Abstract:Compared with traditional processing methods, the severe plastic deformation (SPD) has some advantages. It can produce ultra-fine grain metals or alloys and has a strong impact on the microstructure and mechanical properties of materials. Three principal SPD methods, i.e. accumulative roll bonding, equal channel angular pressing, and high pressure and torsion, as well as the characteristics, present state and perspectives of SPD are summarized in this paper.

Abstract:Processing principles were introduced according to four techniques as follows: equal channel angular pressing(ECAP),cyclic extrusion and compression(CEC),high pressure torsion(HPT) and accumulative roll-bonding(ARB).Research progresses of fabricating aluminum matrix,magnesium matrix and copper matrix ultrafine-grained(UFG) composites by severe plastic deformation(SPD) were systematically discussed.SPD techniques are effective means to refine matrix and homogenize reinforcing phase so as to increase strength,hardness and plasticity.Prospect was also proposed,i.e.,research scope would be widening from nonferrous metals matrix composites to iron matrix,ceramic matrix and polymer matrix composites.

Abstract:The processing principle and classification of severe plastic deformation(SPD)for fabricating bulk nanocrystalline materials are summarized in the present paper.SPD technologies are commonly classified into severe plastic torsion straining(SPTS),equal channel angular pressing or extrusion(ECAP or ECAE)and multi forging ac- cording to the ultra-fining mechanism of processed materials.The shearing mechanism and technique parameters of SPTS and ECAP as well as their advantages and disadvantages are discussed.At the same time,some solutions are brought forward on the basis of above discussions.

Abstract:The research progress on the processing technology of particulate-reinforced Al and Mg matrix composites fabricated by severe plastic deformation is introduced.The structure revolutions during SPD process,such as refinement and redistribution of the reinforced particulates,and ultrafinement of the matrix grains,are summarized.The strengthening and toughening mechanisms,as well as the remarkable enhancement in mechanical properties of the composites after SPD are discussed.In addition,existing problems and development directions for fabricating the particulate-reinforced composite using SPD are also pointed out.

Abstract:The steady state is expected when applying severe plastic deformation (SPD) techniques to process metals. In this study, we propose a method to study the steady state regarding the microstructural features and the mechanical properties, which are verified by the experimental results. More importantly, the initial state of as-prepared metal depending mainly on the processing conditions is critical for the subsequent constitutive relations. Within the framework of dislocation-based crystal plasticity, it is revealed that the dislocation density and flow stress will not change during further deformation when the initial dislocation density is equal to the steady-state value under the loading conditions. In addition, if the initial dislocation density is larger or smaller than the steady-state value, then the dislocation density and flow stress will decrease or increase with increasing strain, and tend to approach the steady-state value. These mechanisms provide not only a physical interpretation for various experimental observations such as near-perfect elastoplasticity, strain hardening and strain softening, but also insightful guidance for investigating the strengthening mechanisms in gradient nano-grained metal produced by SPD.

Abstract:Due to the limitation of huge forming load, inhomogeneity of plastic deformation, and small volume of deformation region, it is difficult to prepare bulk ultra-fine grains material (UFGM) with industry size by the existing severe plastic deformation (SPD) methods. In this study, a novel SPD method, namely 3D-SPD, was proposed. By establishing finite element model, the distribution of material flow, restraining to Mannesmann effect, and comparison of load were discussed. Based on the self-developed rolling mill, the corresponding experiments were conducted. The experimental results reveal that the buck ultra-fine grains material of 45 steel was obtained under the condition of feed angle 21°, cross angle 15°, cone angle 5°, reduction rate 50%, and roll speed 30 rpm. The average grain size was refined from 46 to 0.8–4 μm. The tensile test results indicate that the yield strength and tensile strength of the rolled bar were significantly improved.

Abstract:<p>A novel severe plastic deformation method entitled three dimensional severe plastic deformation was proposed for producing bulk ultrafine-grained materials with industry size. Experiment results of 20MnSiV steel indicate that the ferrite was refined to less than 3 μm after single pass 3D-SPD at 650 °C. The yield strength, ultimate tensile strength and elongation are 491.15 MPa, 626.29 MPa and 20.82%, respectively, which are increased by 28.39%, 3.56% and 10.39% as compared with the received sample. The increase in strength and elongation is related to the grain refinement of ferrite and the hindering effect of spheroidized cementite on dislocations.</p>

Abstract:Al-Mg alloys are widely used as important engineering structural materials in aerospace engineering, transportation systems, and structural constructions due to their low density, high specific strength, corrosion resistance, welding capability, fatigue strength, and cost-effectiveness. However, the conventional Al-Mg alloys can no longer fully satisfy the demands of practical production due to difficulties caused by many defects. The high strength of Al-Mg alloys as non-heat treatment precipitation-strengthened alloys is achieved primarily by solid solution strengthening along with work hardening rather than precipitation strengthening. Therefore, severe plastic deformation (SPD) techniques can be often used to produce ultrafine-grained structures to fabricate ultra-high strength aluminum alloys. However, this approach often achieves the strengthening of material at the cost of reduced ductility. This paper comprehensively summarizes the various approaches of ultrafine/nanocrystalline materials for enhancing their plasticity, elaborates on the creation of a bimodal microstructure within the alloy, and discusses the formation of a nanotwin microstructure within the alloy and the incorporation of dispersed nanoparticles. The mechanisms underlying both the strengthening and toughening during large plastic deformation in aluminum alloys are summarized, and the future research direction of high-performance ultrafine crystalline and nanocrystalline Al-Mg aluminum alloys is prospected.

Abstract:Superplasticity refers to the ability of some metals, in special testing conditions, to exhibit high elongations of at least 400% before failure. Although this phenomenon appeared initially as a scientific curiosity, it has now become the basis for the large superplastic forming industry which makes significant contributions in many areas including the aerospace and automotive sectors. Early experiments established that superplastic flow requires a small grain size, typically below ∼10 µm, and this is generally achieved through appropriate thermomechanical processing. However, the grain sizes achieved in this way are typically of the order of a few micrometers. Recent investigations of the processing of metals through the application of severe plastic deformation (SPD) demonstrated that these techniques provide an opportunity to achieve much smaller grain sizes to the submicrometer or even the nanometer scale and this gives opportunities to develop new investigations of superplastic flow. Accordingly, this overview summarizes some of the major contributions of SPD processing to research in the area of superplasticity with an emphasis on the characteristics of the flow behavior.

SPD deformation of pearlitic, bainitic and martensitic steels

Abstract:The deformation behavior of nearly fully pearlitic, bainitic and martensitic steels during severe plastic deformation is summarized in this paper. Despite their significantly different yield stresses and their microstructures, their hardening behavior during SPD is similar. Due to the enormous hardening capacity the SPD deformation is limited by the strength of the tool materials. The microstructure at the obtainable limit of strain are quite similar, which is a nanocrystalline structure in the order of 10 nm, dependent on the obtainable strain. The nanograins are partially supersaturated with carbon and the grain boundaries are stabilized by carbon. Another characteristic feature is the anisotropy in grain shape which results in an anisotropy of strength, ductility and fracture toughness. The results are important for the development of ultra-strong materials and essential for this type of steels which are frequently used for application where the behavior under rolling contact and sliding contact is important.

Abstract:The grain size of polycrystalline materials plays a major role in dictating many critical properties including the strength and resistance to plastic flow. Nano/ultra-fine grained steels have the potential to exhibit outstanding physical, mechanical and chemical properties, which could, in principle, lead to new applications and novel technologies. Interstitial free (IF) steels in the coarse-grained condition possesses high ductility but low yield strength due to the decrease in the solid solution hardening effect of the interstitial atoms. Enhancing the strength with adequate ductility may increase the potential applications of IF steel sheets in new applications like those in aviation or defense industries. In fact, the overall trend in the development of IF steels are towards the high strength variety that will allow weight saving through down gauging. Considering the monophase microstructure of IF steel, strengthening methods to enhance its mechanical properties are limited and grain refinement seems to be the most feasible method. The most attractive method for the production of nano/ultra-fine grained IF steel is severe plastic deformation (SPD) processes. Therefore, this review is concerned with the production of nano/ultra-fine IF steel by using SPD methods such as accumulative roll bonding and equal channel angular pressing processes.

Superplastic Deformation Behavior of Fine-Grained AZ80 Magnesium Alloy Prepared by Friction Stir Processing

Abstract:Friction stir processing (FSP) is a new severe plastic deformation technique where microstructure refinement, homogenization, and densification occur simultaneously. In this study, the microstructure and superplastic deformation behavior of AZ80 magnesium alloy prepared by FSP were investigated. FSP led to remarkable grain refinement and modification of texture for AZ80 magnesium alloy. A maximum elongation of 606% was obtained at 3 × 10−4 s−1 and 350 ℃. When superplastic deformation was conducted at 3 × 10-3 s−1 and 300 ℃, or at 1 × 10-4 s−1 and 400 ℃, the superplasticity was relatively lower, thus exhibiting a lower strain rate sensitivity. The coarsening of both grains and β-Mg17Al12 precipitates deteriorated superplastic elongation. Applied deformation promoted the premature dissolution of β precipitates at 400 ℃ during superplastic deformation. Moreover, superplastic deformation weakened and spread the basal texture. Although the activation of prismatic and pyramidal slips is beneficial for superplastic deformation, grain boundary sliding is the main superplastic deformation mechanism.

Abstract:Ultrafine-grained (UFG) metallic materials processed by severe plastic deformation (SPD) techniques often exhibit significantly higher strengths than those calculated by the well-known Hall-Petch equation. These higher strengths result from the fact that SPD processing not only forms the UFG structure but also leads to the formation of other nanostructural features, including dislocation substructures, nanotwins and nanosized second-phase precipitations, which further contribute to the hardening. Moreover, the analysis of strengthening mechanisms in recent studies demonstrates an important contribution to the hardening due to phenomena related to the structure of grain boundaries as a non-equilibrium state and the presence of grain boundary segregations. Herein, the principles of the nanostructural design of metallic materials for superior strength using SPD processing are discussed.

Abstract:Superfunctional materials are defined as materials with specific properties being superior to the functions of engineering materials. Numerous studies introduced severe plastic deformation (SPD) as an effective process to improve the functional and mechanical properties of various metallic and non-metallic materials. Moreover, the concept of ultra-SPD—introducing shear strains over 1000 to reduce the thickness of sheared phases to levels comparable to atomic distances—was recently utilized to synthesize novel superfunctional materials. In this article, the application of ultra-SPD for controlling atomic diffusion and phase transformation and synthesizing new materials with superfunctional properties is discussed. The main properties achieved by ultra-SPD include: (i) high-temperature thermal stability in new immiscible age-hardenable aluminum alloys; (ii) room-temperature superplasticity for the first time in magnesium and aluminum alloys; (iii) high strength and high plasticity in nanograined intermetallics; (iv) low elastic modulus and high hardness in biocompatible binary and high-entropy alloys; (v) superconductivity and high strength in the Nb-Ti alloys; (vi) room-temperature hydrogen storage for the first time in magnesium alloys; and (vii) superior photocatalytic hydrogen production, oxygen production, and carbon dioxide conversion on high-entropy oxides and oxynitrides as a new family of photocatalysts.

Abstract:Severe plastic deformation (SPD) has been widely employed to refine the grain size of Mg alloys, with the main objective to improve the strength and ductility of Mg alloys, since the well-known Hall-Petch equation suggests that a decreased grain size leads to an increased yield strength. However, the yield strength of Mg alloys processed by SPD is often decreased even though the grain size is effectively reduced. The abnormal flow behavior in Mg alloys processed by SPD has attracted great attention although this mechanism is still unclear, due to its complex and extensive influence factors. In this paper, the relationships between the processing conditions, grain refinement, and mechanical properties of the SPD treated Mg alloys are reviewed, with the emphasis on the effects of grain size and texture on the yield strength.

Abstract:Based on our analysis, the grain size effect in the most widely used models such as the Kocks–Mecking–Estrin (KME) model cannot account for the work hardening behaviors of nano-crystalline or ultrafine-crystalline metals processed by severe plastic deformation (SPD). By considering the material's initial state, this study provides a consistent interpretation of their work hardening behaviors in terms of the evolution of microstructural features and the mechanical properties.

Abstract:Friction stir processing (FSP) is a severe plastic deformation (SPD) processing, which is very useful to refine grain size and secondary phase as well as change the texture of metal materials. Many FSP research were focused on aluminum alloys, while there are few reports on FSP of magnesium alloys, esp. on precipitation-hardening Mg-RE alloys. This paper overviewed the microstructures and mechanical properties of several FSPed Mg-RE alloys, such as Mg-Gd-Zn-Zr, Mg-Gd-Ag-Zr, and Mg-Nd-Zn-Zr with or without long period stacking ordering (LPSO) structure. The effects of processing parameters, such as rotation rate and traversing speed, on microstructure and mechanical properties were evaluated. It shows that FSP can effectively lend to performance improvement by microstructure modification, including obtaining remarkable finer and more homogenized grains, changing distribution and volume percentage of secondary phase etc.
