Abstract:Abstract In this paper, we introduce a logic based on team semantics, called $\mathbf {FOT} $ , whose expressive power is elementary, i.e., coincides with first-order logic both on the level of sentences and (possibly open) formulas, and we also show that a sublogic of $\mathbf {FOT} $ , called $\mathbf {FOT}^{\downarrow } $ , captures exactly downward closed elementary (or first-order) team properties. We axiomatize completely the logic $\mathbf {FOT} $ , and also extend the known partial axiomatization of dependence logic to dependence logic enriched with the logical constants in $\mathbf {FOT}^{\downarrow } $ .

Abstract:The relationship between the complexity class \$\\mathrm{AC}^0\$ and first-order logic transfers to the parameterized class \$\\mathrm {para}\\text {-}\\mathrm{AC}^0\$, the parameterized analogue of \$\\mathrm{AC}^0\$. In the last years this relationship has turned out to be very fruitful. In this paper we survey some of the results obtained, mainly applications of logic to complexity theory. However the last section presents a strict hierarchy theorem for first-order logic obtained by a result of complexity theory.

Abstract:By limiting the range of the predicate variables in a second-order language one may obtain restricted versions of second-order logic such as weak second-order logic or definable subset logic. In this note we provide an infinitary strongly complete axiomatization for several systems of this kind having the range of the predicate variables as a parameter. The completeness argument uses simple techniques from the theory of Boolean algebras.

Abstract:Abstraction logic is a new logic, serving as a foundation of mathematics. It combines features of both predicate logic and higher-order logic: abstraction logic can be viewed both as higher-order logic minus static types as well as predicate logic plus operators and variable binding. We argue that abstraction logic is the best foundational logic possible because it maximises both simplicity and practical expressivity. This argument is supported by the observation that abstraction logic has simpler terms and a simpler notion of proof than all other general logics. At the same time, abstraction logic can formalise both intuitionistic and classical abstraction logic, and is sound and complete for these logics and all other logics extending deduction logic with equality.

Abstract:Parametricity is a key metatheoretic property of type systems, which implies strong uniformity & modularity properties of the structure of types within systems possessing it. In recent years, various systems of dependent type theory have emerged with the aim of expressing such parametric reasoning in their internal logic, toward the end of solving various problems arising from the complexity of higher-dimensional coherence conditions in type theory. This paper presents a first step toward the unification, simplification, and extension of these various methods for internalizing parametricity. Specifically, I argue that there is an essentially modal aspect of parametricity, which is intimately connected with the category-theoretic concept of cohesion. On this basis, I describe a general categorical semantics for modal parametricity, develop a corresponding framework of axioms (with computational interpretations) in dependent type theory that can be used to internally represent and reason about such parametricity, and show this in practice by implementing these axioms in Agda and using them to verify parametricity theorems therein. I then demonstrate the utility of these axioms in managing the complexity of higher-dimensional coherence by deriving induction principles for higher inductive types, and in closing, I sketch the outlines of a more general synthetic theory of parametricity, with applications in domains ranging from homotopy type theory to the analysis of program modules.

Polynomial Lawvere Logic

Abstract:We study Polynomial Lawvere logic PL, a logic defined over the Lawvere quantale of extended positive reals with sum as tensor, to which we add multiplication, thereby obtaining a semiring structure. PL is designed for complex quantitative reasoning, allowing judgements that express inequalities between polynomials on the extended positive reals. We introduce a deduction system and demonstrate its expressiveness by deriving a classical result from probability theory relating the Kantorovich and the total variation distances. Although the deductive system is not complete in general, we achieve completeness for finitely axiomatizable theories. The proof of completeness relies on the Krivine-Stengle Positivstellensatz (a variant of Hilbert's Nullstellensatz). Additionally, we provide new complexity results, both for PL and its affine fragment AL, regarding two decision problems: satisfiability of a set of judgements and semantical consequence from a set of judgements. The former is NP-complete in AL and in PSPACE for PL; the latter is co-NP complete in PL and in PSPACE for PL.

Abstract:The LP (logic of paradox) is a paraconsistent logic. One of the motivations behind paraconsistent logic, namely LP, is that is should not allow that everything follows from a single contradiction. However it has one important drawback: that some classical inferences would be invalid in LP. The LPm (logic of minimal paradox) can overcome this drawback, such that paraconsistent logic would be equivalent to classical logic when there was not direct effect of a contradiction. Originally, LP and LPm were only defined in semantic. Although some proof theories for LP were introduced, it has left open how to obtain a satisfactory proof theory for LPm. This paper propose the sound and completes tableaux with respect to the semantics of LP and LPm, respectively.
Paraconsistent and Paracomplete Zermelo-Fraenkel Set Theory

Abstract:We present a novel treatment of set theory in a four-valued paraconsistent and paracomplete logic, i.e., a logic in which propositions can be both true and false, and neither true nor false. Our approach is a significant departure from previous research in paraconsistent set theory, which has almost exclusively been motivated by a desire to avoid Russell's paradox and fulfil naive comprehension. Instead, we prioritise setting up a system with a clear ontology of non-classical sets, which can be used to reason informally about incomplete and inconsistent phenomena, and is sufficiently similar to ZFC to enable the development of interesting mathematics. We propose an axiomatic system BZFC, obtained by analysing the ZFC-axioms and translating them to a four-valued setting in a careful manner, avoiding many of the obstacles encountered by other attempted formalizations. We introduce the anti-classicality axiom postulating the existence of non-classical sets, and prove a surprising results stating that the existence of a single non-classical set is sufficient to produce any other type of non-classical set. Our theory is naturally bi-interpretable with ZFC, and provides a philosophically satisfying view in which non-classical sets can be seen as a natural extension of classical ones, in a similar way to the non-well-founded sets of Peter Aczel. Finally, we provide an interesting application concerning Tarski semantics, showing that the classical definition of the satisfaction relation yields a logic precisely reflecting the non-classicality in the meta-theory.

Abstract:Logic rules and inference are fundamental in computer science and have been studied extensively. However, prior semantics of logic languages can have subtle implications and can disagree significantly, on even very simple programs, including in attempting to solve the well-known Russell's paradox. These semantics are often non-intuitive and hard-to-understand when unrestricted negation is used in recursion. This paper describes a simple new semantics for logic rules, founded semantics, and its straightforward extension to another simple new semantics, constraint semantics, that unify the core of different prior semantics. The new semantics support unrestricted negation, as well as unrestricted existential and universal quantifications. They are uniquely expressive and intuitive by allowing assumptions about the predicates, rules, and reasoning to be specified explicitly, as simple and precise binary choices. They are completely declarative and relate cleanly to prior semantics. In addition, founded semantics can be computed in linear time in the size of the ground program.

Propositional Logics for the Lawvere Quantale

Abstract:Lawvere showed that generalised metric spaces are categories enriched over $[0, \infty]$, the quantale of the positive extended reals. The statement of enrichment is a quantitative analogue of being a preorder. Towards seeking a logic for quantitative metric reasoning, we investigate three $[0,\infty]$-valued propositional logics over the Lawvere quantale. The basic logical connectives shared by all three logics are those that can be interpreted in any quantale, viz finite conjunctions and disjunctions, tensor (addition for the Lawvere quantale) and linear implication (here a truncated subtraction); to these we add, in turn, the constant $1$ to express integer values, and scalar multiplication by a non-negative real to express general affine combinations. Quantitative equational logic can be interpreted in the third logic if we allow inference systems instead of axiomatic systems. For each of these logics we develop a natural deduction system which we prove to be decidably complete w.r.t. the quantale-valued semantics. The heart of the completeness proof makes use of the Motzkin transposition theorem. Consistency is also decidable; the proof makes use of Fourier-Motzkin elimination of linear inequalities. Strong completeness does not hold in general, even (as is known) for theories over finitely-many propositional variables; indeed even an approximate form of strong completeness in the sense of Pavelka or Ben Yaacov -- provability up to arbitrary precision -- does not hold. However, we can show it for theories axiomatized by a (not necessarily finite) set of judgements in normal form over a finite set of propositional variables when we restrict to models that do not map variables to $\infty$; the proof uses Hurwicz's general form of the Farkas' Lemma.

Abstract:Starting from a general dynamic analysis of reasoning and programming, we develop two main dynamic perspectives upon logic programming. First, the standard fixed point semantics for Horn clause programs naturally supports imperative programming styles. Next, we provide axiomatizations for Prolog-type inference engines using calculi of sequents employing modified versions of standard structural rules such as monotonicity or permutation. Finally, we discuss the implications of all this for a broader enterprise of ‘abstract proof theory’.

Abstract:G. Priest introduced nonmonotonicity into a paraconsistent logic, so-called logic of paradox LP, that yields a solution to the weakness of paraconsistent logic. The resulting logic (of minimal parades) LPm is nonmonotonic in the sense that inconsistency is minimal. The problem of proof theory of logic LPm left open because the base logic LP is paraconsistent so that syntactic formulations of nonmonotonic logic are not available for LPm, though LPm is well characterized by minimal semantics. In this paper, we provide a minimal tableaus as a satisfactory proof theory for LPm . We first present a signed tableaux for LP. Then minimal tableaux for LPm is obtained by revising signed tableaux for LP to fit LPm in which the branches of non-minimally-inconsistent models of the tableaux are eliminated. The soundness and completeness theorems of the tableaux with respect to the semantics of LP and LPm are proved, respectively

Foundations of logic programming in hybrid-dynamic quantum logic

Abstract:The main contribution of the present paper is the introduction of a simple yet expressive hybrid-dynamic logic for describing quantum programs. This version of quantum logic can express quantum measurements and unitary evolutions of states in a natural way based on concepts advanced in (hybrid and dynamic) modal logics. We then study Horn clauses in the hybrid-dynamic quantum logic proposed, and develop a series of results that lead to an initial semantics theorem for sets of clauses that are satisfiable. This shows that a significant fragment of hybrid-dynamic quantum logic has good computational properties, and can serve as a basis for defining executable languages for specifying quantum programs. We set the foundations of logic programming in this fragment by proving a variant of Herbrand's theorem, which reduces the semantic entailment of a logic-programming query by a program to the search of a suitable substitution.

Theory and Practice of Logic Programming

Abstract:Abstract Several formal systems, such as resolution and minimal model semantics, provide a framework for logic programming. In this article, we will survey the use of structural proof theory as an alternative foundation. Researchers have been using this foundation for the past 35 years to elevate logic programming from its roots in first-order classical logic into higher-order versions of intuitionistic and linear logic. These more expressive logic programming languages allow for capturing stateful computations and rich forms of abstractions, including higher-order programming, modularity, and abstract data types. Term-level bindings are another kind of abstraction, and these are given an elegant and direct treatment within both proof theory and these extended logic programming languages. Logic programming has also inspired new results in proof theory, such as those involving polarity and focused proofs. These recent results provide a high-level means for presenting the differences between forward-chaining and backward-chaining style inferences. Anchoring logic programming in proof theory has also helped identify its connections and differences with functional programming, deductive databases, and model checking.

Abstract:Paracomplete logic P1 is a logic system allowing a proposition and its negation to be false at the same time, i.e., the general law of excluded middle in this logic system would be futile. Based on the standard grammar and syntax, this paper explains the logic implication of paracomplete negation, an?alyzes the logic syntactic characteristics, testifies the decidability of paracomplete logic quasi matrix with specific lining method, demonstrates the futility of general law of excluded middle in P 1 with quasi matrix method, analyzes the logic mechanism of paracomplete logic P 1 ’ s tolerance on logic paradox, and thus compares paraconsistent logic C1 and P1 on their tolerant ability.

Abstract:We present a novel approach to construction of a formal semantics for a programming language. Our approach, using a parametric denotational semantics, allows the semantics to be easily extended to support new language features, and abstracted to define program analyses. We apply this in analysing a duck-typed, reflective, curried dynamic language. The benefits of this approach include its terseness and modularity, and the ease with which one can gradually build language features and analyses on top of a previous incarnation of a semantics.

Abstract:Disjunctive Logic Programming (\DLP) is an advanced formalism for Knowledge Representation and Reasoning (KRR). \DLP is very expressive in a precise mathematical sense: it allows to express every property of finite structures that is decidable in the complexity class $\SigmaP{2}$ ($\NP^{\NP}$). Importantly, the \DLP encodings are often simple and natural. In this paper, we single out some limitations of \DLP for KRR, which cannot naturally express problems where the size of the disjunction is not known ``a priori'' (like N-Coloring), but it is part of the input. To overcome these limitations, we further enhance the knowledge modelling abilities of \DLP, by extending this language by {\em Parametric Connectives (OR and AND)}. These connectives allow us to represent compactly the disjunction/conjunction of a set of atoms having a given property. We formally define the semantics of the new language, named $DLP^{\bigvee,\bigwedge}$ and we show the usefulness of the new constructs on relevant knowledge-based problems. We address implementation issues and discuss related works.

Abstract:Logic has pride of place in mathematics and its 20th century offshoot, computer science. Modern symbolic logic was developed, in part, as a way to provide a formal framework for mathematics: Frege, Peano, Whitehead and Russell, as well as Hilbert developed systems of logic to formalize mathematics. These systems were meant to serve either as themselves foundational, or at least as formal analogs of mathematical reasoning amenable to mathematical study, e.g., in Hilbert's consistency program. Similar efforts continue, but have been expanded by the development of sophisticated methods to study the properties of such systems using proof and model theory. In parallel with this evolution of logical formalisms as tools for articulating mathematical theories (broadly speaking), much progress has been made in the quest for a mechanization of logical inference and the investigation of its theoretical limits, culminating recently in the development of new foundational frameworks for mathematics with sophisticated computer-assisted proof systems. In addition, logical formalisms developed by logicians in mathematical and philosophical contexts have proved immensely useful in describing theories and systems of interest to computer scientists, and to some degree, vice versa. Three examples of the influence of logic in computer science are automated reasoning, computer verification, and type systems for programming languages.
