Exponential Erdős-Szekeres theorem for matrices

Abstract:In 1993, Fishburn and Graham established the following qualitative extension of the classical Erdős-Szekeres theorem. If $N$ is sufficiently large with respect to $n$, then any $N\times N$ real matrix contains an $n\times n$ submatrix in which every row and every column is monotone. We prove that the smallest such $N$ is at most $2^{n^{4+o(1)}}$, greatly improving the previously best known double-exponential upper bound, and getting close to the best known lower bound $n^{n/2}$. In particular, we prove the following surprising sharp transition in the asymmetric setting. On one hand, every $8n^2\times 2^{n^{4+o(1)}}$ matrix contains an $n\times n$ submatrix, in which every row is mononote. On the other hand, there exist $n^{2}/6\times 2^{2^{n^{1-o(1)}}}$ matrices containing no such submatrix .

Abstract:Motivated by the fundamental lower bounds questions in proof complexity, we initiate the study of matrix identities as hard instances for strong proof systems. A matrix identity of $d \times d$ matrices over a field $\mathbb{F}$, is a non-commutative polynomial $f(x_1,\ldots,x_n)$ over $\mathbb{F}$ such that $f$ vanishes on every $d \times d$ matrix assignment to its variables. We focus on arithmetic proofs, which are proofs of polynomial identities operating with arithmetic circuits and whose axioms are the polynomial-ring axioms (these proofs serve as an algebraic analogue of the Extended Frege propositional proof system; and over $GF(2)$ they constitute formally a sub-system of Extended Frege [HT12]). We introduce a decreasing in strength hierarchy of proof systems within arithmetic proofs, in which the $d$th level is a sound and complete proof system for proving $d \times d$ matrix identities (over a given field). For each level $d>2$ in the hierarchy, we establish a proof-size lower bound in terms of the number of variables in the matrix identity proved: we show the existence of a family of matrix identities $f_n$ with $n$ variables, such that any proof of $f_n=0$ requires $\Omega(n^{2d})$ number of lines. The lower bound argument uses fundamental results from the theory of algebras with polynomial identities together with a generalization of the arguments in [Hru11]. We then set out to study matrix identities as hard instances for (full) arithmetic proofs. We present two conjectures, one about non-commutative arithmetic circuit complexity and the other about proof complexity, under which up to exponential-size lower bounds on arithmetic proofs (in terms of the arithmetic circuit size of the identities proved) hold. Finally, we discuss the applicability of our approach to strong propositional proof systems such as Extended Frege.
Tight general bounds for the extremal numbers of 0-1 matrices

Abstract:A zero-one matrix $M$ is said to contain another zero-one matrix $A$ if we can delete some rows and columns of $M$ and replace some $1$-entries with $0$-entries such that the resulting matrix is $A$. The extremal number of $A$, denoted $\operatorname{ex}(n,A)$, is the maximum number of $1$-entries that an $n\times n$ zero-one matrix can have without containing $A$. The systematic study of this function for various patterns $A$ goes back to the work of Füredi and Hajnal from 1992, and the field has many connections to other areas of mathematics and theoretical computer science. The problem has been particularly extensively studied for so-called acyclic matrices, but very little is known about the general case (that is, the case where $A$ is not necessarily acyclic). We prove the first asymptotically tight general result by showing that if $A$ has at most $t$ $1$-entries in every row, then $\operatorname{ex}(n,A)\leq n^{2-1/t+o(1)}$. This verifies a conjecture of Methuku and Tomon.

Abstract:We introduce the concept of stable index for 0-1 matrices. Let $A$ be a 0-1 square matrix. If $A^k$ is a 0-1 matrix for every positive integer $k$, then the stable index of $A$ is defined to be infinity; otherwise, the stable index of $A$ is defined to be the smallest positive integer $k$ such that $A^{k+1}$ is not a 0-1 matrix. We determine the maximum finite stable index of all 0-1 matrices of order $n$ as well as the matrices attaining the maximum finite stable index.

Abstract:This paper deduces exponential matrix concentration from a Poincaré inequality via a short, conceptual argument. Among other examples, this theory applies to matrix-valued functions of a uniformly log-concave random vector. The proof relies on the subadditivity of Poincaré inequalities and a chain rule inequality for the trace of the matrix Dirichlet form. It also uses a symmetrization technique to avoid difficulties associated with a direct extension of the classic scalar argument.

Abstract:The binary rank of a 0,1 matrix is the smallest size of a partition of its ones into monochromatic combinatorial rectangles. A matrix M is called (k1,...,km;n1,...,nm) circulant block diagonal if it is a block matrix with m diagonal blocks, such that for each i∈[m], the ith diagonal block of M is the circulant matrix whose first row has ki ones followed by ni−ki zeros, and all of whose other entries are zeros. In this work, we study the binary rank of these matrices as well as the binary rank of their complement, obtained by replacing the zeros by ones and the ones by zeros. In particular, we compare the binary rank of these matrices to their rank over the reals, which forms a lower bound on the former.We present a general method for proving upper bounds on the binary rank of block matrices that have diagonal blocks of some specified structure and ones elsewhere. Using this method, we prove that the binary rank of the complement of a (k1,...,km;n1,...,nm) circulant block diagonal matrix for integers satisfying ni>ki>0 for each i∈[m] exceeds its real rank by no more than the maximum of gcd⁡(ni,ki)−1 over all i∈[m]. We further present several sufficient conditions for the binary rank of these matrices to strictly exceed their real rank. By combining the upper and lower bounds, we determine the exact binary rank of various families of matrices and, in addition, significantly generalize a result of Gregory (J. Comb. Math. & Comb. Comp., 1989).Motivated by a question of Pullman (Linear Algebra Appl., 1988), we study the binary rank of k-regular 0,1 matrices, those having precisely k ones in every row and column, and the binary rank of their complement. As an application of our results on circulant block diagonal matrices, we show that for every k≥2, there exist k-regular 0,1 matrices whose binary rank is strictly larger than that of their complement. Furthermore, we exactly determine for every integer r, the smallest possible binary rank of the complement of a 2-regular 0,1 matrix with binary rank r.

Abstract:Utilizing two very well known inequalities, we present a sequence of progressively better upper bounds for the Perron root of a nonnegative matrix. Each element in the sequence is a function of the Perron root of the arithmetic symmetrization of a power of matrix. The results are better than one obtained by utilizing the theorem of A. Brauer.

Abstract:The permanent of a multidimensional matrix is the sum of products of entries over all diagonals. By Minc's conjecture, there exists a reachable upper bound on the permanent of 2-dimensional (0,1)-matrices. In this paper we obtain some generalizations of Minc's conjecture to the multidimensional case. For this purpose we prove and compare several bounds on the permanent of multidimensional (0,1)-matrices. Most estimates can be used for matrices with nonnegative bounded entries.

On the size of integer programs with bounded non-vanishing subdeterminants

Abstract:Motivated by complexity questions in integer programming, this paper aims to contribute to the understanding of combinatorial properties of integer matrices of row rank $r$ and with bounded subdeterminants. In particular, we study the column number question for integer matrices whose every $r \times r$ minor is non-zero and bounded by a fixed constant $\Delta$ in absolute value. Approaching the problem in two different ways, one that uses results from coding theory, and the other from the geometry of numbers, we obtain linear and asymptotically sublinear upper bounds on the maximal number of columns of such matrices, respectively. We complement these results by lower bound constructions, matching the linear upper bound for $r=2$, and a discussion of a computational approach to determine the maximal number of columns for small parameters $\Delta$ and $r$.
