Abstract:Using O2 as an oxidant, developing a non-noble metal catalyst for the selective catalytic C-H bond oxidation of pchlorotoluene is desirable and challenging. In this work, a series of Co, Cr co-doped OMS-2 (Octahedral Molecular Sieve-2) catalysts were prepared by a conventional refluxing method. It was found that the incorporation of Co and Cr improved the catalytic activity for the selective oxidation of p-chlorotoluene to p-chlorobenzaldehyde. Among these catalysts, CoCr/OMS-2 (Co: Cr = 1: 1, mass ratio), the best catalyst, shows that the conversion and the selectivity of p-chlorobenzaldehyde is 94.8 % and 94.3 %, respectively. The enhanced catalytic activity was due to the larger specific surface area and even dispersion of active components. The characterization results also disclosed that the co-doping of Co and Cr increased the oxygen vacancy and enhanced the ability to activate the surface lattice oxygen. Additionally, density functional theory calculations demonstrated that co-doping of Co and Cr promoted the adsorption of p-chlorotoluene and O2, and decreased the energy barrier of rate-determining step (the conversion of p-chlorobenzyl alcohol to p-chlorobenzaldehyde). Besides, when H2O was added to the reaction system as the second solvent, the activation and dissociation of O2, and the formation of p-chlorobenzaldehyde were facilitated, in agreement with the experimental results. This work demonstrated the promotional effect of Co, Cr co-doped into OMS-2 catalyst and the role of H2O for the selective oxidation of p-chlorotoluene.

Abstract:The morphology and size of Co-MOF-74 were effectively controlled by adjusting the water portion in DMF-H2O mixed solvent system, and six different Co-MOF-74 samples were successfully obtained. The water content can alter the deprotonation rate of the organic ligand and then change the nucleation rate of crystal, thus regulate morphology and size of Co-MOF-74. The discrepancy of morphology and size has significant effect on texture structure of Co-MOF-74 but without changing their composition. The formation mechanism of crystal growth was proposed by studying the change of reaction solution pH value. These samples exhibit morphology and size dependent catalytic activity in toluene oxidation. The flower-like sample has the best catalytic performance with 12.1% toluene conversion and 63.8% benzaldehyde selectivity. Additionally, the influence of reaction parameters on the catalytic oxidation reaction was also examined. Rearserch on the structure-property relationship of catalyst would be useful for rationally synthesizing novel MOF in heterogeneous catalysis.

Abstract:A series of core-shell samples with different shell thicknesses were prepared by the seed growth method, which were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, nitrogen adsorption-desorption and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The shell thickness of these MOF samples were successfully controlled by adjusting the mass ratio between MnCl2·4H2O and Co-MOF-74. On this basis, these MOFs were applied to the catalytic oxidation of toluene. The results showed that with the growth of Mn-MOF-74 in the outer layer of Co-MOF-74, the oxidative selectivity of the substrate to benzaldehyde was greatly improved for the synergy between the core layer and shell layer. The conversion of toluene was 22.4%, and the selectivity of benzaldehyde was 98.1%. In addition, the catalyst can transform various substituted toluene into the corresponding aldehydes in highly selectivity and still keeps good stability after four catalytic cycles. The selectivity of the corresponding aldehyde is generally above 80%.

Abstract:Cost-efficient and durable manganese-based catalysts are in great demand for the catalytic elimination of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which are dominated not only by the nanostructures but also by the oxygen vacancies and Mn-O bond in the catalysts. Herein, a series of nanostructured Co-Fe-doped-δ-MnO2 catalysts (Co-Fe-δ-MnO2) with high dispersion were in situ fabricated by employing metal-organic-frameworks (MOFs) as reducing agents, dopants, and templates all at the same time. The as-obtained Co-Fe-δ-MnO2-20% catalyst exhibited robust durability and high catalytic activity (225 °C) for toluene combustion even in the presence of 5 vol % water vapor, which is 50 °C lower than that of pristine δ-MnO2. Various characterizations revealed that the homogeneously dispersed codoping of Co and Fe ions into δ-MnO2 promotes the generation of oxygen vacancies and weakens the strength of the Mn-O bond, thus increasing the amount of adsorbed oxygen (Oads) and improving the mobility of lattice oxygen (Olatt). Meanwhile, due to successfully inheriting the framework structures of MOFs, the obtained catalyst exhibited a high surface area and three-dimensional mesoporous structure, which contributes to diffusion and increases the number of active sites. Moreover, in situ DRIFTS results confirmed that the toluene degradation mechanism on the Co-Fe-δ-MnO2-20% follows the MVK mechanism and revealed that more Oads and high-mobility Olatt induced by this novel method contribute to accumulating and mineralizing key intermediates (benzoate) and thus promote toluene oxidation. In conclusion, this work stimulates the opportunities to develop Co-Fe-δ-MnO2 as a class of nonprecious-metal-based catalysts for controlling VOC emissions.
Enhancing Low-Temperature Catalytic Performance for Toluene Oxidation Using In-Situ Pyrolyzed Mn-Doped MOF-74 Derived MCNOx Catalysts

Abstract:This paper focuses on the use of catalysts generated from metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) for the degradation of toluene in a linked non-thermal plasma/photocatalytic process. The porous tri-metal oxide catalyst (MCNOX) was derived from the metal organic framework (MOF-74) via an in-situ pyrolysis strategy utilizing Mn-doped CoNi-MOF-74 as the precursor. The resulting MCNOX material exhibits a unique series of surface defects, which significantly enhances its catalytic activity. We found that MCNOx materials, due to their high specific surface area, regular porous structure, and excellent reducibility, can synergize well with NTP in the complete decomposition of toluene, which makes the NTP coupled catalytic system have better catalytic activity and CO2 selectivity. The toluene conversion temperature of T90 in the NTP synergistic thermocatalytic system was 250 °C for the 5MCNOx catalyst, which was also much higher than that of 1MCNOX (256 °C), 10MCNOX (258 °C), CNOX (270 °C), and 5MCNOx catalyst in the monocatalytic system (270 °C). In addition, the catalytic stability of MOF-derived MCNOx oxides and the influence of water vapor on catalytic activity were investigated, confirming their excellent catalytic performance. Finally, the importance of Mn doping in improving toluene oxidation activity on MOF-74 derived CNOx has been demonstrated, providing a viable strategy for developing a toluene oxidation catalyst.

Abstract:MnCo spinel oxide catalysts were successfully synthesized by the calcination of bimetallic Mn/Co-MOFs as sacrificial templates. The derived catalysts exhibited optimal catalytic activity, reusability and thermal stability for toluene oxidation, which was ascribed to their large specific surface area, higher number of octahedral metal ions and the weakest metal-oxygen bonds.

Abstract:MnO2-decorated iron-manganese composite oxides were prepared via a novel method combining hydrolysis driving redox reaction and hydrothermal approach. The differences in physicochemical properties and microstructures were controlled by modulating the ratio of MnO2 to 5Mn1Fe (The molar ratio of Mn to Fe was 5:1). Characterization results displayed that the excellent efficiency of toluene removal over 3MnO2/5Mn1Fe catalyst was attributable to the special structure, strong low-temperature reducibility, high surface Mn3+/Mn4+ and Oads/Olatt molar ratios. The interaction between MnO2 and 5Mn1Fe played a predominant role in outstanding catalytic efficiency of the hetero-nanostructures. Among all as-prepared catalysts, the highest activity was achieved over the bayberry-like 3MnO2/5Mn1Fe catalyst with corresponding T90 of 233 °C, much lower than MnO2 for 313 °C and 5Mn1Fe for 280 °C. This successful strategy could not only be applied to VOCs catalytic oxidation but also provide a novel synthetic path for other catalysis systems.

Co-MOF Nanocatalysts of Tunable Shape and Size for Selective Aerobic Oxidation of Toluene

Abstract:A series of Co-MOF nanocrystals are prepared in a water/DMF/TX-100/ionic liquid quaternary W/O microemulsion system at room temperature. DMF is chosen as the additive to improve the dissolution of organic linkers in water droplets, which ensures Co-MOF crystal formation in the polar cores. The shape and size of these crystals are effectively controlled by tuning the ionic liquid cation alkyl chain length and the ratio of water to TX-100 and have obvious differences compared to those prepared by the traditional solvothermal method. Molecular dynamic simulations prove the mechanism of the crystal growth process in this microemulsion system. The toluene selective oxidation reaction is selected as the model reaction to study the catalytic performance of these materials. Among all these catalysts, the multilayer nanoplate Co-MOF shows the best catalytic activity and selectivity for toluene owing to the small crystal size and exposed special crystal surfaces of this material. Our synthesis strategy provides a facile way to develop MOF nanocatalysts with controllable shapes and sizes for catalytic oxidation reactions.

Abstract:The design of Co-Mn composite oxides catalysts derived from MOF is significant for catalytic combustion of toluene. Here, a series of M-CoaMnbO x , with enhanced catalytic properties compared with that of M-Co3O4, were successfully prepared through pyrolysis of Mn-doped Co-MOF. The as-synthesized M-Co1Mn1O x (Co:Mn = 1:1) exhibits an optimal catalytic activity with 90% toluene conversion reached at 227 °C, which benefits from the increase of Co3+, Oads and the synergistic effect between Mn and Co. According to the analysis of the in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy, toluene could be degraded easier on M-Co1Mn1O x with lower activation energy than M-Co3O4. The main intermediate products are benzaldehyde, benzoic acid, anhydride, and maleate species. Those findings reveal the value of Mn doping for improved activity of toluene oxidation on MOF derived Co3O4, which provide a feasible method for the construction of toluene-oxidation catalysts.

Abstract:Mn-based metal oxides have shown promising performance in catalytic oxidation of toluene since the mixed valences of Mn3+ and Mn4+ on the surface. Herein, a series of Co-Mn catalysts were synthesized by adjusting the redox precipitation pH to explore the effect of pH on Mn3+, Mn4+ and the surface adsorbed oxygen species when applied for toluene combustion. The Co-Mn-12 catalyst fabricated in pH = 12 displayed the excellent catalytic activity and stability for the toluene oxidation of which the T90 at 20 000 mL g-1 h-1 was of 208 °C. The toluene conversion could maintain at around 100% even with the introducing of 10 vol.% H2O at 230 °C. We found the appropriate pH promoted the generation of more Mn3+ and Co3+ ions, which were conducive to the formation of oxygen vacancy and resulted in more absorbed oxygen species generated on the catalysts surface. Moreover, in situ DRIFTS spectra displayed that the existing of Mn3+ and the oxygen vacancy stimulated the production of hydroperoxyl-like groups introduced by H2O, facilitated the activation of O–O bond and enhanced the oxygen supply in the oxidation process. Therefore, Co-Mn-12 demonstrated the best catalytic activity and water-resistance, illustrating it is an efficient potential industrial catalyst for removing toluene.

Abstract:In this paper, KMnO4 was used to pre-treat Co3Fe-layered double hydroxides (LDH) precursor to prepare MnO2 decorated Co3Fe1Ox catalyst. The toluene oxidation performance of the catalyst was investigated systematically. The optimized 0.1MnCF-LDO catalyst exhibited the best catalytic performance, and the temperatures of 50% and 90% toluene conversion (T50 and T90) were 218 and 243°C, respectively. The apparent activation energy (Ea) was 31.6 kJ/mol. The characterization results showed that the pre-redox reaction by KMnO4 could increase the specific surface area, Co3+ species amount and oxygen defect concentration of the catalyst, which are the main reason of the improved toluene catalytic activity. Besides, this method was also applied to enhance toluene oxidation of iron mesh based monolithic catalyst. The 0.1MnCF-LDO/Iron mesh (IM) catalyst showed a 90% toluene conversion at around 316°C which was much lower than that of without MnO2 addition (359°C). In addition, the water resistant of all the catalysts was studied as well, all the samples showed relatively good water resistance. The toluene conversion still remained to be over >80% even in the presence of 10 vol.% water vapor.

Bamboo-like MnO2⋅Co3O4: High-performance catalysts for the oxidative removal of toluene

Abstract:The manganese-cobalt mixed oxide nanorods were fabricated using a hydrothermal method with different metal precursors (KMnO4 and MnSO4·H2O for MnOx and Co(NO3)2⋅6H2O and CoCl2⋅6H2O for Co3O4). Bamboo-like MnO2⋅Co3O4 (B-MnO2⋅Co3O4 (S)) was derived from repeated hydrothermal treatments with Co3O4@MnO2 and MnSO4⋅H2O, whereas Co3O4@MnO2 nanorods were derived from hydrothermal treatment with Co3O4 nanorods and KMnO4. The study shows that manganese oxide was tetragonal, while the cobalt oxide was found to be cubic in the crystalline arrangement. Mn surface ions were present in multiple oxidation states (e.g., Mn4+ and Mn3+) and surface oxygen deficiencies. The content of adsorbed oxygen species and reducibility at low temperature declined in the sequence of B-MnO2⋅Co3O4 (S) > Co3O4@MnO2 > MnO2 > Co3O4, matching the changing trend in activity. Among all the samples, B-MnO2⋅Co3O4 (S) showed the preeminent catalytic performance for the oxidation of toluene (T10% = 187°C, T50% = 276°C, and T90% = 339°C). In addition, the B-MnO2⋅Co3O4 (S) sample also exhibited good H2O-, CO2-, and SO2-resistant performance. The good catalytic performance of B-MnO2⋅Co3O4 (S) is due to the high concentration of adsorbed oxygen species and good reducibility at low temperature. Toluene oxidation over B-MnO2⋅Co3O4 (S) proceeds through the adsorption of O2 and toluene to form O*, OH*, and H2C(C6H5)* species, which then react to produce benzyl alcohol, benzoic acid, and benzaldehyde, ultimately converting to CO2 and H2O. The findings suggest that B-MnO2⋅Co3O4 (S) has promising potential for use as an effective catalyst in practical applications.
Highly Stable MOFs-Derived Cu–Co Composite Metal Oxides for Catalytic Oxidation of Toluene

Abstract:CuCoO x was prepared by in situ pyrolysis of Cu 2+ partially substituted MOF-74 precursor with Co-MOF as a template for catalytic oxidation of toluene. T 90 (the temperature corresponding conversion of 90%) was only 212°C, at 1000 ppm toluene and weight hourly space velocity (WHSV) of 36 000 mL g –1 h –1 . In addition, the conversion was maintained above 97% for 74 h of continuous reaction at 260°C. Even if after 2400 ppm 1,2-dichloroethane (1,2-DCE) poisoning for 2 h, the toluene conversion was still up to 93%, demonstrating excellent stability and resistance to deactivation of catalyst. Furthermore, The high activity and stability of CuCoO x could be attributed to the large specific surface area as well as the high Co 2+ /Co 3+ , Cu 2+ /Cu + , and O latt /O ads molar ratios.

Abstract:The hollow structural MnCoO x catalysts were prepared by self-assemble method using metal−organic frameworks as sacrificial template. Compared with MnCoO x nanoparticles synthesized by co-precipitation method, the hollow MnCoO x nanocages showed higher performance toward toluene oxidation, which was attributed to the high surface area, more active sites and better redox ability. After the addition of Pt species, the catalytic performance of hollow Pt/MnCoO x -H nanocages were greatly boosted, which was superior to the contrast Pt/MnCoO x -N catalyst. It revealed that the synergistic effect between Pt and support mainly contributes to improved activity, as well as the enhanced surface-active oxygen and low-temperature redox ability. In addition, the superior thermal stability was also demonstrated under dry or moisture conditions. This further promotes a potential application in the mitigation of VOCs pollution.

Abstract:For the first time, a nanosheet-state CoMnx mixed oxide with multifarious active regions was synthesized by oxidation-etching assembly of metal organic framework (MOF) precursor and applied for catalytic combustion of toluene at low temperatures. The obtained optimum catalyst denoted as CoMn6 showed excellent performance, which achieved 90% conversion of 1,000 ppm toluene under a weight hourly space velocity (WHSV) of 60,000 mL/(g·h) at 219 °C. While, it also exhibited long-term stability with strong water resistance property. The characterizations of physicochemical properties indicated that the oxidation-etching assembly process built an abundant mesoporous structure in the CoMnx catalyst, which greatly increased the specific surface area (SSA). Especially, potassium permanganate as oxidant and manganese source led to uniform dispersion and assembling of cobalt atoms, which caused the generation of low-crystallinity CoMnx mixed oxide with abundant dislocations, vacancies, phase interfaces and amorphous structures, resulting in excellent low-temperature reducibility, outstanding lattice oxygen mobility and abundant active species such as Mn 3+ , Co 3+ and adsorbed oxygen species. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations demonstrated that gaseous oxygen with the longer bond length (1.406 Å) and stronger adsorption energy (−4.443 eV) could be adsorbed and activated well on the MnCo 2 O 4.5 (3 1 1) plane, which is beneficial for the toluene oxidation. In situ diffuse reflectance infrared spectroscopy (DRIFTS) technique was applied to track the intermediates of toluene combustion under different atmospheres, which further deduced the contributions of different active regions and oxidation mechanism over the CoMnx catalyst. The present facile strategy of oxidation-etching assembly of the MOF precursor for the creating of novel catalyst with high performance could be applied in a wide variety of materials besides VOC combustion catalysts.

Synergetic Catalysis of Manganese Porphyrin-Cobalt Acetate for Toluene Oxidation with Molecular Oxygen

Abstract:Toluene oxidation with molecular oxygen to benzaldehyde, benzyl alcohol and benzoic acid is a very important reaction in the contemporary chemical industry.The catalyst system of Co(AcO)2/Mn(AcO)2 is widely used in commercial scale toluene oxidation with air to benzoic acid.The drawback of this process is that the yield of benzaldehyde was lower than 2%. The aerobic oxidation of toluene catalyzed by metalloporphyrins achieved 20%—30% selectivity of benzaldehyde and benzyl alcohol, however, toluene conversion in the oxidation was lower than 8%.The catalysis of manganese porphyrin-Co(OAc)2 for toluene oxidation with molecule oxygen was investigated in the absence of solvents, and toluene conversion and the yield of oxidation products were found to be significantly higher than those by separate use of cobalt acetate or manganese porphyrin.The results showed that there existed co-catalysis between metalloporphyrin and Co(OAc)2 in the toluene oxidation with molecular oxygen, and reaction time, temperature, pressure and catalysts concentration affected the synergy between metalloporphyrin and Co(OAc)2.
Catalytic oxidation of toluene over Co-Cu bimetallic oxides derived from CoyCu3-y-MOF-74

Abstract:As a precursor material, CoyCu3−y-MOF-74 has been synthesized by using a cost-effective and environmentally friendly mechanochemical method. It had a uniform nano-morphology and a controllable stoichiometric composition. By calcinating the CoyCu3−y-MOF-74 material, a bimetallic Co-Cu oxide catalytic material, with the formula M-CoyCu3−yOx, could, thereafter, be prepared. It was later on used for catalytic oxidation of toluene. The effect of calcination temperature and Co/Cu molar ratio on the redox properties, catalytic activity, and structural properties of the catalyst, were also systematically studied. The M-Co2Cu1Ox catalyst showed a complete toluene conversion of 1000 ppm toluene at 225 ℃ and with a under weight hour space velocity of 30,000 ml/ (g h). The corresponding conversion temperature for 50% and 90% of the original amount of M-Co2Cu1Ox (i.e., T50 and T90) were 202 and 220 ℃, respectively. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Raman spectroscopy, and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) results also showed a high density of oxygen vacancies in M-Co2Cu1Ox. Also, in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS) experiments indicated that benzaldehyde and benzoic acid were the main intermediates formed during the catalytic oxidation of toluene. In addition, the M-Co2Cu1Ox catalyst did also show an excellent durability and good water resistance by exposing it to a 5% water vapor for 24 h. Thus, the green and facile mechanical synthesis of the MOF-74 precursor has been proven to be very beneficial for the design and synthesis of a mixed metal oxide catalyst with a high toluene catalytic oxidation efficiency.

Abstract:Surface absorbed oxygen (O ads ) and surface lattice oxygen (O latt ) specie are critical for accelerating oxidative removal of toluene over MnO 2 -based catalyst. Herein, an excellent CuMnO 2 catalyst has been successfully designed and fabricated. Doping Cu 2+ with strong Jahn-Taylor effect into the lattice of MnO 2 not only weakens the strength of Mn-O bonds but also induces the formation of oxygen defects, which enhances the reactivity of O latt and promotes the adsorption of gaseous oxygen molecules. As a result, CuMnO 2 reaches 50 % and 90 % of toluene conversion at 212 and 241 °C respectively, showing obviously better catalytic performance compared to CeMnO 2 , NiMnO 2 , CoMnO 2 and δ-MnO 2 . Moreover, CuMnO 2 exhibits outstanding stability, good cycling stability and excellent water resistance ability. The in situ DRIFTS demonstrate that ring opening of benzoate and the dehydrogenation of benzaldehyde are key processes that affect the deep oxidation of toluene.
