The reliability and validity of Chinese version of Personal and Social Performance Scale (PSP) in patients with major depressive disorder(MDD)

Abstract:Objective:To evaluate the reliability and validity of the Chinese version of the Personal and Social Performance Scale(PSP-CHN)in patients with major depressive disorder(MDD).Method:Seventy-four out-patients and in-patients meeting the Diagnostic and Statistical Mannual of Mental Disorders,Fourth Edition,test revision(DSM-IV-TR)criteria for major depressive disorder were entered in the study.The Global Assessment of Functioning Scale(GAF)was regarded as the ' gold standard ' to investigate the validity of PSP-CHN.The Hamilton Depression Rating Scale 17 items(HAMD-17)was used to assess the severity of disease to explore the correlative validity.Five to seven days after the first PSP-CHN interview,the second PSP-CHN was evaluated by another investigator to assess the test-retest reliability in the patients with MDD.Six subjects were included the inter-rater reliability training.Thirty-two patients with HAMD-17 score more than 17 were followed up for 8 weeks of standardized pharmacotherapy,by the end of 8 weeks,the HAMD-17 and PSP-CHN were reassessed,to explore the sensitivity of PSP-CHN in patients with MDD.Results:The internal consistency(Cronbach' s alpha=0.71)and the inter-rater reliability(Kappa=0.82,ICC=0.94 for PSP-CHN total score)was good.The test-retest reliability was high(ICC=0.90).The scale showed good construct validity with statistically significant correlations with the GAF.The PSP-CHN score had a good negative correlation with the HAMD-17 total score.In the acute phase and stable phase,the factors correlation with PSP total score were different.Conclusion:The Chinese version of the PSP-CHN can be used to assess the personal and social functions of patients with MDD,but the total reliability is not so well as that of assessment of schizophrenia.
