Abstract:Effective treatment and high-valued utilization of chrome leather scraps have always been desired by all tanneries, which is of great significance for green and sustainable development of leather industry. In this paper, we first devised a green and effective approach to obtain collagen hydrolyzed extract (CHE) from chrome leather scraps, and then the obtained CHE was used in the granulation of pastoral soil to prepare CHE-Soil granular fertilizer. The results indicated that chrome leather scraps were effectively dechromed with sodium oxalate and then hydrolyzed by a high-pressure hydrothermal method without any chemical to obtain high-purity CHE. When the 4.5 wt%similar to 12.5 wt% CHE solution was introduced into the granulation process, the granulation rate of pastoral soil was up to 89.8%similar to 95.6%. However, the effective granulation rate was decreased due to the increase in large granule size (>5 mm). CHE-Soil granular fertilizer prepared by adding more CHE exhibited better surface roundness and more excellent crush resistance. Moreover, this type of granular fertilizer possessed excellent water retention and slow-released nutrient properties. Pine leaf peony cultivation experiments further showed that the presence of CHE-Soil granular fertilizer rapidly promoted plant growth and effectively increased the harvest of plants. This study indicated that CHE obtained from chrome leather scraps could be effectively used as a nutritious additive with adhesiveness to prepare the granular fertilizer for plant growth, which provides a novel idea for designing valorization methods of leather waste.

Abstract:The development of chrome-free tanning agents is of great significance for the green and sustainable improvement of the leather industry. Metal organic framework (MOFs) is a kind of nanomaterial with steady framework formed by the coordination of metal clusters with organic ligands, which gives it a natural self-masking structure. Herein, two kinds of bimetallic MOFs were obtained via post-synthesis modification and used in the tanning to produce leather with good hydrothermal stability. M n+ - replacing Zr-MOFs is denoted as Zr/M−MOFs (M n+ = Ti 4+ , Al 3+ ). Zr/M−MOFs were characterized by XRD, SEM, FT-IR, TG, XPS, and N 2 adsorption/desorption. The results indicate that M n+ - replacing provides more active site that can be combined with collagen fibers. Compared to the Zr-MOFs tanned leather (75.3 °C), the shrinkage temperature of Zr/M−MOFs tanned leather (79.9 °C) has been further improved. In addition, Zr/M−MOFs can also avoid the problems caused by traditional metal tanning, such as the worse washability of aluminum tanning. A new strategy to improve the tanning performance of MOFs-based tanning agents was provided. It gives a new approach to the development of chrome-free tanning agents.

Abstract:In the present study, a greener approach to tanning process based on nanocomposite assisted chrome tanning has been attempted. Nanocomposite was offered prior to basic chrome sulfate of chrome tanning process during goat garment making. It was found that the shrinkage temperature of the wet blue tanned by nanocomposite associated with less chrome was above 100 degrees C and the Cr2O3 content in tanning wastewater of nanocomposite associated with less chrome systerm decreased to 165.6 mg/L which brought about better chromium uptake and reduction of chromium load in the wastewater compared to where the 3% and 8% chrome was offered alone. The mechanical properties of crust treated with nanocomposite were close to those of the crust tanned by 8% chrome and the addition of nanocomposite could endow crust with good handle feeling, filling property and softness. The scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy showed that the grain surface of the crust treated with nano composite was flat and smooth. The scanning electron microscopy analysis also indicated that the crust treated with nanocomposite contained well-dispersed fibrils and did not destroy the microstructure of collagen. Additionally, The energy dispersive spectrometer analysis revealed that the nanocomposite associated with less chrome tanning process also afforded uniform distribution of chromium in the leather. More specifically, the significant reduction in biochemical oxygen demand, chemical oxygen demand in the wastewater and appeared that suspended solid in the effluent when compared to tanning with 3% and 8% chrome alone conventional tanning method were revealed from environmental impact assessment studies. Most importantly, nanocomposite could bring about the enhancement of chrome uptake, resulting in environmental, economic and social positive impacts to accelerate the sustainable development of leather industry. Abstract:Restrictions on heavy metals, especially chromium, have encouraged alternative tanning systems that can reduce environmental and human health risks from conventional chrome-based tanning. In this work, metal-free combination tanning was developed by using vegetable tannins and a triazine-based syntan containing active chlorine groups (SACC). Specifically, the relationship between leather performance (e.g., hydrothermal stability and organoleptic properties) and technical protocols (e.g., types and dose of tannins) was systematically established. The optimized protocol involving a unique procedure (i.e., 10% SACC pre-tanning, shaving, and 25% wattle tanning) endowed the leather with high shrinkage temperature (~ 92 °C) and met the Chinese standards for shoe upper leather (QB/T 1873-2010). Our method not only produces zero chrome-containing solid wastes, but also uses ~ 75% less tannin for leather manufacture. The excellent leather performance was ascribed to the synergistic effects, where SACC and wattle diffused into collagen fibrils and may bind to collagen via covalent, hydrogen and ionic bonding, locking the hierarchical structure of collagen from microfibrils to fiber bundles. Moreover, we summarized these findings and proposed a diffusion-binding-locking mechanism, providing new insights for current tanning theory. Together with the biodegradable spent tanning liquor, this approach will underpin the development of sustainable leather manufacture.

Abstract:Chrome tanning agent is the most widely used tanning agent with the best performances of finished leather, but the traditional chrome tanning process poses severe challenges because of the serious chromium pollution, thus the upgrading of cleaner chrome tanning process is imminent. In order to reduce the residual chromium in wastewater and increase the utilization rate of chrome tanning agent, 4-acetyl-heptanediate (AHA), a high exhaustion chrome auxiliary, was developed and applied in chrome retanning process. The results showed that AHA chrome retanning processes (AHA-6 and AHA-4) significantly reduced the chromium content in wastewater by 48.14% and 47.57%, and increased the chromium content in leather by 102.14% and 82.43%. COD and TDS values decreased by 43.82% and 31.46% with AHA-4 method. The addition of AHA obviously reduced the chromium concentration of wastewater, improved the chromium absorption rate, and promoted the cleaner chrome retanning process, which satisfied with the overall requirements of modern sustainable leather industry. The formation of AHA and chromium (III) was discussed using Gaussian 16 program to explain the high exhaustion chrome tanning agent mechanism. The work will guide on design and preparation of new high exhaustion chromium tanning agents for clean leather production.

A Cleaner Method for Low-Chrome Tanning with No-Salt Pickling

Abstract:In the present investigation, a cleaner and eco-friendly method to leather tanning process based on a novel pre-tanning agent (Q16) has been developed. Q16 was synthesized by cyanuric chloride and p-aminobenzoic acid, then detected by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR). The combination tannage process of Q16 and chrome (Q16-Cr) was optimized. In comparison with combination tannage of F90- Cr and traditional chrome tanning methods, the physico-chemical characteristics including shrinkage temperature, mechanical properties and organoleptic properties of the tanned leather were analyzed, the micro-morphology of grain surface and cross section which reflect the dispersion and texture of fibre were evaluated. The distribution of chromium in the cross section was detected by Dispersive X-ray Analysis (EDAX), and the chromium concentration was also determined by Inductively Coupled Plasma-Atomic Emission Spectrometry (AES-ICP). The results are shown that the Q16-Cr-tanned leather has better tanning performance even than chrome-tanned leather. The grain surface is smoother and the collagen fibres are well-dispersed. The Q16-Cr tanning method improves the absorption degree of chromium, and Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) is significantly reduced. Hence, this cleaner non-salt pickling method for less chrome tanning process encourages the sustainable development of leather industry and cleaner production.

Abstract:High-performance chrome-free colored leather is an obstacle for the leather industry. Mineral sourced fulvic acid (MFA) is characterized by excellent water solubility and abundant functional groups, such as auxochrome carboxyl, phenolic hydroxyl and chromophore quinonyl. So MFA is commonly used as plant growth regulator and dyeing. In view of this, MFA was firstly extracted from low-value weathered coal, and then a novel chrome-free tanning agent (MFAA) with tanning-dyeing integration was prepared by the coordination of MFA with Al (III). Quantitative analysis showed that the contents of carboxyl and quinonyl in MFA were 9.88 mmol/g and 1.52 mmol/g, respectively. The coordination mechanism between MFA and Al (III) was analyzed by FTIR and XPS. The shrinkage temperature of leather tanned by MFAA was more than 90 °C. The tensile strength and elongation at break reached 33.9 MPa and 114.1 %, respectively, which were higher than those tanned by commercially available organic tanning agents. Meanwhile, the UV–Vis absorption spectrum analysis showed that the dyeing performance of MFAA was different under different coordination rate of MFA with Al (III), so a series of leathers with different colors from dark to brown can be produced on demand. Finally, the recycled MFA from tanning wastewater was applied in the cultivation of rice seeds. The results showed that it could promote the germination rate of seed and the growth of root and stem. Therefore, this research is expected to simultaneously reduce the pollution of Cr 6+ and organic dyes.

Abstract:This paper introduced the leather tanning machine which was designed specially and the research on the ND(no drum) chrome tanning technology by using the leather tanning machine which was new chrome tanning technology and was different from traditional chrome tanning technology by using drum. It was showed that the leather yield of the ND chrome tanning technology was increased; the leather damages of the ND chrome tanning technology were covered, so the leather surface was beautified, and the leather use ratio was increased; the spent chrome liquid of the ND chrome tanning technology was recycled easily; the energy was saved, energy consumption of tannage was decreased.

Abstract:In this study, a two-step green and clean tanning technology based on the polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane sodium carboxylate (POSS-COONa) and zirconium was studied to relieve the environmental pressure and resource strain caused by chrome tanning. Firstly, amino sesquisiloxane was prepared from γ-aminopropyl triethoxy silane by hydrolysis and condensation method, and then was substituted with sodium chloroacetate to form POSS-COONa. The POSS-COONa had crystallinity and maintained cube structure by X-ray Diffraction (XRD) and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM). Subsequently, POSS-COONa combined with zirconium sulfate was applied in tanning process of goat skin. Compared with untanning, chrome tanning, zirconium tanning crust leather, the shrinkage temperature and thickening rate of combination tanning crust leather were 90.5 °C and 118.3 %, respectively. The tensile strength , tear strength, elongation at break and softness of the combination tanning crust leather were 26.4 MPa, 96.3 N/mm, 105.5 % and 6.5 mm. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) showed that combination tanning crust leather collagen fibers were braided more loosely, and POSS-COONa and zirconium sulfate could be uniformly distributed in the collagen fibers. The isoelectric point of the combination tanning crust leather (∼6.7) was similar to that of chrome tanning crust leather (∼7.7). Based on the above results, POSS-COONa combined with zirconium sulfate tanning has a broad prospect in green clean production.

Abstract:The leather manufacturing industry is increasingly embracing chrome-free tanning methods to promote environmental sustainability. However, the transition to chrome-free tanning systems presents a notable obstacle: the incompatibility of traditional anionic wet finishing materials with chrome-free tanned leather due to differences in surface electrical behavior. Herein, an amphoteric polymer, referred to P(AA-co-DMAEMA-co-DA), was synthesized through a simple one-step free radical copolymerization using acrylic acid (AA), dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA), and dodecyl acrylate (DA). Notably, the isoelectric point of P(AA-co-DMAEMA-co-DA) is 7.7, which contributes to improving the leather's positive electric property and enhancing the binding between the amphoteric polymer fatliquors (APF) and collagen fiber. The APF achieves a remarkable absorption rate of 96.2% and a dyeing uptake rate of 94.3% for anionic dyes, resulting in a uniformly bright surface color of the dyed leather and further significantly reducing the dye usage. Overall, the comprehensive properties of APF align with the electrical origins of organic chrome-free tanning leather, exhibiting a pronounced fatliquoring effect while reducing the dye content in the waste liquor. This contribution holds promise for advancing chrome-free tanning technology toward greener environmental practices.

Abstract:The effect of chrome content in chrome tanning liquid on the physical and mechanical properties of leather when using the specially designed leather tanning machine were studied and the leather was characterized by EDS and SEM. The results showed that, considering the chrome content in leather and the physical and mechanical properties of leather, the best chrome content in the chrome tanning liquid was 16g/L. The EDS results showed that the distribution of chrome in leather was relatively uniform. The SEM results showed that the collagen fibre dispersion of leather tanned with the leather tanning machine was better than the leather tanned by drum.

Abstract:Chromium and chloride are the staple pollutants in chrome tanning process due to the inclusion of common salt and chrome tanning agent. To reduce the environmental impacts of chrome tanning, a salt-free chromium tanning technology has been developed and optimized based on the collective treatment of polyoxyethylene diepoxy ether and urotropine on laboratory as well as on pilot scale. The results indicated that, without the application of sodium chloride, the pelts could be protected from acidic swelling in pickling and chrome tanning by the treatment of polyoxyethylene diepoxy ether, catalyzed by urotropine. Being superior to conventional processes, chrome tanning process could be conducted in the novel pickling conditions and during the course of experimentation the chromium uptake rate was increased to 96.0% from 74.3%, the Cr offering was decreased to 0.53% from 1.16% whereas, the residual Cr concentration in the spent chrome tanning liquors was cut down to 77.1 mg/L from 1083.3 mg/L around. The emissions of chemical oxygen demand and total dissolved solid were also lessened by 15% and 42%. In the course of pilot scale experiments, the organoleptic and mechanical properties were found to be similar with the ones from conventional ones. This investigation provides an improved assimilated method of leather making with the complete elimination of sodium chloride in pickling and proposes a green pollution free alleyway to the leather industry.

Abstract:In this research, a syntan containing active chlorine groups (SACG) was synthesized by the condensation of phenol sulfonic acid condensation product (PSAC) and cyanuric chloride (TCT). The structure and composition of as-received syntans were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FT-IR), nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H-NMR), and gel permeation chromatography (GPC). The thermal properties and morphology of the tanned leather were analyzed using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and scanning electron microscope (SEM). The results indicated that the multi-point active chlorine groups in syntans had an excellent cross-linking effect on collagen fibers, which increased the shrinkage temperature of leather to 81.6 °C. The tensile strength, the tearing strength, and the thickening rate of the tanned leather were 14.26 MPa, 42.56 N/mm, and 78.3%, respectively. The tanned leather exhibited flat and fine grain. The collagen fibers showed uniform dispersion. Besides, the SACG had remarkable environmental benefits compared with the traditional chrome tanning system by significantly reducing the content of chemical oxygen demand (COD), total solids (TS), dissolved solids (DS), suspended solids (SS), chloride, and total chromium analyses (TCr) in tannery wastewater and thus could be applied to non-pickling tanning system. Moreover, the SACG tanning technology is a promoting chrome-free tanning technology because of the facile, cost-effective, and environment-friendly performance, suggesting that this technology has great potential to be widely applied in leather manufacturing.

β-Cyclodextrin-Based Chrome-Free Tanning Agent Results in the Sustainable and Cleaner Production of Eco-Leather

Abstract:This study aimed to pioneer the development of an innovative, eco-friendly, and chrome-free tanning agent, with a focus on promoting sustainable practices in ecological leather production. Two novel biomass-derived tanning agents, namely, β-TCD and β-GCD, were synthesized through a one-pot grafting process involving environmentally friendly epoxy monomers: triglycidyl isocyanurate (TGIC) and glycerol triglycidyl ether (GTE). Characterization through various analytical methods, including FTIR, 1H NMR, XPS, GPC, SEM, and TGA, confirmed the successful grafting of TGIC and GTE onto β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) backbones. The resulting β-TCD and β-GCD exhibited notable epoxide values of 0.349 and 0.388 mol/100 g, respectively, along with a broader molecular weight distribution of intermediates. These newly developed tanning agents, β-TCD and β-GCD, were then applied in depickling goatskin tanning experiments. Results indicated that the crust leather tanned with β-TCD and β-GCD displayed favorable thermal stability, with shrinkage temperatures reaching 84 and 82 °C, respectively. Moreover, the thickening rates of the leather exceeded 40%. The crust leathers tanned with β-TCD, and β-GCD demonstrated excellent physical and mechanical properties, as well as notable resistance to yellowing compared to conventional commercial chrome-free tanning agents like TWS and F-90. Overall, this research emphasizes the efficacy of natural cyclodextrin materials as potent and environmentally friendly alternatives to chromium-based tanning agents, showcasing their significant potential in advancing sustainable and cleaner practices in leather production.

Discarded enoki mushroom root-derived multifunctional chrome-free chitosan-based tanning agent for eco-leathers manufacturing: Tanning-dyeing, non-acid soaking, and non-basifying

Abstract:The aim of this study was to develop new discarded enoki mushroom root-derived multifunctional chrome-free chitosan-based tanning agents that can be used for eco-leather manufacturing. In this study, oligochitosan (OCS) was prepared from chitosan extracted from the enoki mushrooms and chemically modified using reactive dye R19 and epichlorohydrin (ECH) to prepare chromium-free tanning agent (OCS-R19-ECH) with both tanning and dyeing functions. FT-IR, XRD, and NMR (1H) confirmed the successful synthesis of the product. The molecular weight of OCS-R19-ECH is 6355 g/mol, with an average particle size of 1249.37 nm and an epoxy value of 0.276 mol/100 g. OCS-R19-ECH was used for tanning experiments on bated sheepskin, and the results showed that the leather tanned with OCS-R19-ECH not only exhibited excellent wet-heat stability (shrinkage temperature = 81 °C), but also superior dyeing uniformity, resistance to dry and wet abrasion, mechanical strength (tensile strength = 12.4 MPa, tear strength = 57.3 N/mm), and outstanding antimicrobial properties. Most importantly, compared with traditional tanning agents, OCS-R19-ECH has a higher pH (9.0), tanning-dyeing integration, non-acid soaking, and non-basifying can be achieved in leather making, which can greatly simplify the tanning processes. This new multifunctional chrome-free chitosan-based tanning agent facilitates high-value utilization of waste resources.

Abstract:Developing alternative tanning agents to avoid the potential environmental and human health risks from the conventional chrome tanning is essential for the leather industry. In this work, we prepared an eco-friendly biomass-based tanning agent dichlorotriazinyl chitooligosaccharide (DTCS) by modifying chitooligosaccharide (COS) with cyanuric chloride (CC) for chrome-free leather manufacture. The synthesis of such biomass-based tanning agent was systematically optimized to obtain the target product with high grafting degree of 67% and weight-average molecular weight (Mw) of 1465 g/mol. The non-pickling tanning procedure using DTCS was investigated, and the interactions between DTCS and collagen fibers were studied. Our results showed that the hydrothermal stability of the tanned leather was significantly increased, i.e., the shrinkage temperature (Ts) exceeding 82.0°C, and the mechanical properties were improved. Moreover, the organoleptic properties of leather (e.g., fullness, softness and grain tightness) exhibited obvious improvement. This research not only offers a reliable approach for cleaner leather manufacturing while addressing the underlying ecological pressure, but also highlights the emerging use of biomass materials in the leather industry.

Study on the properties of Multi-metal Tanning Agents

Abstract:Multi-metal tanning agent was prepared using chromium,aluminum and titanium salts and organic ligand LA as raw materials.Constituents and properties of the Cr-Al-Ti tanning agent were studied.The results showed,under the condition of the dosage of LA at 20% of metals ion mol contents and the mol ratio of n(Cr3+)∶n(Al3+)∶n(Ti4+) being 4∶3∶3,the tanning agent could be produced with saving 60% chrome.The absorption rate of chrome reached 90.3%,much higher than 68.24% of normal chrome tanning.The content of chrome in effluent solution was 0.2365 g/l,only 1/7 content of normal chrome tanning.

Abstract:The leather industry occupies a prominent place in the economy for many developing countries. Imparting requisite properties to leathers at suitable checkpoints in the leather value chain is of utmost significance to meet the quality requirements in concurrence with global market dynamics. Metals play a crucial role in stabilizing the collagen matrix at different stages of leather processing. They also aid in imparting important properties to leathers at the respective stage leading to the enhancement of the end product. The current review critically analyses the role of different metals like chromium, aluminum, titanium and metallic nanocomposites in different unit operations of leather processing. Each metal/ metallic nanocomposite has its own set of advantages and limitations in different dimensions including imparting properties to leathers at the appropriate stage of the process, in terms of availability and extent of environmental hazard. Further, metallic nanocomposites either standalone or in combination with suitable compounds/ extracts are found to have potential applications in the fabrication of good quality leathers and in imparting superior properties like antimicrobial and thermal stability properties. The current study dives into the pool of existing literature available to dedicatedly highlight the uses and challenges involved in using metals and metallic nanocomposites in leather processing, thus serving as a ready-reckoner to researchers working on designing metal-based protein crosslinkers/ stabilizers and finishing elements for the development of value-added leather products.

Abstract:The traditional wet-finishing process for leather manufacturing is complicated and uses numerous chemical additives, limiting the leather industry's development in the direction of energy saving and emission reduction. Integrated with the allegro promotion of chrome-free organic tanning system, amphoteric wet-finishing materials have shown great promise for settling the current issues such as low chemical absorption-rates. Herein, we developed a disruptive "three-in-one" strategy for ecological organic chrome-free leather manufacturing based on the on-demand multifunctional fluorescent amphoteric polymer (referred to as pADD-DMENA). As expected, pADD-DMENA exhibited satisfyingly integrated "three-in-one" origins including retanning, fatliquoring and dyeing properties. Compared to conventional anionic dyed leather, pADD-DMENA dyed leather had a uniformly bright yellow color surface and superior lightfastness, durability, and washability. Furthermore, its fluorescent ontology enabled the visual tracking of pADD-DMENA in crust leather and sewage, allowing for real-time monitoring of pADD-DMENA precise distribution. Notably, because of the "three-in-one" features, pADD-DMENA significantly shortened the conventional wet-finishing process, greatly reducing machining time and demonstrating better environmental conservation of wastewater. To summarize, the development of pADD-DMENA allows the traditional wet finishing process to be completed in one step, effectively simplifying the tanning process, reducing additive of various chemicals, and broadening the way for ecological leather manufacturing in a green direction with low energy consumption and less pollution.
