Abstract:We introduce a logic of knowledge in a framework in which knowledge is treated as a kind of belief. The framework is based on a standard KD45 characterization of belief, and the characterization of knowledge undergoes the classical tripartite analysis that knowledge is justified true belief, which has a natural link to the studies of logics of evidence and justification. The interpretation of knowledge avoids the unwanted properties of logical omniscience, independent of the choice of the base logic of belief. We axiomatize the logic, prove its soundness and completeness and study the computational complexity results of the model checking and satisfiability problems. We extend the logic to a multi-agent setting and introduce a variant in which belief is characterized in a weaker system to avoid the problem of logical omniscience.

Abstract:As a development of classical nonmonotonic logic,argumentation logic(also called abstract argumentation theory,and formal argumentation,etc.) provides a general mechanism to handle the problems of inconsistency in various situations.It captures the common properties of various reasoning systems in a context of disagreement by using abstract arguments and attack relations,and defines the acceptability of arguments by establishing general evaluation criteria(called argumentation semantics).This makes argumentation logic generally applicable to various situations.First,since the evaluation of the status of arguments is only related to the attack relations among them,the types,origins,representation languages and methods,of underlying knowledge,are allowed to be diverse.Second,the evaluation criteria corresponding to certain argumentation semantics are suitable to various applications.Third,argumentation logic not only supports the epistemic reasoning and the practical reasoning of individual agents,but also supports the reasoning in the process of multiagent interaction(e.g.,persuasion,disputation,negotiation,etc).Currently,the emphasis of the research of argumentation logic is on the definitions and computational methods of argumentation semantics,the instantiation approaches of argumentation semantics,and the applications of argumentation semantics,etc.

Abstract:Currently, little attention has been paid to the agent architecture that allows rules (including non-ground rules) to be inserted into or deleted from the agents’ knowledge base at run-time. Meanwhile, it is unclear that how the theories for reasoning and decision-making are generated and updated in accordance with a set of changing rules, and how agents deliberate according to the dynamic theories. In this paper, we introduce a flexible agent based on the language of defeasible logic and the formalism of argumentation. The architecture of flexible agent is similar to BDI (beliefs-desires-intentions), but the knowledge for decision-making (a set of non-ground rules) is allowed to be changed at run-time, and the reasoning process is non-monotonic. After presenting the architecture of flexible agent, we show how the theories for agent reasoning are represented, generated and updated. Then, an argumentation-based deliberation method with dynamic theories is put forward. Different from the process of argument construction in the existing argumentation theories, the one in flexible agent is non-monotonic, i.e., the arguments and the defeat relations among them can be updated (added or subtracted) with the variation of theories. We show that this novel agent is both autonomous and flexible, so it is adaptable to the open and dynamic environment where the observations and the external business requirements are changeable.

Abstract:A new generation of artificial intelligence (NGAI), currently based on big data and machine learning, follows a path of connectionism. Although this path achieves huge success in data-intensive applications under closed environments, there are some bottleneck problems, including a lack of explainability, the difficulty of ethical alignment, the weakness of cognitive reasoning, etc. To address these problems inevitably involves the depiction of information from an open, dynamic and real environment and the modeling of human reasoning and explanation mechanisms. Formal argumentation is a general formalism for modeling various types of knowledge representation and reasoning in a context of disagreement, and is flexible enough to incorporate other types of knowledge for decisionmaking, such as preferences, weights, and probabilities. Meanwhile, there are various approaches for efficient computation of argumentation semantics by exploiting the locality and modularity of argumentation, and for providing explanations based on arguments and dialogues. The organic combination of formal argumentation with existing big data and machine learning techniques can be expected to break through some existing technical bottlenecks and facilitate the sustainable development of NGAI.

Abstract:Abstract A ‘logical system’ is a complex architecture for analysing one or more styles of reasoning. This paper approaches this notion by example, focussing on current ‘dynamic’ conceptions of logic, as being concerned both with declarative propositions and with cognitive procedures of update, revision, etc. The semantic model proposed for this purpose is a general dynamic logic (inspired by dynamic logic in computer science). We show how this architecture leads to (1) new perspectives on logical constants (essentially, these become invariants in an infinite hierarchy of process simulations), (2) notions of inference (which may be classified via sets of structural rules and corresponding representation theorems) as well as (3) a systematic study of switching mechanisms between static and dynamic levels, effecting a flow of information between short-term and long-term reasoning.
Can LLMs Reason with Rules? Logic Scaffolding for Stress-Testing and Improving LLMs

Abstract:Large language models (LLMs) have achieved impressive human-like performance across various reasoning tasks. However, their mastery of underlying inferential rules still falls short of human capabilities. To investigate this, we propose a logic scaffolding inferential rule generation framework, to construct an inferential rule base, ULogic, comprising both primitive and compositional rules across five domains. Our analysis of GPT-series models over a rule subset reveals significant gaps in LLMs' logic understanding compared to human performance, especially in compositional and structural complex rules with certain bias patterns. We further distill these rules into a smaller-scale inference engine for flexible rule generation and enhancing downstream reasoning. Through a multi-judger evaluation, our inference engine proves effective in generating accurate, complex and abstract conclusions and premises, and improve various commonsense reasoning tasks. Overall, our work sheds light on LLMs' limitations in grasping inferential rule and suggests ways to enhance their logical reasoning abilities~\footnote{Code and data are available at \url{<a class="link-external link-https" href="https://github.com/SiyuanWangw/ULogic" rel="external noopener nofollow">this https URL</a>}.}.

Abstract:Chain-of-Thought (CoT) prompting has emerged as a pivotal technique for augmenting the inferential capabilities of language models during reasoning tasks. Despite its advancements, CoT often grapples with challenges in validating reasoning validity and ensuring informativeness. Addressing these limitations, this paper introduces the Logic Agent (LA), an agent-based framework aimed at enhancing the validity of reasoning processes in Large Language Models (LLMs) through strategic logic rule invocation. Unlike conventional approaches, LA transforms LLMs into logic agents that dynamically apply propositional logic rules, initiating the reasoning process by converting natural language inputs into structured logic forms. The logic agent leverages a comprehensive set of predefined functions to systematically navigate the reasoning process. This methodology not only promotes the structured and coherent generation of reasoning constructs but also significantly improves their interpretability and logical coherence. Through extensive experimentation, we demonstrate LA's capacity to scale effectively across various model sizes, markedly improving the precision of complex reasoning across diverse tasks.

Abstract:Logic rules and inference are fundamental in computer science and have been studied extensively. However, prior semantics of logic languages can have subtle implications and can disagree significantly, on even very simple programs, including in attempting to solve the well-known Russell's paradox. These semantics are often non-intuitive and hard-to-understand when unrestricted negation is used in recursion. This paper describes a simple new semantics for logic rules, founded semantics, and its straightforward extension to another simple new semantics, constraint semantics, that unify the core of different prior semantics. The new semantics support unrestricted negation, as well as unrestricted existential and universal quantifications. They are uniquely expressive and intuitive by allowing assumptions about the predicates, rules, and reasoning to be specified explicitly, as simple and precise binary choices. They are completely declarative and relate cleanly to prior semantics. In addition, founded semantics can be computed in linear time in the size of the ground program.

Abstract:In many situations humans have to reason with inconsistent knowledge. These inconsistencies may occur due to not fully reliable sources of information. In order to reason with inconsistent knowledge, it is not possible to view a set of premisses as absolute truths as is done in predicate logic. Viewing the set of premisses as a set of assumptions, however, it is possible to deduce useful conclusions from an inconsistent set of premisses. In this paper a logic for reasoning with inconsistent knowledge is described. This logic is a generalization of the work of N. Rescher [15]. In the logic a reliability relation is used to choose between incompatible assumptions. These choices are only made when a contradiction is derived. As long as no contradiction is derived, the knowledge is assumed to be consistent. This makes it possible to define an argumentation-based deduction process for the logic. For the logic a semantics based on the ideas of Y. Shoham [22, 23], is defined. It turns out that the semantics for the logic is a preferential semantics according to the definition S. Kraus, D. Lehmann and M. Magidor [12]. Therefore the logic is a logic of system P and possesses all the properties of an ideal non-monotonic logic.

Abstract:Statements convey information, by modifying knowledge states of hearers and speakers. This dynamic aspect of communication goes beyond the usual role of logic as a provider of static ‘truth conditions’. But it can be modelled rather nicely in so-called ‘update logics’, which have been developed since the 1980s. These systems provide a fresh look at standard logic, letting the usual models undergo suitable changes as agents absorb the content of successive utterances or messages. This lecture is a brief Whig history of update logics, with an emphasis on many-agent epistemic languages. We discuss straight update, questions and answers, and the delightful complexities of communication under various constraints. We hope to convey the attraction of giving a dynamic twist to wellknown things, such as simple modal models, or basic epistemic formulas.

Abstract:'Logic' is a growing and changing concept.Logic is concerned with human thinking;it refines the prescriptions of how human beings should think from the descriptions of how human beings actually think.Because of the development of human thinking and the change of human's wants in cognition and practice,logical studies of different historical periods usually show important difference in their subject matters,emphases,methodologies and results,and then the varieties of logical theories have been multiplied.In the push of computer science and artificial intelligence research,contemporary logic becomes to focus on the investigation of how human actually think on different concrete topics,and brings itself some new characteristics,e.g.the direct and obvious description of actual process of thinking,the complexity of logical techniques,the uncertainty of the conclusions of inference,and the pursue of the applicability of the resulting theories,and so on.We can't take the dominant approach of a historical period to be absolutely or uniquely correct one,and use it to judge all the research of our historical predecessors and contemporary colleagues.We should never forget the slogan that 'independence in spirit,freedom in thinking' which is the soul of academic research,and never forget to put it into practice in our logical studies.We should maintain academic standards and protect academic freedom at the same time.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a logical framework extending the standard epistemic logic with a new knowledge operator Open image in new window which captures the knowledge about (physically) necessary facts, e.g., scientific knowledge. Semantically, the truth of Open image in new window depends on not only the epistemically indistinguishable worlds from the current real world but also the relevant (physically) possible worlds which are clearly distinguishable. Essentially, Open image in new window is a bundle of the standard epistemic modality and a necessity-like modality. We axiomatize the corresponding epistemic logic completely in single- and multi-agent cases with interesting interaction axioms between the two epistemic operators.

Abstract:This paper presents a language, Alda, that supports all of logic rules, sets, functions, updates, and objects as seamlessly integrated built-ins. The key idea is to support predicates in rules as set-valued variables that can be used and updated in any scope, and support queries using rules as either explicit or implicit automatic calls to an inference function. We have defined a formal semantics of the language, implemented a prototype compiler that builds on an object-oriented language that supports concurrent and distributed programming and on an efficient logic rule system, and successfully used the language and implementation on benchmarks and problems from a wide variety of application domains. We describe the compilation method and results of experimental evaluation.

Abstract:In this paper, we present an alternative interpretation of propositional inquisitive logic as an epistemic logic of knowing how. In our setting, an inquisitive logic formula α being supported by a state is formalized as "knowing how to resolve α" (more colloquially, "knowing how α is true") holds on the S5 epistemic model corresponding to the state. Based on this epistemic interpretation, we use a dynamic epistemic logic with both know-how and know-that operators to capture the epistemic information behind the innocent-looking connectives in inquisitive logic. We show that the set of valid know-how formulas corresponds precisely to the inquisitive logic. The main result is a complete axiomatization with intuitive axioms using the full dynamic epistemic language. Moreover, we show that the know-how operator and the dynamic operator can both be eliminated without changing the expressivity over models, which is consistent with the modal translation of inquisitive logic existing in the literature. We hope our framework can give an intuitive alternative interpretation of various concepts and technical results in inquisitive logic, and also provide a powerful and flexible tool to do inquisitive reasoning in an epistemic context.

Abstract:Recently Ferraris, Lee and Lifschitz proposed a new definition of stable models that does not refer to grounding, which applies to the syntax of arbitrary first-order sentences. We show its relation to the idea of loop formulas with variables by Chen, Lin, Wang and Zhang, and generalize their loop formulas to disjunctive programs and to arbitrary first-order sentences. We also extend the syntax of logic programs to allow explicit quantifiers, and define its semantics as a subclass of the new language of stable models by Ferraris et al. Such programs inherit from the general language the ability to handle nonmonotonic reasoning under the stable model semantics even in the absence of the unique name and the domain closure assumptions, while yielding more succinct loop formulas than the general language due to the restricted syntax. We also show certain syntactic conditions under which query answering for an extended program can be reduced to entailment checking in first-order logic, providing a way to apply first-order theorem provers to reasoning about non-Herbrand stable models.

Abstract:A unifying logic is built on top of ontologies and rules for the revised Semantic Web Architecture. This paper proposes ALC(P)(U,) which integrates a description logic (DL) that makes a unique names assumption with general rules that have the form of Datalog Programs permitting default negation in the body. An ALC(P)(U) knowledge base (KB) consists of a TBox T of subsumptions, an ABox A of assertions, and a novel PBox P of general rules that share predicates with DL concepts and DL roles. To model open answer set semantics, extended Herbrand structures are used for interpreting DL concepts and DL roles, while open answer sets hold for general rules. To retain decidability, a well-known weak safeness condition is employed. We develop DL tableaux-based algorithms for decision procedures of the KB satisfiability and the query entailment problems.
LOGIC-LM++: Multi-Step Refinement for Symbolic Formulations

Abstract:In this paper we examine the limitations of Large Language Models (LLMs) for complex reasoning tasks. Although recent works have started to employ formal languages as an intermediate representation for reasoning tasks, they often face challenges in accurately generating and refining these formal specifications to ensure correctness. To address these issues, this paper proposes Logic-LM++, an improvement on Logic-LM . It uses the ability of LLMs to do pairwise comparisons, allowing the evaluation of the refinements suggested by the LLM. The paper demonstrates that Logic-LM++ outperforms Logic-LM and other contemporary techniques across natural language reasoning tasks on three datasets, FOLIO, ProofWriter and AR-LSAT, with an average improvement of 18.5% on standard prompting, 12.3% on chain of thought prompting and 5% on Logic-LM.
