Abstract:Unusual ZnO superstructures with nanosheets standing on the backbone of spindle-like rods were synthesized for the first time from a flakelike Zn5(OH)8Cl2·H2O precursor under mild solution conditions without using high temperature or any organic molecular templates. The formation of the ring-like nanosheets standing on the spindle is related to the special morphology of the precursor and its solubility, as well as the refluxing reaction conditions. The time dependent shape evolution process and the conductivity measurement of the local reaction solution suggested that the spindle-like ZnO particles were formed at first and then the ring-like nanosheets grew heterogeneously on the backbone of these spindles. The ring-like nanosheets standing on the spindle-like rods was somewhat analogous to nacreous calcium carbonate layers around the columns near the growth tip of a young in red abalone, which could have some implications related with the formation of complex biominerals that exist in nature.

Abstract:One-dimensional (1D) rod-like structure of znic oxide constructed by nanoparticles was synthesized by the thermal treatment of zinc oxalate sub-micron rods, which were obtained via alcohol thermal process. The samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM) and photoluminescence (PL) spectrum. SEM and TEM show that the morphology of zinc oxalate dihydrate precursor is rod-like, about 400nm in average diameter and 3μm in average length. The zinc oxide obtained by annealing zinc oxalate exhibits 1D rod-like structure constructed by ZnO nanoparticles in original direction of the precursor. The room-temperature photoluminescence spectrum of as-prepared ZnO shows UV emission around 398nm and a diverse visible emission peaks indicating that there are deep level defects in ZnO nanoparticles.

Abstract:A variety of novel hierarchical ZnO structures, such as intergrowth crystals, nanorings encircled nanoprisms, microtowers etc., have been synthesized by evaporation of zinc powder at 420 similar to 450 degrees C. The growth mechanisms of these interesting ZnO crystals were discussed, respectively. The ZnO microstructures with various morphologies may have potential applications in catalyst carrier, chemical sensors and optoelectronic microdevices.

Abstract:A simple method was used to prepare monodispersed ZnO nanoparticles, which can be used as seeds for the synthesis of [0001]-oriented ZnO nanorods by refluxing. Based on the observation of shape and size of ZnO nanocrystals at different refluxing times and surface and attachment energies for various crystallographic planes calculated from the BFDH and HP models, a possible growth mechanism for ZnO nanorods was put forward to explain the experimental observations. The synthesized ZnO nanocrystals show green emission, which are correlated with the degree of oxygen vacancies in the samples.

Abstract:We have demonstrated the crystalline ZnO–Al2O3 core–shell nanowire structure by atomic layer deposition (ALD) at a temperature 100°C. The core–shell structure could have potential applications in the fabrication of ZnO field effect transistor. After dissolving the ZnO core, shape defined, rigid and robust crystalline Al2O3 shelled nanostructures have been fabricated. Nanowire ZnO nanostructures have been replicated by alumina shell. This is one of the most effective techniques for producing core–shell or shell/hollowed nanostructures of any desired objects. The Al2O3 shelled nanostructures could have potential applications as space confined nanoreactors, drug delivery, nanofluidic channels and optical transmitting.

Abstract:ZnO:In nanowires with superlattice structure have been successfully synthesized by evaporating ZnO, In2O3, and Co2O3 mixed powders. There are two types of superlattice nanowires in the product, one with longitudinal superlattice structure and another with transverse superlattice structure. Structures and components of the superlattice nanowires were investigated. It is found that they consist of In-O and In-doped Zn-O layers (In/Zn-O layers) stacked alternately perpendicular to the c axis and they have approximate ln(2)O(3)(ZnO)(m) composition. In addition, zigzag-modulated structure was also observed and considered as the ordered arrangement of In atoms within In/Zn-O layers. A growth model based on the vapor-liquid-solid mechanism is proposed for interpreting the growth of nanowires in our work. Due to the heavy doping of In, the emission peak in photoluminescence spectra has red-shifted as well as broadened seriously.

Abstract:As-synthesized ZnO nanostructures with a bladed bundle-like architecture have been fabricated from a flower-like precursor ZnO (.) 0.33ZnBr(2) (.) 1.74H(2)O via a mechanism of dissolution - recrystallization. Experimental conditions, such as initial reactants and reaction time, are examined. The results show that no bladed bundle-like ZnO hierarchical nanostructures can be obtained by using the same molar amount of other zinc salts, such as ZnBr2, instead of the flower-like ZnO (.) 0.33ZnBr(2) (.) 1.74H(2)O precursor, and keeping other conditions unchanged. The products were characterized by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The ZnO nanostructures are mainly composed of nanowires with a diameter around 40 - 50 nm and length up to 1.5 - 2.5 mu m. Meanwhile, ZnO nanoflakes with a thickness of about 4 - 5 nm attached to the surface of ZnO nanowires with a preferred radially aligned orientation. Furthermore, the photoluminescence (PL) measurements exhibited the unique white-light-emitting characteristic of hierarchical ZnO nanostructures. The emission spectra cover the whole visible region from 380 to 700 nm.

Abstract:Extended and oriented nanostructures are desirable for many applications, but direct fabrication of complex nanostructures with controlled crystalline morphology, orientation and surface architectures remains a significant challenge. Here we report a low-temperature, environmentally benign, solution-based approach for the preparation of complex and oriented ZnO nanostructures, and the systematic modification of their crystal morphology. Using controlled seeded growth and citrate anions that selectively adsorb on ZnO basal planes as the structure-directing agent, we prepared large arrays of oriented ZnO nanorods with controlled aspect ratios, complex film morphologies made of oriented nanocolumns and nanoplates (remarkably similar to biomineral structures in red abalone shells) and complex bilayers showing in situ column-to-rod morphological transitions. The advantages of some of these ZnO structures for photocatalytic decompositions of volatile organic compounds were demonstrated. The novel ZnO nanostructures are expected to have great potential for sensing, catalysis, optical emission, piezoelectric transduction, and actuations.

Abstract:Self-assembled zinc oxide (ZnO) nanostructures consisting of nanorods were synthesized at low temperature by means of a one-step hydrothermal method using a mixture of hexamethylenetetramine, zinc nitrate [Zn(NO3)2·6H2O], and sodium hydroxide (NaOH). Freestanding single-crystalline ZnO nanorods with polar surfaces on the sharp ends are congregated by the long-range electrostatic force resulting in the formation of ordered nanorod-based structures. The weak Van der Waals interaction causes random aggregation of some tiny nanostructures on the surfaces of the ordered nanostructures. As a result, sphere-like superstructures revealed by X-ray powder diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy are formed due to energy minimization. In addition, some interesting Raman and photoluminescence properties of the composite ZnO nanorod structures are also discussed in detail. Our results are beneficial to a better understanding of the formation mechanism of some ZnO superstructures.

Abstract:Three-dimensional (3D) six-fold symmetry ZnO sub-microstructures were prepared by using a low temperature (80°C) solution method. The 3D structure has unique configuration, i.e., a support core with six symmetric branches located on its middle. It was found that the structure can only be produced in a critical basicity condition, i.e., pH=11.8±0.2. The formation mechanism of the 3D structure involves the enhancing effect on the growth of ZnO [0001] direction and the secondary nucleation process. The 3D sub-microstructure is likely to be candidate as building block for nano-electromechanical system (NEMS) and nanomachines, i.e., act as a gear.
Facile Solution Synthesis and Characterization of Zno Mesocrystals and Ultralong Nanowires from Layered Basic Zinc Salt Precursor

Abstract:Novel hierarchical ZnO mesocrystals and ultralong ZnO nanowires have been prepared from a precursor of synthetic layered basic zinc acetate nanobelts by a facile solution route in the presence of poly(vinyl pyrrolidone) (PVP). X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) were used to characterize the products. Refluxing an aqueous dispersion of the nanobelts precursor in the presence of PVP at 100 degrees C for 6 h leads to the formation of well-defined hierarchical ZnO bundled mesocrystals. With an increase in the basicity of the reaction solution, ultralong ZnO nanowires were prepared. On the basis of the experimental results, a mechanism involving the self-organization of smaller inorganic building blocks during the crystallization of ZnO crystals was proposed. It has been demonstrated that PVP plays a key role in the formation of such novel hierarchical mesocrystals. Photoluminescence results show that the as-synthesized ZnO bundled mesocrystals have a broad yellow emission at above 568 nm excited by UV light, and this yellow emission band is attributed to a singly charged oxygen vacancy or other defects. Our work may shed some light on the design of other well-defined complex superstructures, and the as-grown architectures may have potential applications.

Abstract:Tube brush-like ZnO nanostructures were synthesized by a simple chemical vapor deposition method with Zn and ZnO as precursors. These special ZnO nanostructures were characterized by Scanning Electron Microscope, Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy, High Resolution Transmission Electron Microscope and Cathodoluminescence (CL) techniques. Empty backbones or comb ribbons backbones were found inside the tube brush-like ZnO structures and fuzzy ZnO nanowires outside. Outside ZnO nanowires grow along the c axis and show green CL emission. The growth mechanism of the hierarchical ZnO nanostructures was investigated by a series of experiments at different growth temperatures and different duration times, and a secondary growth mechanism has been proposed and discussed.
Microspheric Organization of Multilayered ZnO Nanosheets with Hierarchically Porous Structures

Abstract:Novel superstructures of multilayered ZnO nanosheets with hierarchically porous structures are successfully synthesized from a hydrothermal preparation and thermal decomposition of a layered precursor of zinc hydroxide carbonate (denoted as ZnHC). Nanosheet-based ZnHC microspheres are self-assembled by the hydrothermal process by using zinc nitrate hexahydrate and urea as the starting materials. The corresponding microspheric organizations of multilayered ZnO nanosheets with hierarchically porous structures are obtained by the thermal decomposition ZnHC precursor at 573 K. SEM images show that the average diameter of ZnO assembled microspheres is about 15 μm, and the length of a ZnO nanosheet building block which is made up of thin mutilayered sheets is around ∼7 μm. Studies also show well-crystallized pores with hierarchically distributed pore sizes are embedded in the multilayered ZnO nanosheets building blocks. A plausible dissociation-deposition mechanism using in situ formed Zn(OH)2 nuclei as the "sacrificial" templates for the microsphere assembly is also proposed.

Abstract:Rectangular thick plates of layered hydroxide zinc acetate (LHZA) are synthesized by crystal growth in ethanolic-aqueous zinc acetate solution. The secondary nucleation and crystal growth of LHZA with two phases results in rectangular thick plates, which have clear facets with terraces. The control of Zn concentration and water/ethanol ratio would create the stable LHZA system because of the suppression of the dehydration and condensation reactions from the zinc hydroxide to the zinc oxide. Moreover, the LHZA is converted into a framework-like ZnO by a pyrolysis reaction. The unique morphology of LHZA and ZnO is reported. (C) 2012 The Ceramic Society of Japan. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Three kinds of tetrapod-like ZnO nanostructures have been synthesized simultaneously in different regions of the same preparation apparatus by rapid heating zinc powder, in which two kinds of novel tetrapod-like ZnO nanocrystals with hexagonal needled arms and pyramid tip arms were first reported. High-resolution SEM and TEM measurements show that the arms of the tetrapod-like ZnO nanocrystals with needle-shaped arms grow in a layer-by-layer mode in the direction of <0001>. Zn suboxide likely plays a crucial role in the nucleation of tetrapod-like ZnO nanostructures. Oxygen concentration is deemed as the critical experimental parameter for the formation of different morphologies of ZnO nanostructures.

Abstract:Novel hierarchical ZnO nanostructures, porous ZnO nanobelts, and nanoparticle chains are prepared from a precursor of synthetic bilayered basic zinc acetate (BLBZA) nanobelts. BLBZA nanobelts are obtained by a simple synthetic route under mild conditions. X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, infrared spectroscopy, and thermal analysis are used to characterize the BLBZA nanobelts and ZnO nanostructures. The obtained BLBZA precursor consists of a lamellar structure with two interlayer distances of 1.33 and 2.03 nm, exhibits a beltlike morphology, and has widths of 200 to 600 nm, thicknesses of 10 to 50 nm, and lengths of up to 50 mu m. Refluxing an aqueous dispersion of BLBZA nanobelts at 120 degrees C for 12 h leads to the formation of well-defined hierarchical ZnO nanostructures. The time-dependent shape-evolution process suggests that spindlelike ZnO particles form first, and then the ringlike nanosheets grow heterogeneously on the backbone of these spindles. In addition, calcination in air can remove ligand molecules and intercalated water molecules from BLBZA nanobelts, resulting in the formation of porous ZnO nanobelts and nanoparticle chains. The BLBZA nanobelts serve as templates during the transformation to form ZnO beltlike nanoparticle chains without morphological deformation. Photoluminescence results show that both the as-synthesized hierarchical ZnO nanostructures and porous ZnO nanobelts show a narrow and sharp UV emission at 390 nm and a broad blue-green emission at above 466 nm when excited by UV light.

Abstract:Zn(II) infinite coordination polymer (ICP) octahedrons have been prepared via a facile solvothermal method employing a mixed-ligand tuned route. After calcinations of the Zn(II) ICP octahedrons at 550 degrees C, ZnO octahedral superstructures constructed by ZnO nanoparticles with a mean diameter of 50 nm were obtained. Influential factors such as reaction temperature, reaction time, and reagent dosage on the Zn(II) ICP particles have been systematically investigated. It was found that the reaction time had a significant effect on the morphology of the final product. The formation mechanism for the Zn(II) ICP octahedrons was proposed. The octahedron-shaped ZnO superstructures exhibit strong visible emission centered at 575 nm. Relatively strong visible emission was realized in ZnO with large particle size. The possible mechanism for the strong visible emission was also discussed.

Abstract:In this study, we report a simple solution-phase method to prepare ZnO nanostructures with controllable morphologies. By using oleylamine (OAm) and dodecanol (DDL) as solvents, zinc oxide nanocrystals with tunable sizes and diverse shapes (hexagonal pyramids, bulletlike, and pencil-like shapes) have been obtained under mild conditions. At the same time, the introduction of presynthesized gold nanocrystals can also lead to the hybrid nanostructures of goldzinc oxide hexagonal nanopyramids. In addition, the possible formation mechanism of the as-prepared ZnO nanostructures has been investigated. Notably, the unique optical properties of the ZnO nanostructures with different sizes and shapes have also been discussed. We hope that this strategy will be a general and effective method for fabricating other metal oxide nanocrystals.
