Abstract:Borohydrides in alkaline media are potential fuels for fuel cells due to their high energy and power density. In this work, we studied the anodic oxidation of borohydrides on a nickel electrode. The open-circuit potential was found to be about 0.15-0.2 V more negative than the hydrogen potential, depending on the concentration of BH4-. The results of polarization measurements indicated that a high power density can be achieved for the BH4-/Ni system. However, the coulombic efficiency was found to be 50% or less due to hydrogen evolution. A further investigation showed that hydrogen gas was not only generated from the hydrolysis reaction, but also from the electrochemical reaction. The actual anodic reaction of borohydride on the Ni electrode was proved to be a four-electron process rather than an eight-electron one. (C) 2003 The Electrochemical Society.
Alloying Nickel with Molybdenum Significantly Accelerates Alkaline Hydrogen Electrocatalysis

Abstract:Bifunctional hydrogen electrocatalysis (hydrogen-oxidation and hydrogen-evolution reactions) in alkaline solution is desirable but challenging. Among all available electrocatalysts, Ni-based materials are the only non-precious-metal-based candidates for alkaline hydrogen oxidation, but they generally suffer from low activity. Here, we demonstrate that properly alloying Ni with Mo could significantly promote its electrocatalytic performance. Ni4Mo alloy nanoparticles are prepared from the reduction of molybdate-intercalated Ni(OH)(2) nanosheets. The final product exhibits an apparent hydrogen-oxidation activity exceeding that of the Pt benchmark and a record-high mass-specific kinetic current of 79 A g(-1) at an overpotential of 50 mV. A superior hydrogen-evolution performance is also measured in alkaline solution. These experimental data are rationalized by our theoretical simulations, which show that alloying Ni with Mo significantly weakens its hydrogen adsorption, improves the hydroxyl adsorption and decreases the reaction barrier for water formation.

Abstract:Anodic performances of alkali borohydrides on several electrocatalysts such as Ni, Raney Ni, Pd, Pt, Cu, Au have been studied in an effort to develop suitable electrode materials for a borohydride-fueled fuel cell. The open-circuit potentials (OCPs), polarization performances, and hydrogen evolution behaviors were examined in a three-electrode system. The open-circuit potential was found to be dependent on borohydride concentration and also influenced by the electrocatalyst. In concentrated borohydride solutions used in this work, electrode polarizations were less influenced by the fuel concentration. Borohydrides on different electrocatalysts showed different hydrogen evolution behaviors. The relation of hydrogen evolution rate with the anode current was found to change not only with the concentration of borohydride and but also with the electrode material. Comparison of anodic behaviors of borohydride on different electrodes implies that the anodic oxidation of borohydride, as a multi-step process, may take different reaction paths, depending on the electrocatalyst and reaction conditions such as the borohydride concentration.

Abstract:The direct borohydride fuel cell (DBFC) employs an alkaline borohydride solution as the anodic fuel. In this study, several Ni-based hydrogen storage alloys were studied as the anode materials for the DBFC. It was proved that hydrogen storage materials can absorb hydrogen during immersing in the borohydride solution. When used as the anode catalysts, these alloys usually showed less negative potentials than the pure nickel electrode. It was observed that hydrogen evolution was partially depressed through the electrochemical oxidation of the absorbed hydrogen at low borohydride concentrations. However, at high borohydride concentrations, the electrochemical reaction starting from borohydride species seems to be kinetically more favorable than the oxidation of the absorbed hydrogen. It was also found that the increases in specific surface area, surface activity and temperature improved the polarization properties of the alloy electrodes but hydrogen evolution was also increased.

Abstract:Ni-based materials are cost-efficient electrocatalysts for the oxygen and hydrogen evolution reactions (OER and HER). Specifically, high-valence nickel oxides have been recently identified as highly active for both reactions; however, the origin of their activity during operation, particularly towards the HER, is still undefined. Herein, electrodeposition was used to produce Ni-based electrocatalysts supported on carbon fiber paper, followed by UV/O3 treatment to oxidize and modify their surface chemistry. The resulting electrodes were composed of nanoclusters formed by a metallic nickel core and ultrathin sheets of a high-valence nickel oxide whose crystalline structure was similar to NiO2, with Ni2+/Ni3+ oxidation states. Upon investigating the effect of the electrochemical conditioning of these high-valence nickel oxide/nickel electrodes, confirming the formation of surface β-Ni(OH)2. This surface layer improved the performance of the electrode by providing active sites for H2O adsorption and dissociation, as indicated by detailed density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The origin of the higher HER activity of β-Ni(OH)2 (001) surface compared to NiO2 (2D), and Ni (111) surfaces is attributed to its unique electronic structure. The high valence nickel oxide/nickel electrodes possessed robust long-term OER and HER stability over 24h. Finally, the potential for modifying the structural composition of these electrodes and their use as bifunctional electrocatalysts for the water-splitting reaction was demonstrated by using the resulting electrodes in an electrolyzer coupled with/without a photovoltaic cell.

Abstract:In this work, an amorphous Ni-B alloy was synthesized by chemical reduction and used in a direct borohydride fuel cell (DBFC). Characterization of the catalyst structure, composition, and morphology was performed by XRD, EDX, TEM, and SEM. In addition, the results showed that Ni-B presents as amorphous nanoparticles. The particle diameters ranged from 22 to 25 nm. The cyclic voltammetry (CV) and chronoamperometry (CA) tests proved that Ni-B has better electrocatalytic activity and higher stability towards KBH4 oxidation compared to a pure Ni catalyst. A single cell was assembled with a Ni-B anode and a LaNi0.9Ru0.1O3 cathode. A peak power density of 180 mW cm−2 was achieved at room temperature. In addition, the fuel utilization rate was approximately 41% at a constant current density of 200 mA cm−2, illustrating that some BH4− hydrolysis occurs on the Ni-B surface. Finally, the cell had no attenuation after 180 h test, showing good stability.

Abstract:Metal nickel (Ni) has been developed as hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) catalyst for water-alkali electrolyzers for almost a century. However, the catalytic efficiency and durability of metallic Ni is still far from satisfactory due to its inappropriate electronic structure and non-corrosion-resistant property. Herein, we report a facile strategy to fabricate the carbon-coated boron-doping nickel nanoparticles () via a convenient boronization and a subsequent carbonization treatment of the Ni-based metal organic framework (Ni 2 (OH) 2 (C 8 H 4 O 4 )). Such process also ensured the catalyst with high electrochemically active surface area. Particularly, the B-doping would induce the electron redistribution of Ni, resulting in optimized H 2 O dissociation and H* association, thereby significantly improving the alkaline HER kinetics. Benefiting from the contribution of these favourable properties, the as-prepared catalyst exhibits remarkable alkaline HER activity with an overpotential of only 26 mV to reach a current density of 10 mA cm −2 and, more impressively, with superior durability in the constant-current test of 50 h at the different current densities of 10, 50 and 100 mA cm –2 . The combination of these excellent characteristics clearly makes catalyst stand out from existing competitors towards alkaline HER.

Abstract:Developing advanced electrocatalysts with exceptional two electron (2e–) selectivity, activity and stability are crucial for driving oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) to produce hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). Herein, a composition engineering strategy has been adapted to flexibly regulate the intrinsic activity of amorphous nickel boride nanoarchitectures for efficient 2e– ORR by oriented reduction of Ni2+ with different amounts of BH4–. Among borides, the amorphous NiB2 delivers the 2e– selectivity close to 99% at 0.4 V and over 93% in a wide potential range, together with a negligible activity decay under prolonged time. Notably, an ultrahigh H2O2 production rate of 4.753 mol gcat−1 h−1 has been achieved upon assembling NiB2 in the practical gas diffusion electrode. The combination of X‐ray absorption and in situ Raman spectroscopy, as well as transient photovoltage measurements with density functional theory unequivocally reveal that the atomic ratio between Ni and B induces the local electronic structure diversity, allowing optimization of the adsorption energy of Ni towards *OOH and reducing the interfacial charge transfer kinetics to inhibit the formation of O‐O. Nitridated Nickel Mesh as Industrial Water and Alcohol Oxidation Catalyst: Reconstruction and Iron‐Incorporation Matters

Abstract:A self‐supported nickel nitride (pre)catalyst on a nickel mesh electrode (Ni3N/NM) for industrial alkaline oxygen evolution and selective oxygenation of benzyl alcohol is discovered. Its remarkable performance and durability (>235 h) along with a mere overpotential of 0.28 V at 1 A cm−2 under 6 M KOH at 85 °C is attributed to iron from KOH electrolyte transforming into Fe‐rich NiFe layered (oxy)hydroxide active catalyst. Nickel mesh (NM) is used in industrial alkaline water electrolyzers due to its cost‐effectiveness and conductivity. However, the decisive factors that advance the efficiency and sustainability of such electrodes are only partially understood. Herein, an efficient NM‐based electrocatalyst for the oxygen evolution reaction is developed via a single‐step nitridation route on a commercially used NM substrate and sheds light on the role of reconstruction and iron content to boost catalyst performance and durability. Remarkably, the activated Ni3N/NM catalyst required an overpotential of 0.46 V to deliver 1 A cm−2 in ambient conditions (1 M KOH, 25 °C). This overpotential decreases substantially to 0.28 V in industrially relevant conditions (6 M KOH, 85 °C) and is maintained for 235 h. Ni3N/NM partially transformed into NiFe layered (oxy)hydroxide in both conditions, while the active structure's Fe content is reconstruction condition dependent (temperature and KOH concentration). Electrodes reconstructed under industrially relevant conditions performed better than ambient reconstructed ones due to a more pronounced iron‐incorporation from KOH and the evolution of porous morphologies. In industrial environments, activated Ni3N/NM excels in selectively converting benzyl alcohol to benzoic acid, achieving an impressive yield of 96%.

Abstract:In situ XPS was used to study the anti-oxidation behavior of Co and B in nano-sized Ni-Co-B amorphous alloy and the relationship between the surface contents and the treating oxidation conditions by O-2 as well as the changes of the surface elemental contents with the depth of the sample. It was found that the elemental B was preferably oxidized, then the elemental Co could be oxidized. After all elemental B and Co were used up, the surface elemental Ni began to be oxidized by O-2. In addition, the oxides from B and Co were inclined to enrich on the surface after the oxidation. It was the preferential oxidation of B and Co that protected the Ni active centers from oxidation during the catalytic hydrogenation.
A Rational Solid-State Synthesis of Supported Au-Ni Bimetallic Nanoparticles with Enhanced Activity for Gas-Phase Selective Oxidation of Alcohols.

Abstract:A facile confined solid-state seed-mediated alloying strategy is applied for the rational synthesis of supported Au-Ni bimetallic nanoparticles (BMNPs). The method sequentially deposits nickel salts and AuNP seeds into the ordered array of extra-large mesopores (EP-FDU-12 support) followed by a high-temperature annealing process. The size, structure, and composition of the AuNi BMNPs can be well tuned by varying the AuNP seeds, annealing temperature, and feeding ratio of metal precursors. Kinetic studies and DFT calculations suggest that the introduction of the Ni component can significantly prompt the O2 activation on AuNPs, which is critical for the selective alcohol oxidation using molecular O2 as the oxidant. The optimal Au-Ni BMNP catalyst showed the highest turnover frequency (TOF) (59 000 h-1, 240 °C) and highest space-time yield (STY) of benzyl aldehyde (BAD) productivity (9.23 kg·gAu-1·h-1) in the gas-phase oxidation of benzyl alcohol (BA), which is at least about 5-fold higher than that of other supported Au catalysts.

Abstract:Hydroxide exchange membrane fuel cells offer possibility of adopting platinum-group-metal-free catalysts to negotiate sluggish oxygen reduction reaction. Unfortunately, the ultrafast hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR) on platinum decreases at least two orders of magnitude by switching the electrolytes from acid to base, causing high platinum-group-metal loadings. Here we show that a nickel-molybdenum nanoalloy with tetragonal MoNi4 phase can catalyze the HOR efficiently in alkaline electrolytes. The catalyst exhibits a high apparent exchange current density of 3.41 milliamperes per square centimeter and operates very stable, which is 1.4 times higher than that of state-of-the-art Pt/C catalyst. With this catalyst, we further demonstrate the capability to tolerate carbon monoxide poisoning. Marked HOR activity was also observed on similarly designed WNi4 catalyst. We attribute this remarkable HOR reactivity to an alloy effect that enables optimum adsorption of hydrogen on nickel and hydroxyl on molybdenum (tungsten), which synergistically promotes the Volmer reaction.
Alpha-Nickel Hydroxide Coating of Metallic Nickel for Enhanced Alkaline Hydrogen Evolution

Abstract:In this work, alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) processes of three typical nickel-based electrocatalysts [i. e., Ni, α-Ni(OH)2 , and β-Ni(OH)2 ] were investigated to probe critical factors that determine the activity and durability. The HER activity trend was observed as Ni≫α-Ni(OH)2 >β-Ni(OH)2 , likely attributed to a synergy between metallic Ni and Ni(OH)2 components on the Ni surface and fast water dissociation kinetics on the α-Ni(OH)2 surface. With the HER proceeding, the metallic Ni surface, however, gradually became α-Ni(OH)2 , and α-Ni(OH)2 surface ultimately transformed into β-phase, leading to a dramatic activity decrease of Ni electrodes. Therefore, Ni electrodes were coated with α-Ni(OH)2 nanosheets to slow down the nickel hydroxylation and optimize the surface ratio of Ni(OH)2 to metallic Ni. This simple coating procedure enhanced both activity and durability of Ni electrocatalysts.
Highly Active and Durable Electrocatalytic Water Oxidation by a NiB0.45/NiO Core-Shell Heterostructured Nanoparticulate Film

Abstract:On the way to energy-efficient and cost-effective hydrogen production by electrochemical or photoelectrochemical water splitting, it is of primary importance to develop highly active and durable water oxidation electrocatalysts based on earth-abundant elements. Here we report a highly active, robust, cheap, and facilely fabricated O2-evolving catalyst on a Cu foil, NiB0.45-250/Cu, which forms a NiB0.45/NiOx core-shell heterostructured nanoparticulate film during anodic electrolysis. The performance of NiB0.45-250/Cu, to produce 10 mA cm−2 at 296 mV overpotential in 1 M KOH over 60 h, is at par with the best efficiency of earth-abundant electrocatalysts reported to date and surpasses that of IrO2-loaded copper electrode under identical conditions. Experimental evidence and theoretical calculations reveal the correlations of B/Ni atomic ratio and annealing temperature with the morphology, surface microtexture, electrochemical active surface area, and electrical conductivity of NiBx films. Optimal combination of these factors can evidently enhance the catalytic activity of nickel boride electrocatalysts.
Unraveling Stoichiometry Effect in Nickel‐Tungsten Alloys for Efficient Hydrogen Oxidation Catalysis in Alkaline Electrolytes

Abstract:Anion-exchange membrane fuel cells provide the possibility to use platinum group metal-free catalysts, but the anodic hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR) suffers from sluggish kinetics and its source is still debated. Here, over nickel-tungsten (Ni-W) alloy catalysts, we show that the Ni:W ratio greatly governs the HOR performance in alkaline electrolyte. Experimental and theoretical studies unravel that alloying with W can tune the unpaired electrons in Ni, tailoring the potential of zero charge and the catalytic surface to favor hydroxyl adsorption (OHad). The OHad species coordinately interact with potassium (K+) ions, which break the K+ solvation sheath to leave free water molecules, yielding an improved connectivity of hydrogen-bond networks. Consequently, the optimal Ni17W3 alloy exhibits alkaline HOR activity superior to the state-of-the-art platinum on carbon (Pt/C) catalyst and operates steadily with negligible decay after 10,000 cycles. Our findings offer new understandings of alloyed HOR catalysts and will guide rational design of next-generation catalysts for fuel cells.

Abstract:Abstract Operating fuel cells in alkaline environments permits the use of platinum-group-metal-free (PGM-free) catalysts and inexpensive bipolar plates, leading to significant cost reduction. Of the PGM-free catalysts explored, however, only a few nickel-based materials are active for catalyzing the hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR) in alkali; moreover, these catalysts deactivate rapidly at high anode potentials owing to nickel hydroxide formation. Here we describe that a nickel–tungsten–copper (Ni 5.2 WCu 2.2 ) ternary alloy showing HOR activity rivals Pt/C benchmark in alkaline electrolyte. Importantly, we achieved a high anode potential up to 0.3 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode on this catalyst with good operational stability over 20 h. The catalyst also displays excellent CO-tolerant ability that Pt/C catalyst lacks. Experimental and theoretical studies uncover that nickel, tungsten, and copper play in synergy to create a favorable alloying surface for optimized hydrogen and hydroxyl bindings, as well as for the improved oxidation resistance, which result in the HOR enhancement.

Abstract:Corrosion poses a significant challenge to many materials, from industrial structures to electrochemical catalysts. Nickel (Ni) is considered one of the most active metal catalysts for electrochemical water oxidation reaction in the alkaline environment. To gain more insight into corroded nickel electrodes in the water oxidation reaction, we employed operando ambient pressure x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy to detect the nickel/electrolyte interface under various potentials. To probe the influence of various halide anions on cycled Ni electrode/electrolyte interfaces undergoing the oxygen evolution reaction, we examined the surface changes in nickel electrodes after repeated electrochemical cycles in the presence of KOH mixed with KBr and KI under various potentials. As the applied potential became more anodic, we detected the formation of surface hydroxide and bromide when Br− was present in the electrolyte, whereas in I− -containing electrolytes, we found only hydroxides. The formation of oxidized Ni species was highly dependent on the type and concentration of halide ions. Br− facilitated the formation of more oxidized Ni species than I− did under the same concentration. In the presence of higher concentrations of potassium halide (100 mM) in the bulk electrolyte, metallic nickel could be completely oxidized at the most anodic potentials with surface hydroxide formation. This work reports the observation of cationic metal ions in the bulk electrolyte and describes in situ observation of degradation at the metal/electrolyte interface.
