Abstract:Leather manufacturing generates a large amount of leather solid waste, among which the effective treatment of leather waste scraps rich in protein resources has always been a challenge for the tanning industry. In this paper, a green and convenient method was devised for the first time to prepare protein retarding material (PRM) for gypsum from chrome-free tanned leather waste. Aldehyde tanned leather scraps as the main chrome-free leather waste were directly hydrolyzed through high-pressure hydrothermal treatment without any chemicals to obtain PRM. Compared with chemical treatment (acid or alkaline hydrolysis), high-pressure hydrothermal method avoided the decrease of protein product purity due to without the help of acid and alkali. The results showed that PRM obtained from leather waste had a significant effect on prolonging the initial setting time and delaying the release of hydration heat of gypsum. With the dosage or molecular weight of PRM increased, this retarding effect on gypsum was more remarkable. SEM, XRD, and FTIR analysis indicated that the presence of PRMs inhibited the hydration process of gypsum hemihydrate to gypsum dihydrate. Through polypeptide-calcium chelation, PRMs could bind free Ca2+ ions dissolved from gypsum to delay them from participating in the hydration reaction. The larger molecular weight or the more dosage of PRM, the stronger ability to bind calcium ions in gypsum. Chemical structure characterization and molecular dynamics simulation of PRM-Ca chelate further proved that PRMs mainly through carboxyl groups on molecular chain combined with Ca2+ in gypsum system to inhibit hydration reaction, thereby fulfilling the retardation demand. This study indicated that PRM from leather scraps can be a promising candidate for gypsum retardation, which provides a path for the efficient utilization of leather waste.

Abstract:Leather making is one of the most widespread industries in the world. The production of leather goods generates different types of solid wastes and wastewater. These wastes will pollute the environment and threat the health of human beings if they are not well treated. Consequently, the treatment of pollution caused by the wastes from leather tanning is really important. In comparison with the disposal of leather wastewater, the treatment of leather solid wastes is more intractable. Hence, the treatment of leather solid wastes needs more innovations. To keep up with the rapid development of the modern leather industry, various innovative techniques have been newly developed. In this mini–review article, the major achievements in the treatment of leather solid wastes are highlighted. Emphasis will be placed on the treatment of chromium-tanned solid wastes; some new approaches are also discussed. We hope that this mini-review can provide some valuable information to promote the broad understanding and effective treatment of leather solid wastes in the leather industry.

Abstract:Leather making is the process of converting raw hides into leather. Amounts of solid waste containing hazardous and high value components are generated during this process. Therefore, the elimination of the potential pollution and resource utilization of leather solid waste are the primary research hotspots. Herein, we comprehensively review the recent advances in the resource utilization of leather solid waste generated from chrome tanning including the utilization of tannery hair waste, untanned solid waste, chrome-containing leather solid waste, tannery sludge and finished leather waste, emphasizing on the general and novel utilization approaches. Finally, the remaining challenges and perspectives were summarized, in order to accelerate the development of resource utilization of leather solid waste.Graphical abstract

Abstract:As a natural material, leather has been widely used in daily life due to its high biocompatibility, wearing comfort, and excellent mechanical strength. However, with the increasing demand for a better life among people, the single function of leather has difficulty in meeting the requirements, which limits its application prospects. It is particularly important to develop multifunctional leather composites with diverse characteristics. Therefore, leather can be modified and functionally designed through physical and chemical methods towards intelligent wearable devices. From this perspective, we review the research progress of intelligent leather-based wearable composites, mainly focusing on the preparation methods and application directions in recent years. Finally, we emphasize the challenges that leather composites will face in practical applications and propose future research directions.

Abstract:By means of knitting and weaving, the new yarn was woven into a new eco-friendly leatherette. A series of research methods and data are summarized through the optimization and improvement of the design process and the heat-setting treatment of the fabric after weaving, which will bring a breakthrough in the reform of the preparation, research and development of new environmentally-friendly materials and product application. The new environmentally-friendly imitation leather fabrics is superior to similar products and boasts advantages in product application, such fabric is comfortable, breathable, waterproof, windproof, folding-resistant, wear-resisting and biodegradable. The cost of its production is much lower than expensive leather products, in the meantime, the space for design and development in the aspect of fabric texture, pattern, and color can be expanded more compared with other leather and imitation leather products.

Abstract:Leather production is considered to be a versatile industry to explore the utilization of raw materials and the by-products obtained from leather processing. Each step of leather making requires the application of chemicals on leather, to achieve desired properties. Leather processing faces few major concerns such as a high load of chemicals in the tannery effluent and the adverse effect of chromium (VI) on health and ecosystem. Therefore, the value-added involvements of the newer technologies came into the picture, to achieve advanced properties on leather, alternate of hazardous chemicals used in leather processing, and switch towards eco-friendly approaches. Nanotechnology is one of the highly discussed advanced technology and needs to be open for all for more understanding and discussion, on how it has a positive impact on pre-tanning, tanning, post-tanning, finishing, and effluent treatment during leather processing. This article reviews the different approaches/methods/materials through which nanotechnology or nanomaterials can intervene in each and every step of leather making. The present review also focuses on the issues and challenges associated with the uses of nanomaterials and their remedies on health and environment.

Abstract:Over last few years, polyurethane (PU) has been applied in many fields by virtue of its mechanical strength, wear resistance, toughness, low temperature flexibility and other characteristics recently. To be more precise, PU materials can be screened through raw materials, improved formulas and so on to obtain the corresponding "customized" products. This gives the product "customizability" and further broadens the use of functional PUs. PU is one of the important coating materials in leather manufacture. This paper explores the academic research status of functional PU and its modification and application in leather production and leather finishing.

Abstract:Restrictions on heavy metals, especially chromium, have encouraged alternative tanning systems that can reduce environmental and human health risks from conventional chrome-based tanning. In this work, metal-free combination tanning was developed by using vegetable tannins and a triazine-based syntan containing active chlorine groups (SACC). Specifically, the relationship between leather performance (e.g., hydrothermal stability and organoleptic properties) and technical protocols (e.g., types and dose of tannins) was systematically established. The optimized protocol involving a unique procedure (i.e., 10% SACC pre-tanning, shaving, and 25% wattle tanning) endowed the leather with high shrinkage temperature (~ 92 °C) and met the Chinese standards for shoe upper leather (QB/T 1873-2010). Our method not only produces zero chrome-containing solid wastes, but also uses ~ 75% less tannin for leather manufacture. The excellent leather performance was ascribed to the synergistic effects, where SACC and wattle diffused into collagen fibrils and may bind to collagen via covalent, hydrogen and ionic bonding, locking the hierarchical structure of collagen from microfibrils to fiber bundles. Moreover, we summarized these findings and proposed a diffusion-binding-locking mechanism, providing new insights for current tanning theory. Together with the biodegradable spent tanning liquor, this approach will underpin the development of sustainable leather manufacture.

Abstract:The traditional wet-finishing process for leather manufacturing is complicated and uses numerous chemical additives, limiting the leather industry's development in the direction of energy saving and emission reduction. Integrated with the allegro promotion of chrome-free organic tanning system, amphoteric wet-finishing materials have shown great promise for settling the current issues such as low chemical absorption-rates. Herein, we developed a disruptive "three-in-one" strategy for ecological organic chrome-free leather manufacturing based on the on-demand multifunctional fluorescent amphoteric polymer (referred to as pADD-DMENA). As expected, pADD-DMENA exhibited satisfyingly integrated "three-in-one" origins including retanning, fatliquoring and dyeing properties. Compared to conventional anionic dyed leather, pADD-DMENA dyed leather had a uniformly bright yellow color surface and superior lightfastness, durability, and washability. Furthermore, its fluorescent ontology enabled the visual tracking of pADD-DMENA in crust leather and sewage, allowing for real-time monitoring of pADD-DMENA precise distribution. Notably, because of the "three-in-one" features, pADD-DMENA significantly shortened the conventional wet-finishing process, greatly reducing machining time and demonstrating better environmental conservation of wastewater. To summarize, the development of pADD-DMENA allows the traditional wet finishing process to be completed in one step, effectively simplifying the tanning process, reducing additive of various chemicals, and broadening the way for ecological leather manufacturing in a green direction with low energy consumption and less pollution.

Abstract:Abstract Nowadays, diverse leather usage conditions and increasing demands from consumers challenge the leather industry. Traditional leather manufacturing is facing long-term challenges, including low-value threshold, confined application fields, and environmental issues. Leather inherits all the biomimetic properties of natural skin such as flexibility, sanitation, cold resistance, biocompatibility, biodegradability, and other cross-domain functions, achieving unremitting attention in multi-functional bio-based materials. Series of researches have been devoted to creating and developing leather-based flexible multi-functional bio-materials, including antibacterial leather, conductive leather, flame-retardant leather, self-cleaning leather, aromatic leather, and electromagnetic shielding leather. In this review, we provide a comprehensive overview of the commonly used leather-based functional materials. Furthermore, the possible challenges for the development of functional leathers are proposed, and expected development directions of leather-based functional materials are discussed. This review may promote and inspire the emerging preparation and applications of leather for flexible functional bio-based materials. Graphical Abstract

Abstract:The leather industry waste-water is one of the main pollution factors of the ecological environment. Due to long-term market competition, it was impossible to transfer the cost of waste water treatment to consumers. Discharging wastewater illegally became the usual behaviours of leather factories in past decades in China. The Environmental Supervision Department of China was faced with the dilemma of 'If we let it be, there will be a mess' and 'if we take strict supervision the enterprises could not survive due to the high treatment cost'. We have to tolerate and accept the fact that environmental pollution is an inevitable consequence of extensive economic construction. In order to reduce and control pollution, the Supervision Department are strengthening supervision while accelerating the upgrading of leather production equipment, supporting enterprises to improve production process, guiding the mergers and reorganizations of the leather manufacturing industry, and seeking the dialectical unity of industry and public interests between pollution and development, survival and ecology.

Abstract:The escalating focus on emulating natural textiles has prompted a concurrent surge in research aimed at developing leather-like materials. However, traditional leather products are mostly represented as sheets or blocks, which limit their reprocessing. Therefore, in this study, waste leather scraps were processed into powders with an average particle size of 5–10 μm. Subsequently, these recycled powders were wet-spun alongside a polyurethane matrix and polyester yarn to fabricate leather-like yarns. The leather-like yarns prepared in this study had good hygroscopic properties, mechanical properties (51.71 % strain and 4.49 cN/tex), and environmental stability (no more change withstood 24 h of bending, 50 cycles of immersion in 75 % ethanol solution, and 7 d of high and low temperature treatment). A no-salt and low-temperature dyeing method is further used to prepare color leather-like yarns, which requires less energy than polyester. These results provide guidance for the transition of recycling leather waste move to application, enabling the timely advancement of reusing leather waste initiatives in the textile industry.

Abstract:Currently, ammonia-nitrogen (NH3–N), chloride (Cl−) and chromium (Cr) pollution from leather manufacturing processes attracts much attention and limited the sustainable development of the leather industry. In this paper, conventional trypsin bating and high-salt pickling procedures were substituted by a salt-free pickling-bating system, using acidic protease L80A and salt-free pickling agent naphthalene sulfonic acid (NSA); a novel integrated technology comprising non-ammonia bating, salt-free pickling and high-exhausting chrome-tanning methods was established to reduce NH3–N, Cl− and Cr pollution. The results indicated that the properties of the leather produced by the established method were better than the conventional method. Furthermore, the established integrated salt-free pickling-bating technology resulted in the almost elimination of NH3–N and chloride pollution from waste effluent. The total Cr utilization ratio was increased to 95% from 80%, the total Cr discharge was reduced by 74%. Scale-up experiments further verified the acceptability of this novel technology in terms of physical and organoleptic properties of the resultant leather. It can be easy to predict that the effluent liquors with a little amount of NH3–N, chloride and chromium can be disposed of conveniently. We suppose that the established novel technology is an environment-friendly technology and a way forward in the development of the modern sustainable leather industry.

Abstract:The paper researches the processing for leather by utilizing different kinds of tanning materials, retanning and leather fatliquoring, and analyses the effect of leather electroconductibility influenced by water ratio in it and pressure added on the leather. The study illustrates: the greater electric conduction function of tanning materials or amount of polar radical they containing, the better conductivity the leather has. There is a compact relationship between the electric charge of different chemical material which were added in leather and electric conduction function, and the electrical conductivity of leather can be improved obviously by increasing the electric charge and water ratio the leather has.
