Abstract:Using the new Schiff base ligands condensed from 2-hydroxy-1-naphthalenecarboxaldehyde and (1 R ,2 R )/(1 S ,2 S )-2-aminocyclohexanol ( R -H 3 L/ S -H 3 L), a pair of homochiral Cu 6 Dy 3 heterometallic cluster complexes [Cu 6 Dy 3 ( R -L) 6 (OH) 6 (H 2 O) 6 ](ClO 4 )(NO 3 ) 2 ·4.75H 2 O·8.5MeOH ( R - 1 ) and [Cu 6 Dy 3 ( S -L) 6 (OH) 6 (H 2 O) 6 ](ClO 4 )(NO 3 ) 2 ·5.5H 2 O·8MeOH ( S - 1 ) were synthesized at room temperature, which exhibit an interesting topology of triangular corner-sharing cubanes. Magnetic measurements revealed that they are zero-field single-molecule magnets (SMMs), with different U eff /k values of 19.5(0.6) K for R - 1 and 21.4(0.4) K for S - 1 , owing to solvent magnetic effects. Meantime, the chiral enantiomers show proton conductivity caused by hydrogen bonding networks. Furthermore, the circular dichroism (CD) spectra of R - 1 and S - 1 confirmed their enantiomeric nature, and the magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) study revealed that both R - 1 and S - 1 have strong magneto-optical Faraday effects at room temperature, with a large │ g max (MCD)│ value of 0.58 T −1 .

Three New MnII-[MoIII(CN)7]4- Molecular Magnets Constructed from Chiral Bidentate Chelating Ligands

Abstract:Three new cyanide-bridged compounds {[Mn((S,S)-Dpen)]3[Mn((S,S)-Dpen)(H2O)][Mo(CN)7]2·4H2O·4C2H3N}n (1-SS), {[Mn((R,R)-Dpen)]3[Mn((R,R)-Dpen)(H2O)][Mo(CN)7]2·4.5H2O·4C2H3N}n (1-RR), and {[Mn(Chxn)][Mn(Chxn)(H2O)0.8][Mo(CN)7]·H2O·4C2H3N}n (2) (SS/RR-Dpen = (S,S)/(R,R)-1,2-diphenylethylenediamine and Chxn = 1,2-cyclohexanediamine) have been successfully synthesized from the self-assembly reaction of the [MoIII(CN)7]4- unit, the MnII ions, and two chiral bidentate chelating ligands. Single-crystal structure determinations show that compounds 1-SS and 1-RR containing ligands SS/RR-Dpen are enantiomers and crystallize in the chiral space group P21. On the other hand, compound 2 crystallizes in the achiral centrosymmetric space group P1̄ due to the racemization of the SS/RR-Chxn ligands during the growth of the crystals. Despite their different space groups and ligands, all three compounds exhibit similar framework structures consisting of cyano-bridged MnII-MoIII two-dimensional layers separated by the bidentate ligands. The circular dichroism (CD) spectra have further demonstrated the enantiopure character of compounds 1-SS and 1-RR. Magnetic measurements revealed that all three compounds display ferrimagnetic ordering with similar critical temperatures of about 40 K. The chiral enantiomers 1-SS and 1-RR exhibit the magnetic hysteresis loop with a coercive field of about 8000 Oe at 2 K, which is by far the highest for all known MnII-[MoIII(CN)7]4- magnets. Analyses of their structures and magnetic properties indicated that their magnetic properties depend on the anisotropic magnetic interactions between the MnII and MoIII centers, which are closely related to the C-N-M bond angles.

Abstract:A pair of enantiomerically homochiral {Co(II)6Co(III)4} clusters featuring a butterfly-like structure, [Co(II)6Co(III)4(μ3-OH)(μ3-X)(S-pa)4(pdm)6(pdmH)2](ClO4)4·3.5H2O (S-1) and [Co(II)6Co(III)4(μ3-OH)(μ3-X)(R-pa)4(pdm)6(pdmH)2](ClO4)4·3.5H2O (R-1) (X = OH or OMe, S- or R-paH = S- or R-phenylalaninol and pdmH2 = pyridine-2,6-diyldimethanol), have been synthesized and structurally characterized. They are the second largest homochiral Co clusters constructed by chiral ligands. They are also the first example of high-nuclearity homochiral Co clusters having both slow magnetic relaxation behaviour and ferroelectric property.

Abstract:A pair of enantiopure cubane-type (Cu4O4)-O-II clusters was constructed from simple chiral ligands (R or S)-2-[(2-hydroxy-1-phenylethylimino) methyl] phenol (H2LR or S). Single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies demonstrated that complexes 1R and 1S are enantiomers. They consist of a (Cu4O4)-O-II cubane core in which the four Cu-II centres are linked by a mu(3)-oxo bridge. The four Cu-II ions in one cluster are all in a distorted square-pyramidal geometry. Circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy also confirmed that complexes 1R and 1S are enantiomers and that the chirality was successfully transferred and amplified from the ligand to the coordination environment of the Cu-II ions. Magnetic susceptibility measurements show an overall antiferromagnetic interaction which could be fitted by using MAGPACK with a two parameter model (J(1) = -5.58 cm(-1), J(2) = 3.80 cm(-1)).
Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer Observations of the Seyfert 1.5 Galaxy NGC 5548 in a Low State

Abstract:We present far-ultraviolet spectra of the Seyfert 1.5 galaxy NGC 5548 obtained in 2000 June with the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE). Our data span the observed wavelength range 915--1185 Angstroms at a resolution of 20 km/s. The spectrum shows a weak continuum and emission from O VI, C III, and He II. The FUSE data were obtained when the AGN was in a low state, which has revealed strong, narrow O VI emission lines. We also resolve intrinsic, associated absorption lines of O VI and the Lyman series. Several distinct kinematic components are present, spanning a velocity range of 0 to -1300 km/s relative to systemic, with kinematic structure similar to that seen in previous observations of longer wavelength ultraviolet (UV) lines. We explore the relationship between the far-UV absorbers and those seen previously in the UV and X-rays. We find that the high-velocity UV absorption component is consistent with being low-ionization, contrary to some previous claims, and is consistent with its non-detection in high-resolution X-ray spectra. The intermediate velocity absorbers, at -300 to -400 km/s, show H I and O VI column densities consistent with having contributions from both a high-ionization X-ray absorber and a low-ionization UV absorber. No single far-UV absorbing component can be solely identified with the X-ray absorber.

Abstract:The isostructural, chiral molecular magnetic materials with the formula [MxM'(2-x)(ca)2(1,4-dimb)]n [H2ca = D-(+)-camphoric acid, 1,4-dimb = 1,4-di-(1-imidazolyl-methyl)-benzene, M = Ni(II), M' = CoII, 0 < or = x < or = 2] consist of ca-bridged (4,4) layers with [M2(O2CR)4] as secondary building units that are pillared by the 1,4-dimb ligands into a unique 3D framework. The high-spin octahedral symmetry and the proportions of the mixed-metal ions were characterized by UV-vis spectroscopy. The compounds exhibit the onset of antiferromagnetic ordering at 7.5 approximately 23 K, as well as weak ferromagnetism, spin-flop, and glassy behavior that result from the randomness of the mixed-metal pairs, magnetic anisotropy of the metallic cations, and antisymmetric exchange. The composites should be regarded as molecular alloys of the pure Ni(II) and Co(II) compounds. The magnetic behavior of the solid solutions shows unambiguously that the organic bridges, bond angles, and bond distances greatly influence the effective interactions and bring about cooperative magnetic behavior in the chiral 3D frameworks.

Abstract:Two couples of enantiomerically pure chiral cyano-bridged heterobimetallic one-dimensional (1D) chain complexes: [Mn((R,R)-Salphen)Fe(Tp)(CN)3] n (1) and [Mn((S,S)-Salphen)Te(Tp)(CN)3] n (2) (Salphen = N,N’-1,2-diphenylethylenebis (salicylideneiminato) dianion, Tp = tris(pyrazolyl) hydroborate), [Mn((R,R)-Salphen)Fe(Tp*)(CN)3·2H2O] n (3) and [Mn((S,S)-Salphen)Fe(Tp*)(CN)3·2H2O] n (4) (Tp* = hydridotris (3,5-dimethylpyrazol-1-yl) borate), have been successfully synthesized by the reactions of MnIII schiff-base complexes with the tricyanometalate building block, [(LTp)Fe(CN)3]− (LTp = Tp or Tp*). All complexes are made up of neutral cyano-bridged zigzag double chains with (-Fe-C≡N-Mn-N≡C-) n as the repeating unit. Circular dichroism (CD) spectra confirm the enantiomeric nature of the optically active complexes. Magnetic studies demonstrate that ferromagnetic interactions are operative in these complexes. The ferromagnetic couplings become weak in the chains with the bending of the Mn-N≡C angles.

Abstract:Two enantiopure one-dimensional complexes with helical structures, [Mn(3)((R,R)-Salcy)(3)(H2O)(2)Fe(CN)(6).2H2O]n (1) and [Mn(3)((S,S)-Salcy)(3)(H2O)(2)Fe(CN)(6).2H2O]n (2) [Salcy = N,N'-(1,2-cyclohexanediylethylene)bis(salicylideneiminato) dianion], have been synthesized and characterized. Magnetic studies show that both complexes are ferrimagnets with the magnetic transition temperature at 3 K.

Abstract:A new family of enantiopure star-shaped Fe-4(III) single-molecule magnets (SMMs) with the general formula [Fe-4(L-K)(6)] (H2L = (R or S)-2-((2-hydroxy-1-phenylethylimino methyl)phenol); K = H (1), Cl (2), Br (3), I (4), and t-Bu (5)), were structurally and magnetically characterized. Complex 1 was reported in our previous paper (Chem. Commun., 2011, 47, 8049-8051). Detailed magnetic measurements and a systematic magneto-structural correlation study revealed that the SMM properties of this series of compounds can be finely tuned by the remote substituent of the ligands. Although the change in the coordination environment of the central Fe3+ ions is very small, the properties of SMM behavior are changed considerably. All five complexes display frequency dependence of the ac susceptibility. However, the chi(ac)", peaks of complexes 2 and 5 cannot be observed down to 0.5 K. The fitted anisotropy energy barriers (U-eff) of complexes 1, 3, and 4 were 5.9, 7.1, and 11.0 K, respectively. Moreover, the hysteresis loops of these three complexes can be also observed around 0.5 K. Magneto-structural correlation analyses revealed that the coordination symmetry of the central Fe3+ ion and the intermolecular interaction are two key factors affecting the SMM properties. Deviation to a trigonal prism coordination environment and the existence of intermolecular interactions between neighboring clusters may both reduce the anisotropy energy barriers.

Abstract:Two enantiomeric pairs of new 3d–4f heterometallic clusters have been synthesized from two enantiomer Schiff base derivatives: (R/S)-2-[(2-hydroxy-1-phenylethylimino)methyl] phenol (R-/S-H2L). The formulae of the series clusters are Co3Ln(R-L)6 (Ln = Dy (1R), Gd (2R)), Co3Ln (S-L)6 (Ln = Dy (1S), Gd (2S)), whose crystal structures and magnetic properties have been characterized. Structural analysis indicated that the above clusters crystallize in the chiral P213 group space. The central lanthanide ion has a coordination geometry of D3 surrounded by three [CoIII(L)2]– anions using six aliphatic oxygen atoms of L2− featuring a star-shaped [CoIII3LnIII] configuration. Magnetic measurements showed the presence of slow magnetic relaxation with an effective energy barrier of 22.33 K in the DyIII derivatives under a zero-dc field. Furthermore, the circular dichroism (CD) spectra of 1R and 1S confirmed their enantiomeric nature.

Abstract:Multifunctional materials with a coexistence of proton conduction properties, single–molecule magnet (SMM) behaviors and magneto–optical Faraday effects have rarely been reported. Herein, a new pair of Cu(II)–Dy(III) enantiomers, [DyCu2(RR/SS–H2L)2(H2O)4(NO3)2]·(NO3)·(H2O) (R–1 and S–1) (H4L = [RR/SS] –N,N′–bis [3–hydroxysalicylidene] –1,2–cyclohexanediamine), has been designed and prepared using homochiral Schiff–base ligands. R–1 and S–1 contain linear Cu(II)–Dy(III)–Cu(II) trinuclear units and possess 1D stacking channels within their supramolecular networks. R–1 and S–1 display chiral optical activity and strong magneto–optical Faraday effects. Moreover, R–1 shows a zero–field SMM behavior. In addition, R–1 demonstrates humidity– and temperature–dependent proton conductivity with optimal values of 1.34 × 10−4 S·cm−1 under 50 °C and 98% relative humidity (RH), which is related to a 1D extended H–bonded chain constructed by water molecules, nitrate and phenol groups of the RR–H2L ligand.

Abstract:One-dimensional chiral copper(II) and manganese(II) coordination polymers with single asymmetric end-to-end (EE) azide bridges, [Cu(R-L)2(N3)]n(ClO4)n (1), [Cu(S-L)2 (N3)]n(ClO4)n (2), [Mn(R-L)2(N3)]n(ClO4)n (3), and [Mn(S-L)2(N3)]n(ClO4)n (4) (R-L or S-L = R- or S-pyridine-2-carbaldehyde-imine), have been synthesized, using azide ions as bridging groups and chiral Schiff bases as auxiliary ligands, and characterized. The crystal structure determination of complexes 1 and 2 reveals the formation of one-dimensional chiral chains, in which the central Cu(II) ion is six-coordinate in the form of an elongated octahedron. Complex 3 consists of chiral helical polymeric chains, in which the central Mn(II) has a slightly distorted octahedral geometry. They all crystallize in the chiral space group P2(1). Complexes 1 and 2 are rare examples that exhibit ferromagnetic interaction between copper(II) ions through the single end-to-end azido bridge. Fitting the susceptibility data for 1 using a 1D uniform chain model led to the parameters J = 0.70(3) cm(-1), g = 2.06(2), and zj' = 0.07(2) cm(-1). The magnetic studies on 3 and 4 show that there is weak antiferromagnetic coupling between the manganese(II) ions.
Single-Molecule Magnets: Preparation and Properties of Mixed-Carboxylate Complexes [Mn12O12(O2CR)8(O2CR')8(H2O)4]

Abstract:Methods are reported for the preparation of mixed-carboxylate versions of the [Mn12O12(O2CR)16(H2O)4] family of single-molecule magnets (SMMs). [Mn12O12(O2CCHCl2)8(O2CCH2But)8(H2O)3] (5) and [Mn12O12(O2CHCl2)8(O2CEt)8(H2O)3] (6) have been obtained from the 1:1 reaction of the corresponding homocarboxylate species. Complexes 5 and 6 both contain a [Mn12O12] core with the CHCl2CO2- ligands ordered in the axial positions and the RCO2- ligands (R = CH2But (5) or Et (6)) in equatorial positions. There is, thus, a preference for the CHCl2CO2- to occupy the sites lying on the MnIII Jahn-Teller axes, and this is rationalized on the basis of the relative basicities of the carboxylate groups. Direct current magnetic susceptibility studies in a 10.0 kG field in the 2.00-300 K range indicate a large ground-state spin, and fitting of magnetization data collected in the 10.0-70.0 kG field and 1.80-4.00 K temperature range gave S = 10, g = 1.89, and D = -0.65 K for 5, and S = 10, g = 1.83, and D = -0.60 K for 6. These values are typical of [Mn12O12(O2CR)16(H2O)4] complexes. Alternating current susceptibility studies show the out-of-phase susceptibility (chi'') signals characteristic of the slow relaxation in the millisecond time scale of single-molecule magnets. Arrhenius plots obtained from chi'' versus T data gave effective barriers to relaxation (Ueff) of 71 and 72 K for 5 and 6, respectively. 1H NMR spectra in CD2Cl2 show that 5 and 6 are the main species present on dissolution, but there is evidence for some ligand distribution between axial and equatorial sites, by intra- and/or intermolecular exchange processes.

Abstract:Multifunctionalsingle-molecule magnets (SMMs) have sparked greatinterest, but chiral SMMs obtained via spontaneous resolution arerarely reported. We synthesized a series of chiral trinuclear hepta-coordinatelanthanide complexes [Zn-II (3)Ln(III) (3)] (1 for Dy, 2 for Tb, 3 for Gd, and 4 for Dy0.07Y0.93) using the achiral flexible ligand H2L (2,2 & PRIME;-[1,2-ethanediylbis[(ethylimino)methylene]]bis[3,5-dimethylphenol]).The complexes crystallize in the chiral P6(3) group space, and two enantiomers of different chirality are spontaneouslyresolved. Three [Zn(L)Cl](-) anions utilize the twophenoxy oxygen atoms of each L2- to coordinate withthree lanthanide ions, respectively, and the three hepta-coordinate D (5h) lanthanide ions are arranged in a triangle.The chirality comes from the propeller arrangement of the peripheralthree bidentate chelate L2- ligands like octahedral[M(AA)(3)]( n+/-) (M = transitionmetal ions; AA = bidentate chelate ligands, e.g., 2,2 & PRIME;-bipyridine,1,10-phenathroline, ethylenediamine, acac(-) or oxalate).Complex 1 exhibits an AC susceptibility signal and isfrequency-dependent, which is typical of SMMs. Complex 4, doped with a large amount of diamagnetic Y(III) in Dy(III), exhibits U (eff) = 48.3 K and & tau;(0) = 4.4 x10(-8) s in experiments. Complex 2 showscircularly polarized luminescence and apparent photoluminescence,typical of the f-f transitions of Tb(III). Spontaneous resolution of novel chiralZn(3)Ln(3) complexes of an achiral flexible ligandis realized. The & mu;(3)-OH--bridged lanthanide ionsare seven-coordinate with D (5h) symmetry.They all have apparent mirror-related circular dichroism signals,and the fluorescent Tb enantiomers show circularly polarized luminescenceproperties. The magnetically diluted Dy0.03Y0.97 species shows field-induced single-molecule magnetic behavior withan energy barrier of 48.3 K under 2000 Oe.

Abstract:This paper reports two metal phosphonate clusters containing Mn-III-Schiff base units, namely, [Mn-2(5-Brsalen)(2)(C10H7PO3H)(2)]2CH3OH (1) and [Mn-6(5-Brsalen)(6)(C10H7PO3)(2)(H2O)(2)](ClO4)(2)7.6H(2)O (2) [5-Brsalen = N,N-ethylenebis(5-bromosalicylideneiminate) dianion]. Compound 1 shows a discrete dinuclear structure in which dimers of Mn-2(5-Brsalen)(2) are terminated by the naphthylphosphonate ligand. In 2, each naphthylphosphonate ligand connects three Mn atoms, forming triangular units of {Mn3PO3}, which are further cross-linked through phenoxide oxygen atoms into a hexanuclear cluster. Magnetic studies reveal that the exchange couplings mediated through the phenoxide bridges within the dimer are ferromagnetic in compounds 1 and 2. Further, slow magnetization relaxation, characteristic of single-molecule magnets (SMMs), is observed in both 1 and 2, in contrast to the non-SMM behavior in the precursor of [Mn(5-Brsalen)(H2O)](2)(ClO4)(2).

Abstract:Using the tetracyanometalate precursor [Fe(4,4'-dmbipy)(CN)(4)](-) (4,4'-dmbipy = 4,4'-dimethyl-2,2'-bipyridine) as the building block, two new cyano-bridged one-dimensional heterobimetallic coordination polymers, [M(CH3OH)(2)Fe-2(4,4'-dmbipy)(2)(CN)(8)](n) (M = Cu, 1; Mn, 2), have been synthesized and structurally characterized. X-ray crystallography reveals that complexes 1 and 2 consist of heterobimetallic chains of squares, and the central M-II ion is six-coordinated as an elongated distorted octahedral geometry. Magnetic studies show ferromagnetic coupling between Fe-III and Cu-II ions in complex 1. Complex 2 exhibits ferrimagnetic behavior caused by the noncompensation of the local interacting spins (S-Mn = 5/2 and S-Fe = 1/2), which interact antiferromagnetically through bridging cyanide groups. Abstract:Two homochiral trinuclear clusters, {(MeTP)(2)Fe-2(CN)(6)Ni[(1R,2R)-chxn](2)} (1) and {(MeTp)(2)Fe-2(CN)(6)Ni[(1,3,2S)-chxn](2)} (2) [chxn = 1,2-diaminocyclohexane; MeTp = methyltris(pyrazolyl)borate), have been synthesized and structurally characterized. Ferroelectric and magnetic measurements reveal that they are rare examples of metal-organic compounds bearing ferroelectricity and intramolecular ferromagnetic interactions.

Abstract:Design and synthesis of high-spin Mn(II)-based single-molecule magnets (SMMs) have not been well developed to a great extent, as compared with a large number of SMMs based on the other first row transition metal complexes. In light of our success in designing Fe(II), Co(II) and Fe(III)-based SMMs with high coordination number of 8, it is of great interest to design Mn(II) analogues with such a strategy. In this contribution, four Mn(II) compounds, [MnII(Ln)2](ClO4)2 (1-4) were obtained from reactions of neutral tetradentate ligands, L1-L4, with hydrated MnII(ClO4)2 (L1 = 2,9-bis(carbomethoxy)-1,10-phenanthroline, L2 = 2,9-bis(carbomethoxy)-2,2'-dipyridine, L3 = N2,N9-dibutyl-1,10-phenanthroline-2,9-dicarboxamide, L4 = 6,6'-bis(2-(tert-butyl)-2H-tetrazol-5-yl)-2,2'-bipyridine). Their crystal structures have been determined by X-ray crystallography and it clearly shows that the Mn(II) centers in these compounds have an oversaturated coordination number of 8. Their magnetic properties have been investigated in detail; to our surprise, all of these Mn(II) compounds show interesting slow magnetic relaxation behaviors under an applied direct current field, although they have very small negative D values.
