Abstract:The open logic is defined by model theory which can be viewed as a process-based nonmonotonic logic. Some new notions and results of open logic are introduced. The relation of open logic to circumscription is studied, and the relationship between open logic and other nonmonotonic logics is pointed out as well.

Abstract:In this paper we firstly extend McCarthy’s circumscription to modal logics. Similar to circumscribing predicates, we circumscribe the critical modal operator (the operator to be minimized) in a formula. The modal formulation of circumscription is completely characterized by the minimal model such as the predicate circumscription. The circumscriptive ignorance of the agent’s self-knowledge by circumscribing knowledge operator is then illustrated. We further suggest that the merit of circumscription is basic for non-classical logics and for the procedure from monotonic logic to nonmonotonic one.

Abstract:In [15], paraconsistent circumscription is described by application of predicate circumscription in a paraconsistent logic, which is nonmonotonic and paraconsistent. In this paper, we first extend paraconsistent circumscription into first-order case by minimal semantics. Unfortunately, the circumscriptive schema is not available for paraconsistent logic. In order to obtain a satisfactory proof theory for paraconsistent circumscription, we then propose a minimal tableaux to arrive at the goal. The sound and complete theorems of the tableaux with respect to the semantics are provided.

Abstract:Paraconsistent circumscription LPc is a non-classical logic which has both nonmonotonicity and paraconsistency. It can be viewed as a formalism of commonsense reasoning with incomplete and inconsistent knowledge. The results of computational complexity on propositional LPc and its implementation algorithm are presented. It is showed that LPc is NP-complete. A linear algorithm to transform LPc into equivalent prior circumscription is provided. Because there are a number of useful algorithms for circumscription which could be implemented by resolution, a new way to the implementation of LPc is drawn.

Abstract:A modal nonmonotonic logic is presented based on an experiential modal semantics on typicality and exception. The syntactic and semantics of modal nonmonotonic logic are provided and the completeness theorem and the theorems relating it to major nonmonotonic logics are proved. It directly formalizes the intuition of nonmonotonic reasoning. Among other things, it provides us a first-order extension of default logic and autoepistemic logic, and simultaneously has the capability of circumscription to infer universal statement. It has important applications in logic programming and deductive data base. As a result, it provides a uniform basis for various nonmonotonic logics, from which the correspondent relationship among major nonmonotonic logics can coincide.

Abstract:We investigate the role of coalgebraic predicate logic, a logic for neighborhood frames first proposed by Chang, in the study of monotonic modal logics. We prove analogues of the Goldblatt-Thomason Theorem and Fine's Canonicity Theorem for classes of monotonic neighborhood frames closed under elementary equivalence in coalgebraic predicate logic. The elementary equivalence here can be relativized to the classes of monotonic, quasi-filter, augmented quasi-filter, filter, or augmented filter neighborhood frames, respectively. The original, Kripke-semantic versions of the theorems follow as a special case concerning the classes of augmented filter neighborhood frames.

Abstract:G. Priest introduced nonmonotonicity into a paraconsistent logic, so-called logic of paradox LP, that yields a solution to the weakness of paraconsistent logic. The resulting logic (of minimal parades) LPm is nonmonotonic in the sense that inconsistency is minimal. The problem of proof theory of logic LPm left open because the base logic LP is paraconsistent so that syntactic formulations of nonmonotonic logic are not available for LPm, though LPm is well characterized by minimal semantics. In this paper, we provide a minimal tableaus as a satisfactory proof theory for LPm . We first present a signed tableaux for LP. Then minimal tableaux for LPm is obtained by revising signed tableaux for LP to fit LPm in which the branches of non-minimally-inconsistent models of the tableaux are eliminated. The soundness and completeness theorems of the tableaux with respect to the semantics of LP and LPm are proved, respectively

Abstract:The development of non-monotonic logics has revitalized the question: "What is logic?" The school of abstract logic holds that logic deals with the validity of argument,which is completely abstracted from the context of the argument used,and is essentially deductive logic and monotonic;while the school of embedded logic insists that logic is the study of standards for good arguments in real life,therefore it is essentially non-monotonic. However,their answers do not distinguish good arguments from the logical point of view and good arguments from the rhetorical point of view.Non-formal logicians are trying to distinguish the functional ranges of demonstrative appraisal of logic and rhetoric.This paper first explores the relationship between the argument-as-product and argument-as-process;then it classifies the non-formal logic as formal-dialectical school and pragma-dialectical school;thirdly,it focuses on theoretical sources,basic characteristics and objects of non-formal logic,and finally it proposes the future directions of non-formal logic.

Abstract:We propose a four-valued logic with intuitive semantics by the connectives that is useful for understanding the contradictions in knowledge representation. The intuitive semantics reflects that any assertion has dual character by whose information for or against the judgment. The four-valued logic is weakly paraconsistent and has the weak consistency to capture whether or not the contradictions are reconcilable with information. The four-valued logic is a normal extension of classical logic in a sense that it contains the schemata of classical axioms. We then propose an axiomatization of the four-valued logic. The soundness and completeness of the axiomatization with respect to the semantics are proved. The usefulness of the four-valued logic is discussed.

Abstract:The logic of paradox LP proposed by Priest [1979] is one of paraconsistent logics. One of the motivations behind paraconsistent logic, namely LP, is that it should not be the case that everything follows from a single contradiction. It must pay a price, however, that some classical inferences would be invalid in LP. In Priest's recent invention, the logic of minimal paradox LPm can overcome the drawback, such that paraconsistent logic would be equivalent to classical logic when there is not direct effect of a contradiction. Although some proof theories for LP were introduced, there has not yet been a satisfactory proof theory for LPm. We will propose a sound and complete tableaux for LPm in this article.

Abstract:It is a general view that traditional logic is expressed in natural language and modern logic in formal one, which indicates that modern logic can not solve problems in natural language, while the traditional logic can. This is wrong. The primary difference between traditional logic and modern logic lies, on the surface, in their expressive forms, but in fact, in their syntax and semantics: the former is of the subject-predicate structure, while the latter of predicate structure. Abstract:Let $\mathcal{L}$ be a first-order two-sorted language and consider a class of $\mathcal{L}$-structures of the form $\langle M, X \rangle$ where $M$ varies among structures of the first sort, while $X$ is fixed in the second sort, and it is assumed to be a compact Hausdorff space. When $X$ is a compact subset of the real line, one way to treat classes of this kind model-theoretically is via continuous-valued logic, as in [Ben Yaacov-Berenstein-Henson-Usvyatsov 2010]. Prior to that, Henson and Iovino proposed an approach based on the notion of positive formulas [Henson-Iovino 2002]. Their work is tailored to the model theory of Banach spaces. Here we show that a similar approach is possible for a more general class of models. We introduce suitable versions of elementarity, compactness, saturation, quantifier elimination and other basic tools, and we develop basic model theory.

Abstract:Most non-classical logics are subclassical, that is, every inference/theorem they validate is also valid classically. A notable exception is the three-valued propositional Logic of Ordinary Discourse (OL) proposed and extensively motivated by W. S. Cooper as a more adequate candidate for formalizing everyday reasoning (in English). OL challenges classical logic not only by rejecting some theses, but also by accepting non-classically valid principles, such as so-called Aristotle's and Boethius' theses. Formally, OL shows a number of unusual features - it is non-structural, connexive, paraconsistent and contradictory - making it all the more interesting for the mathematical logician. We present our recent findings on OL and its structural companion (that we call sOL). We introduce Hilbert-style multiple-conclusion calculi for OL and sOL that are both modular and analytic, and easily allow us to obtain single-conclusion axiomatizations. We prove that sOL is algebraizable and single out its equivalent semantics, which turns out to be a discriminator variety generated by a three-element algebra. Having observed that sOL can express the connectives of other three-valued logics, we prove that it is definitionally equivalent to an expansion of the three-valued logic J3 of D'Ottaviano and da Costa, itself an axiomatic extension of paraconsistent Nelson logic.

Abstract:We further develop the algebraic approach to input/output logic initiated in \cite{wollic22}, where subordination algebras and a family of their generalizations were proposed as a semantic environment of various input/output logics. In particular: we extend the modal characterizations of a finite number of well known conditions on normative and permission systems, as well as on subordination, precontact, and dual precontact algebras developed in \cite{de2024obligations}, to those corresponding to the infinite class of {\em clopen-analytic inequalities} in a modal language consisting both of positive and of negative unary modal operators; we characterize the syntactic shape of first-order conditions on algebras endowed with subordination, precontact, and dual precontact relations which guarantees these conditions to be the first-order correspondents of axioms in the modal language above; we introduce algorithms for computing the first-order correspondents of modal axioms on algebras endowed with subordination, precontact, and dual precontact relations, and conversely, for computing the modal axioms of which the conditions satisfying the suitable syntactic shape are the first-order correspondents; finally, we extend Celani's dual characterization results between subordination lattices and subordination spaces to a wider environment which also encompasses precontact and dual precontact relations, and relative to an infinite class of first order conditions relating subordination, precontact and dual precontact relations on distributive lattices. The modal characterizations established in the present paper pave the way to establishing faithful embeddings for infinite classes of input/output logics, and hence to their implementation in LogiKEy, Isabelle/HOL, Lean, or other interactive systems.
