Abstract:By the reaction of chiral Mn(III) Schiff-base complexes with the dicyanoruthenate building block, [Ru(salen)(CN)2](-) (salen(2-) = N,N'-ethylenebis(salicylideneimine) dianion), two couples of enantiomerically pure chiral cyano-bridged heterobimetallic one-dimensional (1D) chain complexes, [Mn((R,R)-salcy)Ru(salen)(CN)2]n (1-(RR)) and [Mn((S,S)-salcy)Ru(salen)(CN)2]n (1-(SS)) (Salcy = N,N'-(1,2-cyclohexanediylethylene)bis(salicylideneiminato) dianion), [Mn((R,R)-salphen)Ru(salen)(CN)2]n (2-(RR)) and [Mn((S,S)-salphen)Ru(salen)(CN)2]n (2-(SS)) (salphen = N,N'-(1,2-diphenylethylene)bis(salicylideneiminato) dianion), were synthesized and structurally characterized. Circular dichroism (CD) and vibrational circular dichroism (VCD) spectra confirm the enantiomeric nature of the optically active complexes. Structural analyses reveal the formation of neutral cyano-bridged zigzag single chains in 1-(RR) and 1-(SS), and double chains in 2-(RR) and 2-(SS). Magnetic studies show that antiferromagnetic coupling is operative between Ru(III) and Mn(III) centers bridged by cyanide. Compounds 1-(RR) and 1-(SS) show metamagnetic behavior with a critical field of about 7.2 kOe at 1.9 K resulting from the intermolecular π∙∙∙π interactions. Additionally, magnetostructural correlation for some typical cyano-bridged heterobimetallic Ru(III)-Mn(III) compounds is discussed.

Abstract:A pair of enantiopure cubane-type (Cu4O4)-O-II clusters was constructed from simple chiral ligands (R or S)-2-[(2-hydroxy-1-phenylethylimino) methyl] phenol (H2LR or S). Single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies demonstrated that complexes 1R and 1S are enantiomers. They consist of a (Cu4O4)-O-II cubane core in which the four Cu-II centres are linked by a mu(3)-oxo bridge. The four Cu-II ions in one cluster are all in a distorted square-pyramidal geometry. Circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy also confirmed that complexes 1R and 1S are enantiomers and that the chirality was successfully transferred and amplified from the ligand to the coordination environment of the Cu-II ions. Magnetic susceptibility measurements show an overall antiferromagnetic interaction which could be fitted by using MAGPACK with a two parameter model (J(1) = -5.58 cm(-1), J(2) = 3.80 cm(-1)).

Abstract:Two couples of enantiomerically pure chiral cyano-bridged heterobimetallic one-dimensional (1D) chain complexes: [Mn((R,R)-Salphen)Fe(Tp)(CN)3] n (1) and [Mn((S,S)-Salphen)Te(Tp)(CN)3] n (2) (Salphen = N,N’-1,2-diphenylethylenebis (salicylideneiminato) dianion, Tp = tris(pyrazolyl) hydroborate), [Mn((R,R)-Salphen)Fe(Tp*)(CN)3·2H2O] n (3) and [Mn((S,S)-Salphen)Fe(Tp*)(CN)3·2H2O] n (4) (Tp* = hydridotris (3,5-dimethylpyrazol-1-yl) borate), have been successfully synthesized by the reactions of MnIII schiff-base complexes with the tricyanometalate building block, [(LTp)Fe(CN)3]− (LTp = Tp or Tp*). All complexes are made up of neutral cyano-bridged zigzag double chains with (-Fe-C≡N-Mn-N≡C-) n as the repeating unit. Circular dichroism (CD) spectra confirm the enantiomeric nature of the optically active complexes. Magnetic studies demonstrate that ferromagnetic interactions are operative in these complexes. The ferromagnetic couplings become weak in the chains with the bending of the Mn-N≡C angles.

Abstract:Using tricyanometalate [(Tp)Fe(CN)(3)](-) (Tp(-) = hydrotris(pyrazolyl)borate) as building block, the 1-D chain polymer containing paramagnetic Ru-2(II,III) dinuclear complex, [Ru-2(O(2)CtBu)(4)][(Tp)Fe(CN)(3)] (1), was synthesized and its structure was determined. Abstract:Two enantiomeric pairs of new 3d–4f heterometallic clusters have been synthesized from two enantiomer Schiff base derivatives: (R/S)-2-[(2-hydroxy-1-phenylethylimino)methyl] phenol (R-/S-H2L). The formulae of the series clusters are Co3Ln(R-L)6 (Ln = Dy (1R), Gd (2R)), Co3Ln (S-L)6 (Ln = Dy (1S), Gd (2S)), whose crystal structures and magnetic properties have been characterized. Structural analysis indicated that the above clusters crystallize in the chiral P213 group space. The central lanthanide ion has a coordination geometry of D3 surrounded by three [CoIII(L)2]– anions using six aliphatic oxygen atoms of L2− featuring a star-shaped [CoIII3LnIII] configuration. Magnetic measurements showed the presence of slow magnetic relaxation with an effective energy barrier of 22.33 K in the DyIII derivatives under a zero-dc field. Furthermore, the circular dichroism (CD) spectra of 1R and 1S confirmed their enantiomeric nature.

Abstract:A new type of chiral lead‐free metal halide (R/S‐MBA)3Ru2Br9 (MBA = methylbenzylammonium) is reportede, and the chirality of chiral cations is successfully transferred to the inorganic skeleton. These ruthenium‐based chiral perovskites exhibit strong antiferromagnetic property, which is mainly due to the strong antiferromagnetic coupling between the adjacent Ru atom in the [Ru2Br9]3− dimer. Chiral hybrid organic–inorganic metal halides have attracted wide attention owing to their superior chiroptoelectronic and chirospintronic properties. Here, a new class of chiral lead‐free metal halides, (R/S‐MBA)3Ru2Br9 (MBA = methylbenzylammonium), with unique magnetic properties is reported. (R/S‐MBA)3Ru2Br9 is composed of a surface‐shared octahedron dimer separated by chiral cations and crystallizes into the Sohncke space group of P212121. The crystal structures, chiroptical, magnetic properties, and magnetic circular dichroism of (R/S‐MBA)3Ru2Br9 are systematically investigated. Owing to the strong antiferromagnetic coupling between the Ru atom through bromine bridge in the [Ru2Br9]3− dimer and the weak ferromagnetic coupling between the neighboring [Ru2Br9]3− dimer, (R/S‐MBA)3Ru2Br9 exhibits antiferromagnetic property with Néel temperature at 7 K. Considering the unique magnetic property of ruthenium, together with the rapid progress of antiferromagnetic spintronics and optospintronics recently, this work provides a novel multifunctional lead‐free chiral magnetic candidate toward chiral optoelectronics and antiferromagnetic spintronics.

Abstract:A series of enantiopure magnetic heterometallic coordination cubic cages [(M8Cu6L24)-Cu-II-L-II (MeCN)(12)]-(ClO4)(28) (1:M = Ni, 2:M = Co, L = chiral ditopic ligand) have been synthesized. These cages have cubic structures enclosing a 2250 angstrom(3) interior cavity with controllable chirality. Both the vertexes and the faces of the cubic cages are in chiral arrangements, which are dictated by the chiral amines used in forming the ligands. R-1-Phenylethylamine leads to 8 Lambda-6P configuration, while S-1-phenylethylamine results in 8 Delta-6M ones. The magnetic behaviors of the cages are varied by the metals. They all show weak antiferromagnetic interaction. These cages represent the first series of enantiopure magnetic cubic cages, which offer a platform for the study of host-guest chemistry of potential chiral magnetic guests.

Abstract:A new pair of multifunctional Zn(II)-Dy(III) enantiomers based on the chiral Schiff-base ligands [R,R-ZnLDy (H2O)(NO3)(3)] (1R2R-ZnDy) and [S,S-ZnLDy(H2O)(NO3)(3)] (1S2S-ZnDy) (H2L = phenol, 2,2'-[[(1R,2R/1S,2S)-1,2-diphenyl-1,2-ethanediyl]bis[(E)-nitrilomethylidyne]]bis[6-methoxy]) was synthesized and characterized. Magnetic studies indicate that 1R2R-ZnDy behaves as a single-molecule magnet. Enantiomers 1R2R-ZnDy and 1S2S-ZnDy show chiroptical activity and circularly polarized luminescence in the N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) solution. The chiral Zn(II)-Dy(III) complexes display magnetic circular dichroism signals at room temperature. Accordingly, these complexes will inspire intriguing research on singlemolecule magnets with circular polarization of luminescence activity and magneto-optic effects, which will give new clues to design multifunctional molecular magnetic materials.

Abstract:Crystallization of two enantiomers Delta-1 and Lambda-1 was achieved by using an achiral flexible ligand H4L (2,2'-[1,2-ethanediylbis[(hydroxyethylimino)methylene]]bis[6-methoxy-4-methyl-phenol]). The absolute configurations of the enantiomers in P3(1)21 (Delta-1) and P3(2)21 (Lambda-1) are confirmed by the X-ray single crystal diffraction. Solid-state circular dichroism spectra show that two enantiomers have absorption peaks of mirror symmetry. The experimental energy barrier of 88.9 K derived from the alternating-current magnetic measurements is consistent with the energy gap (89.9 K) between two lowest Kramers doublets calculated by ab initio method.

Abstract:Using the new Schiff base ligands condensed from 2-hydroxy-1-naphthalenecarboxaldehyde and (1 R ,2 R )/(1 S ,2 S )-2-aminocyclohexanol ( R -H 3 L/ S -H 3 L), a pair of homochiral Cu 6 Dy 3 heterometallic cluster complexes [Cu 6 Dy 3 ( R -L) 6 (OH) 6 (H 2 O) 6 ](ClO 4 )(NO 3 ) 2 ·4.75H 2 O·8.5MeOH ( R - 1 ) and [Cu 6 Dy 3 ( S -L) 6 (OH) 6 (H 2 O) 6 ](ClO 4 )(NO 3 ) 2 ·5.5H 2 O·8MeOH ( S - 1 ) were synthesized at room temperature, which exhibit an interesting topology of triangular corner-sharing cubanes. Magnetic measurements revealed that they are zero-field single-molecule magnets (SMMs), with different U eff /k values of 19.5(0.6) K for R - 1 and 21.4(0.4) K for S - 1 , owing to solvent magnetic effects. Meantime, the chiral enantiomers show proton conductivity caused by hydrogen bonding networks. Furthermore, the circular dichroism (CD) spectra of R - 1 and S - 1 confirmed their enantiomeric nature, and the magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) study revealed that both R - 1 and S - 1 have strong magneto-optical Faraday effects at room temperature, with a large │ g max (MCD)│ value of 0.58 T −1 .

Abstract:The isostructural, chiral molecular magnetic materials with the formula [MxM'(2-x)(ca)2(1,4-dimb)]n [H2ca = D-(+)-camphoric acid, 1,4-dimb = 1,4-di-(1-imidazolyl-methyl)-benzene, M = Ni(II), M' = CoII, 0 < or = x < or = 2] consist of ca-bridged (4,4) layers with [M2(O2CR)4] as secondary building units that are pillared by the 1,4-dimb ligands into a unique 3D framework. The high-spin octahedral symmetry and the proportions of the mixed-metal ions were characterized by UV-vis spectroscopy. The compounds exhibit the onset of antiferromagnetic ordering at 7.5 approximately 23 K, as well as weak ferromagnetism, spin-flop, and glassy behavior that result from the randomness of the mixed-metal pairs, magnetic anisotropy of the metallic cations, and antisymmetric exchange. The composites should be regarded as molecular alloys of the pure Ni(II) and Co(II) compounds. The magnetic behavior of the solid solutions shows unambiguously that the organic bridges, bond angles, and bond distances greatly influence the effective interactions and bring about cooperative magnetic behavior in the chiral 3D frameworks.

Abstract:A series of enantiopure ruthenium(II) polypyridyl complexes are reported that feature pendant pyridyl groups suitable for building larger self-assembled structures. The complexes are characterized in detail in solution using NMR spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry, and photophysical methods and in the solid state using single-crystal X-ray crystallography. The complexes are luminescent, displaying long excited-state lifetimes that are quenched when the pendant pyridyl groups are protonated. Reaction with cadmium(II) ions results in the formation of a mixed-metal one-dimensional coordination polymer, which was characterized by single-crystal X-ray crystallography.
Three New MnII-[MoIII(CN)7]4- Molecular Magnets Constructed from Chiral Bidentate Chelating Ligands

Abstract:Three new cyanide-bridged compounds {[Mn((S,S)-Dpen)]3[Mn((S,S)-Dpen)(H2O)][Mo(CN)7]2·4H2O·4C2H3N}n (1-SS), {[Mn((R,R)-Dpen)]3[Mn((R,R)-Dpen)(H2O)][Mo(CN)7]2·4.5H2O·4C2H3N}n (1-RR), and {[Mn(Chxn)][Mn(Chxn)(H2O)0.8][Mo(CN)7]·H2O·4C2H3N}n (2) (SS/RR-Dpen = (S,S)/(R,R)-1,2-diphenylethylenediamine and Chxn = 1,2-cyclohexanediamine) have been successfully synthesized from the self-assembly reaction of the [MoIII(CN)7]4- unit, the MnII ions, and two chiral bidentate chelating ligands. Single-crystal structure determinations show that compounds 1-SS and 1-RR containing ligands SS/RR-Dpen are enantiomers and crystallize in the chiral space group P21. On the other hand, compound 2 crystallizes in the achiral centrosymmetric space group P1̄ due to the racemization of the SS/RR-Chxn ligands during the growth of the crystals. Despite their different space groups and ligands, all three compounds exhibit similar framework structures consisting of cyano-bridged MnII-MoIII two-dimensional layers separated by the bidentate ligands. The circular dichroism (CD) spectra have further demonstrated the enantiopure character of compounds 1-SS and 1-RR. Magnetic measurements revealed that all three compounds display ferrimagnetic ordering with similar critical temperatures of about 40 K. The chiral enantiomers 1-SS and 1-RR exhibit the magnetic hysteresis loop with a coercive field of about 8000 Oe at 2 K, which is by far the highest for all known MnII-[MoIII(CN)7]4- magnets. Analyses of their structures and magnetic properties indicated that their magnetic properties depend on the anisotropic magnetic interactions between the MnII and MoIII centers, which are closely related to the C-N-M bond angles.

Chiral Cyanide-Bridged Cr-Iii-Mn-Iii Heterobimetallic Chains Based on [(Tp)cr(cn)(3)](-): Synthesis, Structures, and Magnetic Properties

Abstract:By the reactions of Mn-III Schiff-base complexes with the tricyanometalate building block, [(Tp)Cr(CN)(3)](-) (Tp = Tris(pyrazolyl) hydroborate), two couples of enantiomerically pure chiral cyano-bridged heterobimetallic one-dimensional (1D) chain complexes, [Mn((R,R)-Salcy)Cr(Tp)(CN)(3)center dot 1/4H(2)O center dot 1/2CH(2)Cl(2)](n) (1) and [Mn((S,S)-Salcy)Cr(Tp)(CN)(3)center dot 1/4H(2)O center dot 1/2CH(2)Cl(2)](n) (2) (Salcy = N,N'-(1,2-cyclohexanediylethylene)bis(salicylideneiminato) dianion), [Mn((R,R)-Salphen)Cr(Tp)(CN)(3)](n) (3) and [Mn((S,S)-Salphen)Cr(Tp)(CN)(3)](n) (4) (Salphen = N,N'-1,2-diphenylethylene-bis(salicylideneiminato) dianion), have been successfully synthesized. Circular dichroism (CD) spectra confirm the enantiomeric nature of the optically active complexes. Structural analyses reveal the formation of neutral cyano-bridged zigzag single chains in 1 and 2, and neutral cyano-bridged zigzag double chains in 3 and 4. Magnetic studies show that antiferromagnetic couplings are operative between C-III and Mn-III centers bridged by cyanide. Complexes 1 and 2 are the rare examples of chiral ferrimagnets; while complexes 3 and 4 exhibit a coexistence of chirality and spin-glass behavior in a 1D chain.
