Abstract:In this paper, we first proved a general upper bound k(A)≤(n-i) 2+i for the indices of convergence of reducible Boolean matrices, and give a characterization of those reducible matrices whose indices reach this upper bound. We also discussed the gaps in the set of indices of convergence for reducible matrices.

Abstract:This paper discusses conditions under which the solution of linear system with minimal Schatten- p norm, 0 < p ⩽ 1, is also the lowest-rank solution of this linear system. To study this problem, an important tool is the restricted isometry constant (RIC). Some papers provided the upper bounds of RIC to guarantee that the nuclear-norm minimization stably recovers a low-rank matrix. For example, Fazel improved the upper bounds to δ 4 r A < 0.558 and δ 3 r A < 0.4721, respectively. Recently, the upper bounds of RIC can be improved to δ 2 r A < 0.307. In fact, by using some methods, the upper bounds of RIC can be improved to δ 2 r A < 0.4931 and δ 2 r A < 0.309. In this paper, we focus on the lower bounds of RIC, we show that there exists linear maps A with δ 2 r A > 1/√2 or δ r A > 1/3 for which nuclear norm recovery fail on some matrix with rank at most r . These results indicate that there is only a little limited room for improving the upper bounds for δ 2 r A and δ r A . Furthermore, we also discuss the upper bound of restricted isometry constant associated with linear maps A for Schatten p (0 < p < 1) quasi norm minimization problem.

Abstract:A zero-one matrix $M$ is said to contain another zero-one matrix $A$ if we can delete some rows and columns of $M$ and replace some $1$-entries with $0$-entries such that the resulting matrix is $A$. The extremal number of $A$, denoted $\operatorname{ex}(n,A)$, is the maximum number of $1$-entries that an $n\times n$ zero-one matrix can have without containing $A$. The systematic study of this function for various patterns $A$ goes back to the work of Füredi and Hajnal from 1992, and the field has many connections to other areas of mathematics and theoretical computer science. The problem has been particularly extensively studied for so-called acyclic matrices, but very little is known about the general case (that is, the case where $A$ is not necessarily acyclic). We prove the first asymptotically tight general result by showing that if $A$ has at most $t$ $1$-entries in every row, then $\operatorname{ex}(n,A)\leq n^{2-1/t+o(1)}$. This verifies a conjecture of Methuku and Tomon.

Abstract:As is well known, the Schur complements of strictly or irreducibly diagonally dominant matrices are H-matrices; however, the same is not true of generally diagonally dominant matrices. This paper proposes some conditions on the generally diagonally dominant matrix A and the subset alpha subset of {1, 2, ... , n} so that the Schur complement matrix A/alpha is an H-matrix. These conditions are then applied to decide whether a matrix is irreducible or not.

Abstract:We provide numerical bounds on the Crouzeix ratiofor KLS matrices $A$ which have a line segment on the boundary of the numerical range. The Crouzeix ratio is the supremum over all polynomials $p$ of the spectral norm of $p(A)$ dividedby the maximum absolute value of $p$ on the numerical range of $A$.Our bounds confirm the conjecture that this ratiois less than or equal to $2$. Abstract:We prove a conjecture of Kleinbock which gives a clear-cut classification of all extremal affine subspaces of $\mathbb{R}^n$. We also give an essentially complete classification of all Khintchine type affine subspaces, except for some boundary cases within two logarithmic scales. More general Jarník type theorems are proved as well, sometimes without the monotonicity of the approximation function. These results follow as consequences of our novel estimates for the number of rational points close to an affine subspace in terms of diophantine properties of its defining matrix. Our main tool is the multidimensional large sieve inequality and its dual form.

Exponential Erdős-Szekeres theorem for matrices

Abstract:In 1993, Fishburn and Graham established the following qualitative extension of the classical Erdős-Szekeres theorem. If $N$ is sufficiently large with respect to $n$, then any $N\times N$ real matrix contains an $n\times n$ submatrix in which every row and every column is monotone. We prove that the smallest such $N$ is at most $2^{n^{4+o(1)}}$, greatly improving the previously best known double-exponential upper bound, and getting close to the best known lower bound $n^{n/2}$. In particular, we prove the following surprising sharp transition in the asymmetric setting. On one hand, every $8n^2\times 2^{n^{4+o(1)}}$ matrix contains an $n\times n$ submatrix, in which every row is mononote. On the other hand, there exist $n^{2}/6\times 2^{2^{n^{1-o(1)}}}$ matrices containing no such submatrix .

Abstract:Given a matrix-valued function , where , , and are known matrices, we first review two known fundamental formulas for calculating the maximum and minimum ranks of the matrix-valued function when X runs over . We then establish some new formulas for calculating the maximum and minimum ranks of when X runs over with a restriction by using a simultaneous decomposition of A, B and C, and some tricky matrix operations. Some applications of the rank formulas in completing partially-specified matrices are also given.

Abstract:A 0-1 matrix is d-disjunct if no column is covered by the union of any d other columns. A 0-1 matrix is (d; z)-disjunct if for any column C and any d other columns, there exist at least z rows such that each of them has value 1 at column C and value 0 at all the other d columns. Let t(d, n) and t(d, n; z) denote the minimum number of rows required by a d-disjunct matrix and a (d; z)-disjunct matrix with n columns, respectively. We give a very short proof for the currently best upper bound on t(d, n). We also generalize our method to obtain a new upper bound on t(d, n; z).

Abstract:We prove the existence of a positive semidefinite matrix $A \in \mathbb{R}^{n \times n}$ such that any decomposition into rank-1 matrices has to have factors with a large $\ell^1-$norm, more precisely $$ \sum_{k} x_k x_k^*=A \quad \implies \quad \sum_k \|x_k\|^2_{1} \geq c \sqrt{n} \|A\|_{1},$$ where $c$ is independent of $n$. This provides a lower bound for the Balan--Jiang matrix problem. The construction is probabilistic.
