Abstract:Motivated by the fundamental lower bounds questions in proof complexity, we initiate the study of matrix identities as hard instances for strong proof systems. A matrix identity of $d \times d$ matrices over a field $\mathbb{F}$, is a non-commutative polynomial $f(x_1,\ldots,x_n)$ over $\mathbb{F}$ such that $f$ vanishes on every $d \times d$ matrix assignment to its variables. We focus on arithmetic proofs, which are proofs of polynomial identities operating with arithmetic circuits and whose axioms are the polynomial-ring axioms (these proofs serve as an algebraic analogue of the Extended Frege propositional proof system; and over $GF(2)$ they constitute formally a sub-system of Extended Frege [HT12]). We introduce a decreasing in strength hierarchy of proof systems within arithmetic proofs, in which the $d$th level is a sound and complete proof system for proving $d \times d$ matrix identities (over a given field). For each level $d>2$ in the hierarchy, we establish a proof-size lower bound in terms of the number of variables in the matrix identity proved: we show the existence of a family of matrix identities $f_n$ with $n$ variables, such that any proof of $f_n=0$ requires $\Omega(n^{2d})$ number of lines. The lower bound argument uses fundamental results from the theory of algebras with polynomial identities together with a generalization of the arguments in [Hru11]. We then set out to study matrix identities as hard instances for (full) arithmetic proofs. We present two conjectures, one about non-commutative arithmetic circuit complexity and the other about proof complexity, under which up to exponential-size lower bounds on arithmetic proofs (in terms of the arithmetic circuit size of the identities proved) hold. Finally, we discuss the applicability of our approach to strong propositional proof systems such as Extended Frege.
A Method for Determining the Affine Equivalence of Boolean Functions

Abstract:Determining the affine equivalence of Boolean functions has significant applications in circuit and cryptography. Previous methods for determining this require a large amount of computation when Boolean functions are bent functions or when the truth table is sparse. This paper presents a new method to determine the affine equivalence based on matrix algebra. By transforming Boolean function to the corresponding matrix representation, we first propose and prove the congruent standard form of Boolean function. It lays the foundation for the determination of equivalence because affine Boolean functions must have the same standard form. Then we find the generators of orthogonal matrix group and symplectic matrix group, which greatly reduce the search space. The computation complexity of our method is o(2(r 2/2+n * (n-r) )), where n is the number of bit operations, and r is the rank of the matrix, which is the product of Boolean-1 matrix of the test Boolean function and its transposition. The experimental results show that our method is useful when the test Boolean function is no more than 7 bits and r is greater than 2.
Boolean Matching Reversible Circuits: Algorithm and Complexity

Abstract:Boolean matching is an important problem in logic synthesis and verification. Despite being well-studied for conventional Boolean circuits, its treatment for reversible logic circuits remains largely, if not completely, missing. This work provides the first such study. Given two (black-box) reversible logic circuits that are promised to be matchable, we check their equivalences under various input/output negation and permutation conditions subject to the availability/unavailability of their inverse circuits. Notably, among other results, we show that the equivalence up to input negation and permutation is solvable in quantum polynomial time, while its classical complexity is exponential. This result is arguably the first demonstration of quantum exponential speedup in solving design automation problems. Also, as a negative result, we show that the equivalence up to both input and output negations is not solvable in quantum polynomial time unless UNIQUE-SAT is, which is unlikely. This work paves the theoretical foundation of Boolean matching reversible circuits for potential applications, e.g., in quantum circuit synthesis.

Abstract:SIAM Journal on Discrete Mathematics, Volume 38, Issue 1, Page 828-844, March 2024. We introduce the class of strong cocomparability graphs, as the class of reflexive graphs whose adjacency matrix can be rearranged by a simultaneous row and column permutation to avoid the submatrix with rows 01,10, which we call Slash. We provide an ordering characterization, a forbidden structure characterization, and a polynomial-time certifying recognition algorithm for the class. These results complete the picture in which in addition to, or instead of, the [math] matrix one forbids the [math] matrix (which has rows 11,10). It is well known that in these two cases one obtains the class of interval graphs and the class of strongly chordal graphs, respectively. By complementation, we obtain the class of strong comparability graphs, whose adjacency matrix can be rearranged by a simultaneous row and column permutation to avoid the two-by-two identity submatrix. Thus our results give characterizations and algorithms for this class of irreflexive graphs as well. In other words, our results may be interpreted as solving the following problem: given a symmetric 0,1-matrix with 0-diagonal, can the rows and columns of be simultaneously permuted to avoid the two-by-two identity submatrix?

Abstract:A new error bound for the linear complementarity problem is given when the involved matrix is a B-matrix. It is shown that this bound is sharper than some previous bounds [C.Q. Li, Y.T. Li. The Chain Matrix of Bouquets of Geometric Lattices and its Determinant

Abstract:This work builds on Varchenko et al's introduction of bilinear forms for hyperplane arrangements, where the determinant of the associated matrices factorizes into simple components. While one of the determinant formula developed by Varchenko has been generalized to complexes of oriented matroids (COMs) already, this question was open for another, distinct form. Motivated by work from Varchenko and Brylawski, who generalized the alternative bilinear form and its determinant formula from hyperplane arrangements to matroids, we examine whether this formula can similarly be generalized to COMs. Our findings affirm this generalization, and we further extend the determinant formula to bouquets of geometric lattices as introduced by Laurent et al.

Noncommutative Bohnenblust-Hille inequalities

Abstract:Bohnenblust-Hille inequalities for Boolean cubes have been proven with dimension-free constants that grow subexponentially in the degree (Defant et al. in Math Ann 374(1):653-680, 2019). Such inequalities have found great applications in learning low-degree Boolean functions (Eskenazis and Ivanisvili in Proceedings of the 54th annual ACM SIGACT symposium on theory of computing, pp 203-207, 2022). Motivated by learning quantum observables, a qubit analogue of Bohnenblust-Hille inequality for Boolean cubes was recently conjectured in Rouzé et al. (Quantum Talagrand, KKL and Friedgut's theorems and the learnability of quantum Boolean functions, 2022. arXiv preprint arXiv:2209.07279). The conjecture was resolved in Huang et al. (Learning to predict arbitrary quantum processes, 2022. arXiv preprint arXiv:2210.14894). In this paper, we give a new proof of these Bohnenblust-Hille inequalities for qubit system with constants that are dimension-free and of exponential growth in the degree. As a consequence, we obtain a junta theorem for low-degree polynomials. Using similar ideas, we also study learning problems of low degree quantum observables and Bohr's radius phenomenon on quantum Boolean cubes.
On the complexity of matrix Putinar's Positivstellensatz

Abstract:This paper studies the complexity of matrix Putinar's Positivstellensatz on the semialgebraic set that is given by the polynomial matrix inequality. Under the archimedeanness, we prove a polynomial bound on degrees of terms appearing in the representation of matrix Putinar's Positivstellensatz. Estimates on the exponent and constant are given. As a byproduct, a polynomial bound on the convergence rate of matrix sum-of-squares relaxations is obtained, which resolves an open question raised by Dinh and Pham. When the constraining set is unbounded (the archimedeanness fails), we also prove a similar bound for the matrix version of Putinar--Vasilescu's Positivstellensatz by exploiting homogenization techniques.

Abstract:A matrix is blocky if it is a "blowup" of a permutation matrix. The blocky rank of a matrix M is the minimum number of blocky matrices that linearly span M . Hambardzumyan, Hatami and Hatami defined blocky rank and showed that it is connected to communication complexity and operator theory. We describe additional connections to circuit complexity and combinatorics, and we prove upper and lower bounds on blocky rank in various contexts.

Abstract:Supersymmetric particles represent the best motivated candidates to fill the Dark Matter gap, and are actively hunted by a number of competing experiments. Discriminating experiments are testing for the first time SUSY models compatible with accelerator constraints. These experiments contradict the 60 GeV WIMP candidate reported by the DAMA experiment. The sensitivities of direct and indirect detection techniques for both present experiments and future projects are compared.

Abstract:The binary rank of a 0,1 matrix is the smallest size of a partition of its ones into monochromatic combinatorial rectangles. A matrix M is called (k1,...,km;n1,...,nm) circulant block diagonal if it is a block matrix with m diagonal blocks, such that for each i∈[m], the ith diagonal block of M is the circulant matrix whose first row has ki ones followed by ni−ki zeros, and all of whose other entries are zeros. In this work, we study the binary rank of these matrices as well as the binary rank of their complement, obtained by replacing the zeros by ones and the ones by zeros. In particular, we compare the binary rank of these matrices to their rank over the reals, which forms a lower bound on the former.We present a general method for proving upper bounds on the binary rank of block matrices that have diagonal blocks of some specified structure and ones elsewhere. Using this method, we prove that the binary rank of the complement of a (k1,...,km;n1,...,nm) circulant block diagonal matrix for integers satisfying ni>ki>0 for each i∈[m] exceeds its real rank by no more than the maximum of gcd⁡(ni,ki)−1 over all i∈[m]. We further present several sufficient conditions for the binary rank of these matrices to strictly exceed their real rank. By combining the upper and lower bounds, we determine the exact binary rank of various families of matrices and, in addition, significantly generalize a result of Gregory (J. Comb. Math. & Comb. Comp., 1989).Motivated by a question of Pullman (Linear Algebra Appl., 1988), we study the binary rank of k-regular 0,1 matrices, those having precisely k ones in every row and column, and the binary rank of their complement. As an application of our results on circulant block diagonal matrices, we show that for every k≥2, there exist k-regular 0,1 matrices whose binary rank is strictly larger than that of their complement. Furthermore, we exactly determine for every integer r, the smallest possible binary rank of the complement of a 2-regular 0,1 matrix with binary rank r.

The Oracle Complexity of Simplex-based Matrix Games: Linear Separability and Nash Equilibria

Abstract:We study the problem of solving matrix games of the form $\max_{\mathbf{w}\in\mathcal{W}}\min_{\mathbf{p}\in\Delta}\mathbf{p}^{\top}A\mathbf{w}$, where $A$ is some matrix and $\Delta$ is the probability simplex. This problem encapsulates canonical tasks such as finding a linear separator and computing Nash equilibria in zero-sum games. However, perhaps surprisingly, its inherent complexity (as formalized in the standard framework of oracle complexity [Nemirovski and Yudin, 1983]) is not well-understood. In this work, we first identify different oracle models which are implicitly used by prior algorithms, amounting to multiplying the matrix $A$ by a vector from either one or both sides. We then prove complexity lower bounds for algorithms under both access models, which in particular imply a separation between them. Specifically, we start by proving that algorithms for linear separability based on one-sided multiplications must require $\Omega(\gamma_A^{-2})$ iterations, where $\gamma_A$ is the margin, as matched by the Perceptron algorithm. We then prove that accelerated algorithms for this task, which utilize multiplications from both sides, must require $\tilde{\Omega}(\gamma_{A}^{-2/3})$ iterations, establishing the first oracle complexity barrier for such algorithms. Finally, by adapting our lower bound to $\ell_1$ geometry, we prove that computing an $\epsilon$-approximate Nash equilibrium requires $\tilde{\Omega}(\epsilon^{-2/5})$ iterations, which is an exponential improvement over the previously best-known lower bound due to Hadiji et al. [2024].

On the parity complexity measures of Boolean functions

Abstract:The parity decision tree model extends the decision tree model by allowing the computation of a parity function in one step. We prove that the deterministic parity decision tree complexity of any Boolean function is polynomially related to the non-deterministic complexity of the function or its complement. We also show that they are polynomially related to an analogue of the block sensitivity. We further study parity decision trees in their relations with an intermediate variant of the decision trees, as well as with communication complexity.

An Improved Combinatorial Algorithm for Boolean Matrix Multiplication

Abstract:We present a new combinatorial algorithm for triangle finding and Boolean matrix multiplication that runs in $\hat{O}(n^3/\log^4 n)$ time, where the $\hat{O}$ notation suppresses poly(loglog) factors. This improves the previous best combinatorial algorithm by Chan that runs in $\hat{O}(n^3/\log^3 n)$ time. Our algorithm generalizes the divide-and-conquer strategy of Chan's algorithm. Moreover, we propose a general framework for detecting triangles in graphs and computing Boolean matrix multiplication. Roughly speaking, if we can find the "easy parts" of a given instance efficiently, we can solve the whole problem faster than $n^3$.

Abstract:We prove that if R is a principal ideal ring and A\in\M_n(R) is a matrix with trace zero, then A is a commutator, that is, A=XY-YX for some X,Y\in\M_n(R). This generalises the corresponding result over fields due to Albert and Muckenhoupt, as well as that over Z due to Laffey and Reams, and as a by-product we obtain new simplified proofs of these results. We also establish a normal form for similarity classes of matrices over PIDs, generalising a result of Laffey and Reams. This normal form is a main ingredient in the proof of the result on commutators.

Cn?m, the set of all n by m complex matrices, Mosic and Stanimirovic [14] introduced the composite OMP inverse of A by its outer inverse with the prescribed range, null space and Moore-Penrose inverse. This inverse unifies the core inverse, DMP inverse and Moore-Penrose inverse. In this paper, we mainly introduce and investigate a class of generalized inverses in complex matrices. Also, it is proved that this generalized inverse coincides with the OMP inverse. Finally, the defined inverse is related to OMP-inverses, W-core inverses and (b, c)-core inverses in the context of matrices.

Abstract:By the operator of relative complementation is meant a mapping assigning to every element x of an interval [a,b] of a lattice L the set x^{ab} of all relative complements of x in [a,b]. Of course, if L is relatively complemented then x^{ab} is non-empty for each interval [a,b] and every element x belonging to it. We study the question under what condition a complement of x in L induces a relative complement of x in [a,b] It is well-known that this is the case provided L is modular and complemented. However, we present a more general result. Further, we investigate properties of the operator of relative complementation, in particular in the case when the interval [a,b] is a modular sublattice of L or if it is finite. Moreover, we characterize when the operator of relative complementation is involutive and we show a class of lattices where this identity holds. Finally, we establish sufficient conditions under which two different complements of a given element x of [a,b] induce the same relative complement of x in this interval.

Abstract:In this note we give an axiomatization of Boolean algebras based on weakly dicomplemented lattices: an algebra $(L,\wedge,\vee,\tu)$ of type $(2,2,1)$ is a Boolean algebra iff $(L,\wedge,\vee)$ is a non empty lattice and $(x\wedge y)\vee(x\wedge y\tu)=(x\vee y)\wedge(x\vee y\tu)$ for all $x,y\in L$. This provides a unique equation to encode distributivity and complementation on lattices.
