Abstract:Experimental study on thermo-atmosphere combustion of methanol by port injection of dimethyl ether ( DME) and direct injection of methanol was carried out on a single cylinder diesel engine. The results show that the combustion process comprises three stages: low temperature heat release of DME, high temperature heat release of DME and diffusion combustion of methanol. With the increase of engine load, the minimum proportion of DME to realize stable combustion decreases. Both the high temperature reaction of DME and combustion of methanol delay with the decrease of DME. Under stable combustion conditions, as DME increases, the combustion efficiency and the thermal efficiency decrease. Both the HC and NOx emissions increase with the increase of DME, while CO emissions rise at first and then fall. In conclusion, the thermal efficiency and emissions of the engine can be improved by minimizing DME supply. In such cases, the thermal efficiency , HC emissions can be kept at the same level with those of the diesel engine; NOx emissions can be reduced by 50%, but CO emissions are higher than those of diesel engine.
