Abstract:The theory of mental models and its computer implementations have led to crucial experiments showing that no standard logic—the sentential calculus and all logics that include it—can underlie human reasoning. The theory replaces the logical concept of validity (the conclusion is true in all cases in which the premises are true) with necessity (conclusions describe no more than possibilities to which the premises refer). Many inferences are both necessary and valid. But experiments show that individuals make necessary inferences that are invalid, e.g., Few people ate steak or sole ; therefore, few people ate steak . Other crucial experiments show that individuals reject inferences that are not necessary but valid, e.g., He had the anesthetic or felt pain, but not both ; therefore, he had the anesthetic or felt pain, or both . Nothing in logic can justify the rejection of a valid inference: a denial of its conclusion is inconsistent with its premises, and inconsistencies yield valid inferences of any conclusions whatsoever including the one denied. So inconsistencies are catastrophic in logic. In contrast, the model theory treats all inferences as defeasible (nonmonotonic), and inconsistencies have the null model, which yields only the null model in conjunction with any other premises. So inconsistences are local. Which allows truth values in natural languages to be much richer than those that occur in the semantics of standard logics; and individuals verify assertions on the basis of both facts and possibilities that did not occur.

Abstract:This is a reflection on the author's experience in teaching logic at the graduate level in a computer science department. The main lesson is that model building and the process of modelling must be placed at the centre stage of logic teaching. Furthermore, effective use must be supported with adequate tools. Finally, logic is the methodology underlying many applications, it is hence paramount to pass on its principles, methods and concepts to computer science audiences.

Abstract:In the literature, essence is formalized in two different ways, either de dicto, or de re. Following \cite{Marcos:2005}, we adopt its de dicto formalization: a formula is essential, if once it is true, it is necessarily true; otherwise, it is accidental. In this article, we study the model theory and axiomatization of the logic of essence and accident, i.e. the logic with essence operator (or accident operator) as the only primitive modality. We show that the logic of essence and accident is less expressive than modal logic on non-reflexive models, but the two logics are equally expressive on reflexive models. We prove that some frame properties are undefinable in the logic of essence and accident, while some are. We propose the suitable bisimulation for this logic, based on which we characterize the expressive power of this logic within modal logic and within first-order logic. We axiomatize this logic over various frame classes, among which the symmetric case is missing, and our method is more suitable than those in the literature. We also find a method to compute certain axioms used to axiomatize this logic over special frames in the literature. As a side effect, we answer some open questions raised in \cite{Marcos:2005}.

Abstract:As the core of Aristotle's logic is such a sentence as S P, and that of his metaphysics is being itself, logic and metaphysics are interlinked, in which the relation between be and true is of vital importance. The key concept in modern logical semantics is true, in linguistic philosophy as well, so logic semantics and linguistic philosophy are also interlinked. Different results stem from different logical methods used, but the close relation between logic and metaphysics can, thus, demonstrated. The relation between logic and metaphysics, or that between logic and philosophy plays a pivotal role in understanding western philosophy.

Toward Conceptual Modeling for Propositional Logic: Propositions as Events

Abstract:Applying logic in the area of conceptual modeling has been investigated widely, yet there has been limited uptake of logic-based conceptual modeling in industry. According to some researchers, another formalization of such tools as EER or UML class diagrams in logic may only marginally contribute to the body of knowledge. This paper reflects on applying propositional logic language to a high-level diagrammatic representation called the thinging machines (TM) model. We explore the relationship between conceptual modeling and logic, including such issues as: What logical constructs model? How does truth fit into the picture produced in conceptual modeling as a representation of some piece of the world it is about? The ultimate research objective is a quest for a thorough semantic alignment of TM modeling and propositional logic into a single structure. Examples that involve the application of propositional logic in certain areas of reality are TM remodeled, where propositions are viewed as TM regions or events. As it turned out, TM seems to shed light on the semantics of propositions. In such a conceptual framework, logical truth is a matter of how things are in actuality and how falsehood is in subsistence. The results show that propositional logic enriches the rigorousness of conceptual descriptions and that the TM semantic apparatus complements propositional logic by providing a background to the given set of propositions. Semantics matters are applied to propositional constructs such as negative propositions, disjunctions, and conjunctions with negative terms.

Abstract:As a development of classical nonmonotonic logic,argumentation logic(also called abstract argumentation theory,and formal argumentation,etc.) provides a general mechanism to handle the problems of inconsistency in various situations.It captures the common properties of various reasoning systems in a context of disagreement by using abstract arguments and attack relations,and defines the acceptability of arguments by establishing general evaluation criteria(called argumentation semantics).This makes argumentation logic generally applicable to various situations.First,since the evaluation of the status of arguments is only related to the attack relations among them,the types,origins,representation languages and methods,of underlying knowledge,are allowed to be diverse.Second,the evaluation criteria corresponding to certain argumentation semantics are suitable to various applications.Third,argumentation logic not only supports the epistemic reasoning and the practical reasoning of individual agents,but also supports the reasoning in the process of multiagent interaction(e.g.,persuasion,disputation,negotiation,etc).Currently,the emphasis of the research of argumentation logic is on the definitions and computational methods of argumentation semantics,the instantiation approaches of argumentation semantics,and the applications of argumentation semantics,etc.

Abstract:It is a general view that traditional logic is expressed in natural language and modern logic in formal one, which indicates that modern logic can not solve problems in natural language, while the traditional logic can. This is wrong. The primary difference between traditional logic and modern logic lies, on the surface, in their expressive forms, but in fact, in their syntax and semantics: the former is of the subject-predicate structure, while the latter of predicate structure. As a result, modern logic provides interpretations for natural language different from and better than that of traditional logic.

Abstract:This chapter introduces modal logic as a tool for talking about graphs, or to use more traditional terminology, as a tool for talking about Kripke models and frames. We want the reader to gain an intuitive appreciation of this perspective, and a firm grasp of the key technical ideas (such as bisimulations) which underly it. We introduce the syntax and semantics of basic modal logic, discuss its expressivity at the level of models, examine its computational properties, and then consider what it can say at the level of frames. We then move beyond the basic modal language, examine the kinds of expressivity offered by a number of richer modal logics, and try to pin down what it is that makes them all 'modal'. We conclude by discussing an example which brings many of the ideas we discuss into play: games.

Abstract:Logic has pride of place in mathematics and its 20th century offshoot, computer science. Modern symbolic logic was developed, in part, as a way to provide a formal framework for mathematics: Frege, Peano, Whitehead and Russell, as well as Hilbert developed systems of logic to formalize mathematics. These systems were meant to serve either as themselves foundational, or at least as formal analogs of mathematical reasoning amenable to mathematical study, e.g., in Hilbert's consistency program. Similar efforts continue, but have been expanded by the development of sophisticated methods to study the properties of such systems using proof and model theory. In parallel with this evolution of logical formalisms as tools for articulating mathematical theories (broadly speaking), much progress has been made in the quest for a mechanization of logical inference and the investigation of its theoretical limits, culminating recently in the development of new foundational frameworks for mathematics with sophisticated computer-assisted proof systems. In addition, logical formalisms developed by logicians in mathematical and philosophical contexts have proved immensely useful in describing theories and systems of interest to computer scientists, and to some degree, vice versa. Three examples of the influence of logic in computer science are automated reasoning, computer verification, and type systems for programming languages.

Abstract:In the early days of natural language semantics, Donald Davidson issued a challenge to those, like Richard Montague, who would do semantics in a model-theoretic framework that gives a central role to a model-relative notion of truth. Davidson argued that no theory of this kind can claim to be an account of real truth conditions unless it first makes clear how the relativized notion relates to our ordinary non-relativized notion of truth. In the 1990s, Davidson's challenge was developed by Etchemendy into an argument against the model-theoretic account of logical consequence, one that also threatens the attempt to capture natural language entailment relations in modeltheoretic terms—one of the central desiderata of semantics. Nevertheless, the modeltheoretic framework has flourished within natural language semantics. But it has flourished without any consensus among semanticists as to how to answer Davidson's challenge. The aim of this essay is to develop an answer. I argue that model-theoretic semantics is best understood as model-based science: a semantics for a natural language is a scientific model of truth conditions. This makes good sense of the way model-theoretic tools are used in natural language semantics. And it allows us to answer Davidson's challenge by showing how a theory that employs a relativized notion of truth manages to tell us about ordinary truth conditions. Moreover, I argue that it helps us see how semantics can provide genuine explanations for natural language entailment and other truth-conditional phenomena.

Boethius and Ancient Logic

Abstract:Boethius was the most important philosopher during the development from ancient logic to medieval logic. He planned to put into Latin every work of Aristotle and all the dialogues of Plato, but only translated Aristotle' s Organon for he found later much essential contradiction between the two greatest authorities and that translating all of the works would unavoidably show their divergences to the Latin Romans. Boethius' translations and commentaries were the only bibliographies for the Latin scholars to study ancient logic before the 12th century. The nature of the universe is always the fundamental issue of logic and philosophy. The study of it was enhanced by Porphyry with his three famous questions, but he made no conclusions to them. Boethius' research into it was to resolve Porphyry' s questions and settle the controversies about the relation between logic and philosophy. He believed that genus or species is made sensible when in individual things, when it is in universals it is made intelligible; and in the same way when it is sensible, it remains in individuals, when it is understood, it is made universal; therefore they subsist in the sensible, but they are understood without bodies. This answer was Boethius' marked contribution to logic. However, it induced medieval philosophers to divide into two parts: Nominalists and Realists. Boethius also criticized Porphyry for considering logic as the tool of philosophy. He believed that logic is both the instrument and a part of philosophy. This assertion had an inestimable influence on the development of logic. Proposition logic is the most brilliant part of Boethian logic. He tried to define the hypothetical (or conditional) proposition in the Megara-Stoic tradition. Hypothetical proposition can be formed in two ways, accidentally, or so as to have some natural consequence. Accidentally in this way, as when we say 'when fire is hot, the sky is round' . It means that a hypothetical proposition is true if and only if when its antecedent is true and its consequent cannot be false. It is equivalent to the material implication of modern logic. As to the propositions which have within them a natural consequence, we might say ' when man is, animal is' . That is, the antecedent of a hypothetical proposition necessarily implies its consequent. It can be interpreted as modern strict implication. Moreover, Boethius listed 38 hypothetical syllogisms through which he re-established the due position of proposition logic in the whole logic theories after Stoics. Boethian logic was the main source of medieval logic.

Abstract: Uncertain logic is a generalization of mathematical logic for dealing with uncertain knowledge via uncertainty theory. The first model is uncertain propositional logic designed by Li and Liu [96] in which the truth value of an uncertain proposition is defined as the uncertain measure that the proposition is true. An important contribution is the truth value theorem by Chen and Ralescu [18] that provides a numerical method for calculating the truth value of uncertain formulas. The second model is uncertain predicate logic proposed by Zhang and Peng [227] in which an uncertain predicate proposition is defined as a sequence of uncertain propositions indexed by one or more parameters. One advantage of uncertain logic is the well consistency with classical logic. For example, uncertain logic obeys the law of truth conservation and is consistent with the law of excluded middle and the law of contradiction. This chapter will introduce uncertain propositional logic and uncertain predicate logic.

Abstract:This article discusses the logical errors in the liar paradox, Gödel's incompleteness theorems, Russell's paradox, and the halting problem. In order to avoid these errors, a redefinition of logic has been presented, which is concluded as four principles in set-theoretic language, including 1. Don't talk about empty; 2. Elements of set should have identity; 3. Sets should have definitions; and 4. A total set should be defined. The new definition of logic can eliminate all paradoxes and invalid statements, thus becoming a solid foundation for human language and knowledge.

Abstract:The logic which has been used to construct the paradoxes by Zeno is the dialectic,and is the predecessor of the formal logic.From the fundamental of metaphysics(ontology) that what can be thought is that can be,Zeno has thought that contradiction is impossible logically and thereby created the ″antinomy″ of sensibility and reason.Zeno′s Paradoxes have been built on the basis of this ″antinomy″.And this ″antinomy″ is the major root of the formation of Zeno′s Paradoxes.The logic as thought science has been extrapolated to the whole universe and the intellectuality thinking has been extrapolated to rational thinking by Zeno.Logical contradiction has been identified with dialectical contradiction,and further,dialectical contradiction has been canceled.Accordingly,reason has been used to refute sensibility and the existences of the contradictions and motions of things.

Abstract:In this paper we investigate the existence of model-equivalence reduction between NP-logic systems which are logic systems with model existence problem in NP. It is shown that among all NP-systems with model checking problem in NP, the existentially quantified propositional logic (\exists PF) is maximal with respect to poly-time model-equivalent reduction. However, \exists PF seems not a maximal NP-system in general because there exits a NP-system with model checking problem D^P-complete.
