Abstract:We estimate the frequency of singular matrices and of matrices of a given rank whose entries are parametrised by arbitrary polynomials over the integers and modulo a prime $p$. In particular, in the integer case, we improve a recent bound of V. Blomer and J. Li (2022).

Abstract:SIAM Journal on Discrete Mathematics, Volume 38, Issue 1, Page 1-18, March 2024. An integer matrix [math] is [math]-modular if the determinant of each [math] submatrix of [math] has absolute value at most [math]. The study of [math]-modular matrices appears in the theory of integer programming, where an open conjecture is whether integer programs defined by [math]-modular constraint matrices can be solved in polynomial time if [math] is considered constant. The conjecture is known to hold true only when [math]. In light of this conjecture, a natural question is to understand structural properties of [math]-modular matrices. We consider the column number question, how many nonzero, pairwise nonparallel columns can a rank-[math] [math]-modular matrix have? We prove that for each positive integer [math] and sufficiently large integer [math], every rank-[math] [math]-modular matrix has at most [math] nonzero, pairwise nonparallel columns, which is tight up to the term [math]. This is the first upper bound of the form [math] with [math] a polynomial function. Underlying our results is a partial list of matrices that cannot exist in a [math]-modular matrix. We believe this partial list may be of independent interest in future studies of [math]-modular matrices.

Abstract:We determine the rank of a random matrix over an arbitrary field with prescribed numbers of non-zero entries in each row and column. As an application we obtain a formula for the rate of low-density parity check codes. This formula vindicates a conjecture of Lelarge (2013). The proofs are based on coupling arguments and a novel random perturbation, applicable to any matrix, that diminishes the number of short linear relations.

Abstract:Given a set $X$ of $n\times n$ matrices and a positive integer $m$, we consider the problem of estimating the cardinalities of the product sets $A_1 \dotsc A_m$, where $A_i\in X$. When $X=\mathcal M_n(\mathbb{Z};H)$, the set of $n\times n$ matrices with integer elements of size at most $H$, we give several bounds on the cardinalities of the product sets. Related to this result, we also give some bounds on the cardinalities of the set of solutions of the related equations such as $A_1 \dotsc A_m=C$ and $A_1 \dotsc A_m=B_1 \dotsc B_m$. We also consider the case where $X$ is the subset of matrices in $\mathcal M_n(\mathbb{F})$, where $\mathbb{F}$ is a field, with bounded rank $k\leq n$. In this case, we completely classify the related product set.

Abstract:We propose an efficiently verifiable lower bound on the rank of a sparse fully indecomposable square matrix that contains two non-zero entries in each row and each column. The rank of this matrix is equal to its order or differs from it by one. Bases of a special type are constructed in the spaces of quadratic forms in a fixed number of variables. The existence of these bases allows us to substantiate a heuristic algorithm for recognizing whether a given affine subspace passes through a vertex of a multidimensional unit cube. In the worst case, the algorithm may output a computation denial warning; however, for the general subspace of sufficiently small dimension, it correctly rejects the input. The algorithm is implemented in Python. The running time of its implementation is estimated in the process of testing.

Abstract:We found a lower bound on the rank of a square matrix where every entry in the leading diagonal is neither zero nor one and every entry outside the leading diagonal is either zero or one. The rank of this matrix is at least half its order. Under an additional condition, the lower bound is higher by one. This condition means that some auxiliary system of linear equations has no binary solution. Some examples are provided that show that the lower bound can be achieved. This lower bound on the matrix rank allows the problem of finding a binary solution to a system of linear equations with a sufficiently large number of linearly independent equations to be reduced to a similar problem in a smaller number of variables. Restrictions on the existence of a large set of solutions are found, each differing from the binary one by the value of one variable. In addition, we discuss the possibility of certifying the absence of a binary solution to a large system of linear algebraic equations. Estimates of the time required for calculating the matrix rank in the SymPy computer algebra system are also provided. It is shown that the rank of a matrix over the field of residues modulo prime number is calculated faster than it generally takes to calculate the rank of a matrix of the same order over the field of rational numbers.

Abstract:We consider the set $\mathcal{M}_n(\mathbb Z; H)$ of $n\times n$-matrices with integer elements of size at most $H$ and obtain a new upper bound on the number of matrices from $\mathcal{M}_n(\mathbb Z; H)$ with a given characteristic polynomial $f \in \mathbb Z[X]$, which is uniform with respect to $f$. This complements the asymptotic formula of A. Eskin, S. Mozes and N. Shah (1996) in which $f$ has to be fixed and irreducible. Using this result, among others, we obtain upper and lower bounds on the number of $s$-tuples of matrices from $\mathcal{M}_n(\mathbb Z; H)$, satisfying various multiplicative relations, including multiplicative dependence and bounded generation of a subgroup of $\mathrm{GL}_n(\mathbb Q)$. These problems generalise those studied in the scalar case $n=1$ by F. Pappalardi, M. Sha, I. E. Shparlinski and C. L. Stewart (2018) with an obvious distinction due to the non-commutativity of matrices. Motivated by these problems, we also prove various properties of the variety of complex matrices with fixed characteristic polynomial, including computing the degree of this variety.

On the complexity of matrix Putinar's Positivstellensatz

Abstract:This paper studies the complexity of matrix Putinar's Positivstellensatz on the semialgebraic set that is given by the polynomial matrix inequality. Under the archimedeanness, we prove a polynomial bound on degrees of terms appearing in the representation of matrix Putinar's Positivstellensatz. Estimates on the exponent and constant are given. As a byproduct, a polynomial bound on the convergence rate of matrix sum-of-squares relaxations is obtained, which resolves an open question raised by Dinh and Pham. When the constraining set is unbounded (the archimedeanness fails), we also prove a similar bound for the matrix version of Putinar--Vasilescu's Positivstellensatz by exploiting homogenization techniques.

On Matrices over a Polynomial Ring with Restricted Subdeterminants

Abstract:This paper introduces a framework to study discrete optimization problems which are parametric in the following sense: their constraint matrices correspond to matrices over the ring $\mathbb{Z}[x]$ of polynomials in one variable. We investigate in particular matrices whose subdeterminants all lie in a fixed set $S\subseteq\mathbb{Z}[x]$. Such matrices, which we call totally $S$-modular matrices, are closed with respect to taking submatrices, so it is natural to look at minimally non-totally $S$-modular matrices which we call forbidden minors for $S$. Among other results, we prove that if $S$ is finite, then the set of all determinants attained by a forbidden minor for $S$ is also finite. Specializing to the integers, we subsequently obtain the following positive complexity result: the recognition problem for totally $\pm\{0,1,a,a+1,2a+1\}$-modular matrices with $a\in\mathbb{Z}\backslash\{-3,-2,1,2\}$ and the integer linear optimization problem for totally $\pm\{ 0,a,a+1,2a+1\}$-modular matrices with $a\in\mathbb{Z}\backslash\{ -2,1\}$ can be solved in polynomial time.

Abstract:For every $p\leq n$ positive integer we obtain the lower bound $(3-\frac{1}{p+1})n^2-\big(2\binom{2p}{p+1}-\binom{2p-2}{p-1}+2\big)n$ for the rank of the $n\times n$ matrix multiplication. This bound improves the previous one $(3-\frac{1}{p+1})n^2-\big(1+2p\binom{2p}{p}\big)n$ due to Landsberg. Furthermore our bound improves the classic bound $\frac{5}{2}n^2-3n$, due to Bl\"aser, for every $n\geq 132$. Finally, for $p = 2$, with a sligtly different strategy we menage to obtain the lower bound $\frac{8}{3}n^2-7n$ which improves Bl\"aser's bound for any $n\geq 24$.
On affine spaces of rectangular matrices with constant rank

Abstract:Let $\mathbb{F}$ be a field, and $n \geq p \geq r>0$ be integers. In a recent article, Rubei has determined, when $\mathbb{F}$ is the field of real numbers, the greatest possible dimension for an affine subspace of $n$--by--$p$ matrices with entries in $\mathbb{F}$ in which all the elements have rank $r$. In this note, we generalize her result to an arbitrary field with more than $r+1$ elements, and we classify the spaces that reach the maximal dimension as a function of the classification of the affine subspaces of invertible matrices of $\mathrm{M}_s(\mathbb{F})$ with dimension $\dbinom{s}{2}$. The latter is known to be connected to the classification of nonisotropic quadratic forms over $\mathbb{F}$ up to congruence.

Abstract:We show that if $A$ is an $n\times n$-matrix, then the diagonal entries of each power $A^{m}$ are uniquely determined by the principal minors of $A$, and can be written as universal (integral) polynomials in the latter. Furthermore, if the latter all equal $1$, then so do the former. These results are inspired by Problem B5 on the Putnam contest 2021, and shed a new light on the behavior of minors under matrix multiplication.

Abstract:Let {\mathcal B} be a linear space of matrices over a field {\mathbb spanned by n\times n matrices B_1, \dots, B_m. The non-commutative rank of {\mathcal B}$ is the minimum r\in {\mathbb N} such that there exists U\leq {\mathbb F}^n satisfying \dim(U)-\dim( {\mathcal B} (U))\geq n-r, where {\mathcal B}(U):={\mathrm span}(\cup_{i\in[m]} B_i(U)). Computing the non-commutative rank generalizes some well-known problems including the bipartite graph maximum matching problem and the linear matroid intersection problem. In this paper we give a deterministic polynomial-time algorithm to compute the non-commutative rank over any field {\mathbb F}. Prior to our work, such an algorithm was only known over the rational number field {\mathbb Q}, a result due to Garg et al, [GGOW]. Our algorithm is constructive and produces a witness certifying the non-commutative rank, a feature that is missing in the algorithm from [GGOW]. Our result is built on techniques which we developed in a previous paper [IQS1], with a new reduction procedure that helps to keep the blow-up parameter small. There are two ways to realize this reduction. The first involves constructivizing a key result of Derksen and Makam [DM2] which they developed in order to prove that the null cone of matrix semi-invariants is cut out by generators whose degree is polynomial in the size of the matrices involved. We also give a second, simpler method to achieve this. This gives another proof of the polynomial upper bound on the degree of the generators cutting out the null cone of matrix semi-invariants. Both the invariant-theoretic result and the algorithmic result rely crucially on the regularity lemma proved in [IQS1]. In this paper we improve on the constructive version of the regularity lemma from [IQS1] by removing a technical coprime condition that was assumed there.

Let p(x1,...,xm) be a polynomial with zero constant term in non-commutative variables over an algebraically closed field K . Suppose that 1≤r≤n−1 , where r is the order of p . Then p(Tn(K)) is a dense subset of Tn(K)(r−1) (with respect to the Zariski topology). This is a solution of a problem presented by Gargate and de Mello and a supplement to a result obtained by Panja and Prasad in 2023.
