Abstract:The effects of miscible blending on the crystallization kinetics and crystalline structure of poly(L-lactide) (PLLA) were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), polarized optical microscopy (POM), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. and wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD). It was confirmed that the blends of PLLA and poly(D,L-lactide) (PDLLA) are miscible at all compositions. Due to the dilution effect. the crystallization of PLLA was hindered with the presence of PDLLA. The PLLA/PDLLA blends show the irregular or ring-banded spherulites. The polymorphic behavior of PLLA is influenced by the miscible blending with PDLLA. FTIR and WAXD data indicates that the formation of the alpha-form crystals of PLLA is favored in the blends. With incorporation of 50 wt % PDLLA, the critical temperature for the formation of alpha'- and a-form crystals decreases from similar to 110 (of neat PLLA) to similar to 80 degrees C. The factors affecting the formation of the PLLA alpha'- and a-form crystals were discussed from the thermodynamic and kinetic considerations. It was proposed that the formation of the metastable alpha'-form crystals of PLLA is kinetically preferential, while that of the thermally stable a-form crystals is thermodynamically favored. The blending effects on the crystalline structure of PLLA are ascribed to two factors, that is, the lowered equilibrium melting point and decreased crystallization rate.
Enhanced Multiphase Interfacial Interaction of Impact Polypropylene Copolymer by In-Situ Introducing Polyethylene

Abstract:Impact polypropylene copolymer (IPC) is utilized in various commercial products worldwide due to its excellent physical properties and low production costs. Introducing polyethylene (PE) into IPC is known to improve the impact properties with little rigidity loss, but little is known about the influence of the multiphase interfacial interaction on these properties. In this work, we investigate this matter through fabricating a series of in-reactor alloys with multi-stage polymerization. Morphology observations revealed that introducing PE into IPC in-situ can promote the phase structure without the external force. Dynamic mechanical analysis results revealed that the introduction of well-dispersed PE in-situ could strengthen the interface interaction between PP matrix and EPR dispersed phase, which is conducive to the dissipation of impact energy. Atomic force microscopy-infrared results suggested that the in-situ introduction of PE promotes the enrichment of the ethylene-propylene block copolymers (EbP) to the multiphase interface. This work offered a new insight into the rational design of the next generation IPC with improved properties.

Abstract:The parameters which effect the cavitation strain of polymer blends toughened with a shear yield mechanism have been studied by analysis of the stress acted on the equatorial plane of dispersed-phase particles. As a result, the cavitation strain of polymer blends depends on the Young's modulus and the Poisson's ratio of the dispersed-phase particles and the matrix and also on the break stress of dispersed-phase particles. We tried to provide a criterion for selecting the materials used as dispersed-phase particles which can effectively enhance the toughness of polymer blends. (C) 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
Comparison Among Three Different Approaches to Dynamic Damage Measurement for Polymer Blends

Abstract:In this paper,the dynamic damage evolution in PP(polypropylene)/PA(nylon) blends compatibilized with PP-g-MAH(polypropylene grafted with maleic anhydride) was experimentally studied by three different approaches.The material was experienced high strain rate impact test on the SHPB(Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar) equipment.First,the damage evolution was denoted and measured by the elastic modules decrease of the specimens after impact test;so the relation among the damage D and both strain and strain rate was obtained.Secondly,the damage evolution was denoted by the stress response decrease;based on the ZWT(Zhu-Wang-Tang) nonlinear viscoelastic model and taking account of damage evolution,the damage D can also be measured from its contribution to the whole constitutive response.Thirdly,without any constitutive model presumption,just by combining the SHPB test data,which were served as appropriate input/output,and the BP(Back-Propagation)neural network technique,the constitutive response of the dynamic damage evolution for the polymer blends tested was also identified.The damage evolution rules obtained from above-mentioned three different approaches were compared and discussed.

Abstract:Glass beads, non-modified and modified separately with two different coupling agents, were incorporated in high density polyethylene to prepare composite materials with different interfacial adhesion strengths. Tensile tests show that the mechanical behaviour of the materials is sensitive to the strain rates. The strong interfacial adhesion can delay the occurrence of damage and so increase the load-bearing ability under both monotonic and cyclic loading. In situ tensile tests give damage mechanisms mainly induced by the interfacial debonding. The stronger the interfacial adhesion, the lower the number of glass beads debonded from the matrix under a given stress. The degree of microdamage defined as the percentage of debonded particles is obtained as a function of the applied load. (C) 2001 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract:Nanostructured polyketone (PK)/polyamide 6 (PA6) blends can be readily prepared via melt blending technologies and exhibit ultra-high toughness when PA6 is present as the nanoscale phase domains. When PA6 content is 30 vol%, the impact strength of the blends increases from 21.4 kJ/m2 of pure PK to 103.2 kJ/m2. The impact strength of the PK/PA6 blends with a 5:5 composition ratio reaches as high as 113 kJ/m2. The strong intermolecular force between PK and PA6 molecular chains enables the PA6 nanophase to cavitate to dissipate a significant amount of impact energy and effectively prevents the crack propagation or even terminates the cracks. The fracture mechanism of the PK/PA6 blends was further examined by the essential work of fracture method which proves that PK/PA6 blends show improved ability to prevent crack propagation. This work may deepen the understanding of polymer blend systems with strong hydrogen bonding interaction.

Abstract:Polylactide (PLA)/poly(ethylene-co-octene) (POE) blends containing ethylene-glycidyl methacrylate copolymer (EGMA) as a compatibilizer were prepared by melt blending. An immiscible, two-phase structure with POE dispersed in the PLA matrix was observed by scanning electron microscopy. It was found that the POE particle size was significantly decreased by the addition of EGMA, and the POE particle size and distribution decreased with the increase of the compatibilizer content up to 2% EGMA, beyond which the POE particle size and distribution remained unchanged. The reactions between the epoxy groups of EGMA and carboxylic or hydroxyl groups of PLA were elucidated by the Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Rheological results showed that the G'(omega), G "(omega), and complex viscosity of PLA/POE blends significantly increased at low frequencies with the addition of EGMA. The failure mode changed from brittle fracture of the neat PLA to ductile fracture of the PLA/POE blends.

Abstract:High impact polymer composites are generally composed of a matrix polymer and an impact modifier. The effect of modifier structure and properties on the balance between the toughness and rigidity of high impact polymer composites has been reported [<a class="workspace-trigger" href="#bib1">1</a>, <a class="workspace-trigger" href="#bib2">2</a>]. As the main component, the structure and properties of the matrix polymer can certainly affect this balance. This balance has been assessed using both theory and experiment. A relation between the critical interparticle distance IDc and the brittle strength of the matrix polymer <math>σb</math>, i.e. IDc ∼ <math>σb23</math>, was identified from both experiment and theory. Based on the relation between <math>σb</math>and molecular weight, i.e. <math>σb=A−B/M¯n</math>, the effect of the matrix polymer molecular weight can be thereby studied quantitatively. It is clear that the higher<math>M¯n</math>, the higher <math>σb</math>, and the larger IDc is. Larger IDc means lower content of rubber or elastomer modifier is needed to induce the brittle-ductile transition, leading to less loss for the rigidity of impact polymer composites.

Abstract:From the angle of energy transformation an equation was obtained for the brittle transition in polymer blends. The effects of interparticle distance, temperature and strain rate on the brittle-tough transition in polymer blends were characterized by this equation. The calculations show that, for this transition: (1) increasing temperature and decreasing interparticle distance are equivalent and the shift factor increases with increasing temperature: (2) decreasing strain rate and decreasing interparticle distance have equivalent effects on the transition; (3) the strain rate must be optimum in order to find the brittle-tough transition phenomena for a given temperature region.

Abstract:In recent years, rubber toughened polypropylene (PP) blends have been extensively investigated with special regard to the importance of PP matrix properties (e.g., crystal morphology and structure) in tailoring the toughening efficiency. Unfortunately, although high melt flowability is indispensable to the processing of polymers into complex thin-wall products, it remains a huge challenge to achieve a marvelous balance between stiffness and toughness in the blends with relatively low matrix molecular weight. Herein, taking PP/EPR (ethylene-propylene copolymer) blends as an example, the combined effects of matrix molecular weight and crystallinity on the mechanical properties of PP/EPR blends have been examined in both experiment and theory. The experimental results show that decreasing molecular weight leads to significant deterioration in notched impact toughness, tensile strength and Young's modulus. Impressively, the toughness loss caused by the decrease of molecular weight can be well-compensated by a slight reduction in the matrix crystallinity, without evidently sacrificing the strength and modulus, demonstrating an improved stiffness-toughness balance. Theoretical analysis indicates that the impact toughness of PP/EPR blends is heavily dependent on the chain entanglement density (v e ) of PP matrix, and a linear relationship between critical interparticle distance (ID c ) and the v e 1/3 has been verified from both experiment and theory. Moreover, it is interesting to find that decreasing matrix crystallinity can increase the v e of low-molecular-weight PP matrix, which enables the effective toughening at lower concentration of EPR and thus gives rise to less loss in the strength and modulus. We believe this work not only gives a new insight into the role of chain entanglement in the toughening but also provides a promising guidance for the design of high-performance PP with high melt flowability.

Abstract:Polymers with particle inclusions have wide applications, and the mechanical properties of polymer composites affect their reliability in service. The strength of these composites is dependent on factors such as particle fraction, size, distribution, and interface interaction between the two phases, in addition to the properties of the polymers and particles. The size effect of particles and interface damage play an important role and thus draw considerable attention. In this paper, the size- and interface-dependent strength of polypropylene (PP) with nano/micro silica (SiO 2 ) particles of different fractions is studied through a combination of tensile experiments on a series of samples and corresponding three-dimensional (3D) finite element modeling. The results indicate that PP with 2% SiO 2 nanoparticles of 50 nm exhibits relatively higher tensile strength, shedding light on the microstructure mechanism where smaller particle sizes lead to better interface bonding. Furthermore, the particle size and interface coupling effect is analyzed based on the size-dependent elastic modulus model and the interface-cohesive model. The simulation demonstrates the local interface damage evolution around a particle of the composites in tension. These findings are beneficial for designing polymer composites with nanoparticle inclusions.

Abstract:The variation of metallic particle size and sample porosity significantly alters the dynamic mechanical properties of high density granular composites processed using a cold isostatically pressed mixture of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), aluminum (Al) and tungsten (W) powders. Quasi-static and dynamic experiments are performed with identical constituent mass fractions with variations in the size of the W particles and pressing conditions. The relatively weak polymer matrix allows the strength and fracture modes of this material to be governed by the granular type behavior of agglomerated metal particles. A higher ultimate compressive strength was observed in relatively high porosity samples with small W particles compared to those with coarse W particles in all experiments. Mesoscale granular force chains comprised of the metallic particles explain this unusual phenomenon as observed in a hydrocode simulation of a drop-weight test. Macrocracks forming below the critical failure strain for the matrix and unusual behavior due to a competition between densification and fracture in dynamic tests of porous samples were also observed. Shock loading of this granular composite resulted in higher fraction of total internal energy deposition in the soft PTFE matrix, specifically thermal energy, which can be tailored by the W particle size distribution.

Abstract:The influence of the dispersed phase on impact properties of impact polypropylene copolymer (IPC) was systematically investigated by preparing a series of samples with different self-structure and size of dispersed particles. The impact test results at room temperature revealed that in case of rubber size below the critical value, the core-shell structure was dominant in the excellent impact strength though the impact strength was also affected by the size. For the impact strength at lower temperature, it seemed to be independent of the core-shell structure of dispersed particle and only dropped with the increase of rubber size. Compared with common polypropylene/ethylene-propylene rubber (PP/EPR) binary blend, IPC samples presented larger rubber sizes but higher impact strength at lower temperature, which was ascribed to the presence of ethylene propylene block copolymers (EbP) component. For describing the toughening mechanism of IPC at room temperature determined by size and self-structure of dispersed phase, a quantity linear relationship between toughness and rubber size was proposed. Abstract:Generally, toughness of polypropylene (PP) is an issue which has been investigated for many years to search for improvements. A traditional approach is to blend with rubber particles to enhance the toughness of PP yet modulus of PP decreases accordingly. Recently, we have achieved a good balance of toughness and stiffness of PP via blending PP with a small amount of elastomeric nano-particles (ENP). Based on our measurements, mechanical properties of the blends studied both the toughness of PP at room temperature and at −20°C show substantial increase. On the other hand, the stiffness of the PP blends retains or even possesses a slight enhancement. One of the reasons for this improvement is due to the fact that the ENP is not only a toughening modifier but also a nucleation agent for the PP. The nucleation density of the blends increases, while the crystallization kinetics of the blends becomes faster compared with the pure PP samples.

Abstract:The toughness of PP/EPDM blends was measured over a wide range of temperature (25-132 degrees C) and composition (0-26 wt% EPDM). It was found that increasing temperature and decreasing interparticle distance have equivalent effects on the brittle-tough transition of toughening PP with EPDM, and the shift factor increases with increasing temperature. A correlation was also found between temperature and critical interparticle distance. When critical interparticle distance was plotted versus T-g-T, where T-g is defined as the brittle-tough transition temperature of the matrix itself, the curves for different blend systems converge to a single master curve. Influence of Nano-Scale Morphology on Impact Toughness of Epoxy Blends

Abstract:The microstructure and ballistic impact toughness was investigated for a series of dynamically heterogeneous epoxy blends composed of diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (DGEBA) that is cross-linked with stoichiometric mixtures of a rigid cycloaliphatic diamine and flexible polypropylene oxide based di-amines. The ballistic impact resistance of the blends correlates with the presence of nano-scale structure, where blends that contain 2-5 nm domains exhibit nearly a doubling of impact toughness when compared to blends that exhibit large scale phase separation. The length scale of phase separation was manipulated by controlling the ratio of short chain to long chain propylene oxide diamines. At low long chain content, the materials nanoscale phase separate into 2-5 nm domains, resulting in a transparent epoxy that exhibits relatively good impact toughness. At high long chain volume fractions, the mixtures undergo macroscale phase separation and lose both optical clarity and impact performance. Interestingly, some of the macro-phase separated blends with intermediate long chain polypropylene oxide diamine content still exhibit high impact resistance if a nanoscale structure is still present in the rigid continuous phase. Small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were used to characterize the phase separated structure in these blends. When the SAXS peak associated with nanoscale phase separation shifts to lower scattering vector and its intensity is reduced, the impact performance of the mixtures is likewise reduced. We hypothesize that the small scale structure in the blends facilitates rapid deformation during high rate ballistic impact events, which allows the material to absorb more energy before failure. Abstract:Polyactide (PLA) was blended with an ethylene/n-butyl acrylate/glycidyl methacrylate (EBA-GMA) terpolyrner and a zinc ionomer of ethylene/methacrylic acid (EMAA-Zn) copolymer. The phase morphology of the resulting ternary blends and its relationship With h.-tip-act behaviors were studied systematically. Dynamic vulcanization of EBA-GMA in the presence of EMAA-Zn was investigated by torque rheology, and its cross-link level was evaluated by dynamic mechanical analysis. Reactive compatibilization,between PLA and EBA. GMA was studied using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The dispersed domains in the ternary blends displayed a "salami"-like phase structure, in which the EMAA-Zn phase. evolved.. from occluded subinclusions into continuous phase with decrease in the EBA-GMA/EMAA-Zn ratio. An optimus range of particle sizes of the dispersed domains for high impact toughness was identified. Also, the micromechanical deformation process Of these ternary blends was also investigated by,by Observation of the impact-fractured surfaces using the electron microscope. It was suggested that the low cavitation resistance of dispersed particles in conjunction with suitable interfacial adhesion was responsible for the Optimum impact toughness observed.

Abstract:The focus was the investigation of the morphology and properties of PA6 blends with core-shell and grafted ABS by in-situ reactive extrusion. The compatibility and morphology of ABS/PA6 compatibilized blend can be controlled by ABS type and blend composition. The morphology results illustrated that submicron-sized ABS droplets were evenly dispersed in core-shell ABS/PA6 blends, resulting in a significant improvement in the impact strength. Aggregation of submicron-sized ABS particles was observed in grafted ABS/PA6 blends, corresponding to lower toughness. Due to having higher contents of the rigid component, the grafted reactive blends presented higher tensile and flexural strengths. This result indicated that the toughening effectiveness of reactive blends was determined by the structure variables of ABS.

Abstract:Recent experiments have shown that the particle-reinforced composites display significant particle size effect. The classical plasticity theories have no intrinsic material lengths and cannot explain the observed size effects. The strain-gradient plasticity theories have been applied to study the particle size effects in composites, but they tend to predict the stress–strain curves in uniaxial tension that are lower than the experimental data at the small strain (<2%) and become higher than the experimental data at relatively large strain. The present study shows that the discrepancy at the small strain is mainly because the effect of quench hardening is not accounted for in prior strain-gradient plasticity models. The discrepancy at relatively large strain is due to the particle/matrix interfacial debonding. We have extended the conventional theory of mechanism-based strain-gradient plasticity (CMSG) established from the Taylor dislocation model to account for the effect of quench hardening. We have also used the cohesive zone model to study the particle/matrix interface decohesion. The numerical results accounting for quench hardening and interfacial decohesion agree well with Lloyd’s experimental data.

Effects of component viscosities on morphology and on mechanical properties of the blend were studied by scanning electron microscope (SEM), tensile property analysis, and dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA). It was found that the disperse particle size of compatibilizer-free blends decreased with the decreasing viscosity ratio of the disperse phase to TPU. The efficiency of the compatibilizer in reducing the particle size varied with viscosity ratios of the disperse phase to compatibilizer. However, the particle size did not decrease with the decreasing viscosity ratio monotonically. With lower viscosity ratio, addition of 5 wt % compatibilizer resulted in a greater reduction of particle size and less loss in the tensile properties as compared to the TPU matrix. For the polyethene (PE) that has the lowest viscosity value among all the POs, its size in the blend was stabilized with the addition of compatibilizer and no compatibilization was detected by DMA and by tensile property analysis.
