Abstract:In this paper, we consider the higher divided difference of a composite function f(g(t)) in which g(t) is an s-dimensional vector. By exploiting some properties from mixed partial divided differences and multivariate Newton interpolation, we generalize the divided difference form of Faa di Bruno's formula with a scalar argument. Moreover, a generalized Faa di Bruno's formula with a vector argument is derived.

Abstract:Through introducing the generalized Vandermonde determinant, the linear algebraic system of a kind of Vandermonde equations is solved analytically by use of the basic properties of this determinant, and then we present general explicit finite difference formulas with arbitrary order accuracy for approximating first and higher derivatives, which are applicable to unequally or equally spaced data. Comparing with other finite difference formulas, the new explicit difference formulas have some important advantages. Basic computer algorithms for the new formulas are given, and numerical results show that the new explicit difference formulas are quite effective for estimating first and higher derivatives of equally and unequally spaced data.

Abstract:In order to achieve higher computational precision in approximating the first-order derivative of the target point, the 1-step-ahead numerical differentiation formulas are presented. These formulas greatly remedy some intrinsic weaknesses of the backward numerical differentiation formulas, and overcome the limitation of the central numerical differentiation formulas. In addition, a group of formulas are proposed to obtain the optimal step length. Moreover, the error analysis of the 1-step-ahead numerical differentiation formulas and the backward numerical differentiation formulas is further investigated. Numerical studies show that the proposed optimal step-length formulas are effective, and the performance of the 1-step-ahead numerical differentiation formulas is much better than that of the backward numerical differentiation formulas in the first-order derivative approximation.

Abstract:A novel H3N3-2 interpolation approximation for the Caputo fractional derivative of order is derived in this paper, which improves the popular L2C formula with (3- )-order accuracy. By an interpolation technique, the second-order accuracy of the truncation error is skillfully estimated. Based on this formula, a finite difference scheme with second-order accuracy both in time and in space is constructed for the initial-boundary value problem of the time fractional hyperbolic equation. It is well known that the coefficients' properties of discrete fractional derivatives are fundamental to the numerical stability of time fractional differential models. We prove the related properties of the coefficients of the H3N3-2 approximate formula. With these properties, the numerical stability and convergence of the difference scheme are derived immediately by the energy method in the sense of -norm. Considering the weak regularity of the solution to the problem at the starting time, a finite difference scheme on the graded meshes based on H3N3-2 formula is also presented. The numerical simulations are performed to show the effectiveness of the derived finite difference schemes, in which the fast algorithms are employed to speed up the numerical computation.

Abstract:The convolutional perfectly matched layer with alternating direction implicit scheme is improved to decrease the reflection error level with bigger Courant number (CFLN). We demonstrate the advancement in detail by dispersing finite difference time domain equations. Although the method needs a bit more computational memory, results show that the reflections with different CFLNs are perfectly limited in a similar range in the modified the scheme.

Abstract:In this paper, using the piecewise linear and quadratic Lagrange interpolation functions, we propose a novel numerical approximate method for the Caputo fractional derivative. For the obtained explicit recursion formula, the truncation error is investigated, which shows the involved convergence order is O((3-)) with (0,1). As an application, we use this proposed numerical approximation to solve the time fractional diffusion equations by the barycentric rational interpolations in space. The resultant systems of algebraic equations, truncation error, convergence, and stability are analyzed. Theoretical analysis and numerical examples show this constructed method enjoys accuracy of , where d is the degree of the rational polynomial.

A refined convergence estimate for a fourth order finite difference numerical scheme to the Cahn-Hilliard equation

Abstract:In this article we present a refined convergence analysis for a second order accurate in time, fourth order finite difference numerical scheme for the 3-D Cahn-Hilliard equation, with an improved convergence constant. A modified backward differentiation formula temporal discretization is applied, and a Douglas-Dupont artificial regularization is included to ensure the energy stability. In fact, a standard application of discrete Gronwall inequality leads to a convergence constant dependent on the interface width parameter in an exponential singular form. We aim to obtain an improved estimate, with such a singular dependence only in a polynomial order. A uniform in time functional bounds of the numerical solution, including the higher order Sobolev norms, as well as the associated bounds for the first and second order temporal difference stencil, have to be carefully established. Certain recursive analysis has to be applied in the analysis for the BDF-style temporal stencil. As a result, we are able to apply a spectrum estimate for the linearized Cahn-Hilliard operator, and this technique leads to the refined error estimate. A three-dimensional numerical example of accuracy check is presented as well.

Abstract:In this paper we present some substantial modifications and improvements for some derivative-free iterative formulae. We propose some new methods which are convergent iterative formulae of order 1 + root 2 approximate to 2.414 with only two evaluations of f per step. Thus the new methods enjoy the efficiency index root(1 + root 2) approximate to 1.554. Especially, a new method of self-accelerating regula falsi type with global convergence for finding a simple root p of a nonlinear equation f(x) = 0 in the interval [a, b] is offered in this paper. The new method of self-accelerating regula falsi type is shown to be convergent with order 1 + root 2 approximate to 2.414 for both the sequences of diameters {(b(n) - a(n))} and the iterative points {x(n)}. The new method has been tested on a series of published examples. The numerical results demonstrate that the new method is more effective. Furthermore, we introduce a derivative-free transformation for multiple zeros and consider its error analysis and then demonstrate its superiority by comparing it with the traditional ones. Abstract:Finite difference method as a popular numerical method has been widely used to solve fractional diffusion equations. In the general spatial error analyses, an assumption $u\in C^{4}(\bar{\Omega})$ is needed to preserve $\mathcal{O}(h^{2})$ convergence when using central finite difference scheme to solve fractional sub-diffusion equation with Laplace operator, but this assumption is somewhat strong, where $u$ is the exact solution and $h$ is the mesh size. In this paper, a novel analysis technique is proposed to show that the spatial convergence rate can reach $\mathcal{O}(h^{\min(\sigma+\frac{1}{2}-\epsilon,2)})$ in both $l^{2}$-norm and $l^{\infty}$-norm in one-dimensional domain when the initial value and source term are both in $\hat{H}^{\sigma}(\Omega)$ but without any regularity assumption on the exact solution, where $\sigma\geq 0$ and $\epsilon>0$ being arbitrarily small. After making slight modifications on the scheme, acting on the initial value and source term, the spatial convergence rate can be improved to $\mathcal{O}(h^{2})$ in $l^{2}$-norm and $\mathcal{O}(h^{\min(\sigma+\frac{3}{2}-\epsilon,2)})$ in $l^{\infty}$-norm. It's worth mentioning that our spatial error analysis is applicable to high dimensional cube domain by using the properties of tensor product. Moreover, two kinds of averaged schemes are provided to approximate the Riemann--Liouville fractional derivative, and $\mathcal{O}(\tau^{2})$ convergence is obtained for all $\alpha\in(0,1)$. Finally, some numerical experiments verify the effectiveness of the built theory.

Abstract:In the current paper, the numerical solutions for a class of fractional advection–diffusion equations with a kind of new generalized time-fractional derivative proposed last year are discussed in a bounded domain. The fractional derivative is defined in the Caputo type. The numerical solutions are obtained by using the finite difference method. The stability of numerical scheme is also investigated. Numerical examples are solved with different fractional orders and step sizes, which illustrate that the numerical scheme is stable, simple and effective for solving the generalized advection–diffusion equations. The order of convergence of the numerical scheme is evaluated numerically, and the first-order convergence rate has been observed.

Abstract:In this paper, we present an efficient method for solving a class of higher order fractional differential equations with general boundary conditions. The convergence of the numerical method is proved and an error estimate is given. Finally, eight numerical examples, both linear and nonlinear, are presented to demonstrate the accuracy of our method. The proposed method introduces suitable base functions to calculate the approximate solutions and only requires us to deal with the linear or nonlinear systems. Thus, our method is convenient to implement. Furthermore, the numerical results show that the proposed method performs better compared to the existing ones.

Abstract:When diffusive problem is simulated using classical finite volume method(FVM),the abrupt change in diffusivity coefficient of the two finite control volumes will lead to numerical oscillation of diffusive flux nearly the interface.According to equivalence of diffusive flux on both sides of the interface and linear distribution of variable in finite control volume,an improved discretization scheme of diffusive term was presented.Numerical examples show that the two discretization schemes give basically coincident results of variable and its gradient distribution with each other,while the improved discretization eliminates the oscillation of diffusive flux near the interface and produces more accurate results.The improved discretization scheme of diffusive term can be effectively to solve the diffusive problem with abruptly changed diffusive coefficients.

Abstract:We first present a new delay-dependent fractional generalization of Halanay-like inequality to characterize the asymptotic behavior of fractional functional differential equations (F-FDEs). Then we study the dissipativity of F-FDEs with a bounded absorbing set and the asymptotic stability and the contractivity of F-FDEs with algebraically contractive rate. Two numerical schemes are further constructed for F-FDEs based on Grünwald--Letnikov formula and $L1$ method for Caputo fractional derivative, together with linear interpolation for the functional terms. These two schemes are proved to be dissipative and contractive and can preserve the exact decay rate as the continuous equations. These results can be directly applied to some special cases of F-FDEs, such as the fractional delay differential equations, fractional integro-differential equations, and fractional delay integro-differential equations. Finally, several numerical examples are given to illustrate the advantages of the structure-preserving numerical methods. In particular, we shall compare the numerical performance of our schemes and the popular predictor-corrector algorithms for F-FDEs and demonstrate that our schemes are more efficient and robust, especially for some stiff systems.
