Abstract:A magnetically separable NiFe2O4 nanoparticle catalyst was prepared readily via a simple one-step hydrothermal process. The catalytic performance of this hetero-nanostructure was investigated by Kneovenagel condensation with aldehydes and active methylene compounds under mild conditions. The newly designed catalyst exhibited a prominent catalytic activity with 99.5% conversion, 99% selectivity and excellent yields, which is compatible with various aldehydes and active methylene compounds with good conversion and high selectivity as well. This easily separated hybrid (NiFe2O4), by exerting an external magnetic field, could be recycled for eight times without significant loss, which started a new era for low-cost fabrication of CC bond for extending usage in a large scale, especially in pharmaceutical and cosmetics industry.

Abstract:A novel skeletal Ni catalyst, prepared by alkali leaching of a Ni–Al alloy obtained by the rapid quenching technique, exhibited higher selectivity in hydrogenation of 2-ethylanthraquinone to “active quinones” than that of the Raney Ni catalyst originating from a conventional alloy. It is suggested that the structural defects of the rapidly quenched alloy lead to a high population of the strongly bound hydrogen, which is essential for selective hydrogenation of the carbonyl group.

Abstract:The textural and structural properties of a skeletal Ni catalyst prepared by alkali leaching of aluminum from the rapidly quenched Ni50Al50 alloy have been investigated by elemental analysis (ICP-AES), nitrogen physisorption, powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and H-2 thermal desorption techniques. As compared to Raney Ni, such a skeletal catalyst has a residual Ni2Al3 phase, lower surface area, higher average pore diameter and porosity, larger mean crystallite size, and unit-cell parameter. These differences are attributable to the metastable character of the pristine rapidly quenched alloy and their relationship with the catalytic behavior is discussed and correlated. Abstract:Rapidly quenched Ni_(50)Al_(50) alloy was prepared by the single roller melt-spinning method and activated by alkaline leaching of Al, thus Ni-based skeletal alloy catalyst was obtained. A variety of experimental techniques, including powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), nitrogen physisorption and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) have been used to investigate its thermal stability. As compared to Raney Ni, the rapidly quenched catalyst has residual Ni_(2)Al_(3) phase which can stabilize the skeleton and inhibit the collapse of the pores. On the other hand, the crystallites in the rapidly quenched catalyst tend to agglomerate, attributable to the metastable nature of the rapidly quenched catalyst as manifested by its expanded lattice constant.

Abstract:Skeletal Ni catalysts (RQ Ni) prepared by alkali leaching of rapidly quenched Ni–Al alloys have been systematically characterized, focusing on the effect of the cooling rate during alloy preparation. It is found that the residual Al content, texture, structure, surface hydrogen species, and active sites of the RQ Ni catalysts can be controlled by the cooling rate of the Ni–Al alloys. In liquid-phase hydrogenation of 2-ethylanthraquinone (eAQ), the RQ Ni catalyst with higher cooling rate favors hydrogenation of the carbonyl group and retards the saturation of the aromatic ring and the formation of the degradation products, thus leading to a higher yield of H2O2. Based on the characterizations, the improved selectivity is ascribed to the dominant population of strongly chemisorbed hydrogen, which is inactive for the hydrogenation of the aromatic ring, along with the electronic interaction between residual metallic Al and Ni, favoring a carbonyl group-bonded configuration of eAQ on the catalyst.

Abstract:A series of rapidly quenched skeletal Ni catalysts were prepared by alkali leaching of Ni-Al alloys solidified at different cooling rates. It has been found that the higher cooling rate leads to more residual Ni2Al3 phase, lower surface area, larger average pore size and porosity, smaller mean crystallite size, larger unit-cell parameter and more uniform active site. The relationship between the structure and catalytic behavior of the rapidly quenched skeletal Ni was discussed by using cinnamaldehyde selective hydrogenation as the probe reaction.

Abstract:Surface morphology, physical-chemical properties of skeletal iron catalysts prepared by leaching of the rapidly quenched (RQ) and naturally quenched (NQ) Fe-Al alloys with an aqueous solution of NaOH were characterized by using a series of techniques including XRD, BET, XPS, SEM, H-2 and CO-TPD. It was found that the RQ skeletal iron catalyst exhibits a smaller particle size, larger specific surface area and pore volume than the NQ one. The H-2 and CO-TPD experiments showed that the RQ skeletal iron exhibits stronger affinity for H-2 and milder affinity for CO compared with the NQ one. But the NQ skeletal catalyst shows a better thermal stability than the RQ catalyst.

Abstract:Here, we report a skeletal nickel catalyst prepared by cumulative processing. The Ni, Al, and CoCrMo multi-component alloys were printed by a dual-powder laser-engineered net-shaping system, and alloy samples with different components were obtained through high-throughput design. After leaching in 5 mol/L NaOH at 40 °C for 2 h, the specific surface area of the catalyst increased with increasing Al content. Increasing the leaching temperature and prolonging the leaching time also effectively increased the specific surface area of the catalyst. After leaching at 80 °C for 12 h, the specific surface area was 42.36 m2/g. After cleaning and hydrogen-reduction treatment at 400 °C, the catalyst showed high catalytic activity. The highest conversion rate of CO reached 89.56%, and the selectivity of CH4 remained above 98% for a long time.

Abstract:The demand for nickel-based catalysts is increasing continuously owing to their low fabrication costs and relatively good performance. Nevertheless, nickel-based catalysts have some drawbacks mainly including poor nanoparticle dispersion of active components, low stability at high temperature, and short service life. In this study, novel nickel-nickel aluminate/sepiolite nanocomposites with spinel NiAl2O4 as an intermediate transition layer were successfully synthesized through the reduction of the NiAl2O4/sepiolite composites obtained by a co-precipitation method. The optimal fabrication parameters of the NiAl2O4/sepiolite composite were determined to be 700 °C for the furnacing temperature, pH = 9 for the precursor suspension, 1:1 for the volume ratio of ethanol to deionized water, and a mass ratio of 7.5: 1 for metal salt/sepiolite. The spinel NiAl2O4 nanoparticles of approximate 10 nm were uniformly dispersed on the sepiolite external surface. The most suitable reduction temperature for the formation of metallic Ni was measured to be 600 °C, and metallic Ni nanoparticles of about 5 nm were embedded in the NiAl2O4 nanoparticles with a good dispersion during the reduction process. The present study is expected to offer a valid route for the synthesis of novel supported nickel-based catalysts with high nanoparticle dispersion at a low cost.

Abstract:In recent years, Ni-based catalysts have attracted widespread attention in many fields due to their low price and high catalytic activity. However, the low dispersion of active components has significantly restricted their large-scale application. In this work, we prepared a new type of sepiolite nanofibers loaded Ni-NiAl2O4 composite by coupling the sol-gel and reduction methods, using nickel nitrate, aluminum nitrate and sepiolite nanofibers as the raw materials. To determine the optimal conditions for preparing the composite material, the effects of complexing agent, additives, sepiolite addition content, calcination temperature and time, and reduction temperature and time on the microstructure of the composite were systematically studied. With comprehensive characterizations, the optimal preparation conditions of the composite were determined. In the optimal composite, the NiAl2O4 nanoparticles with a particle size of ~25 nm were uniformly dispersed on the sepiolite surface, and nickel nanoparticles with a size of 5 nm and well dispersion were rooting in the NiAl2O4 particles. The NiAl2O4 in the composite was acted as the nickel source and transition layer for the growth and dispersion of nickel particles, respectively. This work is expected to provide an effective strategy for the low-cost preparation of Ni-based catalysts, in which the novel transition layer can provide stable nickel particles with good dispersion.

Abstract:A convenient template-and surfactant-free strategy has been developed to prepare porous hierarchical Ni nanostructures by directly calcining the nickel-based flower-like precursor in Ar. The precursor is preformed by refluxing the solution of nickel nitrate and the co-precipitators of hexamethylenetetramine and oxalic acid at 100 degrees C for 6 h. The unique Ni nanostructures are composed of porous sheets of several nanometers in thickness with a wide pore size distribution of 5-100 nm, with a Brunauer-Emmett-Teller specific surface area up to 24.5 m(2) g(-1). The formation process has been in situ examined by thermogravimetry-differential scanning calorimetry-mass spectroscopy, which illuminates the continuous generation of Ni species with the simultaneous release of gaseous species from decomposition and/or reduction of the precursor. Coupled with the good soft ferromagnetism, the porous Ni nanostructures with high surface area have great potential as a magnetically separable catalyst, as demonstrated in the excellent performance for the selective hydrogenation of acetophenone to 1-phenylethanol at 100 degrees C.

Abstract:Nickel is a well-known catalyst in hydrogenation and dehydrogenation reactions. It is currently used in industrial processes as a homogenous and heterogeneous catalyst. However, to reduce the cost and increase the efficiency of catalytic processes, the development of single-atom catalysts (SACs) seems promising. Some SACs have already shown increased activity and stability as compared to nanoparticle catalysts. From year to year, the number of reports devoted to nickel SACs is growing rapidly. Among them, there are very few articles devoted to thermal catalysis, but at the same time, this subject is important. Thus, this review discusses recent advances in the synthesis, structure, and application of nickel SACs, mainly in catalytic hydrogenation/dehydrogenation reactions and in the dry reforming of methane. The collected and analyzed data can be useful in the development of novel nickel SACs for various processes.

Tuning Electronic Structure and Composition of FeNi Nanoalloys for Enhanced Oxygen Evolution Electrocatalysis via a General Synthesis Strategy

Abstract:A facile, surfactant‐free, and gram‐level synthesis method is reported for synthesizing a wide range of nanoalloys. The relationships between the composition of FexNi(1−x) nanoalloy, its electronic structure, and the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activity are studied and analyzed. By optimizing the composition and mass loading, FeNi nanoalloy shows an excellent OER activity, which outperforms the state‐of‐the‐art RuO2. Developing low‐cost and efficient oxygen evolution electrocatalysts is key to decarbonization. A facile, surfactant‐free, and gram‐level biomass‐assisted fast heating and cooling synthesis method is reported for synthesizing a series of carbon‐encapsulated dense and uniform FeNi nanoalloys with a single‐phase face‐centered‐cubic solid‐solution crystalline structure and an average particle size of sub‐5 nm. This method also enables precise control of both size and composition. Electrochemical measurements show that among FexNi(1−x) nanoalloys, Fe0.5Ni0.5 has the best performance. Density functional theory calculations support the experimental findings and reveal that the optimally positioned d‐band center of O‐covered Fe0.5Ni0.5 renders a half‐filled antibonding state, resulting in moderate binding energies of key reaction intermediates. By increasing the total metal content from 25 to 60 wt%, the 60% Fe0.5Ni0.5/40% C shows an extraordinarily low overpotential of 219 mV at 10 mA cm−2 with a small Tafel slope of 23.2 mV dec−1 for the oxygen evolution reaction, which are much lower than most other FeNi‐based electrocatalysts and even the state‐of‐the‐art RuO2. It also shows robust durability in an alkaline environment for at least 50 h. The gram‐level fast heating and cooling synthesis method is extendable to a wide range of binary, ternary, quaternary nanoalloys, as well as quinary and denary high‐entropy‐alloy nanoparticles.

In Situ Thermal Atomization to Convert Supported Nickel Nanoparticles into Surface‐Bound Nickel Single‐Atom Catalysts

Abstract:The arrangement of the active sites on the surface of a catalysts can reduce the problem of mass transfer and enhance the atom economy. Herein, supported Ni metal nanoparticles can be transformed to thermal stable Ni single atoms, mostly located on the surface of the support. Assisted by N-doped carbon with abundant defects, this synthetic process not only transform the nanoparticles to single atoms, but also creates numerous pores to facilitate the contact of dissolved CO2 and single Ni sites. The proposed mechanism is that the Ni nanoparticles could break surface C-C bonds drill into the carbon matrix, leaving pores on the surface. When Ni nanoparticles are exposed to N-doped carbon, the strong coordination splits Ni atoms from Ni NPs. The Ni atoms are stabilized within the surface of carbon substrate. The continuous loss of atomic Ni species from the NPs would finally result in atomization of Ni NPs. CO2 electroreduction testing shows that the surface enriched with Ni single atoms delivers better performance than supported Ni NPs and other similar catalysts.

Abstract:Skeletal Ni (RQ Ni) catalyst was prepared by alkali leaching of rapidly quenched Ni50Al50 alloy. By impregnating RQ Ni with SnCl4 followed by thermal treatment in inert atmosphere, homogeneous Sn-modified skeletal Ni (RQ Ni–Sn) catalysts were obtained. It was found that thermal treatment induces alloying of the deposited metallic Sn with Ni, forming Ni3Sn alloy segregated on the catalyst surface. In aqueous-phase reforming of ethylene glycol, the RQ Ni catalyst was less selective in producing H2 but more selective in producing alkanes than the Raney Ni catalyst described in the literature. This is attributed to the expansion of the lattice of RQ Ni favoring the dissociation of CO and, consequently, the methanation reaction consuming H2. Moreover, the structural difference influences the reaction pathway, with the undesired CO cleavage pathway obstructed on RQ Ni. Modification of RQ Ni with Sn drastically improves the H2 selectivity. On the RQ Ni80Sn20 catalyst, alkane production was virtually retarded, whereas H2 selectivity as high as 98 mol% was achieved at high conversion. Based on the characterizations and previous findings, it is suggested that Sn may block the active sites for CO adsorption and/or dissociation, thus suppressing the undesired methanation reaction. On the other hand, bifunctional Ni–Sn ensembles may form, in which Sn facilitates H2O dissociation while neighboring Ni adsorbs CO, thus promoting the desired water–gas shift reaction, leading to more H2.
Atomic-Dispersed Coordinated Unsaturated Nickel–Nitrogen Sites in Hollow Carbon Spheres for the Efficient Electrochemical CO 2 Reduction

Abstract:Reducing carbon dioxide to high value-added chemicals is of high importance due to its vital role in mitigating CO2 emission and energy crisis. However, seeking for robust catalysts with low overpotential, high selectivity, and stability is extremely challenging. Herein, a single Ni atom anchored on an N-doped carbon (Ni–N–C) catalyst was designed and prepared via a facile synthesis method to embed highly and evenly dispersed, coordinated unsaturated nickel–nitrogen active sites into a hollow carbon matrix with abundant micropores. The prepared Ni–N–C catalysts possess a unique electronic structure, coordination environment, and maximized atomic utilization, which accordingly show a higher intrinsic activity and remarkable selectivity for the electrochemical reduction of CO2. Additionally, the coordination structure and content of Ni can be easily modulated by changing the calcination temperature, which plays a vital role for the catalytical performance. As a result, the Ni–N–C catalysts achieve over 90% for CO at a wide potential window from −0.6 to −1.0 V with a maximum value of 97% at −0.8 V. Abstract:The low-temperature molecular precursor approach can be beneficial to conventional solid-state methods, which require high temperatures and lead to relatively large crystalline particles. Herein, a novel, single-step, room-temperature preparation of amorphous nickel pnictide (NiE; EP, As) nanomaterials is reported, starting from NaOCE(dioxane)n and NiBr2 (thf)1.5 . During application for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), the pnictide anions leach, and both materials fully reconstruct into nickel(III/IV) oxide phases (similar to γ-NiOOH) comprising edge-sharing (NiO6 ) layers with intercalated potassium ions and a d-spacing of 7.27 Å. Remarkably, the intercalated γ-NiOOHx phases are nanocrystalline, unlike the amorphous nickel pnictide precatalysts. This unconventional reconstruction is fast and complete, which is ascribed to the amorphous nature of the nanostructured NiE precatalysts. The obtained γ-NiOOHx can effectively catalyse the OER for 100 h at a high current density (400 mA cm-2 ) and achieves outstandingly high current densities (>600 mA cm-2 ) for the selective, value-added oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF). The NiP-derived γ-NiOOHx shows a higher activity for both processes due to more available active sites. It is anticipated that the herein developed, effective, room-temperature molecular synthesis of amorphous nickel pnictide nanomaterials can be applied to other functional transition-metal pnictides.
