Abstract:The paper experimentally investigated the effects of grain refining on the rheological response of semi-solid Al - Si alloys through chemical refining. Selected refiners included Al - 5Ti - B, K2TiF6 , K2TiF6 plus graphite and K2TiF6 plus Ti. The apparent viscosity of semi-solid Al - Si alloys was measured using Cou-ette viscometer during solidification. Samples at different solid fractions were quenched to observe the micro-structure. It was found that grain refining drastically lowered the apparent viscosity of Al - Si alloys. The effect of Al -5Ti - B was better than that of K2TiF6 The effect of K2TiF6plus graphite or Ti was better than that of K2TiF6.

Abstract:The effects of mixed alkaline earth oxides on crystallization and structural changes in a multi-component borosilicate glass system are studied by using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscope (TEM). It is found that the crystallization is decreased with increasing alkaline earth oxide content and there are also a series changes occurred in TEM images. This paper introduces the conception that alkaline earth ions tend to occupy their preferred sites regardless of glass systems. This conception is assisted to explain the TEM images to some extent by suggesting a simple structural model about non-bridging oxygen in glass network. The conception also indicates a ‘blocking effect’ existing in such a multi-component borosilicate glass system, which may be responsible for XRD results in chief. In addition, the structural model suggested by TEM results refers a new unit of Si–O–M2+–O–B, which helps in understanding the minimum exhibits in XRD results. Moreover, a dielectric test is taken to study glass properties in detail.

Abstract:In this study, the structural and electronic properties of aluminoborosilicate glass, which has a wide range of applications in fields such as microelectronics and displays, were examined using ab initio molecular dynamic simulations. Computing models containing 220 atoms correctly described the local structure of the glass. The reliability of the computing models was verified by the consistency between the experimental results, obtained using high-energy X-ray diffraction and solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance, and the simulation results pertaining to structural factors, pair distribution functions, Q(n) distribution, and elastic properties. The presence of B and Al increased the flexibility and asymmetry of the system, as shown by the bond angle and ring size distributions. Based on the electronic properties, we observed that the introduction of Al and B atoms into the network could also cause covalent interactions with the O atoms, similar to that with Si atoms. However, the Na and Mg atoms still interacted with all kinds of atoms in the network via charge transfer and exhibited highly non-localized effects on the charge of the network formers. These results extend our understanding of the structure of aluminoborosilicate glass and have guiding significance for improving and designing new types of this glass.

Abstract:Various fluorine-containing Y-SiAlON glass-ceramics from a mixture of Y2O3, α-Si3N4, SiO2, and Al2O3 using AlF3 as the fluorine source were prepared by one-step or two-step carbothermal reduction process. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) were used to study the crystallization behavior of the glass-ceramics. The compositions of the crystals and the glass phase were semi-quantitatively determined by EDX. The final glass-ceramics contained N-containing melilite (Y2Si3O3N4) and β-Si3N4 together with a secondary phase of yttrium aluminum garnet (YAG, Y3Al5O12). The investigated Y-SiAlON glass-ceramics with higher F content showed better sintering properties. Fluorine has important effects on crystallization of glass-ceramics as it affects the crystallization mechanism by reducing the thermal energy barrier for crystallization. By controlling the reaction, the Y-SiAlON glass-ceramics are first held at 1300°C for 4h, which contrasts with the samples obtained after direct sintering at 1550°C, the conversion to Y2Si3O3N4 and β-Si3N4 is promoted and the final microstructure consists of elongated β-Si3N4 grains. These glass-ceramics showed relatively better mechanical properties.

Abstract:Glasses with composition of 30Bi2O3-15B2O3-40SiO2-15ZnO doped with CeO2, TiO2 or Sb2O3 were synthesized by melt-quench and were characterized in structure and properties. The results show that dopants allows conversion of [BO3] to [BO4] and facilitates the formation of [BiO3]/[BiO6] units and that glass physical properties are jointly influenced by the dopants-induced network alteration, bond strength and atomic compactness. Thermodynamic calculation combined with reaction kinetics analysis indicate that the varied oxygen bonding affinity of metal oxides as well as their susceptibility to melting temperature significantly affect the valence state of yielded metallic ions species that contribute to energy level transitions of electrons strongly associated with transmittance of the glasses. Oxides with lower oxygen bonding affinity may facilitate the oxidation of those with relatively higher oxygen bonding affinity. Thermodynamic and reaction kinetics methods can thus be used as the semiquantitative tools for optimizing glass synthesis process with tailored optical properties.

Abstract:The microstructures and properties of the sol-gel derived bioactive galsses were investigated using x-ray diffraction, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) in the system CaO-P2O5-SiO2. The bioactivity and biodegradability of the sol-gel glass were analyzed using in vitro metho. It was found by SEM that the sol-gel were composed of countless strings of nano-sized 'beads' which twined and connected one another to form a structure with fractal geometry morphology. The results show that the sol-gel glasses catalyzed with HCL solution had a relatively large surface area and small average micro-pore diameter.

Abstract:In the alkali-boron-silicon fluxing agents,stabilizers were added and a research was made about the performances of leadless and cadmiumless fluxing agents for overglaze colors.Through a series of contrastive experiments such as the chemical stability test,stack firing,viscosity test,screen printing and decoration firing,a test was conducted on optimum addition quantities of ZrO2,ZnO,SnO2 and TiO2.The result shows that on the basis of basic fluxing agent formula the optimum addition quantity of ZrO2 is 6%,SnO2 not more than 5%,ZnO 10%,TiO2 1%(the minimum level).8# is the best formula.

Abstract:The effects of the introduction of silica glass and silica ceramic into Ca-Al-B-Si-O glass/ Al2O3 composites on decreasing the shrinkage and the dielectric constant of samples were investigated by FTIR, DSC, XRD and SEM. The results show that silica ceramic filler can better improve the formation of Si-O-Si network in the composites under high temperature, which leads to increased continuity of glass network at high temperature, and deduces the increase of viscosity of composites and further results in the decrease in the shrinkage of samples. Densification, three-point strength, and dielectric constant of samples decrease with the increase of silica glass or silica ceramic content. By contrast, Ca-Al-B-Si-O glass/Al2O3 composites with 4 wt% silica ceramic exhibit better properties of a bulk density of 2.81 g·cm−3, a porosity of 0.3%, a 3dp value of 202 MPa, a ɛ r value of 7.41, a tan δ value of 8.3×10−4 at 10 MHz and a well matching with Ag electrodes. This material is suitable to be used as the LTCC material for the application in wireless communications.

Abstract:The effect of alumina (Al2O3) on the chemical durability ofborosilicate glasses,70SiO2-(20-x)B2O3-xAl2O3-10Na2O,x=0,5,10,15 and 20 (molar fraction),in water,HCl and NaOH aqueous solutions,was investigated via liquid resistance tests.The chemical stability of aluminoborosilicate glass was discussed based on the glass structure,and the mechanism of chemical attack in different solutions was proposed.The results show that a significant enhancement in the chemical durability in water,HCl and NaOH aqueous solutions occurs after the incorporation of Al3+ into the oxide glass network.The structural analysis indicates that the relatively low chemical durability of the glass as x=0 is correlated to the presence of BO4 with three and four non-bridging oxygen(NBO) in the melts.Consequently,the glass is eroded more quickly during the attack of the aqueous solutions,resulting in a porous glass surface.The chemical durability can be improved due to the addition of Al2O3 into the glass network,suppressing the formation of BO4.

Investigation on the Coloration Mechanism and Mineralization in Vitro of Bioglass

Abstract:In process of bioglass,the colors of the glass sometimes would be changed due to the change in melting technological conditions or the purity of raw materials,such as:light red,light blue,colorless.To explore coloration mechanism and control the melting technological conditions of bioglass,ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometer was employed to obtain the VIS spectra of the colorized bioglass samples,and XRF technique was used to analyze the trace elements in the glass composition.The analysis results indicated that the colorization elements in glass included Ni,Fe and S.The coloration mechanism of bioglass was discussed based on the above test results.Mineralization properties,which indicated the different bioactivity level of the bioglass with different colors,were characterized and compared by the in vitro test combined with FTIR technique.The results indicated that the mineralization rates in SBF of the bioglass colorated with light red and achromaticity were a little high than that of the sample colorated with light blue.The study could be applied in technological control for standard process of bioglass.

Abstract:Impurities in industrial silicon strongly affect the performance and appliance of silicon products, so raw industrial silicon must be refined to reduce impurity content and improve its quality. In this work, the slag agent CaO-SiO2-CaCl2 and the mixed Ar-H2O-O2 gas were used to refine the industrial silicon in a high-temperature gas blowing furnace. The effects of the slagging refining conditions on impurity removal were studied. The chemical composition of slag agent, mass ratio of slag to silicon, refining time and refining temperature were experimentally explored and the optimal efficiency of boron removal was found to be 96.77%. The boron content in refined industrial silicon decreased from 22 ppmw to 0.6 ppmw. The significant decrease of boron content in silicon indicates that the united gas-slag refining is an effective method to remove impurities from industrial silicon.

Abstract:Aluminosilicate glasses are extensively used in flat panel displays and aircraft windshields because of their superior mechanical characteristics. Understanding the influence of the components on the glass network structure and mechanical properties is essential to designing aluminosilicate glasses with desirable mechanical functions. In this paper, the molecular dynamic simulations were used to obtain atomic structural information of the glasses, and the results were compared with Raman, Nuclear magnetic resonance, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Differential thermal analysis, and Vickers hardness to elucidate the effect of Li 2 O/Na 2 O on the atomic structure and mechanical properties of aluminosilicate glasses. We show through experiments and molecular dynamic simulations that an increase in the Li 2 O/Na 2 O ratio can increase the mechanical properties of the glass. Li ions reorganized the glass network by partial conversion of [AlO 5 ] to [AlO 4 ] units and changes in the bridging oxygen/non-bridging oxygen ratio, which in turn alters the glass on a longer scale, for example, by sharpening the ring distribution and an increase in the number of loops, leading to structural clustering of the glass network and increased mechanical properties. This composition-structure-property relationship can be used to design aluminosilicate glasses with particular properties.

Abstract:Solar grade silicon (SoG-Si) is the core material of solar cells. The removal of boron (B) has always been a challenge in the preparation of high purity Si. Slag refining has always been considered as one of the effective methods to remove B, but the design of refined slag has been limited by the cognition of the relationship between slag structure and impurity removal, and can only rely on the apparent basicity and oxygen potential adjustment of slag based on a large number of conditional experiments. In order to clarify the B removal mechanism of slag refining from Si, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and Raman vibrational spectroscopy were used to investigate in detail the behavior and state of B and aluminum (Al) in the SiO2–CaO–Al2O3–B2O3 slag. The role of the degree of B–Si cross linking on the B activity in slag was highlighted by comparing the partition ratio (LB) between slag and Si. Q2 structural unit of slag is an important site for capturing B. BO4 (1B, 3Si) species is the main form of connection between B and silicate networks, which determines the activity of B in the slag. The addition of Al2O3 into SiO2–CaO slag can change the relative fraction of Q2 and BO4 (1B, 3Si). Increasing Al2O3 content from 0 to about 20 wt% can lead to the overall increase of Q2 population, and a tendency to decrease first and then increase of BO4 (1B, 3Si) fraction under both basicity conditions (0.6 and 1.1). When Al2O3 content is less than 10 ± 1 wt%, the decrease of BO4 (1B, 3Si) population plays a major role in deteriorating the connectivity between B and aluminosilicate network, which leads to a higher activity of B. When the Al2O3 content is greater than 10 ± 1 wt%, B is incorporated into the silicate network more easily due to the formation of more Q2 and BO4 (1B, 3Si), which contributes to a rapid decline in activity of B in slag.

Abstract:<p>The mid-spatial frequency error and high-spatial frequency error on the optical glass component surface limit the development of high-power laser devices. By heat-treatment in wet atmosphere, the surface can be smoothed spontaneously under the action of capillary force, which is positive to improve the quality of optical components. In this paper, the finite element simulation model of the glass surface smoothing process is established based on the level-set method. The factors affecting the smoothing process, such as morphology wavelength and viscosity, are analyzed by simulation. A series of surface smoothing heat-treatment experiments for borosilicate glass were carried out to verify the effectiveness of improvement on surface quality through heat-treatment. Finally, the reasons for the discrepancy between theory and experiment are investigated through the simulation, and the effects of wavelength and the water content in the material are further investigated.</p>

Abstract:Calcium borosilicate glasses with varying Si/Ca ratios (with constant Si/B value) have been successfully prepared using a normal melt-quench technique. Structural features were investigated through infrared (IR) spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy and differential thermal analysis (DTA). The IR and Raman spectra showed a Si/Ca ratio-dependent structure of borosilicate, which can provide valuable information to predict the composition and structure relations in the glasses. Conversion of BO3 to BO4 units was driven mainly by the disproportionation reaction between BO3 units and CaO when 0.5 <= Si/Ca <= 0.7. However, the BO3 units captured the non-bridging oxygens of Q(1) units when 1.1 <= Si/Ca <= 1.3, resulting in the formation of more BO4 and Si-O-Si bonds. Q(n) (n = 0, 1, 2, 3, 4) notation was used to represent the SiO4 tetrahedral units, where n is the number of bridging oxygen per SiO4 unit. The intermediate phase was presented when 0.7 < Si/Ca < 1.1. Variations in density, glass transition temperature and thermal stability as functions of Si/Ca ratios correspond to the change in BO4, BO3 and SiO4 structural units. The intermediate phase results in maximum density, minimum molar volumes and maximum T-g, which can be expected to be the optimum candidate for applications.

Abstract:Bismuthate glasses have garnered increasing attention in the fields of optics, packaging, and electronic pastes due to their remarkable stability and high visible light transmission. Nevertheless, high sealing temperature, high expansion coefficient, and poor wettability remain significant challenges in their application. Herein, we report a carefully designed approach that begins with bismuthate glasses of well-defined composition and coats them with various carbon materials to form different C@aminated glass composites by hydrothermal synthesis. This work investigates the effects of different carbon materials on the glass structure and properties, such as melting temperature, crystallinity, wettability, and expansion coefficient, and establishes the redox reaction mechanism involved in glass crystallization formation. Graphene oxide, with its different number of functional distributions and oxygen content, exhibits the largest decrease in softening point and softening-to-melting point temperature difference, the highest increase in wettability, and the greatest reduction in expansion coefficient compared to other carbon materials. In addition, different carbon materials promote a greater variety and strength of crystallization. GO@glass exhibits the most moderate reactivity and generates a significant amount of crystallization at the interface when co-sintered with Si substrates, indicating that the inclusion of crystalline phases can improve the bond strength of the glass. This work provides new insights into designing high-performance bismuthate glasses and promoting their applications.

Abstract:In this work, we report on advanced insights into the effects of fluxing on Fe50Ni30P13C7 bulk metallic glasses. We find that the employed oxide fluxing agent results in significant incorporation of boron in the alloy by atom probe tomography analysis. It demonstrates that the improved glass-forming ability induced by fluxing attributes to not only the reduction of heterogeneous nucleation, but also boron alloying. In addition, the more densely packed microstructure of the fluxed alloys is also related to amount of boron addition. Such an understanding is of great importance to adequately process glass-forming liquids, in order to achieve optimized bulk metallic glass parts with enhanced thicknesses and improved mechanical properties.

Abstract:SiO2-B2O3-CaO-P2O5 system bioactive glasses added with 0～9 mol％ SrO were prepared by a polymer foam replication method .The effect of SrO content on the structure and bioactive properties were investigated with DSC ,SEM ,FTIR ,XRD ,ICP method .The re-sults showed that the sintering temperature of the bioactive glasses is 530 ℃ ,the porosity is 85％ and the compressive strength is 12 M Pa .With the increasement of SrO in glass struc-ture ,the intensity of Si-O vibrations decreased .T he concentration of Ca2+ increased and the concentration of B3+ decreased with the increasement of SrO after immersing in SBF for the same time ,and the bioglass exhibited good bioactivity .
