Abstract:The organic wastewater obtained from pharmaceutical manufacturing laboratory with ultra‐high COD value (>15,000 mg/L) was treated by Fenton and Electrolytic oxidation technology separately. Single factor experiments of Fenton process and Box‐bohnken design (BBD) method for Electrolytic oxidation technology were used to find their optimal conditions. BOD5 was measured to evaluate the biodegradability of the sample. Single pretreatment technology could improve the biodegradability of the organic wastewater a little, but not significantly. The combined sequence of the two technologies, Fenton‐EOT process (Fenton first then Electrolytic), EOT‐Fenton process (Electrolytic first then Fenton), F&E Process (Fenton and Electrolytic oxidation occurred simultaneity) was compared. The Fenton‐EOT process had the highest COD removal efficiency. All the combined processes used in this study could improve the biodegradability of the raw wastewater significantly. Luminous bacteria detection was conducted to measure the biotoxicity of the organic wastewater and the effluents. Fenton‐EOT was the optimal pretreatment process due to its advantages in decreasing the biotoxicity and improving degradability of the raw water. © 2016 American Institute of Chemical Engineers Environ Prog, 35: 772–778, 2016
