Abstract:Surface morphology of Al2O3SiO2TiO2 composite ceramic membranes was studied by atomic force microscope (AFM). With the aid of XRD analysis, four different phases were identified, that is, crystalline Al4Ti2SiO12 (2Al2O3SiO22TiO2), Al2O3, TiO2 and non-crystalline SiO2. No binary oxides were detected. Phases configuration of the membranes was determined by the molar ratios of Al:Si:Ti. Significantly different morphologies were investigated for the membranes with different component ratios. The ‘sheet-packed’ morphologies resulted from the formation of the silicate phase Al4Ti2SiO12 which was supposed to be standing at the base of Al2O3, TiO2 and non-crystalline SiO2. Roughness of the ‘sheet-packed’ membranes was strongly influenced by different amounts of SiO2. The larger the amount of SiO2 the membrane had, that much rougher the surface was. Since the growth of the sheets was greatly affected by the compositions, the average thickness of the sheets was varied from about 100 nm to 300 nm, and the mean distance between sheets was changed from about 70 nm to 400 nm. On the other hand, the existence of TiO2 smoothed the surfaces. This study indicates that composite ceramic membranes have a great potential for surface modifications.
