Abstract:Combining the modified matrix-vector equation approach with the technique of Lyapunov majorant function and the Banach fixed point principle, we obtain new rigorous perturbation bounds for the LU and QR factorizations with normwise or componentwise perturbations in the given matrix, where the componentwise perturbations have the form of backward errors resulting from the standard factorization algorithms. Each of the new rigorous perturbation bounds is a rigorous version of the first-order perturbation bound derived by the matrix-vector equation approach in the literature, and we present their explicit expressions. These bounds improve the results given by Chang and Stehle [SIAM Journal on Matrix Analysis and Applications 2010; 31:2841--2859]. Moreover, we derive new tighter first-order perturbation bounds including two optimal ones for the LU factorization, and provide the explicit expressions of the optimal first-order perturbation bounds for the LU and QR factorizations.

Abstract:The perturbation of the QR decompostion is analyzed from the probalistic point of view. The perturbation error is approximated by a first-order perturbation expansion with high probability where the perturbation is assumed to be random. Different from the previous normwise perturbation bounds using the Frobenius norm, our techniques are used to develop the spectral norm, as well as the entry-wise perturbation bounds for the stochastic perturbation of the QR decomposition. The statistics tends to be tighter (in the sense of the expectation) and more realistic than the classical worst-case perturbation bounds. The novel perturbation bounds are applicable to a wide range of problems in statistics and communications. In this paper, we consider the perturbation bound of the leverage scores under the Gaussian perturbation, the probability guarantees and the error bounds of the low rank matrix recovery, and the upper bound of the errors of the tensor CUR-type decomposition. We also apply our perturbation bounds to improve the robust design of the Tomlinson-Harashima precoding in the Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) system.

Abstract:Classical condition numbers are normwise: they measure the size of both input perturbations and output errors using some norms. To take into account the relative of each data component, and, in particular, a possible data sparseness, componentwise condition numbers have been increasingly considered. These are mostly of two kinds: mixed and componentwise. In this paper, we give explicit expressions, computable from the data, for the mixed and componentwise condition numbers for the computation of the Moore-Penrose inverse as well as for the computation of solutions and residues of linear least squares problems. In both cases the data matrices have full column ( row) rank.

Abstract: By defining two important terms called basic perturbation vectors and obtaining their linear bounds, we obtain the linear componentwise perturbation bounds for unitary factors and upper triangular factors of the generalized schur decomposition. The perturbation bounds for the diagonal elements of the upper triangular factors and the generalized invariant subspace are also derived. From the former, we present an upper bound and a condition number of the generalized eigenvalue. Furthermore, with numerical iterative method, the nonlinear componentwise perturbation bounds of the generalized Schur decomposition are also provided. Numerical examples are given to test the obtained bounds. Among them, we compare our upper bound and condition number of the generalized eigenvalue with their counterparts given in the literature. Numerical results show that they are very close to each other but our results don't need to calculate the left and right eigenvectors.

Abstract:Some new rigorous perturbation bounds for the Cholesky-like factorization of skew-symmetric matrix are obtained when the original matrix has the normwise or componentwise perturbations, where the componentwise perturbation has the form of backward rounding error for the Cholesky-like factorization algorithm. These bounds can be much tighter than the existing one. Two numerical examples are provided to illustrate these results.

Abstract:We present a componentwise perturbation analysis for the continuous-time Sylvester equations. Componentwise, mixed condition numbers and new perturbation bounds are derived for the matrix equations. The small sample statistical method can also be applied for the condition estimation. These condition numbers and perturbation bounds are tested on numerical examples and compared with the normwise condition number. Abstract:QR factorization is a key tool in mathematics, computer science, operations research, and engineering. This paper presents the roundoff-error-free (REF) QR factorization framework comprising integer-preserving versions of the standard and the thin QR factorizations and associated algorithms to compute them. Specifically, the standard REF QR factorization factors a given matrix as , where has pairwise orthogonal columns, D is a diagonal matrix, and is an upper trapezoidal matrix; notably, the entries of Q and R are integral, while the entries of D are reciprocals of integers. In the thin REF QR factorization, also has pairwise orthogonal columns, and is also an upper triangular matrix. In contrast to traditional (i.e., floating-point) QR factorizations, every operation used to compute these factors is integral; thus, REF QR is guaranteed to be an exact orthogonal decomposition. Importantly, the bit-length of every entry in the REF QR factorizations (and within the algorithms to compute them) is bounded polynomially. Notable applications of our REF QR factorizations include finding exact least squares or exact basic solutions, , to any given full column rank or rank deficient linear system , respectively. In addition, our exact factorizations can be used as a subroutine within exact and/or high-precision quadratic programming. Altogether, REF QR provides a framework to obtain exact orthogonal factorizations of any rational matrix (as any rational/decimal matrix can be easily transformed into an integral matrix).

Abstract:In this paper, we extend the work of Liesen et al. (2002), which analyzes how the condition number of an orthonormal matrix Q changes when a column is added ([Q, c]), particularly focusing on the perpendicularity of c to the span of Q. Their result, presented in Theorem 2.3 of Liesen et al. (2002), assumes exact arithmetic and orthonormality of Q, which is a strong assumption when applying these results to numerical methods such as QR factorization algorithms. In our work, we address this gap by deriving bounds on the condition number increase for a matrix B without assuming perfect orthonormality, even when a column is not perfectly orthogonal to the span of B. This framework allows us to analyze QR factorization methods where orthogonalization is imperfect and subject to Gaussian noise. We also provide results on the performance of orthogonal projection and least squares under Gaussian noise, further supporting the development of this theory.
