Abstract:A vehicle model by using the software-ADAMS(Automatic Dynamic Analysis of Mechanical System) was builded,and introduces the principles which the ADAMS/Car(one of the professional modules of ADAMS) used to realize control and analyze.Based on this,the author did the steering wheel impulse input test by using ADAMS/Car,and analyzed the results.The virtual experiment system is created by using the virtual—reality software package WTK under VC compiling environment.By applying the emulation curve obtained by ADAMS to drive the motorcar model in the system,the whole dynamic emulation virtual test system is realized and this provides a new method to evaluate the operation stability of vehicles.
Research on Force Characteristics of Steering-wheel System in Tracked Vehicle Simulator

Abstract:A force characteristics function applied in the steering feel simulation system of a tracked vehicle simulator was built. This function is related with the vehicle dynamic parameters and state parameters. A conception of "generalized ground drag index" was presented as well as a method of constructing it with the vehicle state parameters provided. Virtual drive of the tracked vehicle was conducted in Vortex in order to simulate and analyze the changing relations between different parameters and force characteristics function and compute the steering torque in real time on different road situations. The results reflect that the steering-wheel force characteristics function can meet requests very well.

Abstract:Building the Finite Element Models of the automotive wheel′s cornering fatigue test and doing numerical simulate using I-DEAS. The wheel′s fatigue life is evaluated by the Nominal Stress Approach in combination with the aluminum alloy′s properties. In comparison with the test result, the analysis one is close to the real life, which proved that the way is feasible and effective.

Abstract:For a car to have minimum lap times across a track it should be able to produce the maximum cornering force or side force in order to complete the corner at the maximum velocity possible. The grip level of a particular tire limits the maximum side/lateral force it can produce. To find the best steering geometry for a car one should know the grip limit of the tire and at which slip angle it is being produced. This paper provides a simple methodology to find the appropriate Ackermann steering geometry, which can produce the maximum lateral tire grip going through different high speed constant radius corners. Hence, reducing the time spent on-track while testing to find out the suitable steering setup and improving the overall cornering ability of the car. The raw tire data from tire testing runs of the tire: Hoosier 18.0 X 6.0 - 10 R25b is used to fit curves to the raw data using two tire models based on the Magic Formula and Data Non-dimensionalization methods respectively. The results from both of the methods are compared. These tire models are then used to find the ideal steer angles of the front tires at various constant radius steady-state turns and thus the Ackermann geometry of a Formula Student car producing the maximum possible grip. A study of a method for calculating a tracked vehicle's resistance moment as it steers on a hard ground

Abstract:A method is introduced in this essay for calculating the resistance moment present when a tracked vehicle steers on the ground by driving one track while braking on the other track.Through the establishment of a dynamic coordinate system that remains at rest in relation to the vehicle,a velocity equation is derived that can be applied to any point on the track.Based on the fact that the frictional force applied by the ground on a point on the track surface is opposite from the direction in which that point moves,both the size and direction can be determined for the frictional force that causes the steering resistance moment,on the basis of which the steering resistance moment can then be obtained by factoring in the point's distance from the turning center.In fact,the steering resistance moment is calculated through solving a set of kinematics equations.As research indicates,the component of the frictional force between the track and the ground that is parallel to the track provides the driving force during steering,while the other component that is perpendicular to the track generates the steering resistance.This method of calculating the steering resistance moment is more accurate than traditional calculation methods.

Abstract:In this paper based on the multibody system dynamics, a 1/4 - suspension model with 27 DOFs for the car's front MacPherson suspension was built by using the ADAMS software. A series of digital simulation were performed. Then a method to control the steering wheel shimmy of a car at high velocity was put forward. A series of road test have been carried out, which prove that the method is effective.

Abstract:Around the new four‐wheel independent steering system, the adjustment principle of Akman angle is studied in this article. In order to improve steering stability and reduce tire wear, a new algorithm for optimal Ackerman angle allocation at full speed is proposed. Furthermore, combined with the minimum load rule, the four‐wheel rotation angle and driving force are optimized. In this process, Carsim vehicle model and MATLAB/Simulink force and angle allocation algorithm model are established. The final system simulation and performance evaluation demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed force and angle distribution algorithm for vehicle stability and tire wear optimization.

Abstract:Due to the requirements of challenging planetary exploration missions with wheeled mobile robots (WMRs), the driving mechanics of WMRs’ wheels moving on the deformable terrain has been researched intensively, but the mechanics of the wheels’ steering is lacking research. Systematic steering experiments were carried out using a single-wheel testbed for wheels moving on a lunar soil simulant with different radii, widths, lug heights, and lug numbers under different vertical loads. The influence of the eccentric distance and motion state, such as the steering motor’s angular velocity, steering angle, and initial wheel sinkage, were also studied. The experimental results are illustrated with plenty of figures and analyzed based on the preliminary steering mechanics model to draw conclusions. The steering resistance moment is caused by the lateral bulldoze stress and the shearing stress at the bottom of the wheel. The wheel sinkage and steering moment of resistance increase with an increase in steering angle, which could be fitted with exponential functions. The steering moment is the increasing function of the wheel sinkage, eccentric distance, vertical load, and wheel width. The conclusions, empirical models, and experimental data can be taken as references to the optimal design of a steering mechanism and the development/verification of a wheel’s steering mechanics model.
Vehicle Steering Stability Researched by Redeveloped Module of ADAMS/CAR

Abstract:To realize the virtual development of the automobile products,a multi-body system dynamics simulation model was built for a certain domestic passenger car by means of a redeveloped module of ADAMS/CAR.According to the national standard and the test evaluation method on the vehicle steering stability,the simulation tests under typical working conditions such as steady steering and steering return-to-straight ability test were performed and discussed.Comparison between the simulation and the real car tests shows that maximum difference of the main parameters was less than 10%.For the performance indexes which were imperfect both in the real car test and in the virtual car simulation,ideal simulation results could be obtained after adjustment of the parameters.

Abstract:As an important part of the heavy-duty tracked vehicle, the position and posture of crawler travelling device have a certain impact on the vehicle performance. The Bekker soil sinking theory is used in this study to create the heavy-duty tracked vehicle dynamics analysis model under turning conditions on soft soil roads. The effects of working arm position, turning radius R , track grounding width-length ratio b/L and track centre distance B on vehicle driving force, driving power, and steering resistance moment were investigated using a heavy-duty vehicle as an example. Track sliding and ground shear deformation were taken into consideration. The findings demonstrate that when the turning radius R is close to B/2, the driving power is almost 0 and the inside steering resisting moment and driving force are concentrated. When R = B/2 , the vehicle is in the unilateral power steering. What's more, the study can provide theoretical support for heavy tracked vehicles design.

Abstract:Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part D: Journal of Automobile Engineering, Ahead of Print. The variable-configuration wheel-track unmanned ground vehicle (VCWT-UGV) has both fast-moving speed on structured roads and strong passing ability on even roads. Steering dynamics analysis is the theoretical basis to ensure that the UGV can still maintain high maneuverability in complex environments. Based on the elastic-plastic deformation characteristics of the soil on the soft road, considering the dynamic changes in resistance and resistance torque caused by soil accumulation on the wheel side during the center-steering process of UGV. Firstly, MBD-EDM co-simulation is conducted to qualitatively analyze the characteristics of soil accumulation on the wheel side during the steering process. Then, based on the terramechanics characteristics of the locomotion mechanism, the kinematic characteristics of the UGV during center-steering are analyzed, and the mathematical model of soil accumulation on the wheel side is established. Furthermore, the dynamic model of the vehicle center-steering with lateral resistance changes is established, and the accuracy of the model is validated through tests. Based on a validated theoretical model, the changes in resistance, resistance torque, and power during the steering process are analyzed. Based on the analysis results, by adjusting the wheel deflection angle, the driving configuration and the motion modes of VCWT-UGV, the steering power efficiency of VCWT-UGV can reach 71.67%. The research results provide a valuable reference for the lateral dynamic modeling of general UGVs on unstructured roads.

Abstract:By analyzing a point velocity of the track-pad,a moving coordinate system is first established based on the chassis.In this respect,the point velocity function is deduced via the coordinate transformation.As the contact friction between the track-pad and ground occurs reversely to the velocity direction,the frictional value and direction for the steering resistance torque are attained based on the steering center.Then,the in-situ traction force and steering resisting torque are expressed as a function in terms of steering angular velocity.Next,the steering angular velocity is solved using a steering balance function.Finally,the virtual prototyping is applied for the in-situ steering simulation.In conclusion,the longitudinal friction force between the track-pad and ground produces the steering traction,whereas the lateral friction force generates the steering resistance.In particular,the in-situ steering velocity and steering resistance torque are about 75% and 130% of the traditionally-calculated values,respectively.Moreover,the steering resistance torque has no association with the traction velocity.Compared with the traditional calculations,this proposed method tends to be more accurate.

Abstract:Facing the requirement of establishing a zero radius steering mechanical model for the wheel configuration design,dynamic analysis and simulation of the lunar rover,based on the terramechanics,the characteristics analysis on shear stress-displacement and bulldozing resistance for steering wheel was conducted.And the quantitative relation among steering resistance moment,soil properties and wheel dimensions was established.It is confirmed that the wheel width is more sensitive than wheel diameter against steering resistance moment according to theoretical analysis of them.To validate the steering model,a single-wheel test bed was employed to test the steering performed of three rigid wheels with different dimension.The experimental results were consonant with the theoretical results which show the feasibility of this mechanical model in predicting the steering resistance moment.
Optimization and analysis on torque fluctuation of steering system of vehicle based on Adams/Car

Abstract:The basic principle of the torque fluctuation of steering system is detailed. Based on the Adams / Car model of the suspension system,the DOE analysis is performed and the key factors that influence steering drive ratio fluctuation is found. Then,according to the actual vehicle,the best phase angle is calculated under the minimum steering drive ratio fluctuation. The optimization scheme is verified on the actual vehicle.

Abstract:To get the match of front wheel caster angle versus steady cornering velocity, exploring for the real ways of improving stability of high-speed cornering, based on the equations of 2 free-degrees vehicle dynamic and steering system, a calculating formula was founded by using the Routh-Hurwitz criterion. A vehicle made in China was used as samples, and according to the formula its caster angle was calculated versus steady cornering velocity. The tests of front tire footprint and steering wheel angle step input were carried out in term of state criterion GB/6323.2-1994. The tests proved that the formula is characterized by a precision in predicting the match of front wheel caster angle versus steady cornering velocity.

Abstract:A passively suspended road vehicle rolls outwards under the influence of lateral acceleration when cornering, which is very dangerous under large lateral acceleration. In this paper, time lag between steering input and vehicle lateral acceleration response is systematically studied to implement the active roll control algorithm from the viewpoint of vehicle system dynamics. A 3 DOF yaw-roll vehicle model is established based on vehicle lateral, roll and yaw dynamics. Vehicle parameters of a 1997 Jeep Cherokee is used for parametric study, where the influences of vehicle velocity, steering frequency, mass, length, roll, yaw moment of inertia, position of vehicle centre of gravity, and tyre cornering stiffness are studied via numerical simulation. The analysis results will help improve the real time rollover warning/control algorithm design for vehicle safety.
