Abstract:We study and realize unidirectional flexural wave transmission in finite phononic crystal beams based on the boundary defect modes. First, we show that by carrying a periodic array of concentrated masses, conventional prismatic beams become phononic crystal beams having multiple transmittance peaks in odd-order bandgaps. We point out that these bandgap transmittance peaks are induced by pass-band splitting and are essentially defect modes due to the existence of the imperfect boundary in finite beam structures. Significant asymmetric flexural wave propagation can be observed in these defect modes by gradually changing each concentrated mass. Using the spectral element method (SEM), the relationship between the concentrated gradient masses and the directivity at the defect modes is discussed. To realize concentrated gradient masses, we periodically attach near-point-contact steel balls with gradient diameters on a prismatic beam. The formation of the bandgaps and unidirectional displacement transmission are experimentally validated with a high-sensitive point-wise fiber Bragg grating displacement sensing system. Asymmetric one-way flexural wave propagation is further demonstrated in the time domain with a Hanning-windowed tone burst signal excited at the two ends of the phononic crystal beam. Agreements between the SEM and experimental results clearly indicate that the asymmetric one-way flexural wave propagation can be achieved in prismatic beams carrying a periodic array of concentrated gradient masses.
The investigation of point defect modes of phononic crystal for high Q resonance

Abstract:Point defect cavity was constructed in a two-dimensional phononic crystal plate. It was excited by a small piezo chip in the cavity, and the vibrations of each point defect mode were detected by an optical interferometer. Point defect modes on 2D phononic crystal plate in vacuum, air, and with water loaded were investigated theoretically and experimentally. It is shown that the Q factors of the point defect modes are determined by inner attenuation, bandgap effects, and medium. The SSS mode (breathing mode) has highest Q factor in vacuum and air among nine modes thanks to low inner attenuation and low energy leakage. By selectively loading the PC with water on one side, the point defect modes with shear movement surfaces suffer lower attenuation and still have rather high Q factors. These conclusions will help to design a new kind of resonator or sensor.

Abstract:A full band gap of the longitudinal mode of elastic waves centered near 2.8 MHz with a width of ~ 1 MHz has been observed in the phononic crystals made of body centered tetragonal tungsten carbide spheres imbedded in aluminum matrix. Two defects states in the band gap due to a 7-sphere defect cluster with silicon nitride spheres have also been observed. Transmitted pressure field pattern clearly shows that at the defect state frequencies the ultrasonic waves transmitted through the doped crystal are emitted from the defect cluster.

Pseudo-time-reversal symmetry and topological edge states in two-dimensional acoustic crystals

Abstract:We propose a simple two-dimensional acoustic crystal to realize topologically protected edge states for acoustic waves. The acoustic crystal is composed of a triangular array of core-shell cylinders embedded in a water host. By utilizing the point group symmetry of two doubly degenerate eigenstates at the \Gamma point, we can construct pseudo-time-reversal symmetry as well as pseudo-spin states in this classical system. We develop an effective Hamiltonian model for the associated dispersion bands around the Brillouin zone center, and find the inherent link between the band inversion and the topological phase transition. With numerical simulations, we unambiguously demonstrate the unidirectional propagation of acoustic edge states along the interface between a topologically nontrivial acoustic crystal and a trivial one, and the robustness of the edge states against defects with sharp bends. Our work provides a new design paradigm for manipulating and transporting acoustic waves in a topologically protected manner. Technological applications and devices based on our design are expected in various frequency ranges of interest, spanning from infrasound to ultrasound.

Abstract:Phononic crystal is an artificial periodic structure with the ability to regulate and control the wave propagation of particular frequencies and has been widely used in many applications. The adhesive layer bonding different constituents in the periodic structure of phononic crystals is usually a viscoelastic material, which has frequency-dependent material properties. In this paper, an analytical model based on the transfer matrix method is developed to study the bandgap structures of SH-wave (a shear wave with the propagation direction normal to the motion plane) in a one-dimensional phononic crystal consisting of two different elastic constituents bonded by the viscoelastic adhesive layer. The results show that the viscosity of the adhesive layer has a significant influence on the bandgap structure at the region of high frequency. The effects of various material parameters of the viscoelastic adhesive layer such as the relaxation time, the final-state modulus and the initial-state modulus are systematically studied. These results are very helpful in the practical design of phononic crystals involving the viscoelastic adhesive layers.

Abstract:Defects in phononic crystals may induce localized states and therefore can serve as microcavities, waveguides, or perfect mirrors. In this article, we numerically and experimentally investigate the deformation behavior and wave propagation characteristics of a defected phononic crystal, which consists of a soft porous matrix and hard inclusions along with a line defect that is introduced designedly. Static and dynamic localized states appear due to the presence of the line defect. The results show that the soft phononic crystal with the line defect can control the guided waves by harnessing the uniaxial compression, which paves a new way to design tunable elastic waveguides.

Abstract:Highly confined Love modes are demonstrated in a phononic crystal based on a square array of etched holes in SiO 2 deposited on the ST-cut quartz. An optimal choice of the geometrical parameters contributes to a wide stop-band for shear waves' modes. The introduction of a defect by removing lines of holes leads to the nearly flat modes within the band gap and consequently paves the way to implement advanced designs of electroacoustic filters and high-performance cavity resonators. The calculations are based on the finite element method in considering the elastic and piezoelectric properties of the materials. Interdigital transducers are employed to measure the transmission spectra. The geometrical parameters enabling the appearance of confined cavity modes within the band gap and the efficiency of the electric excitation were investigated.

Elastic Wave Propagation in Two-Dimensional Ordered and Weakly Disordered Phononic Crystals

Abstract:Elastic wave propagation in two-dimensional solid-solid ordered and weakly disordered phononic crystals is studied by using finite-difference time-domain method. Theoretical results show that obvious band gaps in the ordered crystal could be found, while in the weakly disordered ones the band gaps could partially vanish. Furthermore, with increase of disorder, band gaps are destructed badly and prominently in the high frequency regime while slightly in the low regime. Comparing the energy transmission dependent on time, we find that the coda wave phenomenon is prominent in the ordered crystal while weakened in the weakly disordered ones, and the physical properties are discussed.

Abstract:Phononic crystals (PnCs) exhibit acoustic properties that are not usually found in natural materials, which leads to the possibility of new devices for the complex manipulation of acoustic waves. In this article, a micron-scale phononic waveguide constructed by line defects in PnCs to achieve on-chip, tightly confined guiding, bending, and splitting of surface acoustic waves (SAWs) is reported. The PnC is made of a square lattice of periodic nickel pillars on a piezoelectric substrate. The PnC lattice constant, pillar diameter, and pillar height are set to 10, 7.5, and 3.2 mu m, respectively, leading to a complete bandgap centered at 195 MHz. Interdigitated transducers are monolithically integrated on the same substrate for SAW excitation. The guiding, bending, and splitting of SAWs in the phononic waveguide are experimentally observed through measurement of the out-of-plane displacement fields using a scanning optical interferometer. The combination of destructive interference due to the Bragg bandgap and the interaction of the propagating wave with the pillars around the channel results in a tight confinement of the displacement field. The proposed phononic waveguides demonstrate the feasibility of precise local manipulation of SAW that is essential for emerging frontier applications, notably for phonon-based classical and quantum information processing.

Abstract:By using scattering matrix method, we investigate the acoustic phonons transport in a quantum waveguide embedded double defects at low temperatures. When acoustic phonons propagate through the waveguide, the total transmission coefficient versus the reduced phonon frequency exhibits a series of resonant peaks and dips, and acoustic waves interfere with each other in the waveguide to form standing wave with particular wavelengths. In the waveguide with void defects, acoustic phonons whose frequencies approach zero can transport without scattering. The acoustic phonons propagating in the waveguide with clamped material defects, the phonons frequencies must be larger than a threshold frequency. It is also found that the thermal conductance versus temperature is qualitatively different for different types of defects. At low temperatures, when the double defects are void, the universal quantum thermal conductance and a thermal conductance plateau can be clearly observed. However, when the double defects consist of clamped material, the quantized thermal conductance disappears but a threshold temperature where mode 0 can be excited emerges. The results can provide some references in controlling thermal conductance artificially and the design of phonon devices.

Abstract:Underwater acoustics has wide applications in underwater communications, underwater positioning, underwater navigation, and so on. Inspired by the concept of topological physics, the study of topological states in waterborne phononic crystals provides a brand-new way for innovative control of underwater waves, which has both basic research value and important application prospects. In this work, we design a one-dimensional bilayer iron grid waterborne phononic crystal to realize a synthetic two-dimensional Dirac point by considering the relative lateral translation between the two layers as a synthetic dimension. Through changing the relative lateral translation, the double degenerate band opens a gap, which is characterized by the valley Chern number. As the band gap opens, closes and reopens, the bulk band undergoes a band inversion, that is, a topological phase transition from one valley topological phase to another. At the interface formed by two phononic crystals with distinct valley topological phases, the valley Chen number ensures the deterministic existence of the interface state. Experimental measurements are in good agreement with numerical simulations, both showing the bulk bands of waterborne phononic crystals at different valley topological phases and the interface state dispersion between them. The waterborne phononic crystal proposed in this work hosts a simple structure. With the help of the concept of synthetic dimension, it provides an effective way to study the topological properties of high-dimensional systems in low-dimensional real space systems, and offers new ideas for the design of topological functional underwater acoustic devices. In addition, we can expand the real space system to two or even three dimensions, and introduce more synthetic dimensions to study the topological states and associated transport characteristics of higher-dimensional systems.

Abstract:The authors study dynamics of wave function in two-dimensional phononic crystals with different billiard defects. It is found that the elastic wave is localized in the defect region with soft material. The spatial statistical properties of wave function are studied. More strikingly, they find that given the same area, the chaotic billiard contains more energy than the integrable billiards such as rectangular and circular billiards. The dependence of this "chaotic effect" on wave number k is also studied.

Abstract:The band gaps of elastic wave in two-dimensional phononic crystals with criss-crossed elliptical holes and the tunability of band gaps induced by the artificially introduced inclusions were analyzed through finite element method and experimental method. When the in-plane excitation is uniformly applied along the thickness of a thin phononic crystal plate, the dynamic response of the plate can be approximated as a plane-stress problem. Thin phononic plates with elliptical holes arrayed in a criss-cross pattern were analyzed with a two-dimensional finite element model based on the contrarian thinking in order to calculate the wave transmission along the ΓX direction of the reciprocal lattice. The effects of the ratio of major axis to minor axis, the porosity of holes, and the artificially introduced line defects on the band gaps and the wave propagation characteristics were systematically analyzed. The testing samples with the same dimensions as the numerical models were produced to conduct the transmission experiments. The numerical results accorded well with the experimental results. Results show that the width of band gap enlarges with the increasing of the ratio of major axis to minor axis, and the band gap can be reversely controlled by the insertion of line defects.
Study on Elastic Wave Band Gap Excitation of Phononic Crystal at Ultra-Low Filling Rate

Abstract:Taking a two-dimensional steel/air phononic crystal with square lattice as a model, replacing the single-cylindrical primitive with a tangent double-cylindrical primitive, and calculating the phononic energy band structure by the plane wave expansion method. Compared to the single-cylindrical primitive, the double-cylindrical primitive can break the degeneracy of some energy bands, causing the extremum of the energy band to depart from the original high symmetry points in the Brillouin zone, thereby exciting the generation of low frequency band gaps under ultra-low filling rate. By changing the filling rate, orientation, and inner spacing of the double-cylindrical primitive, the band gap width and position can be adjusted under the condition of low filling rate to obtain a state where narrow band gap and wide band gap coexist.

Abstract:The acoustic response of defect-based acoustic interferometer-like designs, known as Coupled Resonator Acoustic Waveguides (CRAWs), in two-dimensional phononic crystals (PnCs) is reported. The PnC is composed of steel cylinders arranged in a square lattice within a water matrix with defects induced by selectively removing cylinders to create Mach-Zehnder-like (MZ) defect-based interferometers. Two defect-based acoustic interferometers of MZ-type are fabricated, one with arms oriented horizontally and another one with arms oriented diagonally, and their transmission features are experimentally characterized using ultrasonic spectroscopy. The experimental data are compared with finite element method (FEM) simulations and with tight-binding (TB) calculations in which each defect is treated as a resonator coupled to its neighboring ones. Significantly, the results exhibit excellent agreement indicating the reliability of the proposed approach. This comprehensive match is of paramount importance for accurately predicting and optimizing resonant modes supported by defect arrays, thus enabling the tailoring of phononic structures and defect-based waveguides to meet specific requirements. This successful implementation of FEM and TB calculations in investigating CRAWs systems within phononic crystals paves the way for designing advanced acoustic devices with desired functionalities for various practical applications, demonstrating the application of solid-state electronics principles to underwater acoustic devices description.

Band gaps in phononic crystals: Generation mechanisms and interaction effects

Abstract:A wide range of mesoscopic phononic materials can exhibit frequency bands where transmission is forbidden, i.e. band gaps. Three different mechanisms for their origin can be distinguished, namely Bragg, hybridization and weak elastic coupling effects. Characteristic properties of gaps of different origins are investigated and compared, for a 3D crystal of tungsten carbide beads in water, a 2D crystal of nylon rods in water, and a 3D opal-like structure of weakly sintered aluminum beads. For the second type of crystal, it is shown that Bragg and hybridization gaps can be overlapped, allowing the study of the interaction between these two mechanisms. Atypical dispersion characteristics are demonstrated near the resonance frequency.

Topological defect states in elastic phononic plates

Abstract:Topological defects (including disclinations and dislocations) which commonly exist in various materials have shown an amazing ability to produce excellent mechanical and physical properties of matters. In this paper, disclinations and dislocations are firstly introduced into the valley-polarized elastic phononic plate. Deformation of the lattice yields the interface expressing as the topologically protected wave guiding, due to the valley-polarized phase transition of phononic crystals (PnCs) across the interface. Then, disclinations are introduced into the Wannier-type elastic phononic plate. The deformation of the lattice yielded by disclinations produces a pentagonal core with the local five-fold symmetry. The topological bound states are well localized around the boundaries of the pentagonal cores with and without the hollow regions. The topological interface state and the topological bound state immunize against the finite sizes and the moderate disturbances of plates, essentially differing from the trivial defect states. The discovery of topological defect states unveils a new horizon in topological mechanics and physics, and it provides a novel platform to implement large-scale elastic devices with robust topological waveguides and resonators.

Abstract:The propagation of acoustic waves in a square-lattice phononic crystal slab consisting of a single layer of spherical steel beads in a solid epoxy matrix is studied experimentally. Waves are excited by an ultrasonic transducer and fully characterized on the slab surface by laser interferometry. A complete band gap is found to extend around 300 kHz, in good agreement with theoretical predictions. The transmission attenuation caused by absorption and band gap effects is obtained as a function of frequency and propagation distance. Well confined acoustic wave propagation inside a line-defect waveguide is further observed experimentally.

Surface acoustic wave modes in two-dimensional shallow void inclusion phononic crystals on GaAs

Abstract:Surface acoustic waves in two-dimensional phononic crystals consisting of a square array of shallow, two to three micron deep cylindrical void inclusions are studied computationally via the finite element method. For the [110] propagation direction on a (001) GaAs half-space, the conventional Rayleigh wave modes, the layered substrate-associated Sezawa and Lamb modes, the high frequency longitudinal surface waves and bulk waves exhibit hybridization and modal interaction. The longitudinal, vertical shear and horizontal shear bulk wave dispersions are observed to be significant thresholds for surface acoustic waves on a shallow phononic crystal. This results in dramatic changes in the attenuation and surface boundedness properties that enable supersonic modes with diminished attenuation in otherwise largely bulk wave-radiative dispersion branch continua of modes.

Abstract:A novel composite waveguide is proposed to improve the directional emission of phononic crystal waveguide by introducing a point defect array. The finite element simulations indicate that the point defects attached to the output surface of phononic crystal waveguide produce resonant modes, which act as secondary radiation sources. The interferences of sound wave radiated from these radiation sources and waveguide can enhance the normal radiation intensity by 161.21% and reduce the half-power angular width by 85.35%. In addition, when the number of the point defects is large enough, the directivity approaches a steady value. The investigation provides a new method to improve the directional emission of phononic crystal waveguide.
