Reliability and validity of the Chinese version of self-reporting questionnaire for the screening of mental disorder among community population

Abstract:Objective To investigate the psychometric properties of the Chinese version of the SRQ-20 in community settings.Methods 956 participants from 10 communities of Hangzhou City and 60 participants from 2 community primary care centers were evaluated by the SRQ-20 for the presence of mental disorders.Discriminative,concurrent,and construct validity as well as internal consistency and screening properties of the SRQ-20 were evaluated.Results Cronbach's alpha for the SRQ-20 was 0.91,and item-total correlation coefficients ranged from 0.51 to 0.69 in the community.The test-retest correlation coefficient was 0.93 in primary care.Varimax-rotated principal component analysis of the SRQ-20 items yielded three factors: depressive symptoms,anxiety symptoms,and somatic symptoms,accounting for 54.17% of total variance.The area under the receiver operating characteristic(ROC) curve was 0.83.The optimal cut-off point for the SRQ-20 was 6/7 yielding sensitivity of 84% and specificity of 72%.Conclusions The SRQ-20 appears to be a reliable and a valid screening tool for common mental disorders in the community of China.
