Abstract:We report on the reactive electron beam evaporative growth of well-aligned ZnO nanocolumns on Si (001) wafers in the environment of NH3/H2 gas mixture by using polycrystalline ZnO ceramic target as source material. The growth was carried out at low temperatures (400–450°C) without employing any metal catalysts. Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) revealed that nanocolumns with uniform distributions in their diameters, lengths, and densities were grown vertically from the substrates and terminated by smooth hexagonal (0001) facets with no terrace-like steps emerged, which should render potential applications such as inherent resonance cavities in fabricating ultraviolet-laser arrays. X-ray diffraction measurements revealed that ZnO nanocolumns were highly c-axis oriented, which is well consistent with the FESEM observations. More importantly, photoluminescence investigations of the nanocolumns demonstrated the strong excitonic emission and extremely weak deep level emission, indicating the high crystalloid and optical quality of the nanocolumns.

Abstract:We have demonstrated the crystalline ZnO–Al2O3 core–shell nanowire structure by atomic layer deposition (ALD) at a temperature 100°C. The core–shell structure could have potential applications in the fabrication of ZnO field effect transistor. After dissolving the ZnO core, shape defined, rigid and robust crystalline Al2O3 shelled nanostructures have been fabricated. Nanowire ZnO nanostructures have been replicated by alumina shell. This is one of the most effective techniques for producing core–shell or shell/hollowed nanostructures of any desired objects. The Al2O3 shelled nanostructures could have potential applications as space confined nanoreactors, drug delivery, nanofluidic channels and optical transmitting.

Abstract:A variety of novel hierarchical ZnO structures, such as intergrowth crystals, nanorings encircled nanoprisms, microtowers etc., have been synthesized by evaporation of zinc powder at 420 similar to 450 degrees C. The growth mechanisms of these interesting ZnO crystals were discussed, respectively. The ZnO microstructures with various morphologies may have potential applications in catalyst carrier, chemical sensors and optoelectronic microdevices.

Abstract:ZnO nanotubes with a regular polyhedral shape, hollow core, and wall thickness as small as 4 nm, have been prepared in large-area substrate by vapor phase growth. The nanotubes can be classified into two groups consisting of either polycrystalline or straight single crystal. The formation of the ZnO nanotubes was found closely related to the hexagonal structure of the ZnO crystal and the peculiar growth conditions used.

Abstract:Tower-like ZnO structures have been prepared by a simple carbon thermal reduction method and the possible growth mechanism of such structures was discussed. Comparing with microrods and nanowires, the photoluminescence images and spectra of tower-like ZnO were examined to understand the origins of their visible emissions, which is vital to future ultraviolet display devices. The visible photoluminescence locations of ZnO structures were studied by the near-field scanning optical microscopy. The experimental data indicate that the structure defects, surface impurities or dust, and adsorbed oxygen molecules can induce the visible emission of various ZnO nanostructures.

Abstract:Without the use of a metal catalyst in the process, ZnO with nanostructures was successfully prepared on Si (100) substrate by simple chemical vapor-deposition method. In our work, Ar was used as the plasma forming gas, O2 was the reactive gas and metal zinc powder (99.99% purity) vaporized by cylinder hollow-cathode discharge (HCD) acted as the zinc source. The crystal structures of the as-synthesized ZnO nanostructures were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD); the ZnO sample growing on the wall of the crucible showed a ‘comb-like’ nanostructure, while the other one at the bottom of the crucible showed a ‘rod-like’ structure, which can be attributed to the difference of the oxygen content. The measurement on the photoluminescence (PL) performance of the ZnO nanostructures was carried out at room temperature. The results indicated that the ‘comb-shape’ ZnO nanomaterial possessed a remarkably strong ultraviolet emission peak centered at 388 nm, while ZnO nanorods, except better ultraviolet emission, also had relatively strong blue-green emission ranging from 470 to 600 nm due to the existence of oxygen vacancies. The growth mechanism of ZnO with nanostructures is also discussed in this paper.

Abstract:Freestanding high-oriented single crystal ZnO columns array were prepared at the temperature range of 920–980°C by a simple two-step evaporation oxidation method without template introduced. The effects of releasing mode of zinc vapor to formation of ZnO columns array were evidenced. X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), and photoluminescence (PL) were used to characterize the morphology, structure and optical property of the sample. A possible growth mechanism was proposed and the conversion from ZnO to ZnS was realized by a high-temperature sulfuration with columns array maintained.

Abstract:Two-dimensional ZnO nanowall networks were grown on ZnO-coated silicon by thermal evaporation at low temperature without catalysts or additives. All of the results from scanning electronic spectroscope, X-ray diffraction and Raman scattering confirmed that the ZnO nanowalls were vertically aligned and c-axis oriented. The room-temperature photoluminescence spectra showed a dominated UV peak at 378nm, and a much suppressed orange emission centered at ∼590nm. This demonstrates fairly good crystal quality and optical properties of the product. A possible three-step, zinc vapor-controlled process was proposed to explain the growth of well-aligned ZnO nanowall networks. The pre-coated ZnO template layer plays a key role during the synthesis process, which guides the growth direction of the synthesized products.

Abstract:Three kinds of tetrapod-like ZnO nanostructures have been synthesized simultaneously in different regions of the same preparation apparatus by rapid heating zinc powder, in which two kinds of novel tetrapod-like ZnO nanocrystals with hexagonal needled arms and pyramid tip arms were first reported. High-resolution SEM and TEM measurements show that the arms of the tetrapod-like ZnO nanocrystals with needle-shaped arms grow in a layer-by-layer mode in the direction of <0001>. Zn suboxide likely plays a crucial role in the nucleation of tetrapod-like ZnO nanostructures. Oxygen concentration is deemed as the critical experimental parameter for the formation of different morphologies of ZnO nanostructures.

Abstract:Zinc oxide nanostructure have been fabricated in the anodic alumina oxide template by sol-gel method. The results shows that zinc oxide colloid absorb on the inner wall of the template and crystallize there first to form zinc oxide nanotubes. As time goes on, more and more zinc oxide colloids enter the template channels and fill the pores entirely, resulting in the formation of zinc oxide nanowires. The PL spectrum shows good UFV emission.

Abstract:Cu2O grass-like and ZnO flower-like nanoarchitectures were fabricated directly on Cu powders and Zn powders using a novel thermal oxidation stress-induced (TOS) method based on catalyst assistance at a low temperature of 150°C under moderate humid atmosphere. Abstract:Unusual ZnO superstructures with nanosheets standing on the backbone of spindle-like rods were synthesized for the first time from a flakelike Zn5(OH)8Cl2·H2O precursor under mild solution conditions without using high temperature or any organic molecular templates. The formation of the ring-like nanosheets standing on the spindle is related to the special morphology of the precursor and its solubility, as well as the refluxing reaction conditions. The time dependent shape evolution process and the conductivity measurement of the local reaction solution suggested that the spindle-like ZnO particles were formed at first and then the ring-like nanosheets grew heterogeneously on the backbone of these spindles. The ring-like nanosheets standing on the spindle-like rods was somewhat analogous to nacreous calcium carbonate layers around the columns near the growth tip of a young in red abalone, which could have some implications related with the formation of complex biominerals that exist in nature.

Abstract:In this work, ZnO hierarchical architectures are successfully fabricated by concentration-controlled heterogeneous nucleation behavior through a one-pot solution method, free of organic structure-directing agents or pretreated substrates. A two-stage nucleation-growth process should account for the assembly process. First, the ZnO flowerlike plate aggregates formed with fast nucleation-growth kinetics. Then, these plate aggregates served as substrates to induce secondary heterogeneous nucleations under appropriate supersaturation degree. Ostwald-ripening assisted oriented attachment was believed to play a key role in the growth behavior. It provides an approach for the construction of hierarchical architectures with the advantage of precluding alien species. Raman scattering and room-temperature photoluminescence studies showed high consistency with respect to the crystallization improvement at elevated temperatures, which further showed that optical methods possess great potential in probing the microstructure of ZnO crystals.

Abstract:Aligned high-density ZnO nanorods were successfully synthesized on porous aluminum oxide (PAO) template. The growth process involves carbonthermal reduction of ZnO as a Zn vapor source and ZnO nucleation on the PAO template without metal catalysts. Field-emission scanning electron microscope images revealed that the nanorods have uniform length distributions and hexagon end planes, and the intense c-axis growth was also confirmed by X-ray diffraction. Strong ultraviolet emission at 380 nm and weak green band emission at 520 nm at room-temperature photoluminescence clearly indicated the high quality of the ZnO nanorods. A growth mechanism is proposed that the multipore surface of the PAO template plays a critical role in the nucleation of ZnO in the initial stage of growth, and nanorods grow from the nuclei due to intense ZnO c-axis orientation growth.

Abstract:We present Al2O3-ZnAl2O4-ZnO nanostructure, which could be a prominent candidate for optoelectronics, mechanical and sensing applications. While ZnO and ZnAl2O4 composites are mostly synthesized by sol-gel technique, we propose a solid-vapor growth mechanism. To produce Al2O3-ZnAl2O4-ZnO nanostructure, we conduct ZnO:C powder heating resulting in ZnO nanowires (NWs) growth on sapphire substrate and ZnAl2O4 spinel layer at the interface. The nanostructure was examined with Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) method. Focused Ion Beam (FIB) technique enabled us to prepare a lamella for Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) imaging. TEM examination revealed high crystallographic quality of both spinel and NW structure. Epitaxial relationships of Al2O3-ZnAl2O4 and ZnAl2O4-ZnO are given.

Abstract:We show the success of large-scale growth of ZnO hexagonal nanoprisms on silicon substrates by a two-staged mechanism. In the first stage, the catalyst nanoparticles assisted the nucleation via the vapour–liquid–solid (VLS) mechanism to form polyhedral nanoparticles. In the second stage, the nanoprism was grown up by anisotropic homoepitaxy, layer by layer, on the c-face of the polyhedral nanoparticle. The surface of the nanoprism consists of the ultraflat {0001} and planes. The nanoprism is 200–500 nm in width and controllably sized in length, of high crystalline quality and excellent optical quality. This nanoprism would be an interesting building block for highly efficient nanolasers.

Abstract:Large-scale arrayed ZnO crystals with a series of novel morphologies, including tower-like, flower-like, and tube-like samples, have been successfully fabricated by a simple aqueous solution route. The morphology and orientation of the obtained ZnO crystal arrays can be conveniently tailored by changing the reactants and experimental conditions. For example, the tower-like ZnO crystal arrays were obtained in a reaction solution system including zinc salt, ammonia, ammonium salt, and thiourea, and the orientation of these tower-like crystals could be controlled by the contents of these reactants. Flower-like ZnO arrays were obtained at lower temperatures, and tube-like ZnO arrays were obtained by ultrasonic pretreatment of the reaction system. The growth mechanism of the tower-like and tube-like ZnO crystals was investigated by FESEM. The results show that tower-like crystals grow layer by layer, while tube-like crystals grow from active nanowires. Ultrasonic pretreatment is proved to be effective in promoting the formation of active nuclei, which have important effects on the formation of the tube-like ZnO crystals. In addition, large-scale arrays of these ZnO crystals can be successfully synthesized onto various substrates such as amorphous glass, crystalline quartz, and PET. This implies this chemical method has a wide application in the fabrication of nano-/microscale devices.

Abstract:Extended and oriented nanostructures are desirable for many applications, but direct fabrication of complex nanostructures with controlled crystalline morphology, orientation and surface architectures remains a significant challenge. Here we report a low-temperature, environmentally benign, solution-based approach for the preparation of complex and oriented ZnO nanostructures, and the systematic modification of their crystal morphology. Using controlled seeded growth and citrate anions that selectively adsorb on ZnO basal planes as the structure-directing agent, we prepared large arrays of oriented ZnO nanorods with controlled aspect ratios, complex film morphologies made of oriented nanocolumns and nanoplates (remarkably similar to biomineral structures in red abalone shells) and complex bilayers showing in situ column-to-rod morphological transitions. The advantages of some of these ZnO structures for photocatalytic decompositions of volatile organic compounds were demonstrated. The novel ZnO nanostructures are expected to have great potential for sensing, catalysis, optical emission, piezoelectric transduction, and actuations.

Abstract:Crystalline ZnAl2O4 nanotubes and nanonets are produced by interfacial reaction growth at the exterior and interior surfaces of an anodized aluminum oxide (AAO) template via the reaction between Al2O3 and ZnO (see figure).
