Intangible Protection of Environmental Spaces in Ancient Towns and Its Significance: a Case Study of Ancient Qijiang Town in Sichuan

Abstract:The well-preserved small historic cities and towns in China that have went through thousands of years of vicissitudes play a signifi cant role in studying the town history and architectural spaces,and inheriting behavioral cultures of the locals.However,driven by economic profi ts,the current protection and development of ancient towns focus on ancient images,but neglect behavioral cultures and spiritual connotations,lose their evolution sequence and the relationship between tangible and intangible characters.Protection of ancient towns,as the author asserts,means not simple restoration and simulation of ancient buildings,or blind pursuit of new approaches,but equal importance to repairing architectural forms,protecting the environmental spaces,and intangible behavioral cultures and spiritual connotations of the locals that have been or will be lost in the history.It is the signifi cance of protecting ancient town environment and its history and culture.

Research on the Protection and Development of Ancient Town Cultural Landscape Based on "Four State" Elements: Illustrated by the Example of Qikou

Abstract: Abstract — With the deepening of the research on the connotation of cultural heritage and human geography, cultural landscape takes landscape as a cultural product, integrates and blends cultural and natural heritage to explore the cultural value behind its material landscape. Qikou ancient town is a typical traditional settlement with homomorphism of mountain and water veins. Its cultural accumulation and natural landscape play an important role in its development. Therefore, this paper will combine the material and cultural elements of Qikou ancient town to analyze the composition of the cultural landscape of the ancient town, and explore the protection and utilization of the cultural landscape of Qikou ancient town from the four aspects of ecology, form, cultural form and business form, so as to provide effective strategies for the development of the ancient town.

THE ANALYSIS ON CULTURAL CHARACTERISTICS OF THE OLD TOWN OF LIJIANG IN THE TIDE OF COMMERCIALIZATION

Abstract:The 30 years development of Lijiang tourism presents two clues,including the commercialization of representation and intrinsic cultural consciousness. Based on the interview sample,the primary reason of attracting tourists is considered to be the specific local w isdom in Lijiang. Which makes it present the cultural intention of global leisure ancient capital. Tw o academic issues are discussed in the end:( 1) The heritage protection of the old tow n of Lijiang City should consist of both material cultural heritage and intangible cultural heritage.( 2) As a key tow n on the ancient horse and tea road,the old tow n of Lijiang City should not abandon the caravan Na-xi culture and four-in-one( human-w ater-city-environment) culture of the doctrine of the mean,and other characteristics in its future development. The depth of the high quality tourism and cultural heritage is in line w ith the tide of w orld heritage tourism and sustainable.

Abstract:Yangmei Ancient Town, located in Nanning, Guangxi, is an ancient town with a long history and unique culture. In order to improve the landscape quality of the ancient town, this study uses the place spirit theory to carry on the landscape transformation design of Yangmei Ancient Town. In this design, the historical and cultural characteristics of the ancient town, the living habits and needs of local residents, as well as the roads, squares and buildings of the ancient town are fully considered, and partial reservation and partial node design are carried out. By optimizing the road layout and landscape greening, the overall environment of the ancient town is more beautiful and livable. At the same time, the ancient buildings have been repaired and protected to retain the historical style of the town. In the landscape transformation design, a cultural exhibition area is set up to strengthen the publicity and dissemination of the ancient town culture, so that more people can understand and pay attention to the charm of this ancient town. At the same time, the principles of sustainable development, ecological restoration and people-oriented are emphasized in the design, which provides references for the design of the ancient town, improves the charm of the ancient town and improves the urban environment.

Abstract:With the trend of wide development of tourism commerce in heritage sites, the tourism commercialization has brought changes into the social structure, cultural atmosphere and other aspects of heritage sites. It is necessary to deeply study the theme, process and expression of the tourism commercialization of heritage sites, so as to provide the basis for effective protection of heritage sites and the proper guidance for tourism commerce development. With the case study of the old town of Lijiang, the World Culture Heritage city, the changes of population and spatial distribution brought by the tourism commerce development are studied from the perspectives of shop types, merchandise categories, operator composition and spatial distribution, and the potential impact on cultural heritage sites is analyzed.

Abstract:LIJIANG City sits where the Yunnan-Guizhou and Qinghai-Tibet Plateaus converge in southwest China’s Yunnan Province. The Old Town of Lijiang, a listed world cultural heritage site, has 900 years of history preserved along its narrow streets. To me, though this was not my first visit, Lijiang and its environs are shrouded in mystery. More than just an ancient city with winding alleyways and old houses, its unique customs and legends fill outsiders with fascination. The locals still enjoy the old ways of living and thinking. To the north, high hills rise up above the fields towards Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, the holy incarnation of the local Naxi people’s patron god. Returning to Lijiang, I found that still holds the same ease and grace, and time here seems frozen.

Abstract:Purpose The ancient town of Lijiang is a representative place of ethnic minorities in China’s southwest border area jointly built by many ethnic groups. Its rich and diversified history, culture and architecture as well as its artistic and spiritual values need to be better retained and explored. Design/methodology/approach The protection and inheritance of Lijiang’s cultural heritage will be improved through the construction of digital memory resources. To guide Lijiang’s digital memory construction, this study explores strategies of digital memory construction by analyzing four case studies of well-known memory projects from China and America. Findings From the case studies analysis, factors of digital memory construction were identified and compared. Factors led to the discussion of strategies for constructing the digital memory of Lijiang within its design, construction and service phases. Originality/value The ancient town of Lijiang is a famous historical and cultural city in China, and it is also a representative place of ethnic minorities in the border area jointly built by many ethnic groups. The rich culture should be preserved and digitalized to offer better use for the whole nation.

Abstract:The authors apply the concept of “territory”, “place” and “route ” to analyze the spatial structure of Lijiang City, a famous Chinese historical city of Naxi minority, which was listed as one of the World Heritage cities in 1997. The spatial structure of Lijiang City has a character of duality. Spiritua l territory and living territory, festal place and routine place, man-made rou te and natural route, all exist simultaneously as twin-spaces. The li ving space of Lijiang City becomes a spatial complex of various elements. In th is spatial complex, the daily places are ritualized and bear various cult ural meanings through the interaction of multiple elements at different levels, a nd the seemingly trivial place exhibit dramatic cultural sceneries. The ritualiz ed space is therefore one of the most attractive “cultural landscapes” in Chin ese historical cities, which demands more conservational consideration.

Abstract:In 2019, China joined Italy as the two countries with the most UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Among the Chinese heritage sites, the inhabited ancient towns, called Living Heritage, are the most difficult to protect in the eyes of many scholars. Only two Chinese ancient towns are listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites, including the Old Town of Lijiang in Yunnan province, the most important settlement of the Naxi people. This indicates Lijiang's significance in the protection of China's cultural heritage. As one of three heritage sites within Lijiang Old Town itself, Shuhe is a pilot site for tourist development and heritage protection, led by the local government. In contrast to the Model of Dayan, the largest area and the earliest tourist development heritage site in Lijiang Old Town, Shuhe was renovated and modernised by a real estate company under the official guidance of the Lijiang government. This model was created to solve the contradiction between local development and cultural heritage protection in Shuhe. Since its renovation 17 years ago, the model of Shuhe has typical Chinese characteristics and has been a great influence on many other historical cities in China. After nearly 20 years of follow-up research, this study combs the development history of Shuhe Ancient Town, by analysing examples of architectural heritage transformation, and further reflects on the root causes of Shuhe development from the perspective of laws and regulations. The rapid development of tourism has become means for the local government and the people to lift themselves out of poverty at the cost of their historical heritage. The development of tourism has brought immediate economic benefits to the local government, developers, outside operators and local habitants in Lijiang. However, the original Naxi habitants have left their historic settlement, and the profound changes to the Naxi living environment have caused the Shuhe world heritage site to lose its original significance. In the renovation of heritage buildings, architects and craftsmen are not responsible for the modification of the historical heritage but are only tools for local governments, developers and outsider operators to gain wealth. The defects, backwardness and inability to fully implement the laws and regulations on heritage protection are the fundamental causes of Shuhe's problems, which reflect the huge gap between the administrators' awareness of heritage protection and the requirements of the professional guidelines of the UNESCO for the world cultural heritage protection.
Research into the Preservation and Renewal Patterns of Ancient Towns:A Case Study of Heping,Fujian,P.R.China

Abstract:Preservation and renewal of ancient towns has become a difficult problem as tourism has increased in these communities.This article presents a case study of Heping ancient town in Northern Fujian province,P.R.China.Based on interviews with local residents and additional investigation,the authors maintain that the preservation and renewal problems resulted from a poor regional economy,declining historical function and various value concepts.The authors also draw on preservation and renewal experiences and lessons in the ancient towns of Zhouzhuang and Lijiang.Preservation and construction contradictions can be resolved and the sustainable development and protection of ancient towns promoted only if the following are present: practical conditions in different areas of the town,effective government-led functions at all levels,wide public participation,and multiple preservation and renewal patterns supported by planners and architects.

Abstract:Through the applications of GIS,this article analyzes the quantities and qualities of some settlements' nature,such as geographic,cultural,economic and architectural subjects.The research includes 1086 administrative villages which locate in Dali and 448 in Li Jiang.The author is trying to conclude the rules and features of those settlements' development and distribution.Meanwhile,the author macroscopically analyzes the comprehensive conditions of the settlements,and the analysis results in specific sorting out some of them that well preserve traditional culture features,so it could provide some basic targets for further researching.

Abstract:The current situation of inhabitant replacement in Dayan Ancient Town was studied by means of applying GPS localization and measurement,questionnaire survey and interviewing the residents.The reasons for the replacement were analyzed in terms of the detailed daily life trifles of the residents in the ancient town and the influence upon the replacement were elaborated and some countermeasures to reduce and even to convert the replacement were proposed.

Exploring Characteristics and Patterns of In Situ Space Morphology: Perspective of the Historical and Cultural Canal Settlement

Abstract:During the development and evolution of settlements, space morphology created unique local cultural features and played an important role in guiding rural planning in the context of new-type urban development. The in situ characteristics of the space morphology of the ancient historical and cultural towns along the Grand Canal of China reflect the prints of the local culture and history over thousands of years and integrate modern life and the cultural memories of the citizens there. Using Yangliuqing Town, a famous historical and cultural town, as an example, this study quantitatively analyzes the in situ characteristics of the space morphology. It applies the UAV 3D model, POI data, actual site measurements, and other data to establish detailed models of the streets and lanes, quantifies the in situ characteristics of the space morphology of the streets and lanes in terms of space organizational characteristics and VGA manifestation, analyzes the influencing factors of the characteristics of in situ space morphology, and proposes guidelines for renewing ancient towns according to the in situ characteristics of space morphology. The research results indicate that 1 multidimensional factors influencing the historical development of the research area have been clarified for the three aspects of its status as a canal transport hub, canal settlement industries, and traditional residential courtyards in ancient towns; 2 the in situ space morphology of the streets in Yangliuqing Town is reflected in three aspects such as the core guiding and control of historical and cultural resources, the inherent influence of space element layout, and the attractiveness of street space; 3 it extracts the guidelines for the renewal of the ancient towns in terms of the space morphology strategy, the environmental element strategy, the interface attribute strategy, and the business attribute strategy. The research methods and conclusions boast great significance for clarifying the characteristics of the space morphology of the ancient towns along the Grand Canal and improving the practice of preservation there.

Abstract:The construction of historical and cultural blocks in ancient cities is a new direction for the development of tourism in historical and cultural cities. As the core of the famous historical and cultural city of Zhangzhou and an important window of the city's image, the ancient city of Zhangzhou plays a decisive role in the development of Zhangzhou. This article is based on the theoretical study of Kevin Lynch's "Image of the City", and analyzes the spatial form of the ancient city of Zhangzhou from the material form (roads, boundaries, areas, nodes and landmarks) and spiritual form (specialty snacks, traditional operas, handicrafts) ), conducting a study on the individual characteristics and overlapping characteristics of the image elements, revealing that the image elements of Zhangzhou ancient city need to coordinate with each other to ensure the integrity and distinctiveness of the ancient city's characteristics, promote the sustainable development of the ancient city's spatial form, and have an impact on the overall spatial system and human environment of the ancient city.
