Abstract:Currently, the methods to identify leather materials have limitations, and identifying natural leather types is also relatively complex. In this research, the microstructures of four types of mammalian leathers (cattle leather, pig leather, sheep leather, and deer leather), three kinds of reptilian leathers (crocodile leather, lizard leather, and snake leather) and regenerated leather were characterized by scanning electron microscopy. The spectral curves (from 900 to 1700 nm) of these leather samples were extracted using a hyperspectral imaging system, and their spectral characteristics were analyzed. A method of leather identification by the hyperspectral imaging system combined with chemometrics was established. The results showed that the spectral curves of natural and regenerated leather differed in the number, position, and depth of the characteristic peaks, enabling the classification of regenerated leather by comparative analysis with the naked eye. The first-order derivative processing–principal component analysis–discriminant analysis model achieved a 98% correct classification rate, confirming the hyperspectral imaging system's feasibility in the leather material identification field. We believe that his research is beneficial for the leather industry to understand the classifications scientifically, in order to protect consumer rights and further develop the leather testing industry.

Abstract:Leather is a durable material well-known for its fashion, style, and versatility. Identifying the animal species from which leather originated is necessary in leather quality-check, fraud detection, exotic animal protection, etc. The species identification techniques currently in practice involve subjective and supervised analysis with laboratory-specific devices. This paper discusses optimized and automated species identification by employing a portable and cost-effective (economically efficient) digital microscope. The goal is to acquire the leather images of the four most predominantly used permissible species, with the definite hair-pore regions. Preliminary experiments investigate the adequate image sensing parameters for efficient sensor data processing. Otsu's thresholding followed by circular Hough transform (CHT) segments and estimates the morphological features of the informative hair-pore regions. The k-nearest neighbor (KNN) based machine learning algorithm models a pattern recognition technique for automated species prediction. Evaluation measures objectively validate the performance of the proposed pre-processing and hair-pore segmentation. The experimental analysis presents the uniqueness and significance of estimated morphological features. The study also compares KNN and Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP) based species prediction. The comparative analysis ascertains the significance of KNN-based leather species identification with 92.5% accuracy. Thus, the present research assists in building the digital signatures of permissible leather species. It also contributes to design a cost-effective and automated leather species prediction technique with objective analysis.

Abstract:The visual inspection system was developed for defects detection on leather surfaces, which is an important component of automatic CAD/CAM cutting systems. The main functions of the system are quality control and raw material cutting. An efficient algorithm, which combines multiresolution approach, energy and entropy matrices, is presented for detection of defects embedded in leather surface images. A wavelet band selection procedure was developed to automatically determine the number of resolution levels and decompose subimages for the best discrimination of defects and removals of repetitive texture patterns in the image. An adaptive binary thresholding is then used to separate the defective regions from the uniform gray-level background in the restored image. The proposed methodology is able to efficiently detect several types of defects that current approaches cannot detect, and is fast enough to be used for real-time leather inspection.

Abstract:The species identification of leather artifacts is of great significance for studying the use and spread of ancient leathers; however, the absence of effective detection methods remains an obstacle. Here, we performed a shotgun proteomic analysis to identify the protein composition of ancient leather artifacts. Based on the Swiss-Prot database, 154 proteins were identified. We investigated these proteins using molecular evolution, structural domain, and sequence alignment analyses to select suitable proteins. Two proteins, Kelch-like family member 17 (KLHL17) and Nance-Horan Syndrome actin remodeling regulator (NHS), were selected for antibody preparation. Their binding affinities were determined by antibody potency and surface plasmon resonance (SPR). Furthermore, we developed and optimized an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) suitable for the species identification of ancient leather artifacts. Two antibodies specifically identified the species of leather samples from goats and cattle, respectively. We established a new method with the advantages of portability, cost-effectiveness, and high sensitivity that was applied to leather species identification. Our study provides an effective detection tool for archeological leather artifacts utilizing the classical proteomics approach and ELISA technique. In addition, this study provides insights into the development of new protein-based methods for the identification of cultural relics.

Abstract:The regional geographical environment where the Mongolians live is extremely unique, so they have gradually formed a distinct national aesthetic consciousness in their long-term life, which is clearly reflected in Mongolian leather products.The Mongolian people have long mastered the method of using sewing technology to make various leather products, and their technical level has been continuously improved, gradually becoming a unique craft of the Mongolian people.Most of the Mongolian leather products are made from various animal fur in nature.The method of applying Mongolian traditional leather technology to the modern leather design with national cultural characteristics in Inner Mongolia has been studied, and the design method developed by the author's design practice and theory research to verify, and to design creative tourist souvenirs with Mongolian cultural characteristics that conform to Mongolian traditional aesthetics and modern aesthetic standards.

Abstract:As a natural material, leather has been widely used in daily life due to its high biocompatibility, wearing comfort, and excellent mechanical strength. However, with the increasing demand for a better life among people, the single function of leather has difficulty in meeting the requirements, which limits its application prospects. It is particularly important to develop multifunctional leather composites with diverse characteristics. Therefore, leather can be modified and functionally designed through physical and chemical methods towards intelligent wearable devices. From this perspective, we review the research progress of intelligent leather-based wearable composites, mainly focusing on the preparation methods and application directions in recent years. Finally, we emphasize the challenges that leather composites will face in practical applications and propose future research directions.

Abstract:<p>Increasing accounts of fraud and persistent labeling problems have brought the authenticity of leather products into question. In this study, we developed an extremely simplified workflow for real-time, <em>in situ</em>, and unambiguous authentication of leather samples using rapid evaporative ionization mass spectrometry (REIMS) coupled with an electric soldering iron. Initially, authentic leather samples from cattle, sheep, pig, deer, ostrich, crocodile, and snake were used to create a chemometric model based on principal component analysis and linear discriminant analysis algorithms. The validated multivariate statistical model was then used to analyze and generate live classifications of commercial leather samples. In addition to REIMS analysis, the microstructures of leathers were characterized by scanning electron microscopy to provide complementary information. The current study is expected to provide a high-throughput tool with superior efficiency and accuracy for authenticating the identity of leathers and other consumer products of biogenic origin.</p>

Abstract:Abstract Nowadays, diverse leather usage conditions and increasing demands from consumers challenge the leather industry. Traditional leather manufacturing is facing long-term challenges, including low-value threshold, confined application fields, and environmental issues. Leather inherits all the biomimetic properties of natural skin such as flexibility, sanitation, cold resistance, biocompatibility, biodegradability, and other cross-domain functions, achieving unremitting attention in multi-functional bio-based materials. Series of researches have been devoted to creating and developing leather-based flexible multi-functional bio-materials, including antibacterial leather, conductive leather, flame-retardant leather, self-cleaning leather, aromatic leather, and electromagnetic shielding leather. In this review, we provide a comprehensive overview of the commonly used leather-based functional materials. Furthermore, the possible challenges for the development of functional leathers are proposed, and expected development directions of leather-based functional materials are discussed. This review may promote and inspire the emerging preparation and applications of leather for flexible functional bio-based materials. Graphical Abstract

Abstract:The halal certification of products holds significant importance for Muslim consumers, necessitating the development of reliable techniques for identifying leather products made from raw materials. This study employed rapid and accurate analytical methods to distinguish between cowhide, pigskin, and artificial leather. A combination of scanning electron microscope (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) was used to assess the variations in collagen fiber structures and thermal stability among the leather samples. The findings revealed that morphological surface analysis, including grain patterns and pores, facilitated swift differentiation between different leather types. Pigskins exhibit three-hole patterns on their morphological surface compared to cowhide, with random pores and tighter grain patterns, whereas artificial leather lacks natural grain patterns and pores altogether. While FTIR spectra exhibited similarities between cowhide and pigskin leathers, variations in vibration intensity enabled effective discrimination. Artificial leather, particularly PVC-based materials, displayed distinct spectra, allowing FTIR spectroscopy to effectively discern between halal and non-halal leather. Cowhide possesses strong and sharp vibration at wavenumber 1736, 1277, and 817 cm-1 compared to pigskin, which has stronger vibration at 1534 cm-1. Meanwhile, PVC-based artificial leather exhibited stretching at 1723 and 744 cm-1 wavenumbers. DSC analysis proved valuable in differentiating between genuine and artificial leather based on unique peaks and thermal behavior. These three techniques provide reliable means to determine the raw material origins of leather products.

Abstract:Nowadays, artificial leather is an important commodity in daily life, especially in the fields of apparels, stationery and furniture. However, due to the maturity of producing technology and market segmentation, the industry trends to be saturated. Leather product manufacturers face intense competition and increasing production costs to survive on feeble profits. Thus, everyone is seeking a solution to break this predicament. Thanks to technical advancement and diversified intelligent electronics, a promising market opportunity has emerged that looks for innovative functional leather. This leather can exhibit high thermal conductivity and act as an essential component of electronic outside packages to prevent over-heating. This study aims to develop a high thermal conductive artificial leather (HTCAL). It incorporates smart electronic textile material (conductive yarn) into traditional artificial leather production through modifying the material and structure of its base layer. The result showed that the thermal conductivity of HTCAL was improved by 19.6% and, when wearing directly, a significant temperature gap between skin and the inner side of the leather occurred, which could offer a comfort cool feeling when worn in summer. This approach is a breakthrough to seize a new opportunity and offer an advancing direction. Further, this HTCAL can free the industry from periodical demand restriction, that is, seasonal limitation, and broaden product research and development into more fields. Thus, this approach can not only improve manufacturers' competitiveness and break them out of the current predicament, but also it creates new business opportunities.

Abstract:The defects on a leather surface may be caused by the poor material handling process during the production and manufacturing stages. It is essential to eliminate the natural variations and artificial injuries on the leather surfaces, in order to control the quality of the products and achieve customer satisfaction. To date, the visual inspection of the leather defects is performed manually by human operators. Thus, this paper aims to introduce an automatic defect detection technique by employing a deep learning method. Specifically, the proposed method consists of two stages: classification and instance segmentation. The former stage distinguishes whether the piece of the leather sample contains a defective part or not, whereas the latter is to localize the precise defective location. To accomplish the tasks, the dataset is first collected under a proper laboratory environment. Among 250 defective samples and 125 non-defective samples, the proposed method has been demonstrated its feature learning capability by producing promising performance when considering relatively fewer training samples. Particularly, the defect types focused in this study are the black lines and wrinkles. The best performance obtained is ∼95% for the classification task, whereas the segmentation task reaches an Intersection over Union rate of 99.84%
[Rapid Discriminantion of Common Leather Varieties by Near Infrared Spectroscopy]

Abstract:Rapid classification of leather variety means important to product process control, trading process and market surveillance. There is no official detection standard on classification of leather variety for the present. By now the testers use organoleptic method, burning method, chemical dissolution method, microscope method, or combination of them, to give a convincing result. The testers are required to highly sufficiently experienced, and not influenced by subjective factors. It also costs too much time. For the purpose of this research, spectra of five common varieties of leather samples (full-grain leather, split leather, sheep leather, reborn leather and manmade leather) were collected from market. Discriminant analysis combined with pre-processing method, including multiplicative signal correction (MSC), standard normal variate (SNV), first derivative and second derivative were used to classify the spectra above. It shows that the above five varieties of leather overlapped seriously in the same space. But manmade leather can be easily distinguished from the other four leather varieties using rear spectra, with the misclassified percent of 1.2%. The last four leather varieties covered each other partly in the same space, classify of any two of them can reach a lower misclassified percent, about 1.3%～17.9%. Different pre-processing method affected the discriminantion model positively or negatively with no regularity. None of these pre-processing methods was found to give a positive effect in a stable and persistent way. It can be concluded that it is feasible to discriminate the common leather varieties by near infrared Spectroscopy. All of the samples were taken from the finish products in the market (eg, handbag, belt, leather coat), which were processed in different ways (eg. tanning, knurling, dyeing). The different processes of the samples could bring an unforeseeable influence to the model which may be reduced by some method, for example, increasing the number and variety of samples.

Abstract:Machine-vision-based surface defect inspection is one of the key technologies to realize intelligent manufacturing. This paper provides a systematic review on leather surface defect inspections based on machine vision. Leather products are regarded as the most traded products all over the world. Automatic detection, location, and recognition of leather surface defects are very important for the intelligent manufacturing of leather products, and are challenging but noteworthy tasks. This work investigates a large amount of literature related to leather surface defect inspection. In addition, we also investigate and evaluate the performance of some edge detectors and threshold detectors for leather defect detection, and the identification accuracy of the classical machine learning method SVM for leather surface defect identification. A detailed and methodical review of leather surface defect inspection with image analysis and machine learning is presented. Main challenges and future development trends are discussed for leather surface defect inspection, which can be used as a source of guidelines for designing and developing new solutions in this field.

The Research of Leather Image Classification Based on Fractal Dimension

Abstract:Leather is typical natural texture image which has fine and complex structure.In order to classification leather image,the new feature called fractal dimension is used in this paper.Blanket dimension is used to calculate the fractal dimension of leather image.The fractal dimension is compared with threshold to discriminate cowhide image and sheepskin image.According to the result of experimentation,the algorithm can effectively discriminate cowhide and sheepskin.

Abstract:Detecting leather surface defects has become an important subject in industrial inspections and attracted significant attention as a challenging task. Traditional image processing techniques struggle with the detection of leather surface defects with a variety of shapes, sizes, backgrounds, and noise. Deep learning is a promising solution to this problem. This work focuses on the comparative study of 26 classical deep learning models in the field of leather surface defect type recognition. That aims to lay a foundation for the design and development of new schemes for leather defect inspection. Based on tanned leather from an enterprise, eight types of leather surface defects (cavities, pinholes, scratches, rotten surfaces, growth lines, healing wounds, folds, and bacterial wounds) were collected using an ultra-high definition whole leather imaging device. Two challenging datasets with various shapes, sizes, and colours were constructed. Extensive experimental evaluations were conducted. The deep learning model can achieve more than 95% accuracy when the defect imaging is ideal and limited. In case that the shapes, sizes, and colour of the above eight defects keep diverse, Densenet169 performed the best with a recognition accuracy of 72.5%, and ShuffleNet model with the worst performance reached 64.3%. Systematic in-depth experimental evaluation shows that deep learning models are promising in the field of leather surface defect detection, however, challenges remain.

Abstract:Over last few years, polyurethane (PU) has been applied in many fields by virtue of its mechanical strength, wear resistance, toughness, low temperature flexibility and other characteristics recently. To be more precise, PU materials can be screened through raw materials, improved formulas and so on to obtain the corresponding "customized" products. This gives the product "customizability" and further broadens the use of functional PUs. PU is one of the important coating materials in leather manufacture. This paper explores the academic research status of functional PU and its modification and application in leather production and leather finishing.
Basic forensic identification of artificial leather for hit-and-run cases

Abstract:Single fibers retrieved from a victim's garments and adhered to the suspect's automobile have frequently been used to prove the relationship between victim and suspect's automobile. Identification method for single fiber discrimination has already been conducted. But, a case was encountered requiring discrimination of artificial leather fragments retrieved from the victim's bag and fused fibers from the bumper of the suspect's automobile. In this report, basic studies were conducted on identification of artificial leathers and single fibers from leather materials. Fiber morphology was observed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), color of these leather sheets was evaluated by microspectrophotometry (MSP), the leather components were measured by infrared micro spectrometry (micro-FT-IR) and the inorganic contents were ascertained by micro-X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (micro-XRF). These two methods contribute to other analytical methods too, in the case of utilized single fiber analytical methods. The combination of these techniques showed high potential of discrimination ability in forensic examinations of these artificial leather samples. In regard with smooth surface artificial leather sheet samples, a total of 182 sheets were obtained, including 177 colored sheets directly from 10 of 24 manufacturers in Japan, and five of them were purchased at retail circulation products. Nine samples of suede-like artificial leather were obtained, 6 of them were supplied from 2 manufacturers and 3 sheets were purchased as retailing product. Single fibers from the smooth surface artificial leather sheets showed characteristic for surface markings, and XRF could effectively discriminate between these sheets. The combination of results of micro-FT-IR, color evaluation by MSP and the contained inorganic elements by XRF enabled to discriminate about 92% of 15,576 pairs comparison. Five smooth surface samples form retailing products were discriminated by their chemical composition into four categories, and in addition color information to this result, they were clearly distinguished. Suede-like artificial leather sheets showed characteristic extra-fine fibers on their surface by the observation of SEM imaging, providing high discriminating ability, in regard with suede-like artificial leather sheets were divided into three categories by micro-FT-IR, and the combination of these results and color evaluation information, it was possible to discriminate all the nine suede-like artificial leather sheets examined.
