Abstract:The research methods of Cohesive Zone Model (CZM) are introduced and the parameters of cohesive zone model in ABAQUS software are calibrated based on the cohesive constitutive model determined by the fracture energy. Besides adopting exponential cohesive zone model, this paper applies a bilinear one to simulate the crack propagation of a simply supported single-edge notched concrete beams SE(B) (Mode I) and make comparisons with experimental result. Finally, the results represent effectiveness of the effective modulus and the special advantage in term of failure of fracture based on the cohesive zone model, which is of directly guiding significance for achieving a deep going understanding of crack propagation.

Abstract:The coalescence of collinear cracks in a quasi-brittle material is investigated using the Dugdale–Barenblatt-type cohesive damage zone model. In the case of plane stress, two collinear cracks and a periodic row of collinear cracks with equal length are considered. Instead of the fracture criteria in terms of stress intensity factor or crack tip opening displacement, the length of damage localization band is adopted as the control parameter to determine the crack propagation in a quasi-brittle material. The crack coalescence is attributable to two reasons, namely, the unstable crack propagation due to the high level of the applied stress and the linking of damage localization bands. The conditions of crack coalescence are given based on the analysis of the two mechanisms.

Abstract:Abstract This paper presents a method to simulate fracture propagation in a damage zone in 2D, whereby Cohesive Zone (CZ) elements are assigned the same Continuum Damage Mechanics (CDM) model as their adjacent finite elements. Material hardening is a result of damage‐induced stiffness reduction in the finite and cohesive elements, while softening is modeled by cohesive debonding only. The damage components calculated at the numerical integration points of each finite element are averaged and that average is assigned to the nodes of the adjacent CZ elements. CZ element debonding triggers when a critical damage threshold is reached, beyond which, a linear softening law is used in both mode I and mode II. The proposed model is calibrated against published triaxial compression tests conducted on shale. Single‐CZ element simulations confirm that, below the critical damage threshold, elastic deformation energy is stored and energy is dissipated by damage propagation and irreversible deformation. Passed the critical damage threshold, stored elastic energy is released in the form of cohesive debonding energy. Borehole breakout simulations indicate that the proposed CDM‐based CZ model can predict the formation of spiral‐shaped fractures around a free circular cavity under biaxial stress. Simulations of fracture propagation in textured materials suggest that cohesive debonding within and between grains is triggered by the coalescence of localized zones of continuum damage, and that the grain size distribution affects both the fracture pattern and the softening behavior of the specimen considered.

Abstract:In the present paper, a micromechanically based damage model for microcrack-weakened solids is developed. The concept of the domain of microcrack growth (DMG) is defined and used to describe the damage state and the anisotropic properties of brittle materials. After choosing an appropriate fracture criterion of microcrack, we obtain the analytical expression of DMG under a monotonically increasing proportional plane stress. Under a complex loading path, the evolution equation of DMG and the overall effective compliance tensor of damaged materials are given.

Abstract:Fully automatic finite element (FE) modelling of the fracture process in quasi-brittle materials such as concrete and rocks and ductile materials such as metals and alloys, is of great significance in assessing structural integrity and presents tremendous challenges to the engineering community. One challenge lies in the adoption of an objective and effective crack propagation criterion. This paper proposes a crack propagation criterion based on the principle of energy conservation and the cohesive zone model (CZM). The virtual crack extension technique is used to calculate the differential terms in the criterion. A fully-automatic discrete crack modelling methodology, integrating the developed criterion, the CZM to model the crack, a simple remeshing procedure to accommodate crack propagation, the J2 flow theory implemented within the incremental plasticity framework to model the ductile materials, and a local arc-length solver to the nonlinear equation system, is developed and implemented in an in-house program. Three examples, i.e., a plain concrete beam with a single shear crack, a reinforced concrete (RC) beam with multiple cracks and a compact-tension steel specimen, are simulated. Good agreement between numerical predictions and experimental data is found, which demonstrates the applicability of the criterion to both quasi-brittle and ductile materials.

Abstract:Tensile cracks significantly influence stability of mining, tunneling, and other geotechnical engineering scenarios. Discontinuous deformation analysis (DDA) is widely employed to analyze, predict, and prevent the deformation and progressive failure of such geomaterials. However, an accurate and efficient simulation of the cracking process remains a challenge, requiring appropriate fracture models. This study presents an improved DDA algorithm featuring a nonlinear cohesive zone model (CZM) designed for the intricate deformation and fragmentation analysis of geotechnical structures composed of quasi-brittle materials. Building upon fracture mechanics theory, an exponential-type CZM that accounts for both post-peak softening behaviors and nonlinear relations inherent in quasi-brittle materials is introduced. This exponential-type CZM is integrated into the original DDA method, addressing the co-edge blocks connected with cohesive springs. The ensuing unbalanced force in normal contact arising from the nonlinear cohesive spring is mitigated using a nonlinear iterative algorithm. The formulation, the implementation, and the iteration of the exponential-type CZM within the DDA framework are elucidated. Finally, the feasibility and the accuracy of the improved DDA for analyzing quasi-brittle crack propagation are demonstrated and validated by comparing several examples with experimental and numerical results.

Abstract:The collective dislocation behavior near a crack tip in a ductile layer sandwiched between two brittle solids is analyzed via two-dimensional dislocation dynamics (DD) simulations that incorporate a cohesive zone (CZ) model. The cohesive crack tip is treated as part of a much larger finite crack confined in the ductile layer. The underlying boundary value problem is formulated with a set of boundary integral equations and numerically evaluated with a collocation method. The fracture energy of the layered composite material is shown to be strongly correlated with the layer thickness and is directly influenced by the cohesive strength of the ductile layer (Hsia KJ et al. (1994) J Mech Phys Solids 6 877–896).

Abstract: In this chapter, special aspects of brittle damage mechanics are considered, related to the various frameworks by which the behavior of a brittle damaged material can be postulated, still considering the damaged medium as a global continuum. The basic framework of CDM is recalled, stressing the concepts of effective stress and the ways of introducing coupling between damage and brittle behavior. Particular attention is paid to problems related to initial or induced anisotropy and the unilateral character of the brittle damage. Coupling between damage and plasticity is not discussed herein. The materials concerned are rock, concrete, considered initially isotropic and composite, in particular ceramic matrix composites. Some specific models are developed, taking into consideration scalar damage variables for initially anisotropic brittle materials.

Abstract:Using the analysis method of the Dugdale-Barenblatt model and considering the rapid stress drop and strain softening of material, the fracture process zone at the near tip of a mode-I crack in a brittle damaged material is studied. It is pointed out that under external loads a narrow strip zone of damage localization, i.e. a damage localization band, will form ahead of the crack and it is impossible that a complete damage zone with a finite width occurs around the crack tip. A central crack and semi-infinite crack in infinite sheets have been taken as examples; the relations between the length of the damage localization band and external loads are obtained. The structures of crack tip fields in a brittle damaged material are shown.

Abstract:The combination of phenomenological and micromechanical damage mechanics is a promising path to construct an applicable damage model with firm physical foundation. In this paper, a quasi-micromechanical model is presented for microcrack-weakened brittle or quasi-brittle materials. The microcracking damage is characterized in terms of the orientation domain of microcrack growth (DMG) as well as a scalar microcrack density parameter. The DMG describes the complex damage and its evolution associated with microcrack growth, while the scalar microcrack density factor defining the isotropic part of damage yields an easy calculation of the effects of microcrack interaction on effective elastic moduli. The conventional methods for estimating the effective moduli of microcracked solids, based on the concept of effective medium or effective field, are formulated in a universal framework. A novel and efficient scheme is suggested to calculate the microcrack interaction effects on the effective elastic moduli in a very convenient manner. Thereby, a quasi-micromechanical model is established to simulate the constitutive response of microcrack-weakened brittle or quasi-brittle materials under complex loading. Considering various micromechanisms of microcracking damage, the overall effective constitutive relation for different stages including linear elasticity, pre-peak non-linear hardening, stress drop and strain softening are expressed in a unified form.

Abstract:This paper summarises our recent efforts on finite element modelling of complex 2D and 3D fracture in quasi-brittle materials considering random heterogeneous fracture properties, using a simple yet effective method developed in associated with Abaqus. In this method, potential cracks are represented by pre-inserted cohesive elements with traction-separation softening constitutive laws modelled by spatially-varying Weibull random fields. Extensive Monte Carlo simulations of small-sized concrete specimens under uni-axial tension were carried out. It is found that the developed method is able to predict realistic 2D and 3D crack propagation processes and excellent load-displacement curves with little mesh-dependence. It provides a potentially powerful tool to assess reliability of existing structures against external loadings.

Abstract:This article addresses several issues in damage micromechanics for microcracked brittle or quasi-brittle solids, with major attention paid on summarizing some recent works of the present authors. First, we discuss the methods for characterizing evolutionary damage of microcracks and introduce the concept of orientation domain of microcrack growth. Second, we describe how to calculate the macroscopically effective constitutive relation of microcracking solids under complex loading. Third, the effective medium or effective field methods for estimating the effective elastic moduli of microcracked solids are formulated into a universal framework. Fourth, a subregion method is suggested to calculate the effective elastic moduli, fracture strength, and failure process of solids containing a large number and/or a high density of microcracks. Additionally, this method is combined with the finite element method to simulate the damage evolution and failure process of engineering structures.

Abstract:Steady-state moving crack under mode-I loading is studied with a modified cohesive zone model which addresses speed-dependent role of the normal stress parallel to the crack axis and the non-uniformity of traction force in cohesive zone. Unlike the classical Dugdale model which predicts independence of the cohesive zone size on crack speed, the present model predicts that the cohesive zone size strongly depends on crack speed. Comparison with some known experimental data suggests that the present model has the potential to capture the speed effects on moving cracks in ductile materials especially at high crack speed. Abstract:Computational modeling of three-dimensional crack propagation in very ductile materials is still a challenge in fracture mechanics analysis. In the present work a new stress-triaxiality-dependent cohesive zone model (TCZM) is proposed to describe elastic-plastic fracture process in full three-dimensional specimens. The cohesive parameters are identified as a function of the stress triaxiality from ductile fracture experiments. The predictions of TCZM show good agreement with the experimental results for both side-grooved C(T) specimen and rod bar specimen.
A damage mechanics model for quasi brittle materials based on the structured deformation theory

Abstract:The structured deformation theory is used within the thermodynamics of irreversible processes framework in order to build a damage model relevant for quasi-brittle materials. The cracks are supposed smeared in the body and their shape is assumed to be sinusoidal. The convex of elasticity supposes a limitation of the thermodynamic force associated to the relative sliding of the crack lips. This limitation consists of both some equivalent to the Coulomb's friction and a cohesive force issued from the Barenblatt approach. This leads to an initial yield surface that can be expressed as the Mohr-Coulomb criterion, known to be relevant for such materials in term of initial yield surface and prediction of the crack orientation. The evolution law introduces an hardening and softening function that, combined to the rest of the framework, allows the description of the stress to strain evolution. The results are identified and compared to the Kupfer's database on concrete.

Abstract:A cyclic cohesive zone model (CZM) combined with the extended finite element method for the fatigue crack initiation and propagation in ductile materials was investigated under different loading conditions in C(T) specimens. Detailed experimental verification confirmed the known CZM could not predict effects of the loading ratio in fatigue crack properly. Including the loading ratio into the damage evolution equation described the loading ratio correctly. The CZM was used to predict both fatigue crack nucleation and propagation in a deep notched C(T) specimen. The simulations displayed reasonable agreement with experimental data in the stable stage of fatigue crack propagation and showed the potential for a unified description of fatigue crack nucleation and growth.

Abstract:In the present paper, ductile crack growth in an aluminium alloy is numerically simulated using a cohesive zone model under both plane stress and plane strain conditions for two different fracture types, shear and normal modes. The cohesive law for ductile fracture consists of two parts-a specific material's separation traction and energy. Both are assumed to be constant during ductile fracture (stable crack growth). In order to verify the assumed cohesive law to be suitable for ductile fracture processes, experimental records are used as control curves for the numerical simulations. For a constant separation traction, determined experimentally from tension rest data, the corresponding cohesive energy was determined by finite element calculations. It is confirmed that the cohesive zone model can be used to characterize a single ductile fracture mode and is roughly independent of stable crack extention, Both the cohesive traction and the cohesive fracture energy should be material specific parameters. The extension of the cohesive zone is restricted to a very small region near the crack tip and is in the order of the physical fracture process. Based on the present observations, the cohesive zone model is a promising criterion to characterize ductile fracture.

Abstract:In engineering materials such as cast iron and concrete,there is a fracture process zone in the crack front and it exists micro and macro defect and energy dissipation,so its quasi-brittle fracture performance prevail.The damage development area is simplified into virtual crack,and crack cohesive stress distribution and opening displacement or deformation exist among it.In order to explore the constitutive relation of crack opening displacement and stress of cohesive crack in quasi brittle materials,cast iron and concrete were used to test their fracture process and micro view experiment.By the analytical method of applied mathematics mechanics,the material deformation stress constitutive relations were obtained for the crack development zone.And,based on the mechanical model and double K fracture criterion,the estimate calculation of structure bearing capacity with crack was also given in the paper.The theoretical calculation and test results are basically identical./r/n

Abstract:We formulate a nonlocal cohesive model for calculating the deformation state inside a cracking body. In this model a more complete set of physical properties including elastic and softening behavior are assigned to each point in the medium. We work within the small deformation setting and use the peridynamic formulation. Here strains are calculated as difference quotients. The constitutive relation is given by a nonlocal cohesive law relating force to strain. At each instant of the evolution we identify a process zone where strains lie above a threshold value. Perturbation analysis shows that jump discontinuities within the process zone can become unstable and grow. We derive an explicit inequality that shows that the size of the process zone is controlled by the ratio given by the length scale of nonlocal interaction divided by the characteristic dimension of the sample. The process zone is shown to concentrate on a set of zero volume in the limit where the length scale of nonlocal interaction vanishes with respect to the size of the domain. In this limit the dynamic evolution is seen to have bounded linear elastic energy and Griffith surface energy. The limit dynamics corresponds to the simultaneous evolution of linear elastic displacement and the fracture set across which the displacement is discontinuous. We conclude illustrating how the approach developed here can be applied to limits of dynamics associated with other energies that $\Gamma$- converge to the Griffith fracture energy.
