Abstract:Two enantiopure one-dimensional complexes with helical structures, [Mn(3)((R,R)-Salcy)(3)(H2O)(2)Fe(CN)(6).2H2O]n (1) and [Mn(3)((S,S)-Salcy)(3)(H2O)(2)Fe(CN)(6).2H2O]n (2) [Salcy = N,N'-(1,2-cyclohexanediylethylene)bis(salicylideneiminato) dianion], have been synthesized and characterized. Magnetic studies show that both complexes are ferrimagnets with the magnetic transition temperature at 3 K.

Abstract:A pair of enantiopure star-shaped Fe(III)(4) clusters were constructed from simple chiral ligands. AC field frequency dependence and a hysteresis loop, which are very important features of SMMs, were observed. Circular dichroism (CD) spectra demonstrated that the chirality was successfully transferred from the ligand to the coordination environment of Fe(3+) ions.

Abstract:The synthesis, single-crystal structures and magnetic properties of two new double-zigzag-chain cyano-bridged heterobimetallic {[MІІ(Py-NOH)2][FeІІІ(Tp*)(CN)3]2}·H2O ([FeIII2MII]) (Py-NOH = 4-pyridinealdoxime, Tp* = tris(3,5-dimethylpyrazol-1-yl)borohydride, M = Ni (1), Fe (2)) compounds are reported. The crystal structures of both compounds were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Complexes 1 and 2 are isostructural, with the crystal structure comprising neutral double-zigzag (4,2-ribbon-like) bimetallic chains. The FeIII ion is coordinated by three cyanide carbon atoms and three nitrogen atoms of Tp* anions. However, the MII ion is surrounded by four cyanide nitrogen atoms and two nitrogen atoms from two Py-NOH ligands. The crystal structures and magnetic studies demonstrate that both complexes behave as single-chain magnetic (SCM) with intrachain ferromagnetic coupling. Furthermore, [FeIII2NiII] exhibits an excellent coercive field of 0.42 T at 1.8 K, among cyano-bridged 3d transition-metal-based SCMs reported thus far. Preliminary theoretical calculations provide a deep understanding of the magnetic properties of [FeIII2NiII].

Abstract:The isostructural, chiral molecular magnetic materials with the formula [MxM'(2-x)(ca)2(1,4-dimb)]n [H2ca = D-(+)-camphoric acid, 1,4-dimb = 1,4-di-(1-imidazolyl-methyl)-benzene, M = Ni(II), M' = CoII, 0 < or = x < or = 2] consist of ca-bridged (4,4) layers with [M2(O2CR)4] as secondary building units that are pillared by the 1,4-dimb ligands into a unique 3D framework. The high-spin octahedral symmetry and the proportions of the mixed-metal ions were characterized by UV-vis spectroscopy. The compounds exhibit the onset of antiferromagnetic ordering at 7.5 approximately 23 K, as well as weak ferromagnetism, spin-flop, and glassy behavior that result from the randomness of the mixed-metal pairs, magnetic anisotropy of the metallic cations, and antisymmetric exchange. The composites should be regarded as molecular alloys of the pure Ni(II) and Co(II) compounds. The magnetic behavior of the solid solutions shows unambiguously that the organic bridges, bond angles, and bond distances greatly influence the effective interactions and bring about cooperative magnetic behavior in the chiral 3D frameworks.

Abstract:Two couples of enantiomerically pure chiral cyano-bridged heterobimetallic one-dimensional (1D) chain complexes: [Mn((R,R)-Salphen)Fe(Tp)(CN)3] n (1) and [Mn((S,S)-Salphen)Te(Tp)(CN)3] n (2) (Salphen = N,N’-1,2-diphenylethylenebis (salicylideneiminato) dianion, Tp = tris(pyrazolyl) hydroborate), [Mn((R,R)-Salphen)Fe(Tp*)(CN)3·2H2O] n (3) and [Mn((S,S)-Salphen)Fe(Tp*)(CN)3·2H2O] n (4) (Tp* = hydridotris (3,5-dimethylpyrazol-1-yl) borate), have been successfully synthesized by the reactions of MnIII schiff-base complexes with the tricyanometalate building block, [(LTp)Fe(CN)3]− (LTp = Tp or Tp*). All complexes are made up of neutral cyano-bridged zigzag double chains with (-Fe-C≡N-Mn-N≡C-) n as the repeating unit. Circular dichroism (CD) spectra confirm the enantiomeric nature of the optically active complexes. Magnetic studies demonstrate that ferromagnetic interactions are operative in these complexes. The ferromagnetic couplings become weak in the chains with the bending of the Mn-N≡C angles.

Abstract:Two cyano-bridged Ni(II)-Fe(III) complexes {(H3O)[Ni(H2L)](2)[Fe(CN)(6)](2).[Fe(CN)(6)].6H(2)O}(n) (1) and [K(18-C-6)(H2O)2]-[Ni(H2L)](2)[Fe(CN)(6)](3).4(18-C-6).20H(2)O (2) (L = 3,10-bis(2-aminoethyl)-1,3,6,8,10,12-hexaazacyclotetradecane, 18-C-6 = 18-crown-6-ether) have been synthesized and characterized structurally and magnetically. Complex 1 has a zigzag one-dimensional structure, in which two trans-CN- ligands of each [Fe(CN)(6)](3-) link two trans-[Ni(H2L)](4+) groups, and in turn, each trans-[Ni(H2L)](4+) links two [Fe(CN)(6)](3-) in a trans fashion. Complex 2 is composed of cyano-bridged pentanuclear molecules with moieties connected by the trans-CN- ligands of [Fe(CN)(6)](3-). Magnetic studies show the existence of ferromagnetic Ni(II)-Fe(III) interactions in both complexes. The intermetallic magnetic coupling constant of both complexes was analyzed by using an approximate model on the basis of the structural features.
Three New MnII-[MoIII(CN)7]4- Molecular Magnets Constructed from Chiral Bidentate Chelating Ligands

Abstract:Three new cyanide-bridged compounds {[Mn((S,S)-Dpen)]3[Mn((S,S)-Dpen)(H2O)][Mo(CN)7]2·4H2O·4C2H3N}n (1-SS), {[Mn((R,R)-Dpen)]3[Mn((R,R)-Dpen)(H2O)][Mo(CN)7]2·4.5H2O·4C2H3N}n (1-RR), and {[Mn(Chxn)][Mn(Chxn)(H2O)0.8][Mo(CN)7]·H2O·4C2H3N}n (2) (SS/RR-Dpen = (S,S)/(R,R)-1,2-diphenylethylenediamine and Chxn = 1,2-cyclohexanediamine) have been successfully synthesized from the self-assembly reaction of the [MoIII(CN)7]4- unit, the MnII ions, and two chiral bidentate chelating ligands. Single-crystal structure determinations show that compounds 1-SS and 1-RR containing ligands SS/RR-Dpen are enantiomers and crystallize in the chiral space group P21. On the other hand, compound 2 crystallizes in the achiral centrosymmetric space group P1̄ due to the racemization of the SS/RR-Chxn ligands during the growth of the crystals. Despite their different space groups and ligands, all three compounds exhibit similar framework structures consisting of cyano-bridged MnII-MoIII two-dimensional layers separated by the bidentate ligands. The circular dichroism (CD) spectra have further demonstrated the enantiopure character of compounds 1-SS and 1-RR. Magnetic measurements revealed that all three compounds display ferrimagnetic ordering with similar critical temperatures of about 40 K. The chiral enantiomers 1-SS and 1-RR exhibit the magnetic hysteresis loop with a coercive field of about 8000 Oe at 2 K, which is by far the highest for all known MnII-[MoIII(CN)7]4- magnets. Analyses of their structures and magnetic properties indicated that their magnetic properties depend on the anisotropic magnetic interactions between the MnII and MoIII centers, which are closely related to the C-N-M bond angles.

Abstract:A novel multi-channel barcode module was developed by using chiral co-crystals which contain field-induced SMM behavior and different emission bands. The chiral co-crystals [Zn(H2L)Dy(DBM)2]4(ClO4)4⋅9CH3OH⋅H2O (1a) and [Zn(H2L)Dy(DBM)2]4(ClO4)4⋅8CH3OH⋅0.5H2O (1b) (H4L = 2,2′-[1,2-ethanediylbis[(hydroxyethylimino)methylene]]bis[6-methoxy-4-methyl-phenol], HDBM = dibenzoylmethane) were obtained through one-pot reaction of ZnII and DyIII with the achiral ligands H4L and HDBM. X-ray single crystal diffraction and CD spectroscopy confirmed that they are enantiomers crystallized in P43 (1a) and P41 (1b), both consisting of two ∆-[Zn(H2L)Dy(DBM)2]+ cations, two Λ-[Zn(H2L)Dy(DBM)2]+ cations and four (ClO4)− anions. The presence of DyIII ions endow them with the property of field-induced slow magnetic relaxation. The relatively low energy barrier of 35.0(9) K for complex 1 may be due to the poor axiality of the ligand field caused by the long Dy-Ophenoxy bond lengths and the small Ophenoxy-Dy-Ophenoxy bond angles. Moreover, when the organic ligands H4L (λex = 350 nm) and DyIII (λex = 420 nm) are excited, different emission spectra are observed.

Abstract:Two pairs of chiral end-on azido-bridged dinuclear hexaazamacrocycles, [Dy2 (LN6 R/S )2 (N3 )2 Cl2 ](BPh4 )2 (1R/1S) and [Dy2 (LN6 R/S )2 (N3 )4 ]Cl2 (2R/2S) (LN6 R/S is hexaazamacrocyclic neutral Schiff base ligand derived from 2,6-diformylpyridine and (1R, 2R)/(1S, 2S)-diaminocyclohexane), were constructed by adjusting the molar ratio of sodium azide to Dy(III) macrocycle precursor. Structural analyses reveal that all Dy(III) centers in complexes 1R/1S and 2R/2S are nine-coordinate with hula-loop coordination geometry, and the differences between 1R/1S and 2R/2S are the terminal coordination anion and counter anion. Magnetic studies indicate that complex 2S displays typical SMM behaviors under a zero dc field, whereas 1S just shows slow relaxation of magnetization resulting from a relatively weak axial crystal field. Significantly, complex 2R/2S represents the first homochiral all-nitrogen-coordinated lanthanide single-molecule magnet.

Abstract:The π-conjugated tetrathiafulvalene (TTF) annulated ligand was introduced into a dicyanometallate for the first time, leading to the synthesis of the versatile redox-active dicyanideferrite building block [(n-Bu)4N][Fe(TTFbp)(CN)2] (H2TTFbp = N-(2-(4,5-bis(methylthio)-1,3-dithiol-2-ylidene)-5-(picolinamido) benzo[d][1,3]dithiol-6-yl) picol inamide). The incorporation of the new precursor with chiral MnIII Schiff-base complexes resulted in two enantiopure one-dimensional complexes, [Mn((R,R)-salphen)Fe(TTFbp)(CN)2]n (2-(RR)) and [Mn((S,S)-salphen)Fe(TTFbp)(CN)2]n (2-(SS)) (Salphen = N,N'-1,2-diphenylethylene-bis(salicylideneiminato) dianion), which were synthesized and structurally characterized. Circular dichroism (CD) and vibrational circular dichroism (VCD) spectra confirmed the enantiomeric nature of the optically active complexes, and structural analyses revealed the formation of neutral cyanide-bridged double chains in 2-(RR) and 2-(SS). Solution and solid state CV studies revealed the redox-active characteristics of the complexes. Antiferromagnetic couplings were detected between FeIII and MnIII centers within a chain, and a field-induced magnetic phase transition was observed (TN = 4.8 K). The introduction of electroactivity and chirality into cyanide-bridged complexes with interesting magnetic properties leads the way towards new multifunctional materials.

Abstract:Reaction of [Mn(TTF-salphen)][OAc] (TTF-salphen 2− =2,2′-((2-(4,5-bis(methylthio)-1,3-dithiol-2-ylidene)-1,3-benzodithiole-5,6-diyl)bis(nitrilomethylidyne)bis(phenolate)dianion) and the cyanometalate building blocks [ n -Bu 4 N][(Tp)Fe(CN) 3 ] (Tp − =Tris(pyrazolyl)hydroborate) or [ n -Bu 4 N][Ru(salen)(CN) 2 ] (salen 2− = N , N ′-ethylenebis(salicylideneimine)dianion) resulted in the formation of two redox-active complexes, the dinuclear heterometallic complex [(Tp)Fe(CN) 3 Mn(TTF-salphen)·CH 3 OH] ( 1 ) and the one dimensional complex [Ru(salen)(CN) 2 Mn(TTF-salphen)] n ( 2 ). Both complexes were characterized by X-ray crystallography and solid state electrochemistry, in addition to static and dynamic magnetic measurements. Antiferromagnetic couplings are found to be operative between metal ion centers bridged by cyanide in both complexes. Complex 1 exhibited field-induced SMM behavior with an energy barrier of 13.8 K. The introduction of the redox-active TTF unit into cyanide-bridged complexes with interesting magnetic properties renders them promising candidates for the construction of new hybrid inorganic-organic materials.
Chiral Effect on the Electrochemistry of Magnetic Ferrite Colloidal Nanocrystal Assembly Modified by Amino Acids

Abstract:Chirality on the molecular or nanometer scale is particularly significant in chemistry, materials science, and biomedicine. Chiral electrochemical reactions on solid surfaces are currently a hot research topic. Herein, a chiral solid surface is constructed in aqueous solutions by mixing chiral molecules, d- and l-glutamic, with γ-Fe2O3 and Fe3O4 nanoparticles (NPs) and MnFe2O4 colloidal nanocrystal assembly (CNA). Cyclic voltammetry and differential pulse voltammetry measurements are conducted in a phosphate buffer solution (PBS) containing ascorbic acid (AA) or isoascorbic acid (IAA), and a chiral effect appears on the electroreduction of ferric ions of amino acid-modified magnetic samples. A negative or positive potential shift is observed, respectively, for magnetic structures modified by l- and d-glutamic acid in aqueous AA electrolyte, while the opposite is observed for these samples in IAA electrolyte. The reduction peak current increases by 0.8-1.2 times for the electrodes modified with l- and d-glutamate molecules, improving the electron transport efficiency. The chiral effect is absent when the electrolytes contain achiral uric acid or dopamine, or even chiral l-/d-/ld-tartaric acid. The chiral recognition between d-/l-glutamic acid and AA/IAA at the electrochemical interface is suggested to be related to their spinal configurations. These observations will be helpful for the rational design of inorganic functional chiral micro/nanostructures.

Abstract:Spin polarisation is found in the centrosymmetric nonferromagnetic crystals, chiral mesostructured NiO films (CMNFs), fabricated through the symmetry-breaking effect of a chiral molecule. Two levels of chirality were identified: primary nanoflakes with atomically twisted crystal lattices and secondary helical stacking of the nanoflakes. Spin polarisation of the CMNFs was confirmed by chirality-dependent magnetic-tip conducting atomic force microscopy (mc-AFM) and magnetic field-independent magnetic circular dichroism (MCD). Electron transfer in the symmetry-breaking electric field was speculated to create chirality-dependent effective magnetic fields. The asymmetric spin-orbit coupling (SOC) generated by effective magnetic fields selectively modifies the opposite spin motion in the antipodal CMNFs. Our findings provide fundamental insights for directional spin control in unprecedented functional inorganic materials.
Circularly Polarized Luminescence and Magneto-Optic Effects from Chiral Dy(III) Single Molecule Magnets

Abstract:A new pair of multifunctional Zn(II)-Dy(III) enantiomers based on the chiral Schiff-base ligands [R,R-ZnLDy (H2O)(NO3)(3)] (1R2R-ZnDy) and [S,S-ZnLDy(H2O)(NO3)(3)] (1S2S-ZnDy) (H2L = phenol, 2,2'-[[(1R,2R/1S,2S)-1,2-diphenyl-1,2-ethanediyl]bis[(E)-nitrilomethylidyne]]bis[6-methoxy]) was synthesized and characterized. Magnetic studies indicate that 1R2R-ZnDy behaves as a single-molecule magnet. Enantiomers 1R2R-ZnDy and 1S2S-ZnDy show chiroptical activity and circularly polarized luminescence in the N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) solution. The chiral Zn(II)-Dy(III) complexes display magnetic circular dichroism signals at room temperature. Accordingly, these complexes will inspire intriguing research on singlemolecule magnets with circular polarization of luminescence activity and magneto-optic effects, which will give new clues to design multifunctional molecular magnetic materials.
