Abstract:Modified styrene-acrylic emulsion was prepared. FT-IR spectra of the emulsion demonstrated that epoxy involved in the reaction; Particle size analysis showed that the mean particle diameter was 123 nm and 84 % was between 91 nm and 160 nm; Also fundamental performance was tested.

Abstract:Styrene/Acrylonitrile/N-Phenlymaleimide emulsion copolymerization was studied using sodium dodecyl sulfate as emulsifier and potas- sium persulphate as initiator.The effects of monomers ratio,emulsifier and initiator concentration on the polyresction and the product were investigat ed.It showed that the PMI content in the copolymer is important to the character of the copolymer,and for the copolymerization,the suitable reaction condition were:the emulsifier 13-15 mmol/L and the initiator 1.8～2.4 mmol/L.

Abstract:Cationic styrene-acrylate latex as surface sizing agent had been prepared with the emulsion polymerization by use of styrene, dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate, 2-ethylhexyl acrylate, modified PVA 0588 as the emulsifiers. The infrared spectrum of copolymer and particle size and physical properties were separately determined. The results indicated that the obtained copolymer emulsion was very stable, the average molecular weight of copolymer approached about 45000 g/mol and polydispersity index was 1.6. The copolymer with higher quaternization degree had smaller particle size and narrower particle distribution when initiator had the same usage. The copolymer as surface sizing agent improved the hydrophobicity of paper, the water-proofing time approached 14.7 seconds, the copolymer with narrow particle distribution increased 7% sizing performance than the one with wide particle distribution.

Abstract:The copolymer emulsion of polyurethane-acrylate-vinyltriethoxysilane(KH570) was prepared with sodium laurylsulfate and OP-10 as emulsifiers by pre-emulsion process.The structure of copolymer and latex particle morphology were characterized by IR and TEM.The influence of amount of KH-570,temperature and pH value on copolymerization rate was discussed.The results showed that the copolymer contains siloxane groups and the latex particles ranged from 50～100 nm.The conversion rate decrease with increase of the quantity of KH-570 and decrease of the temperature.Incorporation of KH-570 can improve the water resistance of the coatings film significantly.

Abstract:We designed and used a cyclohexenyl-functionalized amphiphilic macromolecular reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer (macro-RAFT) agent as surfactant and polymerization mediator for (mini) emulsion polymerization of styrene (St), aiming at synthesizing nanoparticles with vinyl-enriched surface and well-defined polymer chains. Unexpectedly, the pendent cyclohexenyl units in the macro-RAFT agent were found to undergo significant copolymerization with St exclusively during the nucleation period in the ab initio emulsion polymerization, leading to the consumption of cyclohexenyl groups, positive deviation of molecular weights, and broad molecular weight distributions. By contrast, in miniemulsion polymerization, the radical polymerization exhibited superb selectivity toward St monomers relative to the pendent cyclohexene vinyl units just as in the solution polymerization. The obtained polymer chains retained designed molecular weights, low polydispersity indexes, and quantitative cyclohexenyl functionalities confined to the particle surface. Thus, PSt particles with vinyl-enriched surface were obtained via miniemulsion polymerization.

Abstract:Water-soluble acrylic-styrene resin which can be used as a dispersant in water-based ink with average molecular weight Mn between 3,000 to 6,000 and narrow molecular weight distribution, was synthesized through semi-batch solution polymerization process, adopting α-methyl styrene as one of the comonomers. Temperature, type of initiators, molecular regulator, addition time of monomers were investigated in terms of monomer conversion, molecular weight and its distribution. The compositions of copolymer were characterized, using FT-IR, DSC.

Abstract:A series of stable alkoxysilane-modified acrylate latexes with various alkoxysilane fractions were synthesized by miniemulsion polymerization. A small fraction of alkoxysilane side groups were incorporated into acrylic main chains via copolymerization. The hydroxyl oligomer alkoxysilane was grafted to the main chains via the condensation reaction of the hydroxyl groups with hydrolyzed alkxoysilane groups. It was found that: (1) γ-methacryl oxypropyl trimethoxysilane (MPMS) was a better alkoxysilane comonomer than vinyltriethoxysilane (VTES) in terms of colloid stability during polymerization and the hydrophobic property of the resulted polymer coating; (2) when MPMS was used, the colloid stability was very good either during polymerization or in storage; (3) the oligomer alkoxysilane was grafting onto with a grafted degree around 50%; (4) the oligomer alkoxysilane dramatically increased the hydrophobic property of the resulted coating. The water contact angle increased from 75° to 95° with 10% (mass) oligomer alkoxysilane and further up to 105° with 20% (mass) oiligomer alkoxysilane.

Abstract:With styrene (St), butyl acrylate (BA), and methyl methacrylate (MMA) as monomers, a core-shell structure was utilized to synthesize a polymerization emulsion. Then, self-crosslinked polyacrylic acid emulsions with different crosslinking degrees were synthesized by changing the amount of DAAM using deception acrylamide (DAAM) and adipic acid dihydrazide (ADH) as functional monomers. The basic performance tests demonstrated that the inclusion of DAAM resulted in an increase in the emulsion's stability and film's solvent resistance; The DSC test demonstrated that boosting the crosslinking degree was advantageous in improving the T g of the film; according to FT-IR and microscopic tests, the crosslinking reaction took place in the system. The self-crosslinking acrylic emulsion of this system has a certain application prospect as a binder.

Abstract:Graphene (GE) was modified with oleic acid/sodium dodecyl sulfate (OA-SDS-GE), then the acrylic emulsion nanocomposites containing OA-SDS-GE were prepared via pre-emulsification and semi-continuous seed emulsion polymerization, by adjusting the proportions of monomers, such as styrene (St), methyl methacrylate (MMA), butyl acrylate (BA) and acrylic acid (AA), and using ammonium persulfate (APS) and sodium bicarbonate as the initiators, and the compounded emulsifiers. The structure, particle morphology and performance of the nanocomposites were studied, and the results showed that the emulsion with high solid content (42％) had better mechanical and dilution stability, the average particle size and polydispersity index (PDI) measured by PCS were 102.3 nm and 0.007, respectively. The TGA results revealed that the OA-SDS-GE/styrene-acrylic emulsion nanocomposites were thermally stable, and the 5％ and 10％thermal decomposition temperatures under N2 atmosphere were 351.0℃ and 376.2℃, respectively. The nanocomposites had a surface resistivity of 7.9×108 Ω after film formation and the film antistatic property was good.

Abstract:Ab initio RAFT emulsion copolymerization of styrene (St) and acrylonitrile (AN) was investigated by using poly(acrylic acid)(20)-b-polystyrene(5) trithiocarbonate as surfactant and RAFT agent. The well-controlled polymerization in terms of linear growth of molecular weight, low PDI, and little coagulum could be achieved only when the mass ratio m(St)/m(AN) was greater than 1:1 and suitable polymerization temperature depending on the monomer ratios. A significant amount of coagulum was formed when more AN was used. The gel effect, which led to the diffusion-controlled RAFT addition reactions in the late stage of the polymerization, played a significant influence on the PDI, the degree of which was highly dependent on the targeted molecular weight and monomer compositions. For the copolymerization of styrene and acrylonitrile with the azeotropic composition (75 wt % styrene), the gel effect could be relieved by increasing the reaction temperature from 70 to 90 degrees C after the nucleation period, resulting in PDI as low as 1.20. However, in the cases of the higher AN composition, the gel effect was still pronounced. Unexpectedly, the particle number was insensitive to the RAFT agent concentrations.
Synthesis of Organosilicone-Modified Styrene-Acrylate Microemulsions by Ultraviolet-Photopolymerization

Abstract:Organosilicone-modified styrene-acrylate microemulsions were prepared by ultraviolet-photopolymerization using butyl acrylate(BA)and styrene(St)as monomers,γ-methacryloxypropyl-trimethoxysilane(KH570)as coupling agent and crosslinker,sodium dodecyl sulfate(SDS)as surfactant,1-pentanol as cosurfactant,and benzophenone dipheny1 ketone and Michler's ketone as photoinitiators.Both acid and base resistances of organosilicone-modified styrene-acrylate microemulsions were studied.FTIR,TEM,UV-Vis spectrophotometer and TG analyzer were used to characterize the structures,morphologies,and optical and thermal properties of organosilicone-modified styrene-acrylate microemulsions.It is better in acid resistance than in base resistance.The transmittance of transparent or semi-transparent organosilicone-modified styrene-acrylate microemulsions are 55% and 87% at 550 nm and 760 nm,respectively.The particle sizes of nanolatex particles are between 34 nm and 55 nm with size distribution index of 1.16-1.18.FTIR showed the characteristic absorption peaks assigned to corresponding units in the copolymers,which indicated structure of organosilicone-modified styrene-butyl acrylate copolymers.

Abstract:The morphology of an anionic emulsifier/long chain fatty alcohol complex and its change during the formation process were studied. The main factors affecting the morphology, such as various types of anionic emulsifiers and fatty alcohols, their molar ratios and the addition of styrene, were investigated. It was discovered that the rod-like particles of the complex had a length of 0.1-0.2 mum and diameter of 0.01-0.02 mum. A model of a rod-like particle or molecular aggregate was proposed. Both water-soluble and oil-soluble initiators were used to study the kinetics of styrene mini-emulsion polymerization and polystyrene latex size characteristics.

Abstract:In this work polystyrene/polyacrylate emulsions were obtained by a semi-continuous, seeded emulsion polymerization using methyl methacrylate (MMA), butyl acrylate (BA), butyl methacrylate (BMA), styrene (St) and 2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl acetoacetate (AAEM) as monomers and polyether amine (D400) as crosslinker. The emulsion films were obtained by self-crosslinking of the emulsion at ambient temperature, and their mechanical and damping behaviors were investigated. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) confirmed that crosslinking reactions between the acetoacetate groups of AAEM and amino groups of D400 had occurred and formed the C = C-N crosslinked structure. Moreover, tensile tests verified that the tensile strength of the film was significantly improved by the crosslinked structure, and its maximum reached 6.5 MPa, 211% higher than that of the uncrosslinked film. Besides, dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) indicated that the crosslinking increased the glass transition temperature (Tg) and the corresponding activation energy ( Eα ) of the films. The results showed that the polystyrene/polyacrylate emulsion with 5 wt% AAEM and 3 wt% D400 possessed satisfying mechanical and damping properties. This work provides a reference for synthesizing self-crosslinking polystyrene/polyacrylate emulsions at ambient temperature.

Abstract:Styrene–acrylic emulsions containing hydroxyl functional monomer unit’s component are widely used for maintenance coating. In this paper, a stable emulsifier-free styrene–acrylic emulsion with solid content over 43% could be obtained in 210 min via reverse iodine transfer polymerization (RITP). By adding a mixture of methacrylic acid (MAA) and poly(ethylene glycol)methyl ether methacrylate (PEGMA) into a system containing a high content of hydroxyl functional monomer component (19.4 wt.% of the total monomer mass), styrene (St) could be copolymerized with methyl methacrylate (MMA); the modified film exhibited good hardness properties, good adhesive properties, and low water absorption. An increase in the amount of PEGMA decreased the glass transition temperature (Tg). When 1.4 times the reference amount of initiator was added, the highest molecular weight Mn could reach 40,000 g.·mol−1 with 0.25 times the reference amount of iodine in the emulsion. The largest tensile strength of the dried emulsion film over 5.5 MPa endowed the material with good mechanical properties. Living polymerization was proven by the kinetics of RITP emulsion and chain extension reaction. TEM micrographs manifest the emulsification of the seed random copolymer. This paper may provide a potential methodology for preparing polymer materials with excellent mechanical properties.

Abstract:Styrene/butyl acrylate/crosslinker emulsion copolymerization was studied using sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate (SDBS) as emulsifier, potassium persulfate (KPS) as initiator and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA) and polybutadiene rubber (PB) as crosslinker. Effects of monomers ratio, reaction temperature, emulsifier concentration and initiator concentration on the rate of copolymerization were investigated. Experimental results showed that overall apparent activation energy of the copolymerization system was 70.67 kJ/mol, the rate of copolymerization had a direct ratio to power of 0.43 of emulsifier, power of 0.56 of initiator as well as power of 0.49 of monomer butyl acrylate.

Abstract:To improve the weather ability and thermal stability of styrene-acrylic polymer emulsion coatings, a series of novel styrene-acrylic polymer emulsion modified with 2-[2-hydroxy-5-[2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl]phenyl]-2H-benzotriazole (HMEB), hexafluorobutyl methacrylate (HFMA), and vinyl-trimethoxysilane (VTMS) were prepared through semi-continuous seed emulsion polymerization. The emulsions and their coatings were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, ultraviolet absorption spectroscopy (UV-Vis), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, dynamic laser scattering, transmission electron microscopy, zeta potential, thermogravimetric analysis, and artificially accelerated aging test. According to the results, the new polymer emulsion had superior UV absorption from 308 to 364 nm. Moreover, the coating performed the best anti-aging stability when the content of HMEB, HFMA, and VTMS reached 4%, 2%, and 3%, respectively. After the 1000 h aging test, the color difference (ΔE) and rate of loss of gloss (ΔG) were only 6.86% and 51.10%, while the unmodified coatings were 16.05% and 72.22%, respectively. Furthermore, the thermal stability and water resistance of the coating were improved by fluorine and silicon monomers. The initial decomposition temperature was increased from 327 to 339°C. Moreover, the UV stabilization mechanism is preliminarily discussed.

Abstract:To improve the stability of waterborne epoxy–acrylic emulsions and their comprehensive properties, such as the chemical resistance of coatings, a new research idea is proposed in this paper. First, a series of high-molecular-weight epoxy resins were synthesized with epoxy resin E-51 and bisphenol A (BPA) using benzyl triphenyl phosphine bromide as the catalyst. Then, free-radical graft copolymerization was carried out between the epoxy resin and methacrylic acid (MAA), styrene (ST), and butyl acrylate (BA) using benzoyl peroxide (BPO) as the initiator. This method ensured that the epoxy groups were retained. Finally, the carboxylic acid groups were neutralized with N,N-dimethylethanolamine (DMEA), and a stable aqueous epoxy–acrylic emulsion was obtained by high-speed dispersion in deionized water. The effects of key factors such as temperature, time, the molecular weight and dosage of epoxy resin, the dosage of MAA, the dosage of BPO, and the neutralization degree of the synthesis of emulsions and coating film properties were mainly discussed. The molecular weight and molecular weight distribution of the epoxy resin were determined by gel permeation chromatography (GPC). The epoxy resin and its graft copolymer were analyzed and characterized by Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The particle size and distribution of the emulsions were tested by laser particle size analysis. The morphology of the emulsion particles was observed by transmission electron microscopy. The results showed that the acrylic monomers (MAA, ST, and BA) were grafted onto the epoxy resin. The graft copolymers showed higher glass transition temperatures compared with those of the pure epoxy resin. TGA showed that the graft copolymer started to decompose at a high temperature before the pure epoxy resin did, and the thermal stability was slightly reduced. The prepared emulsions with a particle size of 160 nm had a storage stability of more than one year and showed excellent dilution stability, mechanical stability, and freeze–thaw stability. The emulsions were coated and cured at 150 °C for 1 h with a pencil hardness of 5 H, an adhesion of grade 1, and a flexibility of 1 mm. The water resistance was >60 days, the salt water resistance was >30 days, the acid resistance was >10 days, and the alkali resistance was >5 days.
