Abstract:Extrusion of foods is an emerging technology for the food industries to process and market a large number of products of varying size, shape, texture, and taste. Extrusion cooking technology has led to production of wide variety of products like pasta, breakfast cereals, bread crumbs, biscuits, crackers, croutons, baby foods, snack foods, confectionery items, chewing gum, texturized vegetable protein (TVP), modified starch, pet foods, dried soups, dry beverage mixes etc. The functional properties of extruded foods plays an important role for their acceptability which include water absorption, water solubility, oil absorption indexes, expansion index, bulk density and viscosity of the dough. The aim of this review is to give the detailed outlines about the potential of extrusion technology in development of different types of products and the role of extrusion-operating conditions and their effect on product development resulting in quality changes i.e physical, chemical, and nutritional, experienced during the extrusion process.

Abstract:Objective To study the effects of forming parameters on the macro deformation uniformity of the thin-walled aluminum parts during multi- pass spinning process. Methods The influences of spinning gap δ,feed rate f,and spin roller fillet radius R on the quality of the part surface and the uniformity of wall thickness were experimentally investigated in the formation process of thin- walled aluminum parts using double wheeled spinning machine. Results All thress forming parameters had influence on the quality of the part surface and the uniformity of wall thickness. Conclusion The results showed that the surface quality,size precision and thickness uniformity of the parts were improved by decreasing the spinning gap δ,or using a higher spindle speed S with a lower feed rate f. And a bigger spin roller fillet radius also resulted in much more uniform deformation.

Abstract:In the internal thread extrusion forming, if the process parameters are not selected properly, the extrusion torque will increase, the extrusion temperature will be too high, or even the tap will break. In order to obtain effective process parameters under certain working conditions, this paper uses a combination of numerical simulation and process experiment to analyze the influence of the bottom hole diameter, extrusion speed, and friction factor on the extrusion torque and extrusion temperature. Through an orthogonal experiment, the significant influence law of different process parameters on the extrusion torque and extrusion temperature was studied, and the order of their influence was determined. Based on the optimal process parameters, numerical simulations and process tests were carried out, and the extrusion effect and related parameters were compared and analyzed. The results show that the extruded thread has clear contour, uniform tooth pitch, complete tooth shape, and good flatness. Compared with before optimization, the maximum extrusion torque has been reduced by 37.15%, the maximum temperature has been reduced by 29.72%, and the extrusion quality has been improved. It shows that the optimized method and optimized process parameters have good engineering practicability.

Abstract:The process parameters influencing mechanical properties of ABS/aluminum injection products were researched by orthogonal experiment.The parameters included melt temperature,holding time,packing pressure,injection pressure and high flash aluminum content,etc.According to the experimental results,influences of tensile strength and impact strength were analyzed by orthogonal multi-index comprehensive analytic,and the better process parameter was obtained.The results showed that melt temperature and aluminum powder content were the main influence factors to the mechanical properties.

Abstract:Due to the availability of materials and low cost for production, fused deposition modeling is becoming the most widely used additive manufacturing (AM) technology. However, the reasonable choice of process parameters for FDM is a significant task that directly affects the performance of the printed part. Therefore, it is necessary to investigate the influences of various process parameters on the quality characteristics of the components. The objectives of this study are to thoroughly review the current state of research that characterizes, estimates the effects of process parameters on mechanical properties, and summarizes the conclusions of existing works. In addition, some general issues of the presented research are summarized, and the need for future development is also emphasized. Finally, the research proposes several areas that deserve further study in this field.

Abstract:3D printing is a promising technique to fabricate flexible parts and reduce the supply chain. Various materials, such as metal powders, plastics, ultraviolet (UV) sensitive resins, can be fabricated from 3D printing and form the final printed part. Currently, most researchers either focus on exploring printable materials with good property or focus on the process quality control given a certain type of material. However, for many 3D printing processes, the printing process and product properties are dependent on both the material properties and process settings. To the best of the authors' knowledge, the quantitative analysis of the interactions of material properties and printing process settings are rarely studied. In this paper, we treat the material preparation and 3D printing as different manufacturing stages, and we explore the multi-stage effects in 3D printing. In particular, we add carbon fiber to the CLEAR resin to alter the material properties for a stereolithography (SLA) 3D printing process. It is observed that the part properties are jointly affected by material properties and printing process settings. Therefore, the material property and process settings should be jointly considered for optimizing 3D printing processes.

Abstract:By designing several extrusion parameters, the Mg-0.12Ca-0.08Ba (wt%) alloy with dilute alloy content was processed, the microstructure and tensile property of alloys have been reasonably examined by means of electron backscattered diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. The results demonstrate the grains of Mg-0.12Ca-0.08Ba alloys are refined after extrusion, and the alloys form uniform dynamic recrystallized grains. There are two different types of texture components in the extruded alloy, rare earth texture and extruded fiber texture, which crystallographic orientation is < 112>∥ED and <100>∥ED, respectively. This “rare earth texture” component was found to be suppressed at high extrusion temperatures. The extrudants at 380 °C exhibits the best performance, its yield strength (YS) and ultimate tensile strength (UTS) are 197 MPa and 252 MPa, respectively, and the elongation-to-fracture (EL) is 33.1%. The plastic enhancement after extrusion mainly comes from grain refinement and texture weakening in the alloys.

Abstract:Additive Manufacturing (AM), commonly known as "3D printing", is rapidly integrated into many various fields, from everyday commercial to high-end medical and aerospace. Its production flexibility in small-scale and complex shapes is a significant advantage over conventional methods. However, inferior physical properties of parts manufactured by AM in general, and by material extrusion in particular, compared to traditional fabrication methods, inhibit its full assimilation. Specifically, the mechanical properties of printed parts are not high enough and, more importantly, not consistent enough. Optimization of the many various printing parameters is therefore required. This work reviews the influence of material selection, printing parameters such as path (e.g., layer thickness and raster angle), build (e.g., infill and building orientation) and temperature parameters (e.g., nozzle or platform temperature) on mechanical properties. Moreover, this work focuses on the interactions between the printing parameters, their mechanisms, and the statistical methods required to identify such interactions. Choosing the right parameters can increase mechanical properties by up to 60% (raster angle and orientation build), or render other parameters insignificant (material selection), while specific settings of certain parameters can completely inverse the influence trend of other parameters. Finally, trends for future research are suggested.

Abstract:As a major polymer processing technique, polymer,extrusion is a continuous process, during which material properties, machine variables, and process variables interact with each other to determine the final product quality., Precise control of key process variables such as barrel temperatures and melt pressure are crucial to ensure a good product quality in the extrusion process. In this paper, the overall extruder control system is constructed by two independent control loops, a single-input single-output (SISO) control of the melt pressure at die output, and a multiinput-multioutput (MIMO) control of the barrel temperatures. The dynamic behaviors of melt pressure and barrel temperatures were analyzed first. The characteristics of the melt pressure dynamics were as follows: nonlinear and time-varying while the extruder barrel temperatures were nonlinear, slow response, and different zones were highly coupled. Advanced control algorithms were adopted to control these key variables. Experimental results demonstrate the fast response, near-zero overshoot, and precise tracking performance of the proposed control strategies. The robustness of the entire control system was verified through different operating conditions including materials and set points. Ultimately the performance of the entire control system was verified by product quality. The product quality improved significantly with the proposed controller.
Effects of manufacturing process and surface treatments on mechanical properties of PLA/SCF composites using extrusion printing

Abstract:Short carbon fiber (SCF) reinforced polylactic acid (PLA) composites were fabricated by extrusion printing, and the effects of process parameters and surface treatments on the mechanical properties of composites were studied. Based on the rheological properties of composites and the extrusion process simulation, pure PLA specimens and PLA/SCF specimens were manufactured under different printing parameters. Three kinds of surface treatment were adopted to improve the mechanical properties. The experimental results show that SCF can effectively improve the tensile strength and bending strength, but the compressive strength decreased. The specimen had the best mechanical properties when the layer height was 0.1 mm and the nozzle diameter was 0.6 mm. The mechanical properties can be further improved by coupling agent coating method, and the compressive strength was even higher than that of pure PLA specimen. The research in this paper can provide a reference for the fabrication of thermoplastic composites with excellent mechanical properties by extrusion printing.

Abstract:Extrusion is a widely adaptable food processing method, capable of efficiently generating a diverse range of food products. Extrusion enhances soluble dietary fibers (SDFs) and improves nutritional qualities from plant resources like fruits, vegetables, cereals, pseudo-cereals, and pulses. This review describes the current state of the art in dietary fiber (DF) extrusion process, machines, and product quality. Abstract:Rice is one of the major cereal crops that act as an attractive material for the manufacture of ready-to-cook (RTC) products like pasta, noodles, ready-to-eat (RTE) breakfast cereals, modified starch, weaning foods, snack foods, pet foods, and dried soup, because of its colour, bland taste, flavour as well as good processing characteristics. Extrusion is the most versatile processing technology used in the food industry to develop the product having better nutritional, functional and sensory characteristics. This technique enables the control of the different processes like mixing, heating, cooking, shearing, and shaping of products. This review highlights the research work on the use of extrusion process technology to produce rice and rice-based products. The extrusion process parameters namely feed moisture, barrel temperature, screw speed, and feed rate markedly affect the product quality and their acceptability among consumers. Emphasis has been given on the effects of feed mixture composition or ingredients and the extrusion process parameters on physicochemical, textural, pasting, thermal and nutritional properties of the rice extrudates.

Abstract:The present study designed a set of extrusion dies with unequal bearing lengths to investigate the extrusion deformation behavior of 2195 Al–Li alloy. With the standard deviation of the velocity field (SDV) and extrusion force as optimization objectives, the extrusion process parameters (billet temperature, die temperature and extrusion speed) were optimized using Taguchi method and orthogonal test. The results indicate that billet temperature is the most significant factor affecting SDV and extrusion force, with a range of 1.287 and 7.076, respectively. Furthermore, the optimal extrusion parameters were determined as billet temperature 420 °C, die temperature 410 °C and extrusion speed 0.2 mm/s, resulting in the SDV value of 0.3345 and the extrusion force of 17.059 MN. The grains on the extruded profile were flattened and elongated both in the extrusion direction and cross-section, showing obvious ∥TD and ∥TD preferred orientation, and discontinuous dynamic recrystallization (DDRX) and geometric dynamic recrystallization (GDRX) mostly occurred, but no significant differences in grain size were observed, thus verifying the accuracy of the numerical simulation. Additionally, the ultimate tensile strength, yield strength and elongation of the extruded profile reached 437.1 MPa, 345.9 MPa and 11.7%, respectively.

Abstract:Tensile strength of sheet material was studied using orthogonal experiment.Test data obtained were fitted and optimized by using Matlab.The 3D map and contour map of the rotating speed,feeding speed and processing temperature on the tensile strength of sheet material was obtained.The mathematical models between independent and objective parameters were established.According to the mathematical models,graphical user interfaces were designed by using LabVIEW programming,through which human-computer interaction was realized and the product quality can be predicted scientifically and accurately.The purpose was to provide reference for production and practice.
Study on Design and Optimization Techniques of Parison Thickness for Extrusion Blow Molding

Abstract:The parison thickness for extrusion blow molding has direct effects on the manufacturing cost of hollow plastic parts. A new method of computer aided design for parison thickness was presented based on Catmull-Rom spline, which used geometric continuity of the Catmull-Rom spline, and operated curves by a set of control vertices and a set of shape parameter values. In order to satisfy the requirements of good continuity and fast-respondability of the parison thickness controlling, a new algorithm of adaptive data sampling based on curvature was proposed. Based on elasticity finite elements method analysis, the parison inflation in the plastics extrusion blow molding was simulated, and the optimal shape of parison thickness had achieved. Experimental results indicate that this technology makes it easier to edit and revise the values of parison thickness, and can obtain values of superior quality and performance. Human - machine interface software of the parison thickness control system was developed, and applied in the extrusion blow production activity. The results show the utility of this technology.
Effects of Extrusion Processing Conditions on the Physico-Chemical Properties of Mung Bean Extrudates

Abstract:Mung bean is rich in starch, protein, vitamins, and the starch contains 32-35% amylose. For this purpose, mung bean is often used in the manufacturing of traditional food. Extrusion processing is a high pressure short time (HTST) technology with many advantages, including high productivity and low cost. For this purpose, extrusion processing technique would be applied to manufacture mung bean extrudates with high functional properties in this research. The domestic Tainan No.5 mung bean was used as material in this research, to produce mung bean extrudates by single screw extruder at different screw speed (20, 30, 40 rpm) and barrel temperature (90 °C, 100 °C), then the physico-chemical properties (moisture content, color, water activity, thermal property and resistant starch content) were also analyzed. The results showed that no significant difference was found in moisture content and water activity after extrusion processing and storage. As to the color, the L value decreased with the increasing of storage time. In addition, the degree of gelatinization was not affected by screw speed and barrel temperature. The resistant starch content increased with the increasing of storage time at barrel temperature 90 °C, but at barrel temperature 100 °C was not.

Abstract:Abstract Extrusion cooking is commonly used to produce dry pet foods. As a process involving heat treatment, extrusion cooking can have both beneficial and detrimental effects on the nutritional quality of the product. Desirable effects of extrusion comprise increase in palatability, destruction of undesirable nutritionally active factors and improvement in digestibility and utilisation of proteins and starch. Undesirable effects of extrusion include reduction of protein quality due to e.g. the Maillard reaction, decrease in palatability and loss of heat‐labile vitamins. Effects of extrusion processing on the nutritional values of feeds for livestock have been well documented. Literature results concerning effects of extrusion on dry pet foods, however, are scarce. The present review discusses the results of studies investigating the impact of extrusion cooking on the nutritional quality of dry pet foods. Copyright © 2008 Society of Chemical Industry

Abstract:Satisfying the nutritional requirements of consumers has made food industries focus on the development of safe, innocuous, easy-to-prepare products with high nutritional quality through efficient processing technologies. Extrusion cooking has emerged as a prominent technology associated with the nutritional and functional attributes of food products. This review aims to establish a theoretical framework concerning the influence of extrusion parameters on the functional and nutritional properties of precooked or instant flours, both as end-products and ingredients. It highlights the pivotal role of process parameters within the extruder, including temperature, screw speed, and raw materials moisture content, among others, and elucidates their correlation with the modifications observed in the structural composition of these materials. Such modifications subsequently induce notable changes in the ultimate characteristics of the food product. Detailed insights into these transformations are provided within the subsequent sections, emphasizing their associations with critical phenomena such as nutrient availability, starch gelatinization, protein denaturation, enhanced in vitro digestibility, reduction in the content of antinutritional factors (ANFs), and the occurrence of Maillard reactions during specific processing stages. Drawing upon insights from available literature, it is concluded that these effects represent key attributes intertwined with the nutritional properties of the end-product during the production of instant flours.
