Abstract:The enhanced Fenton oxidation and biodegradation in an aerobic moving bed biofilm reactor (MBBR) was employed for the treatment of a high concentration refractory antibiotic fermentation wastewater. The raw wastewater was pretreated by coagulation and sedimentation using polymeric iron sulfate (PFS) as the coagulant to remove about 50% of organic loading and to provide the essential Fe2+ for the subsequent Fenton oxidation, which was enhanced by UV irradiation and the addition of oxalic acid to achieve further organic removal and to improve biodegradability of the residual organic constituents for their final removal in the MBBR. The effects of H2O2 and oxalic acid doses on the Fenton treatment and HRT and aeration rate on the MBBR performance are presented. Employing 150 mg/L of H2O2,45 mg/L of oxalic acid, the Fenton oxidation under UV illumination for 1 h at pH 3.0 with aeration to supply the DO,removed 80.9% of COD. After the second stage of sedimentation at pH of 7.0,the supernatant was biotreated in the MBBR (30% filled with the biofilm carrier) operating at a HRT of 12 h and an aeration rate of 0.10 m3/h. The highly effective combined treatment consistently removed >99% COD; the final effluent met the discharge limits of the pharmaceutical industry.
