Abstract:Underfloor air distribution (UFAD) systems are increasingly used for their advantages in improving energy savings, indoor air quality, and thermal comfort. In UFAD systems, an underfloor plenum delivers conditioned air to the air supply diffusers. The distribution of internal air velocity and static pressure in plenums determines the uniformity of the airflow to the occupied zones. As a result, the plenum has a detrimental effect on the characteristics of the supply air and, thus, the resulting indoor air quality and thermal comfort. Nevertheless, most existing studies on underfloor plenums focused on small-scale plenums with a single internal air duct. Large plenums and multiple air ducts in UFAD equipped in large premises are underexplored. In this study, a circular underfloor plenum with a large scale (radius of 15 m, height difference of 0.9−2.9 m) and 503 under-seat diffusers in a conference room was studied using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation (ANSYS Fluent (16.0)). The distributions of airflow velocity and static pressure inside the plenum were analyzed and compared to one concentrated air supply mode and three uniform air supply modes. Based on the air velocity at the center of under-seat diffusers, the outgoing airflow uniformity from the diffusers under four cases was evaluated by the index of air velocity uniformity. The results showed that the multiple supply ducts with bottom air outlets yielded the best uniformity of supply air. The findings of this paper are expected to provide a technical basis for realizing the optimal design of the UFAD system in terms of uniformity of supply air.

Abstract:A new kind of under-floor electric heating system with shape-stabilized phase change material(PCM) plates with air supply was put forward.The system can charge heat by using cheap nighttime electricity and discharge the heat stored at daytime,and may adjust the air flow rate to control the indoor thermal comfort degree.A prototype room with this system was built.The temperatures of the system and the indoor air were measured.The thermal performance of the system was analyzed.The results showed that the system can perform well and control the indoor thermal comfort degree effectively.

Abstract:The infiltration air is an important influencing factor in large space buildings, especially in railway stations with continuous openings. A simulation model is established in this paper to understand the character of infiltration air in the room. From the simulation, the hot and humid infiltration air shows a trend of flowing upwards both for jet ventilation system and radiant floor plus bottom supply air system. For the radiant floor plus bottom supply air system, the upwards trend of infiltration air is more obvious under better temperature and humidity stratification condition. And the impact of infiltration air on the air humidity above the floor is limited near the entering area.

Abstract:In large space buildings such as airports, convention centers, atriums, and entrance halls, the envelope is dominated by glass façades and skylights; this indoor thermal environment is characterized by high-intensity solar radiation and high-temperature internal wall surfaces. A radiant floor is an effective sensible heat removal terminal due to its direct absorption of solar radiation and longwave radiant heat exchange with the wall surfaces. This paper focuses on the performance of radiant floor cooling in large spaces and reviews recent achievements and progress related to its application. The feasibility of radiant floors is considered in terms of enhancing cooling capacity, thermal comfort, and system efficiency, and several projects, including Bangkok Airport in Thailand and Xi׳an Airport in China, are introduced. Based on the complex conditions of indoor heat sources in large spaces, e.g., high-intensity solar radiation and high-temperature wall surfaces, the heat transfer process of a radiant floor from the indoor space to the chilled water is presented, and a detailed description of the key factors that influence performance is given. Research concerning the prediction of the performance of radiant cooling floors with solar radiation is also summarized; these efforts can benefit the estimation of the cooling capacity both for local and entire systems in large spaces. Several other application issues are mentioned, including anti-condensation on the floor surface, the impact of thermal inertia on cooling load regulation, the design capacity of the system, and the influence of outdoor air infiltration.

Abstract:A model of analyzing the thermal performance of a new kind of under-floor electric heating system with shape-stabilized PCM plates and air supply (for effectively using electricity at night and improving indoor thermal comfort) was developed. The model was verified by the experimental data. According to the model, the effects of various factors on the thermal performance of the heating system was analyzed. The results show that the indoor temperature in Beijing and other area can be controlled in the comfort range by starting and stopping air-supply fans during the whole heating season.

Abstract:Low-temperature radiant heating systems are widely used in buildings with significant energy conservation, and they are convenient for the utilization of low-grade energy resources and household metering. In this study, the practical application of a novel radiant floor heating system (RFHS) in cold regions is investigated via construction of an experimental platform for energy consumption and thermal comfort in an office building in Tianjin, China. The results indicated that the novel radiant floor exhibits higher heating capacity and heat transfer coefficient than that of a traditional radiant floor. During the experiment, the average indoor temperature was 25.0°C in the office room and 22.7°C in the conference room, and all instantaneous indoor temperatures exceeded 21°C. To avoid local thermal discomfort, the supply water temperature of the floor can be appropriately decreased by 2–3°C for operation. Additionally, the power consumption of the system is decreased by approximately 11.4% if the indoor temperature is decreased to 20°C. Hence, a 10-h operation mode per day can be adopted in the office building for energy conservation given that the novel radiant floor exhibits superior initial response to intermittent operation. Practical application: In this study, the practical application effect of a new type of water-passing floor is examined in cold regions to provide a design reference for engineering applications. Therefore, it is expected that the results will be helpful to researchers for indoor environments, heating, ventilating, and air conditioning engineers, system manufacturers, and those who want to analyze the operational performance of a radiant floor heating system.

Abstract:Although single/multi-zone thermal models have their own advantages, like simple and fast computations of building energy demand, the accuracy of these models is problematic. The assumption of a uniform room temperature reduces the accuracy of the final energy demand results. In fact, the single/multi-zone thermal models are not able to predict indoor thermal behaviours or building energy demands accurately, if a non-uniform environment in a room or building is created by a single or multiple heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems, i.e. an underfloor air distribution (UFAD) system. The research described in this article investigated the use of a new approach to improve the computational quality and accuracy of the heating energy demands of UFAD systems using an integrated zonal/multi-zone model. Several case studies were carried out, and the results demonstrate not only the advantages of UFAD systems used in a residential house in terms of energy saving, but also the importance of thermostat location in the prediction of building energy consumption. Additionally, the results indicate that the conventional single/multi-zone models are not appropriate to use for UFAD systems in the building energy demand predictions.

Abstract:This paper illustrates a structure of electric floor heating system with latent heat thermal storage plate. This system can charge heat by using cheap nighttime electricity and discharge the heat stored at daytime. A theoretical model is developed, which can analyze the thermal performance of buildings applying such system in winter. The thermal performance of the heating system and the effects of various factors on it are analyzed by modeling and simulation. For a given room located in different climate regions, the optimal effect of using such system is predicted, which testifies the feasibility of this heating mode in different climate regions.

Abstract:The capillary radiant panel for heating studied in the research can run with 30-50°C low-temperature heating resources. It is using of prefabricated forms, achieves heating and decorative integration, and overcomes construction inconvenience of low-temperature hot water radiant heating system. According to the heat transfer mechanism of heating terminals, the established numerical models were compared with laboratory testing to verify the accuracy of these models. Then the CFD software was applied to study the thermal environment of the room, which heated by the ceiling heating panel and heating convector separately. The distribution of air temperature field, as well as the thermal properties of these heating terminals was gained. Capillary radiant panel for heating, as a new heating method, has great potential for application development. The numerical study of this paper will be helpful makes such products extend in China.

Abstract:Due to the wide application of floor heating systems, the radiant floor cooling systems has developed rapidly in recent years. In this paper, TRNSYS numerical simulation methods are used to study the influence of chilled water supply temperature and flow rate on the cold storage characteristics of a standard floor structure for office buildings in northern China. The results are verified by experimental measurements. The functional relationship between the saturated cold storage time and the chilled water flow rate is quadratic polynomial, while the changes of supply-water temperature have no effect on the saturation time; the supply-water temperature has a linear relationship with the saturated cold storage volume, while the chilled water flow rate has almost no effect on the saturation cold storage volume. The accumulated cold volume of floor changes with time in an exponential distribution with four coefficients, and the floor has the characteristics of rapid cold storage. This paper is instructive for the design, application and promotion of radiant floor cooling systems.

Abstract:A kind of electrical floor heating system with a shape-stabilized phase change material (PCM) which has been studied at Tsinghua University in our previous studies, can provide space heating during the whole day and can be controlled conventionally. However, this is not suitable for office buildings where no space heating is needed at night. The effective control is very important for the heating system in such buildings. In this paper, we studied a kind of new electrical floor heating system with ductless air supply and shape-stabilized PCM for thermal storage in order to overcome the shortcomings of the passive under-floor electric heating system with thermal storage. In this paper, we investigated its thermal performance by experiments and simulation, calculated the effects of various factors and discussed the application feasibility in different climate regions. The results show that the total electrical energy consumption was shifted from the peak period to the off-peak period, which would provide significant economic benefits because of the different day and night electricity tariffs. The system can be designed by choosing PCM with proper melting temperature and be controlled by varying velocity of air supply in different conditions.

Abstract:Radiant floor air-conditioning systems are characterized by energy efficiency and comfort. However, at higher sensible heat loads and higher humidity conditions, problems such as condensation, poor comfort, slow thermal response, and difficulty in zoning control may occur. To mitigate these limitations, this study presents a composite air-conditioning system for radiant flooring that includes an air source heat pump., an underfloor coil, a fan coil and a dehumidifier for fresh outdoor air. The composite system was experimentally tested and analyzed for indoor thermal comfort under various operation modes in summer and winter in a specific thermal zone. On the basis of the experiments, the composite system comprises multiple energy supply points, and varying combinations between these functional endpoints can fulfill the comfort needs of the human body even in year-round working conditions. The radiant floor temperature varies from the dew point air temperature by roughly 7°C. Following the test day, summer radiant systems take approximately 30 minutes to reach the set indoor temperature and humidity level.. An hour after the indoor air has reached the desired temperature and humidity, the winter radiation system is activated.

Decentralized heating for residential buildings in Yangtze River basin: A reforming case and analysis

Abstract:In view of the low indoor temperature and unsatisfactory thermal comfort in the residential buildings in Yangtze River basin,a heating system composed of air-source heat pump and radiant floor is installed in an existing residence in Hefei.The test results show that when hot water with temperature of 35℃ is adopted,the radiant floor heating could provide a comfortable thermal environment with indoor air temperature of 16 to 18℃ and uniform in the vertical direction.On the basis of this case,compares the air-supply terminal and radiant floor in indoor thermal comfort and heating capacity,and analyses the feasibility of air-source heat pump as heat source of decentralized heating for residential buildings in Yangtze River basin.

Abstract:Underground urban space (UUS), which represents the future development of cities can effectively alleviate land shortage and improve urban elasticity. To create a suitable living environment, dehumidification in the air conditioning of UUS must be considered. A novel pressurized dehumidification air conditioning system (PDACS) is proposed in this study. The PDACS adopts an air cycle refrigerator and desiccant wheel (DW) simultaneously to adjust the air temperature and humidity to the desired level, this effectively reduces the dehumidification load on the DW. The thermal performance and thermodynamic characteristics of PDACS are analyzed using enthalpy method and endoreversible thermodynamic analysis model, respectively. The results show that the proposed system can achieve efficient dehumidification under a wide range of ambient temperature and humidity. A case study shows that under the condition of ambient temperature of 25 °C and relative humidity of 80%, the coefficient of performance of the system can be increased from 0.257 to 0.582, and the dehumidification capacity of DW can be reduced from 9.22 g/kgdry air to 4.05 g/kgdry air. Thus, we validated the effectiveness of our humidity and temperature control method. The comparative analysis shows that PDACS improves the integration of the system. We then conducted a complete thermal analysis, and obtained the system thermal–moisture–power conversion mechanism to provide strong technical support for the proposed air conditioning design. The PDACS scheme and analysis results proposed in this study will provide new ideas for the design of underground buildings.
