Abstract:Three new cyano-bridged Fe-II-Mo(III )complexes assembled from the [Mo-III(CN)(7)](4- )unit, FeII ions, and three pentadentate N3O2 ligands, namely {[Fe2H3(dapab)(2)][Mo(CN)(6)]}n. 2H(2)O.3.5MeCN (1), [Fe(H(2)dapb)(H2O)][Fe(Hdapb)(H2O)][Mo-(CN)(6)].4H(2)O.3MeCN (2), and [Fe(H(2)dapba)(H2O)](2)[Mo(CN)(7)]. 6H(2)O (3) (H(2)dapab = 2,6-diacetylpyridine bis(2-aminobenzoylhydrazone), H(2)dapb = 2,6-diacetylpyridine bis(benzoylhydrazone), H(2)dapba = 2,6-diacetylpyridine bis(4-aminobenzoylhydrazone)), have been synthesized and characterized. Single-crystal structure analyses suggest that complex 1 contains a one-dimensional (1D) chain structure where two FeII ions are bridged by the in situ generated [Mo-III(CN)(6)](3-) unit through two trans-cyanide groups into trinuclear (Fe2MoIII)-Mo-II clusters that are further linked by the amino of the ligand into an infinite chain. Complexes 2 and 3 are cyano-bridged (Fe2MoIII)-Mo-II trinuclear clusters with two FeII ions connected by the [Mo-III(CN)(6)](3)- and [Mo-III(CN)(7)](4-) units, respectively. Direct current magnetic studies confirmed the ferromagnetic interactions between the cyano-bridged FeII and MoIII centers and significant easy-axis magnetic anisotropy for all three complexes. Furthermore, complexes 1-3 exhibit slow magnetic relaxation under a zero dc field, with relaxation barriers of 42.3, 21.6, and 14.4 K, respectively, making them the first examples of cyano-bridged Fe-II-Mo-III single-molecule magnets.

Abstract:The reaction of mononuclear [Co-II(Me(6)tren)Cl](+) precursors and diamagnetic [Fe-II(CN)(6)](4-) building blocks affords a cyanide-bridged hexanuclear FeCo5 complex featuring square-pyramidal architecture. The dc magnetic susceptibility data and theoretical calculations reveal that the complex exhibits a well-isolated S = 15/2 ground state composed of c-coupled S = 3/2 Co2+ ions. The ac magnetic susceptibility data further reveal that the complex exhibits slow magnetic relaxation under an applied field due to the presence of considerable easy-axis magnetic anisotropy of the five Co2+ ions. As far as is known, complex FeCo5 is the first square-pyramidal hexanuclear single-ion magnet.

Abstract:The synthesis, single-crystal structures and magnetic properties of two new double-zigzag-chain cyano-bridged heterobimetallic {[MІІ(Py-NOH)2][FeІІІ(Tp*)(CN)3]2}·H2O ([FeIII2MII]) (Py-NOH = 4-pyridinealdoxime, Tp* = tris(3,5-dimethylpyrazol-1-yl)borohydride, M = Ni (1), Fe (2)) compounds are reported. The crystal structures of both compounds were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Complexes 1 and 2 are isostructural, with the crystal structure comprising neutral double-zigzag (4,2-ribbon-like) bimetallic chains. The FeIII ion is coordinated by three cyanide carbon atoms and three nitrogen atoms of Tp* anions. However, the MII ion is surrounded by four cyanide nitrogen atoms and two nitrogen atoms from two Py-NOH ligands. The crystal structures and magnetic studies demonstrate that both complexes behave as single-chain magnetic (SCM) with intrachain ferromagnetic coupling. Furthermore, [FeIII2NiII] exhibits an excellent coercive field of 0.42 T at 1.8 K, among cyano-bridged 3d transition-metal-based SCMs reported thus far. Preliminary theoretical calculations provide a deep understanding of the magnetic properties of [FeIII2NiII].

A novel molecular-based ferromagnet - Cyano-bridged Cu(I)-Fe(I) complex

Abstract:A new molecular-based ferrornagnet [Cu(en)]3[Fe(CN)6]2·3H2O has been synthesized and characterized. Variable-temperature magnetic susceptibility, zero-field-cooled magnetization (ZFCM), field-cooled-magnetization ( FCM ) and the hysteresis loop measurements show that a ferromagnetic interaction exists between the copper(II) and iron(III) ions. The critical phase-transition temperature, coercive force and remnant magnetization are 11.0K, 20 × 10-4T, and 1.70 × 10 cm3 · mol-1 · T respectively. To our knowledge, the present complex is the first example with a Tc value for the hybrid type copper(II - iron(III) complexes.

Abstract:Two cyanide-bridged compounds based on the Fe-II cation and the anisotropic [Mo-III(CN)(7)](4-) anion, namely, {Fe-2(H2O)(5)[Mo(CN)(7)]. 5H(2)O}(n) (1) and {[NH2(CH3)(2)](2)Fe-5(H2O)(10) [Mo(CN)(7)](3)center dot 8H(2)O}(n) (2), have been prepared. Single crystal X-ray analyses revealed that their structures exhibit different three-dimensional topologies as a result of the addition of [NH2(CH3)(2)](+) during the synthesis of 2. For both 1 and 2, the geometry of the [Mo(CN)(7)](4-) unit is a slightly distorted capped trigonal prism; all Fe-II centers are hexacoordinate and adopt a distorted octahedral configuration. Compound 1 is a three-nodal 3,4,7-connected net with the point symbol of {4.6(2)}{4(5).6}{4(6).6(12).8(3)}, while compound 2 is a five-nodal 4,4,4,6,7-connected net with the point symbol of {4(4).6(2)}{4(5).6}(4){4(6).6(7).8(2)}{4(9).6(11).8}(2). magnetic studies revealed that both compounds exhibit magnetic ordering below 65 K. Apart from the plethora of Mn-II-[Mo(CN)(7)](4-) compounds documented in the literature, these two Fe-II-[Mo(CN)(7)](4-) compounds are the only other [Mo(CN)(7)](4-) extended structures to be characterized by single crystal structures to date.

Abstract:A pair of enantiopure star-shaped Fe(III)(4) clusters were constructed from simple chiral ligands. AC field frequency dependence and a hysteresis loop, which are very important features of SMMs, were observed. Circular dichroism (CD) spectra demonstrated that the chirality was successfully transferred from the ligand to the coordination environment of Fe(3+) ions.

Abstract:Reaction of [Mn(TTF-salphen)][OAc] (TTF-salphen 2− =2,2′-((2-(4,5-bis(methylthio)-1,3-dithiol-2-ylidene)-1,3-benzodithiole-5,6-diyl)bis(nitrilomethylidyne)bis(phenolate)dianion) and the cyanometalate building blocks [ n -Bu 4 N][(Tp)Fe(CN) 3 ] (Tp − =Tris(pyrazolyl)hydroborate) or [ n -Bu 4 N][Ru(salen)(CN) 2 ] (salen 2− = N , N ′-ethylenebis(salicylideneimine)dianion) resulted in the formation of two redox-active complexes, the dinuclear heterometallic complex [(Tp)Fe(CN) 3 Mn(TTF-salphen)·CH 3 OH] ( 1 ) and the one dimensional complex [Ru(salen)(CN) 2 Mn(TTF-salphen)] n ( 2 ). Both complexes were characterized by X-ray crystallography and solid state electrochemistry, in addition to static and dynamic magnetic measurements. Antiferromagnetic couplings are found to be operative between metal ion centers bridged by cyanide in both complexes. Complex 1 exhibited field-induced SMM behavior with an energy barrier of 13.8 K. The introduction of the redox-active TTF unit into cyanide-bridged complexes with interesting magnetic properties renders them promising candidates for the construction of new hybrid inorganic-organic materials.

Abstract:A new cynao-bridged Sm-III-Fe-III. bimetallic coordination olymer has been prepared by the reaction of (n-Bu4N)(3)Fe(CN)(6) and Sm(NO3)(3) center dot 6H(2)O in a DMF-H2O media. The complex consists of alternate Sm(DMF)(4)(H2O)(2) and Fe(CN)(6) units bridged by two cis-cyano ligands to form a zigzag chain. It behaves as a molecule-based magnet with T-c = 3.4 K. At 2 K, hysteresis was observed with a coercive field of 200 Oe.

Abstract:Two tricyanometallate precursors, (Bu4N)[(Tp4Bo)Fe(CN)3].H2O.2MeCN (1) and (Bu4N)[(pzTp)Fe(CN)3] (2) [Bu4N+ = tetrabutylammonium cation; Tp4Bo = tris(indazolyl)hydroborate; pzTp = tetrakis(pyrazolyl)borate], with a low-spin FeIII center have been synthesized and characterized. The reactions of 1 or 2 with [Cu(Me3tacn)(H2O)2](ClO4)2 (Me3tacn = N,N',N' '-trimethyl-1,4,7-triazacyclononane) afford two pentanuclear cyano-bridged clusters, [(Tp4Bo)2(Me3tacn)3Cu3Fe2(CN)6](ClO4)4.5H2O (3) and [(pzTp)2(Me3tacn)3Cu3Fe2(CN)6](ClO4)4.4H2O (4), respectively. Assembly reactions between 2 and [Ni(phen)(CH3OH)4](ClO4)2 (phen = 1,10-phenanthroline) or Zn(OAc)2.2H2O afford a molecular box [(pzTp)4(phen)4Ni4Fe4(CH3OH)4(CN)12](ClO4)4.4H2O (5) and a rectangular cluster [(pzTp)2Zn2Fe2(OAc)2(H2O)2(CN)6] (6). Their molecular structures were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. In complexes 1 and 2, the central FeIII ions are coordinated by three cyanide carbon atoms and three nitrogen atoms of Tp4Bo- or pzTp-. Both complexes 3 and 4 show a trigonal-bipyramidal geometry, in which [(L)Fe(CN)3]- units occupy the apical positions and are linked through cyanide to [Cu(Me3tacn)]2+ units situated in the equatorial plane. Complex 5 possesses a cubic arrangement of eight metal irons linked through edge-spanning cyanide bridges, while complex 6 shows Zn2Fe2(CN)4 rectangular structure, in which FeIII and ZnII ions are alternately bridged by the cyanide groups. Intramolecular ferromagnetic couplings are observed for complexes 3-5, and they have S = 5/2, 5/2, and 6 ground states and appreciable magnetic anisotropies with negative D values equal to -0.49, -2.39, and -0.39 cm-1, respectively.

Abstract:Two cyano-bridged Ni(II)-Fe(III) complexes {(H3O)[Ni(H2L)](2)[Fe(CN)(6)](2).[Fe(CN)(6)].6H(2)O}(n) (1) and [K(18-C-6)(H2O)2]-[Ni(H2L)](2)[Fe(CN)(6)](3).4(18-C-6).20H(2)O (2) (L = 3,10-bis(2-aminoethyl)-1,3,6,8,10,12-hexaazacyclotetradecane, 18-C-6 = 18-crown-6-ether) have been synthesized and characterized structurally and magnetically. Complex 1 has a zigzag one-dimensional structure, in which two trans-CN- ligands of each [Fe(CN)(6)](3-) link two trans-[Ni(H2L)](4+) groups, and in turn, each trans-[Ni(H2L)](4+) links two [Fe(CN)(6)](3-) in a trans fashion. Complex 2 is composed of cyano-bridged pentanuclear molecules with moieties connected by the trans-CN- ligands of [Fe(CN)(6)](3-). Magnetic studies show the existence of ferromagnetic Ni(II)-Fe(III) interactions in both complexes. The intermetallic magnetic coupling constant of both complexes was analyzed by using an approximate model on the basis of the structural features.

Abstract:Three trinuclear Mn2Mo molecules based on the orbitally degenerate [Mo(CN)7](4-) anion were prepared, one of which is the first single-molecule magnet (SMM) based on heptacyanomolybdate. The blocking temperature and the energy barrier (U = 40.5 cm(-1)) are records for a cyanide-based SMM. Wide hysteresis loops and sharp quantum tunneling steps were observed from single-crystal measurements.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with room-temperature magnetism are highly desirable but challenging due to the weak superexchange interaction between metal atoms. For this purpose, strengthening the hybridization between metal ion and organic linkage presents an experiment-feasible chemical solution to enhance the Curie temperature. Here, we report three 2D Cr(II) aromatic heterocyclic MOF magnets with enhanced Curie temperature by bridging Cr(II) ions with pyrazine, 1,4-diphosphinine, and 1,4-diarsenin linkers, i.e., Cr(pyz)2, Cr(diphos)2, and Cr(diarse)2, and using first-principles calculations. Our results show that Cr(pyz)2, Cr(diphos)2, and Cr(diarse)2 are ferrimagnetic semiconductors. In particular, the Curie temperature of Cr(pyz)2 is estimated to be about 344 K and could be enhanced to 512 and 437 K in Cr(diphos)2 and Cr(diarse)2 by strengthening the hybridization between Cr ions and organic linkers via d-π* direct exchange interaction. This study presents a prototype to obtain room-temperature magnetism in 2D Cr(II)-based MOF magnets for nanoscale spintronics applications.

Abstract:Four cyanide-bridged bimetallic Ni(II)–Fe(III) complexes have been synthesized and characterized in order to find new molecular materials with interesting magnetic properties. One-dimensional complexes of pentacyanoferrite(III), [Ni(2,3,2-tet)Fe(Him)(CN)5]·3H2O (1), [Ni(3,2,3-tet)][Fe(CN)5(Him)]·2H2O (2), [Ni(3,2,3-tet)][Fe(CN)5(1-CH3im)]·4H2O (3), and [NiL1][Fe(CN)5(1-CH3im)]·3H2O (4) have been prepared and characterized by X-ray single-crystal structure analysis and magnetic measurements. All complexes possesses linear or zigzag chains of alternate [Ni(L′)]2+ and [Fe(L)(CN)5]2− units, which are linked by two trans/cis cyanide ligands of [Fe(L)(CN)5]2−. Magnetic studies reveal that they exhibit intermetallic ferromagnetic coupling and long-range antiferromagnetic ordering. The strength of the Ni(II)–Fe(III) magnetic coupling has been analyzed by comparison with the related cyanide-bridged Ni(II)–Fe(III) complexes.
A family of enantiopure Fe(III)4 single molecule magnets: fine tuning of energy barrier by remote substituent.

Abstract:A new family of enantiopure star-shaped Fe-4(III) single-molecule magnets (SMMs) with the general formula [Fe-4(L-K)(6)] (H2L = (R or S)-2-((2-hydroxy-1-phenylethylimino methyl)phenol); K = H (1), Cl (2), Br (3), I (4), and t-Bu (5)), were structurally and magnetically characterized. Complex 1 was reported in our previous paper (Chem. Commun., 2011, 47, 8049-8051). Detailed magnetic measurements and a systematic magneto-structural correlation study revealed that the SMM properties of this series of compounds can be finely tuned by the remote substituent of the ligands. Although the change in the coordination environment of the central Fe3+ ions is very small, the properties of SMM behavior are changed considerably. All five complexes display frequency dependence of the ac susceptibility. However, the chi(ac)", peaks of complexes 2 and 5 cannot be observed down to 0.5 K. The fitted anisotropy energy barriers (U-eff) of complexes 1, 3, and 4 were 5.9, 7.1, and 11.0 K, respectively. Moreover, the hysteresis loops of these three complexes can be also observed around 0.5 K. Magneto-structural correlation analyses revealed that the coordination symmetry of the central Fe3+ ion and the intermolecular interaction are two key factors affecting the SMM properties. Deviation to a trigonal prism coordination environment and the existence of intermolecular interactions between neighboring clusters may both reduce the anisotropy energy barriers.

Abstract:Three new trinuclear complexes based on [Cu(L-n)](2+) (L-1 = 1,5,8,12-tetramethyl-1,3,6,8,10,13-hexaazacyclotetradecane, L-2 = 1,3-propanediamine (tn)) and [M(bpb)(CN)(2)](-) (bpb(2-) = 1,2-bis(pyridine-2-carboxamido)benzenate, M = Fe or Cr) have been synthesized and characterized structurally and magnetically. The Cu(II) ions adopt an axially-elongated octahedron with four N atoms from the L-n ligands occupying the equatorial plane and another two atoms (cyano nitrogen atoms or amide oxygen atoms) from two [M(bpb)(CN)(2)](-) moieties at the axial positions, resulting in a neutral linear trinuclear complex. Magnetic studies show that the CuFe2 compound bridged by the amido group exhibits ferromagnetic behaviour. The two cyano-bridged CuFe2 or CuCr2 compounds show unusual magnetic properties: weak antiferromagnetic Cu(II)-Fe(III) coupling and negligible Cu(II)-Cr(III) magnetic exchange, proved by the results of the field dependence of magnetization.

Cyano-Bridged (Fe2cu3ii)-Cu-Iii And (Fe4ni4ii)-Ni-Iii Complexes: Syntheses, Structures, And Magnetic Properties

Abstract:Two tricyanometallate precursors, (Bu4N)[(Tp(4Bo))Fe(CN)(3)]center dot H2O center dot 2MeCN (1) and (Bu4N)[(pzTp)Fe(CN)(3)] (2) [Bu4N+ = tetrabutylammonium cation; Tp(4Bo) = tris(indazolyl)hydroborate; pzTp = tetrakis(pyrazolyl)borate], with a low-spin Fe-III center have been synthesized and characterized. The reactions of 1 or 2 with [Cu(Me(3)tacn)(H2O)(2)](ClO4)(2) (Me(3)tacn = N,N',N' '-trimethyl-1,4,7-triazacyclononane) afford two pentanuclear cyano-bridged clusters, [(Tp(4Bo))(2)(Me(3)tacn)(3)Cu3Fe2(CN)(6)](ClO4)(4)center dot 5H(2)O (3) and [(pzTp)(2)(Me(3)tacn)(3)Cu3Fe2(CN)(6)](ClO4)(4)center dot 4H(2)O (4), respectively. Assembly reactions between 2 and [Ni(phen)(CH3OH)(4)](ClO4)(2) (phen = 1,10-phenanthroline) or Zn(OAc)(2)center dot 2H(2)O afford a molecular box [(pzTp)(4)(phen)(4)Ni4Fe4(CH3OH)(4)(CN)(12)](ClO4)(4)center dot 4H(2)O (5) and a rectangular cluster [(pzTp)(2)Zn2Fe2(OAc)(2)(H2O)(2)(CN)(6)] (6). Their molecular structures were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. In complexes 1 and 2, the central Fe-III ions are coordinated by three cyanide carbon atoms and three nitrogen atoms of Tp(4Bo-) or pzTp(-). Both complexes 3 and 4 show a trigonal-bipyramidal geometry, in which [(L)Fe(CN)(3)](-) units occupy the apical positions and are linked through cyanide to [Cu(Me(3)tacn)](2+) units situated in the equatorial plane. Complex 5 possesses a cubic arrangement of eight metal irons linked through edge-spanning cyanide bridges, while complex 6 shows Zn2Fe2(CN)(4) rectangular structure, in which Fe-III and Zn-II ions are alternately bridged by the cyanide groups. Intramolecular ferromagnetic couplings are observed for complexes 3-5, and they have S = (5)/(2), (5)/(2), and 6 ground states and appreciable magnetic anisotropies with negative D values equal to -0.49, -2.39, and -0.39 cm(-1), respectively.
Cyanide-Bridged Polynuclear and One-Dimensional FeIII-MnIII/II Bimetallic Complexes Based-on Pentacyanoferrite(III) Building Block: Synthesis, Crystal Structures, and Magnetic Properties

Abstract:In this contribution, based-on the structurally confirmed pentacyanometallate (PPh4)2[Fe(CN)5(imidazole)]·(imidazole)·H2O (1) and the manganese compounds [Mn(L)(H2O)2]ClO4 (L = N,N-ethylenebis(3-methoxysalicylideneiminate) or [Mn(MAC)(H2O)Cl]ClO4 (MAC = 2,13-dimethyl-3,6,9,12,18-pentaazabicyclo-[12.3.1]octadeca-1(18),2,12,14,16-pentaene), two new cyanide-bridged bimetallic FeIII-MnIII/II complexes [Mn(L)(H2O)]3[Fe(CN)5(imidazole)](ClO4) (2) and [Mn(MAC)][Fe(CN)5(imidazole)]·CH3OHn (3) were successfully synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, IR spectroscopy and X-ray structure determination. Single X-ray diffraction analysis reveals the cationic FeMn3 tetranuclear entity for complex 2, which can be further assembled into supramolecular 1D ladder-like double chain by the strong intermolecular hydrogen bond interactions. For complex 3, it can be structurally characterized as neutral one-dimensional linear single infinite chain. The magnetic investigations discover the ferromagnetic coupling between the FeIII-MnIII units in complex 2 and the antiferromagnetic coupling in complex 3 between the FeIII-MnII units through the bridging cyanide group, respectively.
