C, and sustain the NO x and VOCs removal efficiencies above 90% even in the presence of 5┬Āvol%┬ĀH 2 O and 500┬Āppm SO 2 at 300┬Ā┬░C. Mechanistic studies revealed that the Cu and Ce sites play individual roles in toluene oxidation and NO x reduction, respectively. The primarily occurred SCR reaction facilitated electron exchange through the redox cycling between Ce 4+ /Ce 3+ and Cu 2+ /Cu + pairs, resulting in a high abundance of Cu 2+ sites being highly active in toluene oxidation. This study could provide new strategy for high-performance catalysts toward synergistic NO x and VOCs abatement.

Abstract:There emerges an urgent stipulation towards the enhanced toluene catalytic combustion nanocatalysts for whittling down the footprint of toluene, a notorious air pollutant. Unfortunately, Few materials which are currently made accessible both present the high catalytic performance lower than 250 °C and keep durable at elevated temperatures. Herein, we demonstrate an expeditious salt hydrolysis-driven redox-precipitation protocol wherein H+ donated by the hydrolysis of copper salt was used to initiate the regioselective reduction of KMnO4 by H2O2 under controlled redox kinetics in order to assemble the homogeneous mixed solid solution hollow microsphere Cu-Mn-based structure. Manifold characterization technologies unveil that in this unique nanbomicrosphere the abundant microscaled pores are successfully created across Cu-Mn bulks with fine-modulating the chemical properties. In sharp contrast with the compact counterparts without tailed porosity, the tuned crystallinity, accessed edge sites with the unsaturated coordination, fast redox chemistry, and boosted gaseous diffusion during reactions synergize to result in the signally good toluene oxidation, with the complete elimination activity at 252 °C, T90 at 237 °C, and prominent long-term durability under the stringent reaction atmospheres. Our current study ushers in an alternative and tractable arena to excogitate the porous oxide materials for multifarious catalysis implementations.

Abstract:Mn3O4-NiO-Ni/CNTs catalysts were synthesized via a facile spontaneous redox reaction at high temperature. Comparing with monocomponent Mn or Ni species loaded on CNTs, the bicomponent Mn and Ni species loaded on CNTs showed much better catalytic performance. It was found that the part of metallic Ni, which was formed by spontaneously on CNTs at high temperature, may help to improve the catalytic oxidation because it was favorable for the adsorption and activation of molecular oxygen. Comparison of different carbon supports and the influence of defect density of CNTs on the reaction had also been discussed. The proposed route of preparing efficient multi-component catalysts via spontaneous reduction of metal oxide promoted by high temperature provided a promising choice to the synthesis and application of carbon-based catalysts.
