Abstract:Right-handed helical organic-inorganic hybrid silica nanotubes were prepared using a chiral anionic gelator with 3-aminopropyltrimethoxysilane as a co-structure-directing agent and 1,4-bis(triethoxysilyl)benzene, 4,4'-bis(triethoxysilyl)-1,1'-biphenyl, bis(triethoxysilyl)methane, 1,2-bis(triethoxysilyl)ethane, and 1,2-bis(triethoxysilyl)ethene as the precursors. The sol-gel reactions were carried out in a mixture of water and ethanol at the volume ratio of 2.2:1.8. The nanostructures were studied using field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). For 4,4'-biphenylene-silica nanotube, the circular dichroism spectrum indicates at least some of the biphenyl rings within the walls stack in chiral form. The TEM images taken after different reaction time reveal a cooperative mechanism. The growth of the organic self-assemblies and the adsorption of the hybrid silica oligomers occurred at the same time.

Abstract:Three chiral cationic gelators were synthesized. They can form translucent hydrogels in pure water. These hydrogels become highly viscous liquids under strong stirring. Mesoporous silica nanotubes with coiled pore channels in the walls were prepared using the self-assemblies of these gelators as templates. The mechanism of the formation of this hierarchical nanostructure was studied using transmission electron microscopy at different reaction times. The results indicated that there are some interactions between the silica source and the gelator. The morphologies of the self-assemblies of gelators changed gradually during the sol-gel transcription process. It seems that the silica source directed the organic self-assemblies into helical nanostructures.

Abstract:A chiral low-molecular-weight amphiphile, l - 16Val6PyBr , was synthesized from l -valine, which can cause physical gels in water, benzene and nitrobenzene. Silica nanotubes with spring-like pore channels in the walls were prepared using the self-assemblies of it as templates via a single-templating approach. The morphologies and pore architectures of the silica nanotubes were studied using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), field-emission scanning electron microscopy, powder X-ray diffraction and N 2 sorptions. The TEM images taken after different reaction times indicated a cooperation mechanism. Moreover, nanoworms with concentric circular pore channels and nanoflakes with vertical pore channels were prepared by changing the concentration of the catalyst.

Abstract:Two chiral hydrogelators, L-18ValPyBr and D-18ValPyBr, composed of L- or D-valine, were synthesized. They self-assembled into thin membranes under high concentration and helical nanofibers under low concentration in pure water. Sol-gel transcription reactions were carried out under both acidic and basic conditions using the self-assemblies of these two gelators and the mixtures with CTAC as templates and TEOS as precursor. Under acidic conditions, minimum gel concentrations of L-18ValPyBr and D-18ValPyBr are very low. After sol-gel polymerization, a kind of cotton-like silica constructed by twisted mesoporous silica ribbons was obtained. These ribbons were 60 nm in width and 10 nm in thickness. Under basic conditions, both mesoporous twisted ribbons and nanotubes constructed by tightly coiled ribbons were obtained. Generally, left-handed helical structures were obtained by using L-18ValPyBr, while right-handed helical structures were obtained by using D-18ValPyBr. The morphologies were sensitive to the concentration of NH3. When the concentration of NH3 was 2.5 wt%, twisted ribbons were obtained. When the concentration of NH3 was higher than 5.0 wt%, nanotubes constructed by tightly coiled ribbons were obtained. Mesoporous silica structures in nano- and micro-size were prepared by using the mixtures of L-18ValPyBr and CTAC under both acidic and basic conditions. Under acidic conditions, helical mesoporous fibers were obtained, and their diameter was increased with increasing the ratio of CTAC to gelator. The nanofibers obtained under basic conditions were shorter than those obtained under acidic conditions. The mesoporous channels were parallel each other and running along the axis of nanofibers.

Abstract:Helical mesoporous silica, methylene−silica, ethane−silica, ethene−silica, octane−silica, and phenylene−silica nanofibers were successfully prepared by sol−gel polymerization using a chiral cationic gelator under a shear flow. These helical nanofibers were constructed by bundles of ultrafine nanofibers that were formed by bundles of nanotubes. The nanotubes of the smallest unit had inner helical channels with uniform inside diameters. The morphologies of the silica nanofibers were sensitive to preparation conditions. In acidic conditions, scanning electron microscopy images showed right-handed helical nanofibers. In basic conditions, rodlike mesoporous nanofibers were formed. The circular dichroism spectrum of the phenylene−silica indicated that the chirality of the gelator was transferred to the arrangement of the phenylene segment of the hybrid silica. The thermostability was so high that the morphologies of the phenylene−silica were maintained even after being calcined at 650 °C for 5 h in air.

Abstract:A chiral amphiphilic compound derived from L-phenyl glycine was synthesized according to the literature.The self-assembly behaviour in deionized water was studied using circular dichrosim(CD).A series of right-handed twisted organic-inorganic hybrid silica nanotubes were prepared using this amphiphilic compound and a co-structure-directing agent through a sol-gel transcription method.The CD spectra of the 4,4′-biphenyl-silica nanotubes indicated that the aromatic rings stacked in chiral within the walls of nanotubes.

Abstract:Helical nanostructured silica was prepared by sol-gel method using a chiral cationic gelator cyclo(L-11-(N-methylimidazolium)undecylasapaginyl-L-phenylalanyl) perchlorate(11mimClO4) and cetyltrimethylammonium chloride(CTAC) as templates.Field emitted scanning electron microscopy(FESEM) was utilized to characterize the shape,size and structure of the products obtained at different reaction conditions.By controlling the mass ratio of gelator to CTAC,mesoporous helical silica nanofibers was obtained.These mesoporous silica nanofibers were hundreds nm in length and 3.0 nm in inner-pore-diameter.

Abstract:Single-handed, helical, 4,4'-biphenylene-bridged polybissilsesquioxane nanotubes were prepared by using the self-assemblies of a pair of chiral low-molecular-weight gelators as templates. Single-handed, helical, carbon/silica nanotubes were obtained after carbonization of the self-assemblies, and single-handed helical carbonaceous nanotubes were then obtained by removal of silica with aqueous HF. Samples were characterized by using field-emission SEM, TEM, X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis, Raman spectroscopy, and circular dichroism. The polysilsesquioxane and carbonaceous structures exhibited optical activity. The walls of the carbon/silica and carbonaceous nanotubes were predominantly amorphous carbon. The surface area of the left-handed, helical, carbonaceous nanotubes was 1439 m(2) g(-1), and such materials have potential applications as catalyst supports, chirality sensors, supercapacitor electrodes, and adsorbents.

Abstract:Silica-coated multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) have been prepared by the sol–gel polymerization of tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) in the presence of the acid-oxidized MWCNTs at room temperature, followed by oxidizing the MWCNTs templates at high temperature in air to produce hollow silica nanotubes. The thickness and architectures of silica shell were well controlled by rationally adjusting the concentration of TEOS, and by adding cationic surfactant as a structure-directing agent. These results also give a clear answer to prove the fact that the structures of spherical silica particles can be fully “copied” to the coating shell and the wall of silica nanotubes when prepared by the same method as the synthesis of silica particles in the presence of templates.

Abstract:The solvent-free nonionic nanofluid hybrid material consisting of multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) and silica nanoparticles is prepared by a facile route. The content of MWNTs/silica nanoparticles is up to 31 wt %. The hybrid material exhibits liquid-like behavior in the absence of solvent at 45 degrees C, which is a wax solid at room temperature. The process of melting and solidification is reversible over many cycles.

Abstract:A secondary ammonium hydrochloride of the peptidic lipid, in which the L-prolyl-L-prolyl-L-proline fragment is coupled with an L-glutamate derivative carrying two long alkyl chains, self-assembles in water to form nanotube structures and acts as a template to transcribe them to silica nanotubes through sol-gel reaction. When the peptidic lipids self-assemble in mixtures of ethanol and water, the resultant self-assembled structures showed notable morphological changes from tubular structures with different diameters to spherical ones. Using the obtained self-assembled structures as templates in different ethanol/water mixtures, we carried out the sol-gel reaction of tetraethoxysilane (TEOS). The obtained silica structures gave tubular structures with different diameters of 80, 50, and 30 nm and hollow spheres, just corresponding to the morphological change in the self-assembled templates. We thus controlled the diameters and dimensions of the silica nanotubes, which depend on the ethanol volume fractions. In addition, we have also performed in situ control of silica tubular morphologies by the addition of ethanol in a silica/lipid xerogel state, producing a unique tube-in-tube structure.

Abstract:A novel approach was employed in the fabrication of silica nanocubes with controlled size and shape. The silica nanocubes were highly dispersed with width of about 30 nm and product with high purity. A small amount of tartaric acid was introduced in the TEOS hydrolysis process. In this work tartaric acid as the organic template, was formed on the surface of hydrous silica colloidal particles. The organic template ordered by carboxyl, led to the self-assembly of amorphous silica sol encapsulated into cubic matrixes, and the organic template was packed into 3D structure.

Abstract:Monodisperse silica particles containing available active C=C bonds were directly prepared by a simple two-step sol-gel method. In the first step the hydrolysis of vinyltrimethoxysilane (VTMS) was performed under acidic conditions in an aqueous solution. In the second step the condensation of the siloxane precursors progressed under basic conditions, resulting in production of silica nanoparticles containing available active C=C bonds. The products were characterized using SEM and FTIR.

Abstract:The aggregation behavior of a novel histidine derivative surfactant N-dodecanoyl-L-histidine (DHis) in aqueous solution was investigated. By mixing with cationic/anionic surfactant, an interesting phase transition over time from transparent homogeneous solution to jelly and finally to fibrous floccules was observed with aggregates growth taken place in the systems. Making use of the growing fibrous structures in the DHis/DTEAB and DHis/SDS systems as surface charge tunable dynamic template, we achieved sol-gel replication of silica and titania nanotubes in mild conditions, respectively. The possible mechanism underlying the formation of silica nanotubes was proved to be synergistically self-catalyzed hydrolysis and condensation of silica precursors depositing on the template surface. In particular, by optimizing the sol-gel process, silica nanotubes with tunable sizes in diameter and uniform wall thickness could be obtained in high yield. The large specific surface area and peculiar photoluminescence property of the silica nanomaterials indicated that the synthetic nanotubes were well-defined in both morphology and physical properties. Importantly, this fibrous aggregates could be universally used in opposite charged inorganic precursors to accomplish inorganic oxide nanotubes via sol-gel replication process, which may provide a general route for the construction of one-dimensional nanostructures in aqueous media.

Abstract:Cationic cyclo(dipeptide) gelators 10mimClO(4), 11mimClO(4), and 11pyClO(4) were synthesized as templates for the sol-gel transcription reaction of alkoxysilanes. They were able to cause physical opaque gels in alcohols such as methanol, ethanol, and 1-propanol. Three-dimensional fibrous networks responsible for physical gelation were found in SEM images of gels. Sol-gel transcription reactions using the self-assemblies of three gelators as the templates were carried out in the presence of propylamine as a catalyst. When tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) was selected as a precursor, three kinds of morphologies, such as inner-helical nanotubes, right-handed nanobundles, and right-handed helical nanosprings were observed by electron microscopy. The helical nanosprings were preferentially formed as compared with nanotubes and nanobundles. On the other hand, the sol-gel polymerization of bis(triethoxysilyl)methane, 1,2-bis(triethoxysilyl)ethane, and 1,4-bis(triethoxysilyl)benzene as precursors gave nanoballs instead of tubular structures. When tetrabutylammonium fluoride (TBAF) was used as a catalyst, a helical tubular structure coated by silica nanoballs was identified.

Abstract:Herein, one-dimensional double helix is fabricated via supramolecular self-assembly of a sugar-based amphiphile, which can be utilized as soft template to synthesize silica double helices and nanotubes through sol−gel reaction of tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS). The self-assembled double helix can be rationally transformed into nonhelical fibers with the aid of conventional ionic surfactants. It is suggested that the introduction of ionic surfactant will impart electrostatic repulsion inside double helix and shape double helices into nanofibers. Interestingly the nonhelical fibers coassembled by C4AG and cationic surfactants have been proven to direct the preparation of single-stranded helical SiO2 through sol−gel polycondensation. This is the first time that both double and single-stranded silica helix have been created in one system.

Abstract:A chiral cationic gelator derived from L-alanine was synthesized. Sol-gel transcriptions were carried out to control mesoporous silica nanostructures using the organic self-assemblies of this gelator as templates. It was found that the morphologies of the obtained mesoporous silicas were sensitive to stirring time. With increasing the stirring time, the morphologies of mesoporous silicas changed from nanotubes constructed by double twisted nanoribbons to those constructed by single-strip coiled nanoribbons. The diameters of the nanotubes increased from 80 to 400 nm. This result indicated that the formation of the nanotubes following a dynamic templating process. For a better understanding the pore architectures, the TEM images of the mesoporous silicas were simulated using the 3D studio MAX software.
