Abstract:For a real function $f:[0,1]\to\mathbb{R}$, the difference quotient of $f$ is the function of two real variables $\operatorname{DQ}_f(a,b)=\dfrac{f(b)-f(a)}{b-a}$, which we view as defined on the triangle $\mathcal{T}=\{(a,b):0\leq a<b\leq1\}$. In this paper we investigate how to determine whether a given function of two variables $H(a,b)$ is the difference quotient of some real function $f(x)$. We develop three independent methods for recognizing such a function $H$ as a difference quotient, and corresponding methods for recovering the underlying function $f$ from $H$.

Abstract:Bi-difference sets generalize pseudo-difference sets and D-sets. Bi-difference sets automatically have an order relation if they are weaked slightly. As an application of the partially order relation, we present a characteristic of ideals in the weaked bi-difference sets. Abstract:In this paper, we show how to deduce several moment integrals by the method of q-difference equation. In addition, we obtain several generalizations of transformational identities by the technique of moment integrals. Meanwhile, we obtain some special cases of bilateral-unilateral series and the Rogers-Ramanujan identities as by-products. Moreover, we give two mixed generating functions for generalized Rogers-Szego polynomials by moment integrals and derive two transformational identities by symmetry. At last, a trilinear generating function for generalized Rogers-Szego polynomials is given by moment integrals.

Abstract:This paper is devoted to studying difference indices of quasi-prime difference algebraic systems. We define the quasi dimension polynomial of a quasi-prime difference algebraic system. Based on this, we give the definition of the difference index of a quasi-prime difference algebraic system through a family of pseudo-Jacobian matrices. Some properties of difference indices are proved. In particular, an upper bound of difference indices is given. As applications, an upper bound of the Hilbert-Levin regularity and an upper bound of orders for difference ideal membership problem are deduced.

Abstract:We prove an important property of the binomial transform: it converts multiplication by the discrete variable into a certain difference operator. We also consider the case of dividing by the discrete variable. The properties presented here are used to compute various binomial transform formulas involving harmonic numbers, skew-harmonic numbers, Fibonacci numbers, and Stirling numbers of the second kind. Several new identities are proved and some known results are given new short proofs.

Abstract:Our investigation is motivated essentially by the demonstrated applications of the basic (or q-) series and basic (or q-) polynomials, especially the basic (or q-) hypergeometric functions and basic (or q-) hypergeometric polynomials, in many diverse areas. Here, in this paper, we use two q-operators T(a,b,c,d,e,yDx) and E(a,b,c,d,e,y theta x) to derive two potentially useful generalizations of the q-binomial theorem, a set of two extensions of the q-Chu-Vandermonde summation formula and two new generalizations of the Andrews-Askey integral by means of the q-difference equations. We also briefly describe relevant connections of various special cases and consequences of our main results with a number of known results.

Abstract:Through introducing the generalized Vandermonde determinant, the linear algebraic system of a kind of Vandermonde equations is solved analytically by use of the basic properties of this determinant, and then we present general explicit finite difference formulas with arbitrary order accuracy for approximating first and higher derivatives, which are applicable to unequally or equally spaced data. Comparing with other finite difference formulas, the new explicit difference formulas have some important advantages. Basic computer algorithms for the new formulas are given, and numerical results show that the new explicit difference formulas are quite effective for estimating first and higher derivatives of equally and unequally spaced data.

Abstract:Though a core element of the digital age, numerical difference algorithms struggle with noise susceptibility. This stems from a key disconnect between the infinitesimal quantities in continuous differentiation and the finite intervals in its discrete counterpart. This disconnect violates the fundamental definition of differentiation (Leibniz and Cauchy). To bridge this gap, we build a novel general difference (Tao General Difference, TGD). Departing from derivative-by-integration, TGD generalizes differentiation to finite intervals in continuous domains through three key constraints. This allows us to calculate the general difference of a sequence in discrete domain via the continuous step function constructed from the sequence. Two construction methods, the rotational construction and the orthogonal construction, are proposed to construct the operators of TGD. The construction TGD operators take same convolution mode in calculation for continuous functions, discrete sequences, and arrays across any dimension. Our analysis with example operations showcases TGD's capability in both continuous and discrete domains, paving the way for accurate and noise-resistant differentiation in the digital era.

Abstract:First, we are concerned with a lemma on the difference quotients due to Halburd, Korhonen and Tohge. We show that for meromorphic functions whose deficiency is origin dependent the exceptional set associated with this lemma is of infinite linear measure. In particular, for such entire functions in this set there is an infinite sequence {r(n)} such that m(r(n), f(z c)/ f(z)) not equal o(T(r(n), f)) for all r(n). Then we extend this lemma to the case of meromorphic functions f(z) such that log T(r, f) <= ar/(log r)(2+nu), a, nu > 0, for all sufficiently large r, by using a new Borel type growth lemma. Second, we give a discrete version of this Borel type growth lemma and use it to provide an extension of Halburd's result on first order discrete equations of Malmquist type.
