Abstract:In this paper, we consider the higher divided difference of a composite function f(g(t)) in which g(t) is an s-dimensional vector. By exploiting some properties from mixed partial divided differences and multivariate Newton interpolation, we generalize the divided difference form of Faa di Bruno's formula with a scalar argument. Moreover, a generalized Faa di Bruno's formula with a vector argument is derived.

Abstract:We generalize the construction of affine polar graphs in two different ways to obtain partial difference sets and amorphic association schemes. In the first generalization we replace the quadratic form in the affine polar graph construction by higher degree homogeneous functions that are p-ary weakly regular bent. The second generalization uses a combination of quadratic forms and uniform cyclotomy. The negative Latin square type partial difference sets arising from the second generalization seem to be new.

Abstract:Interpolation of data points is a fundamental problem in the field of CAD/CAM, geometric modeling and computer graphics and so on [1, 11-19]. Sampled or given data points are usually interpolated by using B-splines in many applications [1, 2, 3, 11-16, 19]. However, we also need to interpolate a set of infinitive data points, for instance, pieces of surfaces, textures, tiling and continuous functions defined on a subset of Euclidean space. Here we interpolate some surfaces as a whole instead of some sampled data points. The problem of finding fillet surfaces for a set of given surfaces can be considered as an example. We aim to construct a smooth surface in the whole domain, which interpolates these given surfaces defined on some sub-domains. In fact, some special cases have already been studied with different methods and view points. Given four boundary curves and corresponding derivatives along the input curves, the Coons patches are bicubically blended with the given curve data which consists of infinite data points [1, 5]. The CBarnhill, Birkhoff and Gordon approach for triangular Coons patches can be explained as follows. Suppose we are given three boundary curves. We seek a surface that interpolates to all three of them, namely, a transfinite triangular interpolant [1, 6]. More Coons type interpolants are proposed over triangles, and a general interpolant called N-sided surface patches is proposed by J. Gregory [7]. Abstract:In curve and surface modeling, Bernstein polynomial compositions are widely used for various geometric operations. So it is important to investigate them both in theory and practice. The problems are investigated by using polynomial interpolation and symbolic computation, and the proposed method is applied for curve and surface cases. Compared with two existing methods, the proposed method has the advantages on computational cost, coding efficiency, storage cost. However its numerical accuracy is lower than the method based on the generalized de Casteljau algorithm.

Abstract:We develop a quasisymmetric analogue of the combinatorial theory of Schubert polynomials and the associated divided difference operators. Our counterparts are "forest polynomials", and a new family of linear operators, whose theory of compositions is governed by forests and the "Thompson monoid". Our approach extends naturally to $m$-colored quasisymmetric functions. We then give several applications of our theory to fundamental quasisymmetric functions, the study of quasisymmetric coinvariant rings and their associated harmonics, and positivity results for various expansions. In particular we resolve a conjecture of Aval-Bergeron-Li regarding quasisymmetric harmonics.

Abstract:Numerical difference computation is one of the cores and indispensable in the modern digital era. Tao general difference (TGD) is a novel theory and approach to difference computation for discrete sequences and arrays in multidimensional space. Built on the solid theoretical foundation of the general difference in a finite interval, the TGD operators demonstrate exceptional signal processing capabilities in real-world applications. A novel smoothness property of a sequence is defined on the first- and second TGD. This property is used to denoise one-dimensional signals, where the noise is the non-smooth points in the sequence. Meanwhile, the center of the gradient in a finite interval can be accurately location via TGD calculation. This solves a traditional challenge in computer vision, which is the precise localization of image edges with noise robustness. Furthermore, the power of TGD operators extends to spatio-temporal edge detection in three-dimensional arrays, enabling the identification of kinetic edges in video data. These diverse applications highlight the properties of TGD in discrete domain and the significant promise of TGD for the computation across signal processing, image analysis, and video analytic.

Abstract:For a real function $f:[0,1]\to\mathbb{R}$, the difference quotient of $f$ is the function of two real variables $\operatorname{DQ}_f(a,b)=\dfrac{f(b)-f(a)}{b-a}$, which we view as defined on the triangle $\mathcal{T}=\{(a,b):0\leq a<b\leq1\}$. In this paper we investigate how to determine whether a given function of two variables $H(a,b)$ is the difference quotient of some real function $f(x)$. We develop three independent methods for recognizing such a function $H$ as a difference quotient, and corresponding methods for recovering the underlying function $f$ from $H$.

Abstract:This paper is devoted to studying difference indices of quasi-prime difference algebraic systems. We define the quasi dimension polynomial of a quasi-prime difference algebraic system. Based on this, we give the definition of the difference index of a quasi-prime difference algebraic system through a family of pseudo-Jacobian matrices. Some properties of difference indices are proved. In particular, an upper bound of difference indices is given. As applications, an upper bound of the Hilbert-Levin regularity and an upper bound of orders for difference ideal membership problem are deduced.

Abstract:Difference sets and their generalisations to difference families arise from the study of designs and many other applications. Here we give a brief survey of some of these applications, noting in particular the diverse definitions of difference families and the variations in priorities in constructions. We propose a definition of disjoint difference families that encompasses these variations and allows a comparison of the similarities and disparities. We then focus on two constructions of disjoint difference families arising from frequency hopping sequences and showed that they are in fact the same. We conclude with a discussion of the notion of equivalence for frequency hopping sequences and for disjoint difference families.

Abstract:A novel H3N3-2 interpolation approximation for the Caputo fractional derivative of order is derived in this paper, which improves the popular L2C formula with (3- )-order accuracy. By an interpolation technique, the second-order accuracy of the truncation error is skillfully estimated. Based on this formula, a finite difference scheme with second-order accuracy both in time and in space is constructed for the initial-boundary value problem of the time fractional hyperbolic equation. It is well known that the coefficients' properties of discrete fractional derivatives are fundamental to the numerical stability of time fractional differential models. We prove the related properties of the coefficients of the H3N3-2 approximate formula. With these properties, the numerical stability and convergence of the difference scheme are derived immediately by the energy method in the sense of -norm. Considering the weak regularity of the solution to the problem at the starting time, a finite difference scheme on the graded meshes based on H3N3-2 formula is also presented. The numerical simulations are performed to show the effectiveness of the derived finite difference schemes, in which the fast algorithms are employed to speed up the numerical computation.

Abstract:In the past few years, the differential quadrature method has been applied extensively in engineering. This book, aimed primarily at practising engineers, scientists and graduate students, gives a systematic description of the mathematical fundamentals of differential quadrature and its detailed implementation in solving Helmholtz problems and problems of flow, structure and vibration. Differential quadrature provides a global approach to numerical discretization, which approximates the derivatives by a linear weighted sum of all the functional values in the whole domain. Following the analysis of function approximation and the analysis of a linear vector space, it is shown in the book that the weighting coefficients of the polynomial-based, Fourier expansion-based, and exponential-based differential quadrature methods can be computed explicitly. It is also demonstrated that the polynomial-based differential quadrature method is equivalent to the highest-order finite difference scheme. Furthermore, the relationship between differential quadrature and conventional spectral collocation is analysed. Abstract:In this paper, we propose the generalized B divided difference, with which the (k−1)th derivative of B-spline curves of order k can be obtained directly without the need to compute the first (k−2) derivatives as before. Abstract:As in the polynomial case, non‐polynomial divided differences can be viewed as a discrete analog of derivatives. This link between non‐polynomial divided differences and derivatives is defined by a generalization of the derivative operator. In this study, we obtain a generalization of Taylor series using the link between non‐polynomial divided differences and derivatives, and state generalized Taylor theorem. With the definition of a definite integral, the relation between the non‐polynomial divided difference and non‐polynomial B‐spline functions is given in terms of integration. Also, we derive a general form of the Peano kernel theorem based on a generalized Taylor expansion with the integral remainder.
