Abstract:A single-lens micro-angle measurement system,which used QPD as position-sensing device is introduced in this paper.In the research,lots of its key technologies about the system have been analyzed such as adopted optical principle,the option and defocussing setting of optical devices like photoelectric detector and calculation and analysis of the feasibility of small size and so on.Through these research,the possibility of designing a compact and portable micro-angle measurement system with high sensibility and small volume was confirmed.Furthermore,the measurement range and accuracy of this micro-angle measurement system are obtained by experiment.

Abstract:The design and applications of automatic counter for Michelson interferometer are presented.The photoconductive re sistance and thresholds comparator are used in the device to collect the interference stripes,producing the electric impulses corre sponding to the light and dark stripes.The electric impulses are counted and displayed by the microcontrollers.The device for the experiment has a simply structure,good accuracy and may leave the operator from trivial counting works.Based on the data of experiment,problems of manual count can be solved,measurement error be reduced,thus the accuracy of the experiment im proved.

Abstract:The technology of fluorescence microscope plays a very important role in the field of optical microscopes.However,there are hardly any related teaching experiments in reality.The designing idea and implementation scheme of fluorescence microscope experiments newly developed is introduced.Fluorescence imaging is realized by using incident light fluorescence accessories on an ordinary microscope.The students can make simple specimen by themselves,use CCD camera and personal computer to collect and save images acquired.The design of the fluorescence microscope is an attempt to develop interdisciplinary,research-oriented and open experimental teaching mode.

Abstract:Photon-counting detection is a key technique for detection of weak intensity light and high-speed imaging study. A photon-counting detection and imaging experimental setup was designed and built. Its structure and working principle were introduced in detail. The experimental hardware was composed of Avalanche Photodiode (APD) arrays, suitable driving and quenching circuits and NI-PCI high speed data acquisition card. System software and data acquisition display interface were programmed with Labview and VC++ combination. Weak photon irradiated on the avalanche photodiode which works on Geiger mode was collected by high speed data collection card continuously and processed with personal computer software. Finally, the photo-counting pulse image was acquired by this system. The experimental setup provides a powerful tool for very faint luminescence detecting and high-speed imaging study.

Abstract:The technology of phase contrast microscope which once won the Nobel physics prize has landmark significance in the history of the development of optics,but there are hardly any related teaching experiments in reality.The designing idea and implementation scheme of phase contrast microscope experiments newly developed are introduced.Phase contrast imaging is realized by using phase-contrast accessories on an ordinary microscope.Based on theoretical learning and handling instruments operation,the students use quick adhesive,onion epidermis and yeast cells to make simple specimen by themselves,adjust the microscope to obtain perfect images;use a CCD camera and a personal computer to collect and save images acquired as materials of experiment report.It is an attempt to develop interdisciplinary,research-oriented and opening experiment teaching.

Abstract:To measure each characteristic parameter rapidly for a light-emitting diode,a simple and low-cost light-emitting diode tester is designed in the paper.The structure,functions and hardware circuits of the light-emitting diode(LED) tester are presented.Such parameters as I-V,irradiance,RGB and direction characteristics for several LEDs with different colors are tested by using of the tester.The testing results show that the tester can conveniently and efficiently test several characteristics of LED and has the advantages of low cost and simple operation.

Abstract:The multifunction hand-held sunphotometer can measure the character parameter of the aerosol,vapor,ozone and oxynitrogen by replacing the filter.We design the channel that can image the sun on the four quadrant detector,and can find the best measuring time point by the CPU.That make our device can link to the system that tracks the sun automatically without any change.In this paper,the compositive principle and realization methods of all modules on a small multifunction hand-held sunphotometer have been discussed in detail.

Abstract:The paper presents an overview of the new micro-scale experimental mechanics concepts,methods and devices of optical and scanning microscopic stages developed at photomechanical laboratory of Tsinghua University.The research includes micro speckle interferometry,micro marker method,optical probe method,grain deformation and movement analysis.In particular,it also describes several devices and measurement systems developed in our group,which are double-field-of-view speckle interferometer for thin film tensile test,microscopic speckle interferometry which enables an alternative usage of conventional specular interferometry(CSI),ESPI,TSIP and phase shifting for micro-object shape,in-plane and out-of-plane displacement measurements,micro marker measuring stage for local zone deformation measurement,uniaxial tensile setups using in AFM and SEM measuring stages for micro-objects and thin films testing and other instruments for micro-objects testing,such as positioning and loading system,micro force sensor and programmable driving systems of translation platform and displacement sensor.To prove the applicability of these methods and devices,some applications of measurement examples are given and the problems and further research on micro-scale experimental mechanics are discussed.

Abstract:Spectroscopy is an integral part of chemical research, and the operation of any spectroscopic instrument is critical in chemical education. This study presents a low-cost, do-it-yourself (DIY) style spectrophotometer system that can be adapted for UV-Vis, fluorimetry, and atomic emission applications. The DIY system is constructed with commonly available hardware and 3D-printed parts, totaling less than $50. Python code is also provided to process the color spectrum image into intensity vs. wavelength data, similar to any commercial-level instrument. The functionality of the DIY spectrometer is demonstrated with the absorption of KMnO₄, fluorescence of fluorescein, and atomic emission of LiCl, NaCl, BaCl₂, and SrCl₂. All the collected spectra show accurate results compared to a commercial instrument or existing literature. The goal of this project is to provide a hands-on platform for undergraduate students to see and modify the individual components of a spectrophotometer, which will enhance their understanding of the underlying principles.

Physics Education

Abstract:Optics is an important subfield of physics required for instrument design and used in a variety of other disciplines, including materials science, physics, and life sciences such as developmental biology and cell biology. It is important to educate students from a variety of disciplines and backgrounds in the basics of optics in order to train the next generation of interdisciplinary researchers and instrumentalists who will push the boundaries of discovery. In this paper, we present an experimental system developed to teach students in the basics of geometric optics, including ray and wave optics. The students learn these concepts through designing, building, and testing a home-built light microscope made from component parts. We describe the experimental equipment and basic measurements students can perform to learn principles, technique, accuracy, and resolution of measurement. Students find the magnification and test the resolution of the microscope system they build. The system is open and versatile to allow advanced building projects, such as epi-fluorescence, total internal reflection fluorescence, and optical trapping. We have used this equipment in an optics course, an advanced laboratory course, and graduate-level training modules.
