Abstract:The debate on the "concept of drama" in the New Period was carried out in the context of dramatic crisis.In the debate,the direction of the development of Chinese spoken drama was discussed,which helped widen the realism in the New Period,the trial of experimental drama and the emergence of a new dramatic performing system.On the other hand,the debate concluded that virtuality is the nature of drama,which deviates from the human nature of drama,resulted in the over-reforming of dramatic form,and inevitably left serious problems for the future development of drama.

Abstract:The scenery is one of the shaping factors on the stage and it is an important part of the drama stage art. It is close to drama, and will not only help the embodiment of the plot, more have great influence to the audience appreciation and performers.Critics of the late Qing and early republic keep the application of old and new drama scenery separate, generally oppose the old drama scenes, and fully affirm its role in the new drama performances, and make positive suggestions for its improper use.They also provide the reference theoretical knowledge and practical cases for the development of Chinese drama stage scenes through the translation of western works or the investigation on western theatres.

Abstract:In the development of traditional Chinese drama, the word “drama' has its original meaning and its semantic changes. Because the relevant researchers in the 20th century ignored this fact, their textual researches about the origin of Xi-Qu ( traditional Chinese opera) are unilateral. Like the words “Xi” (play) and “Ju” (theater), the word “Xi-Ju” (drama) has two meanings, “to act” and “to play”. However, many researchers have paid attention only to the former and ignored the latter while tracing its origin. This is in fact a deduction of the idea that art originated from singing and dancing. That is why the traditional Chinese poetics of art, the cultural context of patriotism and practicability urged the “Xi-Qu” researchers in the 20th century to prefer the former to the latter. The meaning of “play” which “Xi-Qu” lacks is contained in “Xi-Ju”. Because of its compatibility, the word “Xi-Ju” embodies the spirit of culture and of traditional Chinese drama.

Abstract:Drama is a form of storytelling inspired by human creativity, proceeding with a predefined storyline, carrying emotions and thoughts. This paper introduces \emph{LLM-based interactive drama}, which endows traditional drama with an unprecedented immersion, where a person is allowed to walk into it and interact with the characters and scenes. We define this new artistic genre by 6 essential elements-plot, character, thought, diction, spectacle and interaction-and study the entire pipeline to forge a backbone \emph{drama LLM} to drive the playing process, which is challenged by limited drama resources, uncontrollable narrative development, and complicated instruction following. We propose \emph{Narrative Chain} to offer finer control over the narrative progression during interaction with players; \emph{Auto-Drama} to synthesize drama scripts given arbitrary stories; \emph{Sparse Instruction Tuning} to allow the model to follow sophisticated instructions. We manually craft 3 scripts, \emph{Detective Conan}, \emph{Harry Potter}, \emph{Romeo and Juliet}, and design a 5-dimension principle to evaluate the drama LLM comprehensively.

By bringing Drama in Education to Ethics and Rule of Law classes for primary and secondary school students, integrate the two. And through the practice of a combination of dots and lines to promote educational theater, receive a good response. The significance of Drama in Education is to energize the rigid classroom, to make it fun, to stimulate the potential of the classroom, and to improve the efficiency of the classroom for the students. Drama in Education breaks the traditional classroom model and makes the classroom content more colorful. However, the development of Drama in Education continues to progress slowly and steadily against all odds. Advancing Drama in Education on the Road to Transforming the Ethics and Rule of Law Classes, teachers in primary and secondary schools, as well as those responsible for leading relevant departments, have a long way to go. It is indisputable that Drama in Education plays an integral role in the Ethics and Rule of Law classroom for elementary and middle school students. Abstract:<p class="a-plus-plus">Drama-in-Education workshops (DiE) emphasize on balancing between teacher's delicate structuring and participants' spontaneous exploration and creation in dramatic activities and thus can be a powerful liminoid space to scaffold and facilitate young people's development. Still, more researches are needed to dig into and understand such a dynamic and complex process happening in the workshop. In this article, we presented the theoretical background of conceptualizing drama as a hybrid cultural-aesthetic form to identify its potential in educational guidance. The perspective of developmental cultural psychology was introduced to frame DiE practice as a catalytic process working on releasing and transforming participants' developmental forces. The hierarchical levels of semiotic mediation in cultural psychology can help to capture participants' affective and cognitive generalizations in semiotic forms and to perform a micro-genetic analysis of the flow of participants' subjective experiences. We also provided a step-by-step analysis of a DiE practice working with young Chinese immigrants to illuminate our theoretical proposal.</p>

Abstract:The subject of the study is the possibility of applying M.M. Bakhtin's theory of polyphony to the analysis of dramatic works. Bakhtin’s concept of "polyphony" is associated with the identification of a new novel genre – the polyphonic novel and a new type of artistic thinking, which is different from the monological type. Bakhtin justified the new phenomenon on the example of the work of F.M. Dostoevsky, and does it have a wider distribution? According to many Chinese researchers, Bakhtin's theory of polyphony can be applied not only to Dostoevsky, but also to the dramaturgy of W. Shakespeare, A.P. Chekhov, the Chinese playwright Gao Xingjian, etc. They try to analyze the polyphonic features of various dramatic works, relying on Bakhtin's theory of polyphony. However, some researchers do not accurately interpret Bakhtin's concept. They discover elements of polyphony in some dramatic work and thus consider it quite polyphonic. In this article, the author examines Bakhtin's statements about the monologue of drama and reveals the inaccuracy of Chinese researchers’ interpretations of Bakhtin’s concept of polyphony. Based on the conducted research, we came to the conclusion that M.M. Bakhtin's theory of polyphony does not go beyond the limits of the novel genre, and it cannot be applied to the analysis of dramatic works. The scientific novelty of the work lies in the fact that this article examines various interpretations of Bakhtin’s concepts and terms and reveals the incorrect use of the Bakhtin’s theory of polyphony in modern Chinese literary studies. The author's special contribution to the research of the topic is to determine the scope of the application of M.M. Bakhtin's theory of polyphony and to identify the state of reception of Bakhtin's theory of polyphony in China.

Abstract:Drama refers to a comprehensive art that realizes the purpose of narrative through language, movement, dance, music, puppets, and other forms. From the pre-Qin period⟶the Han and Wei periods⟶the Tang, Song, and Jin periods⟶the Yuan Dynasty⟶the late Yuan Ming and Qing periods⟶modern times, the art of opera has been welcomed and recognized by a vast audience since its birth, but it is difficult to inherit the art of Chinese opera. The fundamental reason is that there is no good platform for performance. It should be said that since the beginning of the performing arts, there has also been academic thinking on the practice of this artistic creation, so in the academic field of drama, there is actually drama performance science. Due to the changes of the times, Chinese drama art cannot keep up with the pace of the Internet. Therefore, this article proposed a technical research based on the interactive drama performance production and performance platform. This article mainly talks about face recognition technology and its algorithm, and applies it to theatrical performances and productions. In the following experiments, this technology is also used to create a network platform, and its user experience evaluation effect is good. The theatrical performances and productions of young people were also scored, and the final experimental results showed that: at the minimum required level, which is at least three (or more) dramatic materials in the class, scores are high at both levels. Among them, 94.4% of the classes in the first-level kindergarten and 86.1% of the classes in the second-level kindergarten meet this standard. Most of the two levels are qualified, that is to say, in the performance area, at least three people can perform at the same time, which is enough to show that theatrical performance has been passed down.

Abstract:Abstract: Theatre students need an expansive view of art and storytelling in order to fully engage the diversity of the field of theatre and performance. We argue this can be accomplished by moving past a focus on the "play from the inside" of most script analysis courses toward a dramaturgical analysis. Dramaturgy offers a broader approach that fosters more complex critical and creative thinking skills, thus providing a stronger foundation for analytical ability. How can dramaturgy broaden the artistic discipline's approach to script analysis? What do we gain from applying a dramaturgical sensibility to script analysis? We suggest the employment of five themes to utilize in dramaturgical analysis: context, audience, creation, shape, and conceptual frameworks.

Abstract:Drama in Education (DIE) is believed to play a specially positive role in helping students in primary and secondary schools to form language awareness and develop language abilities. It has gradually formed its own script structure characteristics in the practice of local English teaching. By analyzing the scripts of 31 dramas staged by three local schools in the English culture and drama festivals, this paper summarizes the implementation characteristics of DIE from the aspects of story source, script source, students’ involvement, and theme distribution. In addition, this paper also analyzes the script structure favored by local teachers and students from four stages: the beginning, the development, the climax and the ending, which will greatly help solve the problem of drama creation for primary and secondary school teachers and students, and improve their enthusiasm to implement DIE in English classroom.

Abstract:There is a crisis in drama studies that is reflected in the ways different disciplines understand dramatic texts and performance. Literary studies, absorbed with the functioning of language, often betrays a desire to locate the meanings of the stage in the dramatic text. Performance studies has developed a vivid account of nondramatic performance, which appears to depart from textual authority. Both disciplines, however, view drama as a species of performance driven by its text; as a result, drama appears as an unduly authorized mode of performance. Here, I read a range of critics (Andrew Parker. Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick, and Judith Butler on J. L. Austin; Dwight Conquergood on ethnography; Joseph Roach on surrogation) to suggest ways of rethinking the relations of authority that inform texts and performances. I conclude with a glance at the representation of the text in Baz Luhrmann's recent film William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet.

Abstract:In the recent ten years,intercultural performance studies have evoked worldwide repercussions among international scholars on dramatic theories.Scholars,such as Patrice Pavis,Erika Fischer-Lichte and Julie Holledg,compiled and published a series of academic works,discussing various problems in intercultural performance.In The Intercultural Performance Reader,Patrice Pavis discussed many cases in intercultural performance,including Peter Brook's adaptation of Indian epics and Japanese director Suzuki's adaptation of Shakepearean and Greek tragedies in the form of traditional Japanese drama.Fischer-Lichte and Holledg in their intercultural studies also mentioned Chinese adaptations;however,because they are not familiar with the cultural and social context of the performances as well as the artistic characteristics of Chinese spoken and traditional opera,their viewpoints are often times not so convincing and the discussions rather limited.Concerning the Western Centrism in intercultural performance studies,Indian scholar Rustom Bharucha put forward sharp criticism,which has aroused academic debates.In China,there is a long history of Western adaptation and performances are carried out in a variety of theatrical forms.In addition,new changes have taken place recently.But there has not been much research on the adaptations,particularly from theoretical perspectives.Nanjing University has had a long tradition of research on spoken drama,traditional opera,foreign and performances.When Prof.PENG Jing-xi,a famous scholar of Taiwan University,visited the Institute for Advanced Studies in Humanities Social Sciences of Nanjing University,a number of scholars on Chinese and foreign were invited to participant in a professor saloon on drama adaptation.The following is edited from their speeches for publication,with the hope that the topic will arouse more attention.

Abstract:This overview article initially focuses on early connections between dramatic art, teaching, learning, and living, followed by a brief account of how Great Britain took on a pioneering role with regard to the establishment of drama as a school subject, method and educational sub-discipline. It then focuses on how drama pedagogy in foreign language teaching and learning has developed as a specific field of research and practice since the 1970s, acknowledging the important contributions to the field made by scholars and practitioners from outside Great Britain. An overview of current practice in the field is given by presenting different (small-scale and large-scale) forms of staging language, literature and culture. The article concludes by proposing a model for a „Performative Fremdsprachendidaktik“ (Performative Foreign Languages Didactics) and by arguing that in the future “performative” be used as an umbrella term to describe forms of foreign language teaching and learning that derive from the performing arts.

Abstract:The present study deals with the novel dramatization in the context of the synthesis of the art in the literature of the 20th century. The changes in the literary text caused by introducing a new pictorial and expressive technique are given. The use of pictorial and theatrical ekphrasis in Maugham’s novels was analysed. W. S. Maugham’s novels are considered through the prism of his theatrical experience. The paper attempts to interpret his poetics of dramatization as a way out of the epic and the creation of a qualitatively new multi-plate and multifaceted phenomenon. At the narrative level, there is an interruption in the integrity of the story. Vertical layers add a horizontal plan for the development of the plot, and the subjective structure has changed at the level of inclusion of several storytellers. The study revealed that the connotations to paintings and plays increase the effect of descriptiveness and enrich expressive, emotional, and sensual perception. The method of “points of view” is used to overcome the plane of description and move to the sphere of the display. The clash of diverse “points of view” and their filtering by the dominant “point of view” of the narrator increases the dramatization influence.
