Abstract:Accompanying the rapid economic growth of China, however, the environmental quality has deteriorated. Furthermore, with the rapid expansion of foreign trade, trade and environment linkages have become an important part of policy agenda. It is increasingly recognized that the import of goods and services entails an implicit transfer of environmental effects to the exporting country. Given the relative lagged technology level in developing countries, it is possible that they would be the net losers in the environmental transfer through international trade.

Abstract:China's accession to the WTO in 2001 completed the country's entry into the global economy. We investigate environmental implications of WTO-accession. There are several hypotheses in this area: The scale hypothesis says that production is scaled up and in turn, pollution increases. The technique hypothesis says that production methods become cleaner and pollution decreases. The composition hypothesis says that composition of industries changes and pollution reflects the new composition. We analyse the relative strength of the hypotheses by means of an environmental CGE-model, and in the case of air pollution find support for a composition effect in favour of clean industries. Thanks to the composition effect, emissions to air of greenhouse gases fall. Emissions of particles and SO2 also fall, but emissions of NOx and VOC rise. Since particle and SO2-emissions fall we estimate that public health improves.

Abstract:Despite advances in immunosuppressive drugs, coronary artery transplant vasculopathy (CATV) is the major cause of graft failure that limits long-term survival of cardiac transplantation. The pathogenesis of CATV involves a chronic immune response of the recipient to the donor vasculature in which activated recipient immune cells damage the endothelium and produce cytokines, resulting in vascular smooth muscle cell (VSMC) activation. Activated VSMC migrate from the media into the lumen, proliferate, and elaborate cytokines and matrix proteins, resulting in loss of lumen diameter and vascular contractility. Because of its extensive nature, interventions which are successful in patients with conventional coronary artery disease are often not applicable to the majority of patients with CATV. Although intended for immune suppression, many immunosuppressive agents owe at least part of their efficacy to their anti proliferative effects on VSMC, including rapamycin, mycophenolic acid, cyclosporin, calcium channel blockers, and HMG CoA reductase inhibitors. Because activation of VSMC is responsible for most of the obliterative arterial intimal thickening present in solid organ allografts, the induction of expression of a selected set of genes may reflect the status of acceptance of the vasculature by the recipient, and the activation, migration, and proliferation of VSMC represent potential points for therapeutic intervention. The risk of infection and malignancy associated with immunosuppressive therapy further promote the need to identify a molecular target which directly modulates the VSMC response to injury. This review will summarize the anti proliferative effects that immunosuppressive drugs have on VSMC proliferation. We will also describe efforts to define the genes which regulate the vascular response to allograft injury, and describe how some of these proteins may represent targets to reduce VSMC proliferation and attenuate CATV.
The Global Environmental Impacts of China’s Accession to the WTO: A 20-Year Review

Abstract:Robust empirical assessments of the long-term cumulative global effects of free trade and economic globalization on the environment are limited. This account fills this gap by constructing a dynamic computable general equilibrium model to estimate the environmental effects of a milestone in the recent history of trade liberalization: China's 20-year World Trade Organization (WTO) accession. The modeling shows that China's accession could have resulted in an increase in the global cumulative greenhouse gases (GHGs), sulfur dioxide (SO2), and nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions by roughly 14,000 Mt CO2-eq, 64 Mt, and 46 Mt, respectively. The global production scale effect contributed to most of these estimated increases. The regional total output composition effect also caused higher emissions. Meanwhile, the sectoral output composition effect helped reduce total emissions to a limited extent. Fortunately, a package of emission abatement measures led to a decrease in emission factors and a drop in the global cumulative emissions of GHGs, SO2, and NOx. The findings suggest that to enjoy the free trade and economic globalization benefits and minimize the induced emission increases, it is vitally important to systemically reduce emissions across the entire economy and nurture a low-carbon trade regime.

This study explores how developing countries can leverage international environmental agreements, ISO 14000 standards, and legal reforms to mitigate these barriers. It emphasizes the importance of enhancing environmental standards, fostering international cooperation, and advocating for transparent legal frameworks to align with global environmental practices. The paper also discusses the role of organizations like APEC and the impact of agreements such as the Environmental Goods Agreement in harmonizing standards and reducing trade disputes. By adopting comprehensive strategies and embracing a shift towards a green economy, developing countries can not only overcome these barriers but also enhance their competitiveness in the global market.

Abstract:The WTO Panel and Appellate Body reports on agriculture disputes have developed an important principle that the Agriculture Agreement,the Subsidy Agreement and GATT should be applied simultaneously to the agricultural support measures.Export financial supports as well as relevant governmental practices with impacts on export have also been under the strict scrutiny of the dispute settlement body.The calculation of market price support,and the criteria for green box support measures,which have been subjects of WTO disputes,will possibly be the new issues that China also has to confront with in future.In this regard,it′s proposed that,while pushing forward the legalization of agriculture policy and formulating domestic and external agriculture policies,the careful studies on the implications of WTO agriculture disputes rulings should be conducted.
The Mechanism of the Impact of Export Trade on Environmental Pollution: A Study from a Heterogeneous Perspective on Environmental Regulation from China

Abstract:The majority of the literature currently in existence on trade and pollution has concentrated on the analysis of both factors' combined effects, and only a few studies have used heterogeneous environmental regulation as a starting point to investigate the underlying mechanisms of the impact of export trade on environmental pollution at the indirect level. We construct a mediating and moderating effect model using panel data from 30 provinces in China from 2002 to 2019 to investigate the mechanism of the effect of export trade on environmental pollution. Export trade produces large indirect inhibitory effects on environmental pollution only through market incentive-based restrictions, whereas the mediation impacts of government administrative and public monitoring laws are not significant. By interacting with elements such as technical innovation and energy structure, export trade can also negatively regulate its bad consequences on environmental degradation. According to the heterogeneity analysis's findings, processing trade indirectly reduces pollution emissions by changing administrative rules and cutting emission costs, but general trade indirectly increases environmental pollution by favorably impacting market-based incentives regulations. The moderating effects of improving energy structures, industrial structure optimization, and R&D competition effects diminish the positive aggravating effect of general trade on pollution emissions, while processing trade has the opposite effect. The only means of controlling the harmful impact of processing trade on environmental degradation is through interaction with technical progress.

Abstract:The environment regulations include all measures used to protect the environment.Generally,the imple-mentation of these regulations in export country will leads the production cost of labor intensive products increased,and changes the factors allocation and the productive structure domestically.Furthermore,it will weaken the competitiveness of domestic products which have the characteristics of labor-intensive and high-pollution.Relative to export country,this regulation in import country will be mainly presented as the trade barriers,such as environment dumping and social dumping etc.It usually distorts the comparative competitive advantage of products between import and export countries.Multi-lateral environment regulation mainly realizes its impacts on the comparative competitive advantage by coordinating the environment standards in different countries.Although this kind of regulation is helpful to relief the negative affects on the development of free trade in the world,it can't diminish the possibility of the negative affects on the compara-tive competitiveness of developing countries in short time,caused by the environment barriers in development.According to Poter Hypothesis,a good-tailored environment regulation may stimulate the innovation of enterprise in long time,but in short time the adjust cost must weaken the competitiveness of products of developing country.Therefore,as a devel-oping country,Although China should persist in the trade development in environment friendly way domestically,we should also fight for the reasonable right of pollute emission externally.This right is very important to maintain the sta-ble trade environment and to stabilize the changes of trade structure.

Abstract:China's economy has achieved significant success by integrating itself into the globalized production system over an extended period. However, it is crucial to address the environmental consequences that accompany rapid economic progress. The correlation between trade and environmental pollution is still controversial in the existing literature, with a lack of research specifically investigating this relationship using detailed data at the firm level. Based on the quasi-natural experiment of China's accession to the WTO, this study uses the DID method to evaluate the causal relationship between trade and the environment experimentally. It is found that trade liberalization significantly increases firms' industrial wastewater emissions, and the empirical results remain robust after parallel trend tests, placebo tests, and replacement variables. The mechanism of action suggests that trade expansion enhances corporate pollution emissions through two channels: attracting foreign investment into the country and intensifying energy consumption. A heterogeneity analysis reveals that the pollution-enhancing effect of trade expansion on enterprises is mainly concentrated in export-oriented enterprises, labor-intensive industries, and coastal regions. Additionally, further analysis shows that trade liberalization not only has local impacts but also spatial spillover effects on enterprise pollution. It is found that enhancing environmental governance and reducing corruption can effectively mitigate the adverse environmental consequences caused by trade liberalization.

Abstract:International trade's impact on the pollution reduction, especially varied reduction effects dealing with global or local pollutants has not been thoroughly researched empirically. We explored effects of international trade participation on both the carbon dioxide emission intensity and sulfur dioxide emission intensity with a panel data of 179 major countries during 20 years when globalization thrived. Carbon dioxide causing climate change is a global concern. While sulfur dioxide is one major air pollutant causing local health problems. Empirically, international trade participation mainly reduces carbon dioxide emission intensity but not sulfur dioxide emission intensity. Also, trade in goods form is more effective than in service form. However, international trade participation does little to improving a country's overall technology level, implying that regulation enhancement under international norm is the main mechanism. Compared with developed countries, developing countries can reduce both kinds of pollutant emission intensities more effectively by participating into international trade. A case study of China's entering into World Trade Organization (WTO)'s impact on pollutant reduction can provide more evidence. Also, developing countries with higher industrialization level experiences a bigger improvement in cleaner production. And developing countries with higher democratization level pay more attention to reduce local environmental concerns.

Abstract:The shift of environmental pollution from developed to developing countries is largely induced by global labor and trade trends. Unlike their developed counterparts, developing countries face more pronounced regional disparities in social development within the realm of environmental governance. This paper proposes a binary endogenous model to assess the implications of environmental policies on such developing nations with sizable regional disparities. The model enhances the precision in simulating real-world ramifications of environmental policy implementation. It reveals that the 'pollution haven' effect extends beyond just the relocation of pollutant-generating industries to less developed regions; it also leads to the shipment of products fabricated using environmentally-degrading processes from less developed to developed regions, thereby undermining environmental regulation. Furthermore, the model's results were juxtaposed with China's increasingly stringent national environmental protection policy, adopted since 2000. The study confirms that environmental degradation has a substantial spatial spillover effect positively correlated with internal trade volume. The paper's conclusions assist in offering a new evaluative framework for the ensuing examination of environmental policy practicality in developing countries. It also recommends policy-making tools for enhancing the effectiveness of environmental regulations in these regions, such as limiting internal trade of polluting products alongside environmental levies and subsidies.

Abstract:In recent years,many countries pay more attention to how to achieve the sustainable development of foreign trade under the restriction of environmental capacity.Thereby,the exploration to environment impacts of foreign trade gradually enters the forefront of main school economics.This paper attempts to analyze the environmental impacts of export trade based on main export-oriented industries in China.And the conclusion shows that,on the one hand,the growth of export trade has improved export structure and technological progress and brought about obvious positive impacts to environment.On the other hand,the huge negative scale impacts cover up above improvement and lead to overall negative impacts.In the long run,even if the global economy is facing recession,it is imperative to improve trade-related environmental regulation system,and to effectively promote the internalization of environmental costs of export trade.
