Abstract:The Wenhu Sheng family was one of the famous “prestigious families” in Jiaxing during the Ming and Qing Dynasties.In addition to the genealogy, early documents of the family were scattered in local chronicles of the Ming Dynasty.There are different versions of the family history in these early documents.Through detailed analysis of these texts, we can not only get a glimpse of the appearance of the ancestors of Sheng and their father-in-law family, the Zhu-Zhang family, from Yuan to early Ming Dynasty, but also reveal the process of family history reconstructing by Sheng family during the Ming Dynasty and the changes in cultural perceptions during the process.The Zhu-Zhang-Sheng family in early Ming and before did not possess an orthodox Confucian-style patriarchal culture and organizational form, but instead had a strong Buddhist overtone.Since the mid-Ming Dynasty, when gradually succeeding in the imperial examinations, the Sheng family gradually concealed the Buddhist overtones of their ancestral sacrifice rituals, constructed their own and the Zhu-Zhang’s illustrious ancestral origins, and created the family history narrative of “Qiantang Linguan Station”.At the same time, by compiling genealogy, establishing family ancestral halls, and purchasing sacrificial properties, this family has completed the transformation to “lineage” from both ideological and physical levels at the latest in the late 16th century.
