Abstract:Based on shear strength mechanism of rock joints and the selection principle and requirement of similar material,a new type of similar material with the mixture of high-strength cement,silica fume,superplasticizer,standard sand and water is developed.A large number of physico-mechanical tests are performed by using samples and rock joint models made from the new similar material.The results show that the compressive strength and elastic modulus of similar material are close to the mechanical feature of original rock;and similar material can cover low and medium-intensive rock types through adjusting the contents of different materials.The surface morphology and undulation of simulated structure surfaces made with similar material and multi-scale molds are consistent with original rock′s surface.According to direct shear test,surface wear degree,roughness coefficient attenuation law and failure mode of original rock structural plane and simulated structural plane agree well;and the difference between test results and theoretical values is small.The similar material with the advantage of steady physico-mechanical properties,production convenience and low cost can replace natural rock joints to do different dimensional and repeated destructive rock joint tests.

Abstract:This experiment made use of hand lay-up to generate nonwoven reinforced composites which used glass fiber nonwovens, glass fiber felt and PE hot rolling nonwovens as the reinforcement, thermosetting unsaturated resin as the matrix, and tested their tensile and bending mechanical properties, then analyzed mechanical properties by gray relative analysis. The results show that when glass fiber felt is used as reinforcement and its content greater than 60%, the comprehensive mechanical properties of the composite are the best. At the same time, we observed the tensile fractures to analyze the failure mechanism of the composites.

Abstract:3D fine woven punctured C/C composite is a typical heterogeneous material. In this paper, by macroscopic tensile and compression tests, the fracture pattern morphology under different loading types and geometric sizes has been observed. The effects of different tensile and compression lengths and different transverse section areas on tension and compression property have been discussed. The change of stress-strain curves caused by the size effect has been analyzed. The relation of the dispersibility of material mechanics property and material geometric sizes has been investigated.

Abstract:Five kinds of 45# steel samples with concave features on the surface were manufactured using Laser Texturing Technology (LTT). Optimum design theory was used to design the experiment, and a two-level orthogonal table — L16 (215) design was adopted. Micro-wear and micro-friction experienced by samples with concave surface features and samples with smooth surfaces were compared experimentally. The wear resistance of samples with concave surface features was increased most, and different surface morphologies had different effects on friction and wear properties.

Abstract:To acquire materials of higher specific stiffness and strength, stretching dominated lattice materials reinforced by carbon fibers were designed and manufactured. The mechanical behaviors were predicted and experimented. The imperfections of lattice materials, such as the waviness of the struts, non-circular cross-sections and cantilever ribs, greatly influenced their performance. The bending effects of the imperfections were predicted and compared with the experiment results. Although influenced by the imperfections, carbon reinforced lattice materials are still much stiffer and stronger than foams and honeycombs.
Mechanical Properties of Steel Crane Beam Strengthened by CFRP

Abstract:In this paper, the mechanical properties of steel crane beam strengthened by carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) were researched in details. The research work was developed by the experimental method to principally examine the capacity of steel crane beams strengthened by CFRP under static loads and the anti-fatigue character under cyclic loads. The test results show that those properties of the beams are efficiently promoted after strengthened with the CFRP. And the reinforcement effects are related to the layer number of the CFRP. Meanwhile, a numerical analysis for the test process had been conducted by finite element method (FEM), which got a consistent result with the experiment. The finding of this paper indicates that the way is achievable that improving the mechanical character of the steel crane beam with CFRP.

Abstract:The application of carbon fiber/epoxy composites places more requirements on the selection of fabrics to meet the needs of structural components. Due to the large design space for reinforced fabric patterns, the relationship between the reinforcements and properties is essential to further understand. Four typical fabrics were manufactured in this research, named non-interlaced bidirectional fabrics, plain weave laminated fabrics, angle-interlock fabrics and bidirectional angle-interlock fabrics. The structural features of fabrics were analyzed by using representative geometric unit, and the symmetry properties were discussed based on group theory. Vacuum assistant resin transfer molding was adopted to obtain the corresponding resin matrix composite specimens. Quasi-static tensile and bending tests were conducted on these specimens. The stress-strain curves of specimens were illustrated, and the failure characterizations were also analyzed in mesoscopic scale. The results showed that the high crimp of yarns reduced the stability of composites. Both the tensile and flexural properties were affected by the curvature of yarns. The research results provided a theoretical basis for the selection of fabric structure and the application of carbon fiber/epoxy composites.

Abstract:A single shear test about CFRP-steel member was performed to investigate the shearing bond performance between CFRP sheet and steel member. Based on experimental data, adhesive length, the number of layers and sticking technology, and the effects of the parameters are discussed, and the bond mechanism is described. The adhesive interface performance is examined analytically and compared with test data. Good agreement is reached.

Abstract:To improve the laminate quality and the interlaminar mechanical properties of thick and lightweight composites, an efficient tufted sandwich structure with a nonwoven core is developed. Four sets of samples were set up based on three variables: foam, tufting thread and nonwovens. These 3D sandwich-fabric composites undergo a shear test and three-point bending test to study the influence of these variables on the shear and flexural performance and failure modes. Compared to the sandwich composites with a pure foam core, the ultimate shear stress and bending stress of a sandwich with a nonwoven core can increase 76% and 27%, respectively. Inserting tufting thread can significantly improve the core shear stress with a 300% increase over the structure without the full-thickness yarns. In addition, two analytical models are developed to predict the core-shear modulus and bending rigidity of the tufted sandwich structure. Overall, the 3D sandwich-fabric composite with both nonwoven and tufting thread has the best shear and flexural-failure resistance and is the optimal structural design with great potential for bearing more load as a structural component.

Abstract:The mechanical properties between three-dimensional (3D)braided and laminated composites were comparatively studied. These two sorts of composites were produced by the same carbon fiber,resin matrix and the same preparation process (RTM).There were totally four kinds of 3D multi-directionally braided composites,which contain 3D four-direction (3D4d ),3D five-direction (3D5d),3D six-direction (3D6d)and 3D seven-direction (3D7d)braiding respectively.And the three kinds of laminated composites manufactured utilizing tire cord fabric were 0°,90°and[0 /(45)2 /90]2s laminates.The mechanical properties of braided and laminat-ed specimens were measured by the same tension,compression and shear testing methods.The results show that the properties of lami-nated composites are worse than that of 3D-braided composite except 0°unidirectional laminates.As to the braided composites,the smaller the braiding angle is,the better longitudinal properties and worse shear properties are.The braiding fabric is also an important factor which affects the mechanical properties.Meanwhile,the failure modes were also discussed,and the results show that,braiding fabric and the braiding angle are the main factors that affect the failure mode.

Abstract:3D sandwich structure with foam core reinforced by composite columns, a new concept of sandwich structure, is designed and manufactured. Five types of samples with different densities of composite columns (1, 1.5, 2, 2.5 and 4 columns/cm2) are fabricated, tested and analyzed under bending, out-of-plane compressive and shear loadings. The mechanical properties of compressive, bending and shear increase with increasing of the densities of composite columns. The failure modes were investigated under the optical microscope. The plasticity of the column–core sandwich structure subjected to bending and shear loads can be explained by the mechanism of the inclination and chain-like failure of composite columns.

Abstract:This article presents a nonlinear analysis to explore mechanical properties of the membrane structures made of laminated woven fabrics by numerical simulation and experiments. Stresses-moduli response surfaces are created with the data of stress-strain curves measured from the biaxial test. To apply this method into finite element method (FEM) analysis, complete cubic polynomials of these surfaces are obtained and created the nonlinear material model under user defined subroutine UMAT of ABAQUS. A cruciform specimen is analyzed adapting the nonlinear model, which is subjected to biaxial tensile under the condition of stress ratio of 1:1, 1:2, 2:1, 3:1, 1:3, 0:1 and 1:0. It is shown that the results of nonlinear material model agree well with experimental results.

Abstract:To investigate the effect of glue's adhesive on the mechanical properties of CFRP and its reinforced concrete structure's mechanical behavior,the CFRP sheets and concrete beams were prefabricated,and the mechanical properties of them were investigated by the axial tension and four-point bending beams tests.The experiment compare of carbon cloth's tension strength with and without glue indicates that the epoxy resin can not only make the fiber adhesive united but also increase the tensile strength.The strain gauges were adhered on the surface of CFRP of a four-point bending concrete beam.With the electrometric method,the damage process curves of the materials were obtained.Through the mechanics analysis model and the least square method,the axis force and shear stress distributions of CFRP were analyzed,respectively.With the debonding of interface between FRP and concrete beam,the maximum value of tension stress of FRP reduces,thus a strain rebound phenomenon appears.

Abstract:The relationship between the weaves and the mechanical properties of several high performance fabrics,including PBO(p-phenylene benzobisoxazole) fabrics,was investigated.Among them the fabrics made from PBO fiber showed better tensile properties.Laminated envelope materials,produced by bonding fabrics together with other function components were tested mechanically.For laminated envelope material,breaking strength is mainly dependent on the fibers making them up and the structural characteristics of the fabric.Besides the fibers being used,tearing strength relates strongly to the linear density of the yarns.Higher linear density of the yarns would be useful to increase the tearing strength.
The main factors analyzing the effect of microstructure cell on the mechanical properties of L-CFRP

Abstract:This paper studied the effect of the microstructure cell on the mechanical properties of L-CFRP. Combined with finite element technology, and through a set of orthogonal tests, the main variables in the microstructure cell that affect the mechanical properties of L-CFRP were found, and the representative volume of interlayer-enhanced L-CFRP was analyzed. The results of simulation analysis and the experiments showed that the main factors affecting the mechanical properties of L-CFRP were the width-to-thickness ratio of the fiber cross-section and the ratio of fiber bundle clearance to thickness of the fiber cross-section. The simulation results were consistent with the experiment results.

Abstract:In order to expand the applications of cold-formed thin-walled steel structures, this study proposes a new type of composite wallboard composed of cold-formed thin-walled C-shaped steel and multi-layer concrete, in which C-shaped steel serves as the skeleton, foam concrete acts as the thermal insulation material, and fine aggregate concrete and cement mortar play the part of envelopes. The composite wallboard can be made in a factory assembly line, meeting the requirements of the building (civil and structural) industry. Two steel-frame composite wallboard shear walls were subjected to reciprocating loading, with the connection mode as the design parameter, to investigate the seismic performance of the structure. The failure mode, hysteresis curve, skeleton curve, strength degradation, stiffness degradation, ductility, and energy dissipation capacity of the specimens were analyzed. On this basis, the finite element (FE) model of the steel-frame composite wallboard was established, and the model's accuracy was verified by comparing the bearing capacity and the skeleton curve. Results show that the structure shows shear failure characteristics, and the cement mortar layer and the fine aggregate concrete layer are separated from the C-shaped steel after being crushed. The infilled foam concrete is also crushed, and the welding seams between the extended C-shaped steel and steel frame of the WP-1 specimen are damaged. The hysteresis curves of the two specimens have a clear pinch, but the area enclosed by the hysteresis loop is large, and the energy dissipation capacity is also present. The yield load and ultimate load of the WP-2 specimen are higher than those of the WP-1 specimen, indicating that the higher the connection strength between the composite wallboard and the steel frame, the greater the ultimate carrying capacity of the specimen. The established FE model can accurately estimate the seismic performance of steel-frame composite wallboard shear walls.

Experiment Study of Mechanical Properties of 3D Orthogonal Woven Composite

Abstract:Mechanical properties of 3D orthogonal woven Kevlar/vinyl composite were studied by a series of tests on MTS(Material Test System). The experiment results indicate that the tensile strength along the warp yarns and the compression strength along the thickness direction have certain strain rate effect,and the compression strength along the thickness is much higher than the strength in the plane,but the tensile strength along warp yarn and weft yarn are almost same.Some necessary qualitative analyses about these phenomena were carried out,considering the textile fiber style.Finally,according to the structure characters of the 3D-OWC(Orthogonal Woven Composite),a group of formula to estimate the Young's Module,and the estimated values are in good agreement with the experimental values.
