Abstract:Drama is a sort of comprehensive art. Most of the dramas all over the world originated from ancient songs and dances in fiestas. From different points of view, theoreticians have posed varied ideas on the nature of drama. Today, we should observe this question with a sight of motion and improvement. There are noticeable differences between Chinese drama and Western drama.

Abstract:In the development of traditional Chinese drama, the word “drama' has its original meaning and its semantic changes. Because the relevant researchers in the 20th century ignored this fact, their textual researches about the origin of Xi-Qu ( traditional Chinese opera) are unilateral. Like the words “Xi” (play) and “Ju” (theater), the word “Xi-Ju” (drama) has two meanings, “to act” and “to play”. However, many researchers have paid attention only to the former and ignored the latter while tracing its origin. This is in fact a deduction of the idea that art originated from singing and dancing. That is why the traditional Chinese poetics of art, the cultural context of patriotism and practicability urged the “Xi-Qu” researchers in the 20th century to prefer the former to the latter. The meaning of “play” which “Xi-Qu” lacks is contained in “Xi-Ju”. Because of its compatibility, the word “Xi-Ju” embodies the spirit of culture and of traditional Chinese drama.

Abstract:Although world literature has been one of the heatedly discussed cutting edge theoretical topics in current international academia, no one has so far dealt with the issue of world drama from a theoretical and comparative perspective. Along with the deepening of the discussion on world literature, different genres of literature should also be paid attention to. Of all the literary genres, drama is more closely related to art and vividly represented and easily disseminated across the border of languages and countries as it, apart from dialogues between characters, appeals to images and music for voices, which is especially characterized by various local Chinese operas. No doubt, modern Chinese drama has formed its unique tradition under the Western influence although it has more or less inherited its legacy in various local operas. Actually, the phenomenon of world drama does exist, but it seems not to have been recognized although drama is easier to move toward the world than novel and poetry as it largely depends on performance and music. In the present article, the author, inspired by David Damrosch and Franco Moretti, tries to put forward his constructed concept of world drama before re-examining modern Chinese drama in this broad context: (1) world drama is the canonical body of the excellent quality national dramas; (2) world drama is the dramatic work that gains in adaptation and creative production and performance; (3) world drama is the dramatic work which could be staged, appreciated and critically discussed by people in the world beyond the limit of space and time.

Abstract:Abstract: Chinese drama has its origins in primitive forms of singing and dancing, and has since evolved into a comprehensive art form with a rich history. It is considered one of the three ancient drama cultures, alongside ancient Greek drama and Indian Sanskrit drama. Different nations have different cultures with unique national characteristics, while personalized philosophical concepts play a leading role in the formation of culture. Science, literature, art, education, etc., that belong to the cultural category, are all guided and influenced by philosophical thoughts, and drama art is the same. This article discusses and analyzes the philosophical thoughts behind traditional Chinese drama culture.

Abstract:Drama is ideology-loaded;however,the form of art has its relative stability and independence,as well as transcendence over time and nationality.The form of art should not be defined simply as advanced or backward with the idea of Darwinism.At present,cultural globalization is equal to neither integration nor westernization.In the development process of modern culture,the local culture of various countries and nationalities should not be weakened;instead,it should be kept and upheld.Chinese Xiqu opera,including classical,traditional and modern plays,is the crystallization of culture and art.The performance art theory manifested in Chinese Xiqu opera is the outstanding representative of not only drama,but also world classical drama,and needs to be systematically summarized and profoundly explored.Therefore,our standing point can be eastern classical drama.

Abstract:The debate on the "concept of drama" in the New Period was carried out in the context of dramatic crisis.In the debate,the direction of the development of Chinese spoken drama was discussed,which helped widen the realism in the New Period,the trial of experimental drama and the emergence of a new dramatic performing system.On the other hand,the debate concluded that virtuality is the nature of drama,which deviates from the human nature of drama,resulted in the over-reforming of dramatic form,and inevitably left serious problems for the future development of drama.

Abstract:The concept of “Chinese drama” has profound meaning, which makes the national drama acquire new connotation in the new century, and also shows the breakthrough of the historical view of drama culture with the unique characteristic of the integrated exploration of Chinese drama. Although it was named hastily and with some expediency, it showed that in the artistic chaos brought by the market in the 1990s, the theater people had the first premonition of the cultural changes brought by the surging trend of globalization, and they resolutely began to break out of the cocoon, try regional and cross-border union and association, and gradually establish a real perspective of national drama. With the water-like fluidity, “Chinese drama” breaks through the frozen soil of history, prying open the boundaries of the sheltered areas of various aspects of Chinese cultures, pursuing the fresh flow and sharing of dramatic ideas, aesthetics, arts and methods. What it constructs is a new “cultural drama” that is dynamically selected and may overlap with “world drama”. The three most valuable and distinctive features are: 1. The harmonic form of multi-locality and multi-tone convergence; 2. World expression of Chinese stories; 3. Call for and generate a strong sense of community.

Abstract:The circulation of world drama beyond its origin is to a large extent dependent on its intercultural performances, which are often done in unexpected forms for an indefinite body of audiences. In contemporary China, the adaptations and performances of Western plays have played an important role within and without theatre. In those intercultural adaptations, Western plays are translated, appropriated and staged by interweaving Chinese and Western performing cultures. So far, the adaptations of Western plays have brought about transformative effects on both the Western playwrights and Chinese theatre. Compared with the early ones, contemporary adaptations of Western plays have acquired some new characteristics. Firstly, there have appeared some international casts using different languages, as the audiences in the theatre are becoming bilingual or multilingual. Secondly, more and more Western plays are adapted into traditional Chinese theatrical forms, such as jingju, kunju, yueju, chuanju, quju, etc. One of the most obvious differences between traditional Chinese opera and spoken drama is that singing plays the leading role in the former. In some local opera performances, dialects are naturally used. Thirdly, certain individual plays have been frequently adapted and staged in different localities. The adaptations are often closely related to the political and cultural specificities in the local contexts. Despite the complexities in its global circulation and production, world drama gains in the intercultural process of adaptation, staging and viewing.

Abstract:What makes a drama and how can we build a sense of drama with a modern Western perspective? Before 1930,Chinese academics and the performing arts circles had failed to answer these questions.When translating the play Swift,Cao Yu changed this drama's composition,action,character,dialogue,sentiment and other aspects.He displayed an extremely keen sense of uniqueness.Thanks to various reasons,Cao Yu formed his sense of drama and his drama awareness had already been very mature when he wrote The Thunderstorm.Even today,no dramatist in China can match him.What a dramatist writes is not so important as the sense which leads to the writing.Modern drama has been in China for 100 years,but today the sense of drama is still an important lesson we should take.

Abstract:Wang Ji-de during the Ming Dynasty and Li Yu during the early days of Qing Dynasty carried forward the fine tradition of Chinese dramatic theory since Tang xianzu and Shen Jing. They summed up past experience of art conscientiowsly. Aiming at problems of dramatic practice af that time, they also put forward some theoretical schemes involving a wide-ranging problems in music, libretto, spoken part, structure and social function of drama. Abstract:Based on the study of the problem of Chinese theater and musical art of the country, the original culture of the people is revealed. The problem of studying the worldview system of ancient China as the basis for the emergence of musical tradition has interested many scholars, because it influenced the cultural life of the East. Philosophical views influenced both theatrical life and the musical art of the country. Thus, China's cultural traditions were based on ancient Chinese philosophies: Confucianism, Taoism, and Buddhism. Special attention was paid to education, especially aesthetics, in China. Music education played an important role in Chinese culture. Confucius emphasizes the comprehensive development of man, while emphasizing the morality of the individual. Thus, the theatrical art of China is distinguished by cultural unity and originality. Musical load played a big role. The Chinese worldview is based on the vision of nature as a living organism. The first sprouts of musical and theatrical art appear. XII-XIII centuries marked the birth of Chinese opera. Chinese theater was fully popular. The musical side of classical theater is characterized by an inseparable unity of sound, word and dance. The range of images, moods, techniques of acting is characterized by a certain type of melody, rhythm, composition of the orchestra. The subject of ancient theater and musical art of China is interesting and not fully studied, which necessitates further development in the study of this issue. Performing skills were subject to a system of vocal skills. Yes, important were: language, temperament, the nature of singing. The storyline has always been built on plots in which good always wins over evil. Thus, an optimistic mood in everything. Thus, Chinese opera singing synthesized the traditions of folk song and classical opera with European bel canto. It is also important to possess not only the voice but also the body. There were special schools that taught the culture of jumping, running, spinning wheels, and so on. Such theater groups have been involved in educating the skills needed for theater since childhood.
