Abstract:A new method of circuit reduction for memory logic parameter is proposed. The method simplifies the circuit by judging whether logic state of transistor alters or not while inputting specialized stimulate wave. The studies show it reduces the number of the transistor greatly and holds nicely functional performance and electrical characteristic of circuit. The precision of logic parameter extracted by this new method is very good and it cuts short greatly the extraction time. The experimental results show that it is efficient.

Abstract:Taking advantage of the circuit structure is regular and only corresponsive memory cell is active while inputting a set of specified stimulate wave, a new method of DRAM logic parameter extraction was proposed, which reduced the non-active memory cell and merged the loads of active Bit line. The DRAM logic parameter stimulate wave algorithm was proposed, which generated automatically the stimulate wave according to the circuit function and avoided personal error. Analysis shows that this method has good DRAM functional performance and electrical characteristic, and that the precision of the logic parameter extracted is good and the extraction time is greatly reduced.
Sparsity-aware model reduction for post-layout circuit simulation

Abstract:Post-layout simulation becomes more and more challenging due to ever increasing parasitics. Reducing the order of systems does not necessarily result in improvement in simulation time. What really affects the simulation time is the network complexity, which is determined by both the size and density of the network. Only reducing the size may worsen the density and in turn the complexity of the “reduced” system may be even higher compared with the original systems. We thus proposed a model complexity reduction which comprises sparsity-aware model reduction followed by model sparsification. Experiments show that for realistic post-layout simulation problems, the proposed model complexity reduction provides 3X~5X speed-ups compared with simulation using the original circuits.

Abstract:The time cost in integrated circuit simulation is an important consideration in the design. This paper investigates the model order reduction of interconnect circuit networks to facilitate numerical analysis. A novel fast and accurate time reduced order model is proposed to simplify the interconnection network structure analysis and perform a fast simulation. The novelty of this study is the use of the power function sum to extend the approximate function to replace the original system’s state function. We give several simulations to verify the effectiveness of the algorithm. The innovation of this model is due to its use of the approximate function of power series expansion to replace the state function of the original system.
A Time Constant Estimation Method for Block RC Circuits with Application to Power Grid Analysis

Abstract:Realizable reduction methods for RC network analysis are preferred in practice because of their convenience for integration in SPICE simulators and benefit of automatic passivity preservation. TICER (Time Constant Equilibration Reduction) is a well-known circuit reduction method proposed about twenty years ago, but has limitation in its node-wise implementation. Recently, an improved version by block RC reduction is proposed which is demonstrated with better computation efficiency and flexibility in implementation. However, the multi-dimensional extension requires a time constant estimation method for block RC circuits, which is a problem less well studied in the literature. In this paper we propose a RICE-based moment-matching computation method for this task. According to the working frequency we are interested in, we introduce a block circuit time constant (BCTC) measure. We verify by experiment on power grid networks that by eliminating RC blocks with BCTC less than a threshold, elimination would result in less error in the power grid transient simulation.

Abstract:In this paper, a novel Resistive Random-Access Memory (RRAM) read circuit has been designed and verified by simulation based on the RRAM model and parasitic capacitance of the circuit. Simulation results demonstrate the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed circuit, with accurate reading of RRAM states and fast reading speed in the nanosecond range. The sense margin of the proposed circuit has improved as the array size increases, enhancing its application for advanced node RRAM array manufacture. Compared with conventional circuits, the proposed circuit achieved power consumption reduction of 6% and area reduction of 46.9 um2, resulting in a 97.5% reduction in area, providing an effective solution to address the cost and chip size challenges associated with RRAM industrialization. The authors proposed a novel read circuit for Resistive Random-Access Memory (RRAM) based on the RC delay effect. Compared with conventional circuits, the proposed circuit achieved power consumption reduction of 6% and area reduction of 46.9 um2, providing an effective solution to address the cost and chip size challenges associated with RRAM industrialization.image

Abstract:Neuromorphic chips constructed by memristor crossbar array have been introduced to realize in-memory computation. The simulations are usually conducted by full-wave simulation or SPICE-like simulations, which can still be time-consuming for large-scale examples. This work proposed a new method based on the Latency Insertion Method (LIM) that can be orders of magnitude faster than commercial software on memristor crossbar array simulations.

Abstract:Associative memory is an important mechanism describing biological learning process and forgetting process, which is of great significance for constructing neuromorphic computing systems, as well as simulating brain-like functions. As a result, the design and implementation of associative memory circuit has become a research hotspot in the field of artificial neural networks. Pavlov conditioning experiment, as one of the classic cases of associative memory, its hardware implementation still suffers from some limitations such as complex circuit configuration, imperfect function and unclear process description. Based on this, a memory circuit is proposed based on memristor full-fuction pavlov associative in this paper, which combines the classical conditioned reflection theory and nano science and technology. Firstly, the Ag/TiOx nanobelt/Ti memristor is prepared using hydrothermal synthesis method and magnetron sputtering method, and its performance testing is conducted jointly by electrochemical workstation, four-probe test bench, and transmission electron microscope. Then, the mathematical model and SPICE circuit model of the Ag/TiOx nanobelt/Ti memristor are built up respectively, based on the electrochemical data derived from the performance testing, and the model accuracy is verified by objective evaluation. Furthermore, the proposed Ag/TiOx nanobelt/Ti memristor model is applied to the implementation of a full-function Pavlovian associative memory circuit. The specific circuit description and function analysis illustrate that this circuit is able to simulate two kinds of learning process and three kinds of forgetting process in Pavlov experiment. Finally, a series of computer simulation and analysis are carried out, which verifies the validity and effectiveness of the entire scheme.
A new efficient CAD tool for reduction of large RC networks based on PACT algorithm

Abstract:In this paper, a new efficient CAD tool for reduction of large RC networks based on PACT algorithm is presented. In current deep submicron design, the layout-dependant parasitic resistors and capacitors become very critical for speed and signal integrity. The RC networks extracted from layout are so large that they need to be reduced before circuit simulation. Among the RC reduction algorithms, the algorithm of PACT (Pole Analysis via Congruence Transformations) [4] has been proved to have several advantages. However, the original implementation of the algorithm destroys the sparsity of the internal capacitance matrix. Consequently, the LASO process [4], used in the computation of the dominant eigenvalues and eigenvectors, becomes very time-consuming. Therefore, the efficiency of the algorithm needs to be improved. In this paper, we construct a new RC reduction tool with a new implementation of PACT. In order to maintain the sparsity of the matrices, we use a special Lanczos algorithm to directly compute the eigenvalues and eigenvectors by solving a large sparse symmetric generalized eigenvalue problem. The application of the tool to several RC networks has shown that the reduction ratio of RC elements can be up to 10%. This tool greatly outperforms the original implementation in both memory requirement and time complexity.

Abstract:A generalized mathematical model for current-controlled fractional-order memory elements is introduced in this work. The model characterizes constant-phase elements (CPEs) when its nonlinearity parameter is zero (k=0$$ k=0 $$); otherwise (k not equal 0$$ k\ne 0 $$), it characterizes three main types of fractional-order memory elements (memristor, meminductor, and memcapacitor). Time-domain analyses of the voltage and energy relations of the model are derived and verified via numerical and circuit simulations. Some new deductions on the effects of the respective fractional-order values are recorded: Each fractional-order element transposes into their corresponding resistive or memristive properties as their fractional-order values are varied; the meminductor's voltage response have undesired initial trails due to the fractional differentiator; the hysteresis loop of the meminductor is only pinched when its fractional-order values are unequal. A new CPE emulator circuit is designed, and a generalized memelement emulator is also designed and verified in PSpice circuit simulator: Circuit simulation results confirm the numerical analysis in all cases.
Structure-Preserving-Based Model-Order Reduction of Parameterized Interconnect Systems

Abstract:In recent years, the continued miniaturization of VLSI circuits leads to the need for more efficient simulation of large-scale linear dynamical systems with ever-increasing state-space dimension. The linear dynamical systems in VLSI circuit simulation are RC or RCL models of the VLSI circuit's interconnected system. Model-order reduction is an important technique to reduce such a high complexity. Along the technology scaling, the indetermination in the manufacturing process causes variations in the critical dimensions and interlevel dielectric thickness of interconnects, which could make the system performance unpredictable and produce a significant parametric yield loss. An efficient exploitation of these design activities results in a parameterized model-order reduction technique able to reduce large systems of equations with respect to all of the variable parameters of the circuit, (i.e., resistance, capacitance, and inductance). For this purpose, we propose a novel parameterized model-order reduction method for interconnect variation systems, which is based on an efficient and reliable combination of invariable structure-preserving model-order reduction (SPMOR) methods and variable parameter retaining schemes. It is referred to as a parameterized interconnect model-order reduction via structure-preserving algorithm. The SPMOR model yields the same form of the original state equation and preserves the passivity of the parameterized RC and RLC networks, like the well-known passive reduced-order interconnect algorithm for nonparameterized RC and RLC networks. The most important benefit it entails is the ability to preserve the probability characteristic of the original interconnect systems. Pertinent numerical examples are proposed to validate the proposed SPMOR approach.

Abstract:For simulations of emerging neuromorphic circuits an analog memory modeling strategy with the dynamic time evolution method (DTEM) is reported. Dynamic state variables are needed to trace the physical quantities of the memory state representations. In a SPICE simulator time varying nodal voltages of the transient domain are capable to emulate changings of these physical quantities thus leveraging sub-circuits (SC) with additional nodes is one feasible method. To accommodate large scale simulation of neuromorphic circuits, the dynamic time evolution method is proposed to trace the varying memory states in the spiking-time-dependent-plasticity (STDP). Circuit matrix size is reduced with the DTEM implementations thus efficient simulation speedups are achieved.

Abstract:A modified reduced-order method for RC networks which takes a division-and-conquest strategy is presented.The whole network is partitioned into a set of sub-networks at first,then each of them is reduced by Krylov subspace techniques,and finally all the reduced sub-networks are incorporated together.With some accuracy,this method can reduce the number of both nodes and components of the circuit comparing to the traditional methods which usually only offer a reduced net with less nodes.This can markedly accelerate the sparse-matrix-based simulators whose performance is dominated by the entity of the matrix or the number of components of the circuits.

Abstract:It is quite common to use multiple linear modules with asynchronous operation, e.g., the pulsed power supply (PPS) system for electromagnetic launch (EML), to provide higher power or the complex signal modulation function. Up to now, numerical simulation has been the only way to solve these problems but suffers from long running time and thus limits the large-scale optimization and control for these systems. This article proposes a rigorous port-equivalent order reduction method based on the Thevenin equivalence and short-circuit equivalence. This method can simplify the solution of multimodule linear circuits into the solution of multiple lower order circuits. If lower order circuits can be calculated analytically, the fully analytical calculation of the multimodule circuit can be realized. Otherwise, reducing the order can also greatly reduce the time of circuit simulation. On this basis, taking the meat grinder with a self-charged capacitor and thyristor (SECT) multimodule circuit as an example, its rapid and analytical calculation is demonstrated. Compared with the Simulink simulation, the results show that the method proposed in this article is about 50 times faster than the simulation, and the root-mean-square error (RMSE) is very small, which means that the calculation accuracy can well meet the requirements.

Abstract:Deep neural networks have exhibited superior performance in many areas such as image classification and so on. Due to the “memory bottleneck the energy efficiency of traditional chips is limited. The RRAM based computing-in-memory chip offers a new computing paradigm to remove data transfer between computing units and memory units. However, the nonidealities of RRAM device and analog circuits will reduce the on-chip accuracy. Here, we propose a novel codesign method to reduce the accuracy drop in the post-mapping phase of computing-in-memory system. First, we introduce the architecture of computing-in-memory chip and develop the compact model of the device and peripheral circuits. To reduce the accuracy drop, we present a novel codesign method by add nonidealities of device and circuits in the training phase of neural network. Finally, we found the post-mapping accuracy could recover more than 20% accuracy after device and circuit aware training.

Abstract:An improved memory system simulator based on DRAMSim2 is presented. The memory system simulator has been widely used in the design space exploration of the SoC (System on Chip). DRAMSim2 is one of the more common DDR2/3 memory system simulators. A memory system consists of the memory controller and the DRAM device. DRAMSim2 models the memory controller in a general way, which makes it impractical to faithfully track the behavior of a specific memory controller. In this work, we present an improved memory system simulator based on DRAMSim2. In response to the differences between the memory controller DRAMSim2 modeled and the practical controller, part of DRAMSim2 is modified and improved, considering the structure characterizations of the practical controller. Experiments show that the improved simulator properly matches the practical memory system.

Abstract:As the convergence of programmable cores, memory blocks. sensors and other analog/RF circuits on system-on-a-chip (SoC) for networking and wireless applications is striding forward swiftly, there is an increased demand for accurate circuit-level verification of SoC designs. This paper presents a new simulation method of interconnect-dominant circuits via a two-step LU matrix factorization method. By using this new method, unnecessary repetitions of arithmetic operations are avoided in circuit analysis. As a result, plenty of simulation time is saved without losing accuracy. The simulation results show that this method is much more efficient than HSPICE while simulating interconnect-dominant networks.
P-TICER: An Effective Parallel TICER Acceleration Method for Model Order Reduction

Abstract:In the field of post simulation verification in in-tegrated circuit design, Time-Constant Equilibration Reduction (TICER) is a well-known and widely used algorithm for model order reduction. However, the TICER for large-scale circuits is time-consuming. Moreover, there is a contradiction between the node compression ratio and circuit sparsity. In this paper, an effective TICER-based optimization parellel acceleration algorithm called P-TICER is proposed. An adaptive circuit judgment partitioning strategy based on graph partitioning is proposed to partition circuits and perform multi-threaded parallel acceleration. The compression ratio and sparsity of the circuit are optimized and balanced. Moreover, RC-In-RC-Out structure is designed, which is realizable and seamlessly integra table with other simulators as it takes circuit netlists as input and output. We apply P- TICER to the RC circuits with two different types and nodes scale ranging from 40k to 2 million. Experimental results show that compared with the conventional TICER, the proposed P- TICER is up to 24 times faster, while achieving a node compression ratio up to 50% with the relative error remained within 0.2%.

Abstract:An efficient time-domain trapezoidal difference based model order reduction(MOR) method is proposed to further improve the efficiency and accuracy of the existing methods for interconnect circuits.A recursive relation is derived from the trapezoidal difference formulation of the time-domain equation of interconnect circuits.The recursive relation formulates a non-homogenous Krylov subspace.A non-homogeneous Arnoldi method is employed to construct the orthonormal basis of this non-homogenous Krylov subspace.The orthonormal basis is then used to project the original interconnect circuits to reduced-order models.The proposed method can guarantee the value matching of the state vector after time-domain trapezoidal difference for the original interconnect circuits and the reduced-order models.The accuracy of the reduced-order models can thus be guaranteed.The MOR procedure is numerically stable and the reduced-order models also preserve the passivity.In comparison with the existing time-domain methods,the computational cost of the proposed method is significantly reduced.Compared with the existing frequency-domain methods,the proposed method can achieve higher accuracy.

Abstract:A SPICE model for phase change memories (PCM) without relying on macro modules is developed in this work. The crystal fraction, physical geometry, and the conduction path of the amorphous region are treated as dynamic state variables to keep track of the memory cell status during SET and RESET. The memory cell resistance is calculated based on a detail 3-D resistance model to capture its transitional behavior during switching. The detail physical formulation correctly reproduced a recent observation of oscillation during the SET operation. The model has been implemented in SPICE, and the convergence of the model is demonstrated by simulations of a complete PCM array. The use of dynamic state variables also significantly reduces the number of internal nodes to one, which helps convergence and reduces the simulation time.
